  • Source. Second paragraph of the "worst models" section.

The XFX THICC II Pro suffers from high hotspot temperatures while the Mech and WindForce models are loud and despite that still run quite hot. We're also going to tentatively recommend you avoid the Asrock Challenger D. This one in particular we don't have on hand and have been unable to buy locally, but the fact that Asrock tried to avoid us testing it and it’s selling below the MSRP already, is not a good sign.

And if it's anything like the 5700 Challenger D it's not gonna be a good buy unless you're going to aftermarket cool.

    • I've never tried using an aftermarket cooler for a gpu. What are the pros and cons of it aside from voiding warranty and better cooling performance?

      • Pros:

        • More overclocking headroom.

        • Much quieter, it's mostly done on problematic cards with very loud and hot cooler designs.

        • Can be more aesthetically pleasing.

        Cons:

        • Some coolers can make the card significantly larger.

        • Typically costs north of $100 to do so you'd be better off just buying a better model to begin with.

You could do it for cheap, if the model is known to have a design flaw which is fixable and doesn't require a new cooler altogether. The reference RX 5700 is a good example, the heatsink lacked proper mounting pressure so the easiest mod was to use washers under the screws to tighten it down further.

        • Cheers. Have a reference 2080 and looking to swap cases to the Cooler Master NR200 once it's released. Want to look at my options before I actually pull the trigger on it.

          • @monchee: The reference 2080 should fit anyway, with breathing room to spare.

            • @Void: I'm sure it would. I'd probably just throw money at shuckable drives for my UnRaid setup. Thanks!

          • @monchee: haha i get a feeling that is going to be a very popular case… since i've given up on the H1 and any change at an ncase i'm waiting for that to be released too..

            • @scud70: I've given up on it too. It's just always unavailable. And looking at the temps from reviews, I'm leaning over the NR200 as I can freely choose my parts. Just to put it out there, I've also given up on the M1. Covid lockdowns are real.

              • @monchee: the H1 price is moronic as well… the pre-order price was $549 which i thought was stupid to begin with but then again it was a niche thing so thought lets see if it drops post launch .. then covid happened and now its $629 making it totally pointless in every way.. the NR + a bigger RAD + a gold/platinum SFX psu will still come in way cheaper!

                • @scud70: Lol $550 for a case just so your PC can look like the device of a "console peasant". Well done NZXT! /s

                  • @Void: well case + psu + 140mm Rad + GST + Aus conversion rate (even then it didnt add up math wise lol) … not sure if new xbox will have that setup though hahaha

                    • @scud70: Ah so more like:

p for PSU, a for AIO, r for riser and c for Case

                      9c/10 = 550 - p - a - r
                      9c/10 = 550 - 150 - 120 - 40
                      9c/10 = 240
                      9c = 2400
                      c ≈ 266.66

That's still pretty messed up. Now I'm having a brain fart and thinking I need to redo the math lol.

                      Edit: Forgot the riser.

it really depends if you can find aftermarket cooling for that specific AIB pcb/card .. a lot of the aftermarket cooling is made for the reference PCB's that get released by AMD or Nvidia … Benefits wise, there is if the AIB is totally stuffed the cooling solution they are providing …and it lets you overclock them a bit better etc so the usual benefits.

Most aftermarket coolers i've seen are water cooling based not too many air cooling aftermarket stuff for GPU's .. (to my knowledge)

        • Arctic Accelero is the most popular air model. You're right, they need a particular PCB. Usually the go-to is just a Kraken G12 and an AIO.

      • I would not recommend you to use aftermarket AIO or air cooler. This will void the warranty (probably not for some brands), the AIO is quite expensive even if I import from China directly, around $300 for alphacool AIO with 360mm radiator. However the temp will be decreased significantly(80C to 50C-60C under full load), and the noise will be reduced as well according to the feedback.

I would rather to pay more to buy such as sea hawk series.

It's also worth pointing out that XFX THICC (III) as opposed to (II) is actually a really good variant. The Roman number at the denoting the number of cooler fans. I believe the PCB is identical

      • +1

Yes I have often heard people bashing the THICC II but praising the THICC III and THICC III Ultra on the net.

The delivery fee often kills these deals from Shopping Express.

    • It's only $10 to Melbourne at checkout. At least for the 5600 XT it is.

  • This seems a good price for the Z490M board yeah?

  • Don't forget that shopping express also adds in a 1% surcharge at the end. So the actual cost is:

    Item + Shipping + Surcharge

Just ordered a 970 Evo Plus SSD and got stung with the surcharge. I paid with PayPal.
