  • Cool. I wonder how it runs

1080p only - cheap price but surely the Voda tv is a better option for only $20 more?

    • +2

      Yes…..all day every day

      • I’ve heard bad things about the VTV with adjusting the frame rate while watching sports, any idea if that’s still the case?

        • I've been using one for 2 years almost… doesn't ring a bell.

        • +1

Trivial concerns compared with the limitations of devices like this Xiaomi Mi stick (1080p version).

          • @dexx: Not at all trivial for me, which is why I asked but I probably shouldn't have worded it as though it's bad, most people won't have any issues, the concern is huge for me given the specific reason I'm looking at VTV/Foxtel Now Box/Mi Box S or alternatively the Mi Stick now is purely for something that adjusts the framerate when watching sports either via Kayo or the Foxtel Go addon in Kodi as currently I can't get it looking decent on my TV.

            • -1

@MBix: It doesn’t adjust the frame rate to suit the source no, but I have the VTV with Kayo hooked up to my Samsung F8500 and can’t say it being outputted at 60Hz from a 50Hz source has really been noticeable at all.

And I’m someone who can easy tell when my other Kodi box is playing up and not adjusting the output when playing 24Hz content at 60Hz. So I would have assumed it would be a bigger issue and more noticeable with Kayo, but maybe the F8500 just handles it better.

              • @Nousernamehere: Thanks for the response mate, just the type of comment I was looking for. Might just give it a punt and hope it works despite us having differing TV's!

                • +1

@MBix: I've not noticed any major issues like that with a Voda box on either an old Panasonic Plasma or 2016 model Hisense 4K TV.

    • +1

This is alot more compact though. For a main tv definitely pick the voda but if you want to hang it on the bedroom wall this might be better as 1080 is enough and it is more minimalistic.

      • +3

Better to just wait a bit for the new google dongle.

        • That'll be double the price though

Anyone used Android TV with Freeview/TV Channels in someform? Seems like a good alternative to a TV Box if they have suitable internet.

    • Gotta get one with a TV Tuner (Vodafone TV has this but has it's own issues with no NTFS usb support).

That said I have one and freeview channels work fine, albeit I rarely watch them.

      • +2

Or you could just get Tivimate or Kodi and setup the IPTV free to air channels. Granted, you're up the creek if the internet goes down. :)

        • +2

There's always the option to run tvheadend on a pi and then anything in your house running Kodi can watch live TV.

Between that and the Android TV catchup apps - it's a pretty good setup.

          • @senorclean: The main advantage of that is still using terrestrial as a source, is that right? I think with the evolution of Tivimate on AndroidTV over the past year or so it's really gone ahead of these other solutions. It's just stupidly easy, and great interface, to add the free to air m3u8 and bam you're watching tv.

            • +1

@Xizor: Yes, tvheadend is all local using my own rooftop antenna. I'll have to check out Tivimate as an alternative, but I've been really happy with tvheadend over the years.

              • +1

@senorclean: As the saying goes… if it ain't broke. :)

I read about it earlier, not sure how reliable it is. 1GB ram is the 1080p version. 2GB ram is the 4k version.

    • Amlogic S805Y SoC for 1080p. and Amlogic S905X3 SoC for 4k.

Hi guys, be careful here. This product is not a new one. The tv stick comes with two versions: the first version which released quite a while is 1080p with 1gb ram.

The second version is the latest which just released few days ago with 4k and 2gb ram is here:

Do you know if it can install apk easily?

    • This is good to know!

    • darn, tricked!

  • I have Fire Stick already, does this do anything the Fire Stock doesn't?

Reports your data to Xi Jinping

  • What's the difference between this and a Chromecast?

    • +1

Different operating system. No remote control included with the product, your phone or tablet is the remote. The current Chromecast (gen 1,2,3) do not run Android TV, it runs a very cut down version of Chrome.

Sabrina which is google's upcoming Chromecast will run Android TV (rumoured RRP $80 USD / 100 AUD), the TV Stick it is more similar to that.

    • +2

either USA has all your data or China has all your data. either or

      • +3

        or both anyway.

  • Any info if the remote is the Bluetooth one or normal IR ?
    Thanks.
