I was going to buy this rather than my more expensive VAIO, but No GFX, weighing at 1.88kg it definitely is a Netbook cruncher !

The point of this system is the "smallish screen" but

    • There's no point getting larger — all you're doing is increasing the size and weight of the laptop you have to carry — there's no gain in resolution.

A lot of mainstream 14 and 15" laptops have 1366x768, if you want a laptop of that size and spec there are already plenty in the market at the same price point.

This laptop is definitely much nicer than the Lenovo E320 and has longer battery life to boot. Keyboard might not be as good though and the CPU is first generation.

      • Why is it better than the e320? Im looking at both atm.

Its closer to the 'ultrabook' category' - low weight and long battery life.

      • I prefer the red nipple.

  • Anyone know if Dickies do a price guarantee as i bought this for my mum only 5 days ago for $649 and now its $99 cheaper!? Would it be easier to just return it and then buy it again?

I think they used to, just call up and ask.

    • I remember going back for a refund of the price difference about a year ago for the Wii after the price dropped. Not sure if they still do it now.

      • I think they do… saw it on the website a little while ago.

    • I work for Dick Smith, and yes we do, providing it its within 14 days (which you are)!

I'm tempted to grab one of these to replace my old Netbook for when I travel on holidays and don't want to lug the fullsized lappy around…… might go check it out tonight.
    I can't stand 1366x768 on anything larger than a 13" screen… on a 15.6" it's just horrible :(

  • How come this thing can manage 10 hours battery life with core i5 ?

    • In reality it will only manage half that. The 10 hours is if the wifi is off and screen is dimmed right down…

      • so that's 5hours - good enough for me anyways.! LOL gonna head down and get one straight away! Cool stuff!

        • +1

I have one of these and yes it can get extrodinary life out of the i5, and not necessarily with wifi off and screen dimmed right down.

It has a "super hybrid mode" that underclocks it down to netbook speed and does who know what else. I find this mode ideal for watching videos. Play your .mkv's in media player classic home cinema, and it will play in dxva mode which means that the decoding is offloaded to the GPU. CPU underclocked + GPU decoding = a very efficient way of watching videos.

Super Hybrid Mode is also good for general browsing the internet too.

  • Support small business:

Check out www.onlinecomputer.com.au - they've had this at this price for a while.

There's a physical shop near Central Station, and shipping is always cheap or free. I check the site whenever any of my friends need a computer - it's well-known among ozbugs.

PS: I have no connection to them.

  • wow this unit is gonna kill off e350 eeepc's

  • I looked at this a little while back. Ended up with a toshiba for around the same price, much better 13 inch lappy. This asus is a bit too plasticy especially at the back of the keyboard ( plus my son wanted a DVD drive built in)

    • +3

      which toshiba?

      • A white toshiba L730

    • +2

the plastic and the lack of an optical drive are what makes it light.

      • When I say plasticy I mean the plastic is really thin and flexes by a good 5 mm or more near the screen.

  • I'm really curious about what kind of battery can last 10 HOURS for a laptop

    • Me2. Anyone have this laptop and can confirm the battery lasts for 10 hours?

      • The Super Hybrid Engine makes it 10% faster and it last for 10+ hours if u use battery saving mode, using entertainment/high performance mode obviously lasts for less time

      • I have the Asus ul30vt, which was the predecessor of the U31F. Asus stated that the battery would last up to 12 hours; however I could only get about 10 hours- this is on battery saving mode, the brightness turned down, wifi on, word processing and internet browsing. I usually say, when Asus quotes a certain amount of time, for general use with battery mode on, it is in fact minus 2 hours off what they quote. It would be safe to assume that battery lasts approx. 8 hours on battery saving mode, I have confirmed this with two friends who own the U31F.

  • COTD was selling this for $599 the other day

but i reckon the Acer 4830TG is better buy —> ttp://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/55218

    i5-2410M/14"/4GB/750GB/GT540M/8hr battery/2.2Kg

$699 after cashback including 3year warranty.

    • Acer is crap…tbh. I see so many faulty units returned to my work.

      • I agreed, Acer doesn't last!

  • Great deal for an excellent laptop. Part of me wishes I had waited for this instead of getting my HP DV6-313TX and Lenovo E320.

  • I use this and like it - my reason for buying it is for traveling because of the light weight.
I also now use it as my main PC with an external USB keyboard / mouse and external monitor.

The new price is tempting - can I find a use for another one…

  • When does this deal expire?

  • I bought one of these, and I absolutely love it!

For me i wanted something travel size (my previous was a 10inch lenovo atom) and for a modest size and weight increase, I get a far superior processor, battery, build quality and generally functional pc.

I much prefer the screen size to the 10 inch, and the keyboard is way more functional for my man hands.

1080p video without even breaking a sweat, and gaming, yes, gaming!!! I never could have imagined that on the netbook.

$551 @ dick smiths was literally a steal! If, I could possibly try to strain myself for some cons, I would say the screen is a touch too reflective for my personal liking, but a great screen otherwise. Also the keyboard sits on what could be stated as a bit flimsy plastic, but otherwise is well spaced out and functional. And finally, the stated 10 hours of battery life in power saving mode, is obviously a touch more than reality. But you should be able to get at least 6 hours of real world use without issue.

If you in the market for a functional pc for travel or uni, you have already found it.
