$20 MasterCard Gift Card for $200 Spend for Visa to MasterCard Changeover

170

Westpac is swapping from Visa to MasterCard. I think this is a staggered changeover when your credit card expires. If you wait a few weeks after you receive your card and don't activate it you may receive this offer in email. Make sure to tick the receive marketing communications checkbox.

  1. This offer is only available to the addressee of this communication. Receive a $20 prepaid Mastercard Gift Card when you activate and use your Mastercard ending in <redacted>to spend $200 on eligible purchases between 04 July 2020 and 02 October 2020 inclusive (the "promotion period"). Eligible Purchases include purchases made on your card account but exclude payments to the Australian Taxation Office, interest, fees and charges (including GST payable on any of these), cash advances, cash equivalent transactions, BPAY payments, refunds and balance transfers. You should receive the prepaid Mastercard Gift Card approximately 4-6 weeks after you meet the spend requirement. This promotion is not available in conjunction with any other promotion and may be varied or withdrawn at any time, including if you apply to transfer to a different card product during the promotion period. Use of the prepaid Mastercard Gift Card is subject to terms and conditions.

Unlike most emails from big companies there's a reply email address instead of no-reply. I sent an email back asking if they can do better for the inconvenience of contacting direct debit suppliers otherwise I may just decide to cancel the card and go with another.

  • Just about to cancel my Westpac… MasterCard 😑

  • Debit cards or just credit?

    • Mine was credit card but I don't see why it wouldn't apply to debit cards as direct debits are inconvenient to changeover leading to a potential loss of customers.

I can see why; Westpac never had any Visa Debit cards.

Source: had a Debit MasterCard with Westpac since 2008

        • Yep I obviously didn't think when I asked. Can't get $20 for switching if I'm already using a mastercard.

  • Already got the gift card the other day and didn't even know I was eligible or that the promo existed. Nonetheless, I got $20 free so not bhed.

    • Did you activate your card as soon as you got it? Or did you wait?

      • It was already activated. Anyone could have stolen it out of the mail and used it without issue.

Assuming this is Credit card only as Westpac have used Mastercard for debit cards for at least 10 years

  • I was forced to changed from Visa to Master with City - no gift cards here :D

so it's a pretty good deal from Westpac

    • Same, received letters about the change. No choice from my end.

I wonder what's the underlying reason behind this change? Is there some dispute between Westpac and VISA?

      • Interchange fees by the bank, MasterCard have a lower fee so the banks get a better margin, before banks gave customers a choice or default to Visa … Now it's the other way around…

  • My westpac CC has always been a Mastercard, had it decade or so

Westpac had both Visa and Mastercard credit cards, but became a Mastercard-only bank a few years ago and phased out Visa cards. I had a Visa that expired in May this year that I closed a few months prior as I opened up a new Mastercard credit account. Had I kept it open, they would have sent me a Mastercard

  • thanks op. So you emailed back what was their reply?

    • Still waiting.

      • i dont like your chances but do keep us posted?. im tired of chasing up missing westpac extras credits over multiple different credit cards. one rep said it might be becuase some are still a visa and they can already see my mastercard replacement account oneline but it hasnt been issued yet. in the T/c's says one credit per merchant. i seem to only be getting 1 credit on the first card used now not the others and then need to chase them up for the missing ones. its a same their system sucks I think ill just stick to using 1 card per westpac extras offer from now on.

        • Still no reply. I might ring them up.

          • @brisdaz: I eventually rang them up since no reply to email. Unfortunately I couldn't get more discounts.

  • Wish Commonwealth Bank would do the same. All their cashbacks are with Mastercard, not VISA.

Because like Westpac, CBA phased out their Visa cards ages ago.
