    • I was wondering 2 for the NAS, or keep NAS and backup to a single 12TB once in a while.

    • Currently rocking 2x10tb + 4x8tb + 6tb + 4tb = 62TB in a rosewill server case. Hanging out for the 14tb to go cheap.

      • Amazon used to have the 14TB WD Ultrastars for around the $600 mark (Great drive) haven't seen it that price since Covid hit. WD Elements or Mybook 14TB is somewhere around the $450 mark usually. About $400 on special.

    • unraid storage = 96TB @ 68% full
pre-cleared spares and to ready to expand = 66TB mix of 10TB &8Tb
      have on order 3x12TB 1X14TB

    • I getting rid of my older HDDs (less than 2TB capacity); fewer to worry about.

  • +1

Can I pull this apart and put it in my pc for steam storage?

  • For useage as a archive drive, no shucking, whats the speed like on the drives in these compared to seagate 10tb drive(which are barracuda pro)?

    • +1

These are in the low 200's for sequential. I can't remember the reviews but the Barracudas being 7200rpm drives should be faster.

    • Edit duplicate comment. Oops.

  • +1

Now I'm debating whether I should order 1 or 2 … this morning I didn't even want another hard drive

  • Are there any Synology pro's in here?

If I were to build an array in my aging DS1813+ or DS1511+ NAS, would that array be instantly recognised when the drives are moved to a newer Synology (I'm holding out for the DS1621+ which is surely coming in Q4)

I'm fairly sure the answer is yes but I'd love to hear from someone who's tried it.

  • aside from server purposes and storing videos/photos/games, what else are people using these drives for?

    • +1

      Linux ISOs!

      • do Linux iso's take up that much space? or are you like installing it and booting it from the hard drive?

        • +8

It’s a joke. Linux ISOs is an euphemism for porn.

    • +2

      Paperweight/doorstop ;)

      (pun intended)

  • If you buy the same drive locally, say from Officeworks or JB Hifi will it be the same internal drive as well (WD120EMAZ)?

  • +2

Suncorp rewards for an extra 3% off plus 6% cashback… Can't say no to 12TB for sub $300.
Now I can finally raid my other 12TB drive.

    • I gave up on doing the Suncorp discount gift cards thing when I bought $500 of cards once and item went out of stock before the cards processed.

I suppose the lesson is 'prepurchase gift cards', but I don't love the idea of having a large amount of cash held up in gift cards - I suppose this is the trials and tribulations of an OzBargainer.

      • Really? Processing is almost immediately for me. I check out, and it's available to use as soon as I get back to my cards. Just copy and paste the code.
I still get a bit stressed it will go out of stock in the 1 minute or so I takes to check out though…

        • Usually it's pretty good indeed, but as you can imagine once it goes wrong for you it's annoying.

I did end up using the cards in the end, but it just stings.

    • Cashback the same for SB and CR @ 6% mate?

      • Yep. I used shopback, but I think they're the same for electronics.

        • +1

          Thanks, just pulled the trigger.

Turns out SB is 6% and CR appears to be 5%

          • @cristobaljames: But CR has the $3 bonus which actually might be worth more since the GST-exclusive price is $281.90.

    • What‘s ur monthly limit for amazon cards? I bought $500 3 days ago now and I kept getting "monthly limit reached" despite say on the website "daily limt is $500"

      • It's a typo in the suncorp benefits app

      • No idea. Can't say I've needed to go over $500 in a month.

        • Want to buy two

  • +1

Tempted to grab one. Thing is, by the time I need more storage space they will probably be cheaper again.

    • +3

I don't think you'll see cheaper anytime soon, maybe not again in 2020 to be honest.

These have taken forever to drop back under $330 and often barely coming under $350. I know that doesn't make sense with technology, but HDD prices really aren't dropping much.

  • +1

Just bought the seagate 10tb and already shipped :( Will I get free return and full refund for it?

    • +1

If you can make the seagate an internal drive and this a backup

  • Thanks op ordered one :)

    • +1

Yeah, Amazon knows that Aussies have limited competition lol

    • I'm assuming buying directly from amazon US will never come back ..

  • +1

What is the best work-around for buying twice, ie: 4 drives?
I'm a prime member so to buy the 3rd and 4th drives I'd be forced to pay shipping with a new account?

EDIT: Alternatively, I just buy 2 now and 2 from a future deal so I'm guaranteed drives from 2 different batches. That's probably the smart thing to do. I had always been planning a DS1618+ / DS1621+ 6 bay NAS but it's just occurred to me I could get by with a cheap DS418+ for under half the price and sell my old NAS boxes & HDD's making my NAS + 4 x 12TB drives almost entirely FREE :)

    • +1

Register a new account with amazon prime - buy the products then cancel the prime.

      • +2

        Now that's why I use OzBargain :)

Actually, what happens if I just go back and order 2 more which it seems to let me do? Will they see it and cancel it?

    • +1

      DS418+ isn't a thing in Australia.

      DS918+ is cheaper than DS420+ and DS920+.

      • I'm having a shocker today. I meant DS918+ (I was too busy thinking 4 bays and typo'd)

I always thought I needed 6 bays (DS1618+ or DS1621+ when it arrives) to cover me from the 13 bays I currently have but those are all 4 and 2TB drives. A 4 bay with a bit of grunt like the DS418+ and 4x12TB in RAID5 should cover me just fine. And yes I know the DS420+ has a much better CPU but overall doesn't offer enough for the big price bump IMHO.

The DS918+ can go under $650 so I'll pull the trigger on the next sale on those. There is always the DX517 or simply a 2nd NAS option down the track if my needs outgrow this.

        • +1

The DS918+ is no longer being distributed in Australia and is no longer restocked. For example Computer Alliance has applied the 'ONLY WHILE STOCKS LAST' label and I also got confirmation from MegaBuy that they will not be receiving new stock.

So if you want a DS918+, you should probably buy one now (eBay: computer alliance with PAYN4 coupon is cheapest, $680 shipped) or wait for a sale on DS920+ :P

          • @dualcore: Wow thanks, that I didn't know…

$680 might not be so bad in that case.

  • +3

Thankyou OP! I've been putting off buying drives all year, this is enough for me to pull the trigger.

  • Does this come with an AU plug?

I literally bought one of the Seagate 10TB yesterday, is it with cancelling my order and getting the WD instead?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551231

    • -2

      In a word, YES

      • +4

        Pretty sure it doesn't….

Register it with WD and they'll send one if you ask nicely though.

        • +1

Oh whoops sorry I didn't even see his first question - I was answering YES to cancelling the 10TB Seagate purchase. It doesn't let me downvote my own comment :)

Sorry for the confusion zekedot. I'd say it probably does NOT include an Australian plug.

        • +1

That's what I've just done and worked like a charm, an AU plug is being sent out at no charge.

          Thanks for the heads up!

    • I ordered one last night too. Tried to cancel. Told me it was already in advanced shipping stages and will arrive on the 17th LOL. Got to hand it to amazon for speedy delivery

    • +2

For what it's worth, the two drives are quite different - one is a 7200rpm desktop drive, the other is a slower but more NAS-suited 5400rpm drive.

I've decided to put the Seagate in my desktop and take out my 8TB WD 5400rpm drive (shucked from a similar enclosure) for my NAS, and add in another 12TB from this deal too :)

Oh, and the WD 12TB drive comes with a US plug (I ordered two from Amazon US via AU in the past month). I believe you can ask WD for an Aussie one if you desire though.

      • Yes I've heard people have successfully got AU plugs after requesting it. Shucking all the way here so I don't care.

        • Do you have a spare AU plug already?

      • What 2 drives are you referring to?

  • I grabbed that 10TB from the UK deal which just arrived and picked up one of these now as well… Considering buying another, but I've also got an eye on a Synology purchase… and it's too cold to sleep on the couch for long…

    • +3

order a blanket as well from the home department and get 8% shopback off that as well.

  • +1

What do ozbargainers do with all this storage?

    • +3

Hiding off-site backups all along my street.

    • Media. We like to hoard.

    • Thats what I wanted to know, but was too scared too ask. I have around 7/8 500g to 1tb portables laying around mostly unused from back in the day, before streaming, when i was a naughty pirate, but don't know what you would use drives this big for these days.

      • +1

There is plenty of stuff still not easily found on streaming (the menu's and rating systems seem to get worse all the time)… and which provider its with changes or it just vanishing altogether.

Always know where it is on your NAS.

      • +2

to run your own plex or emby server

        • +1

Ok cool the old NAS, plex or emby.
Gen X here. ( Thanks though)

    • retro console ISO images.

  • -5

    Thanks OP! purchased 16

  • +7

Got one to back up my growing collection of romantic movies. 😉

  • +1

if i make another purchase of 2 will it go through or be rejected?

    • I asked this too, no confirmation yet. If you google it the answer I find it it's safe to do, but something tells me they will cancel it.

The other option is to make a 2nd dummy Prime account, order and cancel Prime.

    • make another account man

      • how do you get around the phone part, (The phone number you've entered already exists with another account.) its only me

        • oh just dont enter a mobile, i managed to make 6 accounts no issue

          • +1

@harryozz: ok so i was trying the cheat [email protected] and it didn't like that so i had to create a new gmail

            • +1

@fr05ty: Yeah man i bought them for my business so i got all the employees to make accounts with their company email so every account pretty much unique

  • Will there be any issues if you place another order for 2 drives?

    • I believe it is a one week limit for your account, but you can open another account to buy more.

  • Didn't need one as I still have over 10tb to fill, but ordered anyways. Thanks OP.

  • +1

14TB just dropped again to $417.

  • Thanks OP, have been meaning to get a big external drive. Good timing!

  • Does anyone know if Amazon would process this transaction in Australia or overseas, given that it's from the Amazon Global store.
Wondering if I'll be charged international transaction fee on my CC or if I should just use my Debit card.

    • charge in all aussie dollars, it just comes from the USofA with a US plug

      • I get that it's charged in Aussie dollars, but it depends on where the merchant is located.
I probably won't risk it with the credit card, but just wondering if anyone has any experience with it.

        • +2

          There are zero FX fees.

        • The merchant is Amazon.com.au located in Australia.
Don't order online with your debit card ! It's significantly more difficult to fix when your card details get skimmed by a hacked site.

          • @Nom: How do I pay for amazon.com.au then?
