                  • @garetz: His calculations are just as valid if he buys redundant drives for a backup. It’s just a matter of putting a price on getting a unit replaced and having a guarantee that for X period of time, if a drive fails the replacement will be free. If you have a drive fail outside of the warranty you have additional costs to replace units.

                    • @Smigit: Thats only in the case of unlimited funds, i always think most people cannot afford to buy as many disks as they want.

          • @dualcore: Heliums good until it leaks… Stick to regular air drives.

This wouldn’t allow you run it 24x365 I think

      • +1

        *That

      • +1

Why not? I’ve run all sorts of drives 24x7 in a NAS including greens/SMRs. Some of my greens and SMRs have outlived WD reds. Honestly at this point I really question why bothering paying so much for better drives if they’re going into a ZFS/raid array anyway (& always being backed up independently)

        • +1

Depending on the cost difference, I feel the same. My NAS has largely static data anyway given it’s just storing multimedia, and most drives can manage that quite alright.

Maybe I’d pay it more mind if I was constantly recording from some security cameras or something and they had 24/7 write.

If the cost gap isn’t huge I’ll pay more for something better rated for the task, but I find the premium I’m happy to pay drops off pretty quick.

  • Can anyone comment if they're OEM or not?

    • No, they are retail ver.

      • Is this from your experience? I got a drive from Amazon and it arrived without retail packaging and after a check on the WD website, it turned out to be OEM.

        • Bought 2 of these couple of months ago at the last deal and they came in nondescript brown cardboard box and silver package, no retail box or pamphlets so think OEM

  • Thanks OP. Great price. Bought 2

  • thank you op..!!! bought 8 hahaha :)

  • good deal. now i can replace my entire nas.

  • Just noticed this is air filled compared to HC510 8TB which is helium filled, and I read that it is quieter and cooler. Not sure will the difference be significant though.

Edit: just noticed this is mentioned in comments above.

    • Heliums good until it leaks… Stick to regular air drives.

  • After having a Deskstar, I'm not buying anything with a star in its name.

    • +1

You mean Deathstar ? Those were the days.

  • Do any of you know whether there is tax associated with this? It is a US import, so, do we have to pay GST?

    • GST is included in the Amazon AU price. If you get to checkout, you'll see the breakdown/total and it includes GST

      • +1

        Thanks!

  • Max order quantity is now one!

    • That's unchanged. You can place multiple orders

  • Offer is still available. To get two I just increased the quantity in the cart.
edit: no it didn't like that!

  • Thanks OP. Ordered 4.. lets see how that goes..

  • I was about to order one but then I realised that there's no option to choose the HDD at the price of $290…did it just get sold out? :(

    • In-stock right now

  • Should I go for this or an Ironwolf 8TB which costs a bit more? Use case in a file server NAS.

  • These are available right now, not expired

    • Yeah but I think the price is back up to $302.79 making it less of a deal (as at 26/7/20 7:45pm). It was $286 just yesterday though when I ordered.

  • +2

These are back in stock for $283.
    Delivery estimated 21st - 25th August

    • Just saw that. Given mine still hasn't shipped and has an ETA Aug 12-19, is it worth cancelling to save $3.45? Maybe not, but if it the saving was >$15 then I probably would.

      • jace88 there's also increased cashback…

        • Even on PC parts?

  • Currently available from a 3rd party seller for $246.32 + $2.90 Delivery but they've got no feedback. Take a gamble?

    • I don't see that price available on Amazon but it sounds quite a bit cheaper than the Amazon price of $281.12 delivered with Prime. That being said if it were me, I'd happily buy something sold by and shipped by Amazon for peace of mind.

      • Yeah, Seller was de-listed shortly afterwards and money returned.

  • Mine arrived today. Shipped via FedEx. Hard drive came in a moisture-proof bag, with two deformable plastic shelves on each side, inside a generic (non Amazon branded) box. Presumably this is how Amazon's warehouse received it from the manufacturer.

    • Mine too. Except sent by DHL.

      • I could've sworn the delivery van was DHL branded (saw it driving off) but mine was FedEx based on the tracking ID. scratches head

  • +1

Yeah to all that jumped on this deal go and check your warranty stat, I just got mine today and it's invalid. This is the second drive I've received now in a row with no warranty. Previously I sent back the last dud warranty drive and got a refund and then I bought another thinking I can't possibly be that unlucky… why didn't I just continue buying Exos drives….

    • Hmm, I've checked both on WD and HGST warranty checks for the HC320 and neither come back positive. WD says no record. HGST says "The drive is not valid for warranty through HGST. Please return product to your point of purchase." if I select US, or " Please return drive to the point of purchase or system manufacturer." if I select Australia.

Edit: Spoke with Amazon and they emphasised it's manufacturer's 5 year warranty and not theirs, and I should contact the manufacturer if I have concerns. Basically said if I'm not happy with there being no warranty offered (even though the listing says it has a 5 year warranty), to refund the drive. I am now debating how much I value the data on the backup NAS as to whether I should refund this and just pay a bit more for an Ironwolf.

      • I was a little bit concerned as well. I've contacted amazon and they've reassured me that I can contact them within the 5Y period.

10:06 AM AEST Pathan: May I know the issue with the item?
10:07 AM AEST Richh1833: i have a drive that is DOA and will be returned to amazon for a refund. However, I wanted to confirm that warranty will be honoured by amazon in case my other drives fail as this product has a 5 year warranty
10:08 AM AEST Pathan: With Amazon you have a return policy for 1 year and after 1 year if you have any issue with the item you need to contact manufacturer directly
10:08 AM AEST Richh1833: the manufacturer has explicitly stated that i should contact the point of sale/retailer…?
they won't do an RMA for the product
10:08 AM AEST Pathan: Give me a minute Richard
10:09 AM AEST Pathan: Okay you can contact us if there is any issue with the item
10:11 AM AEST Richh1833: So can you please confirm that within the 5 year period from when the product was received - amazon will honour the warranty and will provide a refund/RMA for the product if a fault develops?
10:11 AM AEST Pathan: Yes right I confirm that

might help specifically mentioning that WD is asking us to contact them for assistance.

        • Thanks for sharing. Very different response to what I had. They just told me to refund it.

          • @jace88: no worries.. I bought 6 drives 1/4 from the first bunch was DOA with bad sectors. Still waiting for the next 2 + 1 new replacement. Considering that they won't even expedite a replacement (only option was to refund), I really don't wanna deal with a whole host of issues regarding warranty.

hope you don't get any dead drives.

            • @richh1833: I only ordered one but surface test with write/read in HD Sentintel came back positive. I ended up deciding it's no riskier than if I had shucked a drive anyway so left it at that.

  • For anyone ordering this again.. there might be some issues with shipping at the moment.

    • What kind of issues?

      • Most recent order - 5 days and it still hasn't been shipped. Order made 15 days ago - "carrier delay/operational issue". I'm not sure whats going on..

        • Oh wow, not a good sign.

          • @Ctn: maybe give the whirlpool amazon thread a read - interesting stuff all around. I might still get my package within their ETA so I can't fault them?

  • Down to $270 now! Get this while it lasts!
