            • @yfxsmike: Use a credit card - it's significantly less annoying for you when the card details leak.

            • @yfxsmike: Pretty sure it's processed by Amazon AU but if you're really worried, you could always use gift cards?

  • Ordered 2 and my wife order 2. Will go in my synology NAS

    • +4

Wife has no idea doesn't she? :)

      • Haha

    • I had to explain to my wife today why I ordered 4 hard drives… went better than anticipated. I may have referenced your story to change the focus though!

Hope you have better experience with Amazon packaging than I did: https://forums.overclockers.com.au/posts/18598830/

    Stil not refunded.

    • Wow that's nasty.

I've always had amazing packaging from Amazon but something sure went wrong with that one.

    • That's incredibly bad, reminds me of Ace Ventura

haha my 12TB came delivered the exact same was even left out the front door, was like wtf when i went outside and saw it still there luckily.

    • I've had 2 issues and both were resolved instantly via chat. Once was an instant refund ($40), the other was a return (they covered) then got refund so could then buy again ($120).

  • Cheers @doweyy, I've been waiting for this price point.
Had a look back through old posts to see the procedure for requesting an AU cable but didn't see anything specific. Register the drive once it arrives and request then or ??

  • I finally got one. Thanks

  • +5

For the people wanting to purchase multiple times ie 4 drives, just be mindful that you are most likely going to receive 4 drives all from the same manufacturing batch.

There is always a risk of a dodgy batch and it’s recommended you spread out your purchases to avoid getting a dud batch and all your drives dying at once. Food for thought.

    • +1

While there is merit in this thinking, the risks of a 'dodgy batch' were something that came out of a particular issue many years ago (maybe even 2 decades ago now).

It's theoretically possible but practically not the case when you look at the stats out of places like google and backblaze and have conversations with the engineering folk there. Your chances of receiving drives from the same batch AND any individual 'batch' having issues that have made it through QA are practically non existent.

There was a specific issue in Australia of a 'bad batch of hard drives' that I believe was traced back to an issue with a shipping container experiencing more Gs than it really should have, due to an accident in handling.. and this has led to now what seems to be a popular urban myth around trying to avoid 'batches'.

      • -1

The chances are extremely low yes. However if youve got valuable data…….

      • I was worried about this too but I bit the bullet and just bought all 4 drives I needed now at this low price. I'm not confident we'll see this price again anytime soon.

I think at the end of the day the odds must be very low and we're all using backups, right? :)

    • +1

For what it's worth I bought two 12TB WD drives within 24 hours of each other last month when they were circa $355 delivered and got two different drives (EMAZ and EMFZ).

  • okay not sure why i bought another hdd

  • Sounds like this shucks well. Will this fit inside an enclosure like TerraMaster D2-310 without the pin-hack ?

    • +1

the pin hack is pretty easy you can even use some duct tape.

      • Ok thanks. Grabbed this https://www.centrecom.com.au/terramaster-d2-310-2-bay-usb-31… and was looking for couple of high capacity drives. The plan is to connect the enclosure to a Synology DS918+ ( which is fully populated with 4 X 3 TB WD Reds as RAID5 ) as an external JBOD.

        • +1

These drives are already in external USB cases - why not just connect the drives directly to the Synology ?

          • +1

@Nom: Well, you can. But is that not just the same as plugging into your PC or modem/router? If you have spare slots you'd more likely want the drive to be part of your NAS storage pool and thus increase your RAID/SHR pool that has redundancy.

          • +1

@Nom: It makes them look really messy when you have a few external drives connected to your nas. I have an old 4 bays probox connected to my nas as backups of the data on my nas.

        • I want to add, the 3v pin only needs to be blocked in a PC, NAS enclosures generally dont make use of the pin so its not impacted.

  • Very good Deal!!!!

  • This is the price we've all been waiting for! Ordered one myself finally.
Hopefully AU plugs too as it's coming through the AUS store. Lowest price I've seen in ages.

    • +2

It’s not coming from the Aus store….

It’s going to come with a US plug

  • +1

How long until it appears in cashrewards? My last order for the Seagate 10TB got declined, maybe there was no cashback on 5 June?

Also does anyone have a direct link to request the AUS plug? Is it just contacting them via the US website ? On my phone atm and couldn’t see an Australian contact email

    • Think Electronics CB returned in late June/early July. Was 0% before.

      • Thanks, good thing I didn't submit an enquiry!

  • Just checked the spec sheet, can anyone elaborate the difference? The workload for WD Black D10 12TB (Ultrastar DC HC520 7200RPM) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551980 is more than 2 times (2.5m hrs) than that of this WD120EMFZ posted earlier yesterday, does it mean it will have more than two times lifespan? 550TB/year vs 180TB/year seems like worth the extra, not to mention the higher speed (250MB/s vs 210MB/s SW).

    • Honestly, that Ultrastar DC HC520 you refer to is in a category above these. You're getting closer to Enterprise/datacentre spec with that drive so if you don't mind the price bump it is a superior choice and actually a bargain for what it is. It might have "WD" printed on it, but this is HGST design that WD acquired - in my opinion is superior to anything WD make organically.

That said, I actually prefer 5400rpm in my NAS cases and I'm comfortable with the increased odds of failure vs that drive. These WD Whites are still very good. Without trying to show any bias, I think these are better than the Seagate options.

  • Any thoughts on this vs the WD black for an extra $80ish? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551980

    • What are you going to be using your drive for?

If it’s storing media and files etc then get this. If you need to store and play games off it - get the other one. They other drive is quicker

    • See above. Definitely a superior drive, if you need that extra is up to you. For what it is, that's a bargain, it's not really comparable to this drive. But this drive is no lemon either. If throwing in a NAS, honestly these will be fine (most even prefer 5400rpm for this purpose)

  • Possible to buy one of these for a NAS and then just add another one later down the track or do you have to add drives of the same size?

    • depends on your NAS configuration - if you're using any type of redundancy on the NAS generally you need a minimum of two drives to be identical so they are copied across from each other.

  • Dang it, I need 14TB.

  • Thanks op. Helped my self to two.

  • Finally cancelled this and spend another $85 to get the 12tb game drive for higher specs

  • +4

For anyone wondering why this drive is better (for NAS) than any other drive, have a look at the Thermal Image in this link:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/gqcpjb/shucked…

yes, Air filled drives run much hotter than Helium filled drive. You can easily see how hot it is when compared to other drives. Lower operating temperature equates to a longer life with less bad blocks.
This is an enterprise grade drive ideally suited for 24x7 operation and not general PC use.

Helium drive user here: Three drives "WDC WD80EMAZ-00WJTA0" shucked from a WD Elements external drive running in a RAIDz configuration, 24x7 for more than a year with zero issues. Paid $219 for each, so this is a fantastic deal at $284 after shopback and SunCorp discounts. I've also used reward points to buy Amazon vouchers so got an even better deal.

  • Just bit the bullet, been looking for ages. Shopback said 7.5% for electronics, I hope that will track properly, but lets' see. Got backorder so I guess drive won't be coming anytime soon. Good deal, thanks Op.

    • 5% Electronics

      • Yes sorry, 5%

    • It's under "Computers -> Data Storage", so isn't that the PC catagory?

  • +1

    Not EXPIRED…

    Just ordered as Prime subscriber

    • Its on back-order (longer wait time)

  • i was still in bed an hour ago, looking at my phone with one blurry eye open, half awake but 3 quarters asleep, getting ready to doze off again into dreamworld. then i saw this deal. i was jolted into getting up, like being struck by lightning …WHERRE AM I WHAT DAY IS IT WHATTS THE TIMMEE?!?! …none of this mattered. the only thing that mattered was…. getting that ozbargain deal. getting that 12TB WDdrive. and i did ! thanks OP

    • Did you get it at $281.24 too?
It seems I can't cancel my other order anymore.

      • wow. you mean to say, that it appeared on the amazon au site, for "$281.24" for a little while just now? (i didn't see that an hour ago).

        • It's back to $416.90 now.
Yes, I placed an order for $281.24, but just saw I can't cancel the previous order anymore ($310.09).

          • @johnmelb: hehe wow :') well, i didn't get to see that price.

            • @Pilotwings77: I guess I was lucky,
I can't cancel the other order so now I have 2.
I tried to cancel via chat support: "I've checked and see that the order has already moved to advanced shipping stage, hence we're unable to cancel it."

  • you can backorder now for $281.24 + shipping

    • Back to $416.90

  • +1

They just discounted for $30 more lol, cancelled and put another order!

  • +1

They just discounted for $30 more lol, cancelled and put another order!

  • +1

They just discounted for $30 more lol, cancelled and ordered 2 instead!

    • +1

      Shows $416.90 for me.

      • It was $281.24 for around 15mins

      • Just went up again.

      • I see $416.90

  • geezus! it looks like i only just got this deal (at the OP's "$310.09" w free Prime shipping). because now it's gone. also, i did use Shopback. if it does anything, it will be a bonus.

    • It was 6% on ex-gst value yesterday, but looks like it's only 5% today (didn't check before I ordered again).
I will also 'mess up' my $3 challenge if I return one of them.
I should consider keeping the 2 and putting them in my NAS.

  • +1

Anyone regretting the price, even $310…check out the price of WD 12TB Red drive:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Red-Internal-Hard-Drive-12TB/dp/B0…

yes, that's a $220 saving for each shucked drive!

  • Looks like it’s finished but the 8TB is $231 so the price per tb is still great

    • Not the best. I paid for 8TB $219 in February last year, and that wasn't the best price at the time.

      • I bought a 500gb hard drive for $500 15 years ago. So that makes the cost per TB amazingly cheap, hell I can remember when Winchester hard drives had 1 whole Megabyte of Storage capacity and that was amazing too I seem to recall them being $1000 which is probably $10,000 in today’s money.😜

        • HDD prices should drop over time. In the case of 8TB WD Elements, it's gone up thus my comment

  • My HDDs shipped Fri 17.07 from USA and now in Sydney today, Mon 20.07. Pretty impressive especially during this time around!

    • When did you order? I ordered on the 15th (pretty soon after the deal came up) but mine still aren't even marked as shipped yet

      • Same here.

      • +1

According to my email, ordered on the 15th of July around 5pm.

        • Mine was 7pm… I guess that's a lifetime in Ozbargain deals lol

          • @aragornelessar: Mine was 7pm as well. Crazy to think a 2 hour window is the difference between waiting 5 days and maybe waiting 3 weeks.

            • @Fatboy74: I ordered a 14TB recently, and a second one the next day.
The first order was shipped DPD, and hasn't arrived yet.
The second later order, was shipped around five days later …. by DHL, and was at my door 5 days later.

              • @Nom: I don’t know who DPD is as I can’t find a site that the tracking ID would work with. It’s been sent last Monday and still haven’t arrived.

                • @kaal: Track your DPD delivery here - https://uktracking.asendia.com/tracking-dpd.php
                  The Amazon AWxxxx number works…

                  • @Nom: Thanks for that. It just cleared custom in Sydney.

                    • @kaal: Mine arrived in my city this morning - I expect it to be delivered this week.

                      • @Nom: jealous of y'all. my DPD just shows " Scanned to container " on Tuesday…

                        • +1

@jupy: Mine has now turned into an Australia Post delivery and they're bringing it on Monday.
Eventually you get a "Final Mile Tracking Number" which is an Australia Post code (though I think it can also be a Fastway code on occasion)…

  • Now $350.60 dispatched in 2-4 weeks. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07X4V2M3B

  • +1

Has anyone who received their drives (and did shucking) checked if they're indeed Helium drives as expected?

    • +1

Gonna be a while as need to do proper stress test prior shucking.

      • +1

This model is easy to put back and claim warranty

        • +1

Wouldnt say easy - especially for a first timer. But yes, very do-able.

  • Got my HDDs today, a day earlier than expected delivery. Top notch DHL service. Testing both of them now in HD Sentinel…

    • How long is a surface scan on the 12tb?

      • ETA 1225 mins, for both drives.

        • Is that a surface test or extended smart test? It took me 28 hrs to do one on a 4tb red

          • @kaal: I used HD sentinel’s extended self-test, I think their faq refers to surface test.

            https://www.hdsentinel.com/help/en/58_test.html

            • @cloudie9: I think mine took about 45 hrs, full write, then full read.

              • @gamerkonks: I'm running a write & read on 2 of mine now. I'm getting 32 hrs for each. I assume that's only for writing, and based on your numbers I can expect another 13 hours for read test? Both are writing at 205-210MB/s

In the past I've never done just, just chucked them in and hoped for the best, in all my NAS drives only 1 ever failed. But it's a smart idea and will be doing this in future, especially since these are my first externals - it makes sense not to shuck anything before being sure.

                • +1

@Click_It: Just finished gruesome 4 days of surface test including re-initialising, came back 100% health and just chucked them. First one I f'd up and damage one of the four internal clip, so that is a risky for any warranty purposes. However, 2nd turn up fine after lesson learnt from first one. Just swapped it with my 6tb and rebuilding the raid on my 918+.
