  • thank you. just order one :)

  • I have a 2tb 660p for storage not os… considering this. Opinions? Is this faster?

    • Depends on your needs. This is a sata drive (capped at 500mb speeds) vs 660p which is nvme with speeds over 1000mb. You are sacrificing life span and storage space for speed when comparing these models. I would stick with the 660p.

      • +2

Yeah I guessed as much . Going back to SATA from nvme definitely feels like a downgrade.

  • Can you explain where the $91 cashback comes from?

  • +1

Thank you just ordered 8 for my nas xD

…I operate a server which serves around 500 people…all documents, desktops, etc are backed up to the server…our file server doesn't even get 750GB full. (Raid 10)

      • +4

Yes but your 500 people don't have a stash of Linux isos.

        /s

      • +13

I operate a server which servers around 1 person and it’s almost full 120TB raidz2

        • +4

This is your personal server filled with hi res linux isos right?

          • +13

@xoom: Nah pirated movies and tv shows

          • @xoom: 4k linux isos for sure

        • one of 119TB are torrents :-)

    • +1

Sorry your order has been cancelled.

  • Is this price error ?

  • +5

4tb SSD drives are only for those "who can" at present.

From a value perspective & for most users, you're better of with a 4TB Seagate or WD Black, at least until these come way more down in price.

    • +8

This 4tb ssd will last many more years than conventional hdd. To me it worth the added security. Also less power usage, less noise, and less time to complete the read and write task. It will pay for itself in a year for the time saved.

      • you r right.
speaking of time saved, I would have earned at least five drives if i didnt refresh ozbargain every hour.

        • haha, depend how you are looking at it. It could be a time waste + purchase items that are not needed.

    • Also have you ever dismantled a hard drive? It's rather simple inside. I felt the conventional hard disk are way over price for what you get.

  • +3

I know this is a good price, but this seems like a lot of money to me for something that will probably be $200 in a years time.

    • +2

      Yeah but thats 2 years time….. :P

    • -2

I doubt it with the current dysfunctional world environment.

    • I doubt it'll go that low that fast but I hope you are right so I can smash my 28 degrees price protection.

    • +7

Not a chance in hell it's $200 next year.

      • +1

        Dreaming.
2TB drives haven’t hit the $200 mark let alone 4TB

      • +1

With games consoles moving to super fast SSDs, the production volume of more advanced tech is going to increase exponentially. SSD prices are going to plummet.

        • +2

          1/4 the price?

          Yeah, good luck with that.

Lemme know how proprietary storage worked for Sony before…. that's what MS is doing already.

          • -2

@scuderiarmani: I don’t think you understand economies of scale

            • @[Deactivated]: I don't think you understand why they won't reduce it to 1/4.

I eagerly await your 4tb $200 deals next year.

I also look forward to you seeing the 1tb Seagate Storage MS has exclusive with them and the frightening costs.

              • -4

@scuderiarmani: If you suddenly quadruple the volume of a similar, but superior product, I'm pretty sure that prices will fall by that kind of amount. The Xbox Series X production lines are being tooled right now, you're talking tens of millions of consoles with better SSDs than this, which means many more silicon dyes. Not only will the price drop massively, but the product in a year's time will be much faster.

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: Better yes. Different yes. 1tb yes.

You keep holding your breath for $200 4tb SSDs. Try 2tb.

                  Like I said. Dreaming.

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: I understand economies of scale, it's inversely proportional relationship. However, doubling the volume of products doesn't half the end product's final cost as you suggest. I suspect we might see 2TB at $200 by the end of next year but 4TB, no way.

        • +1

The secondary issue - is that the game consoles aren't going to expand the market that much.

PC sales (eg laptops and desktops): ~ 350 million per year
Game Consoles: ~30 million per year.

          • @Gareth: Yeah but these games consoles are raising the bar in terms of SSD performance for the masses.

            • @[Deactivated]: But they aren't using these 4tb drives.

              They are using something different.

And as above, SSD sales have been significant without Consoles.

        • It is already very low. I don't believe it will plummet.

          • -1

@Black Hole: Yes, because if there's one thing history has taught us, it's that computer equipment never gets cheaper.

  • +5

    2 x 2TB MX500s = $630

So this is exceptional value if you need the space.

    Great find OP.

  • Currently running a 4TB WD Black, so tempted to get this instead.
The WD black seems a bit noisy and blocks air flow in my small sm560 case.

    • +1

      Your SSD has noise?

  • +3

I cant wait for 4TB or preferably 8TB m2 drives to become more common. SATA is fine, i dont need my games drives to be NVME necessarilly. I want to be able to remove all mechanical drives, the drive cages and associated cabling from my system. At the moment, the mechanical drive in my pc is by far the noisiest component. Hopefully the m2 drives start dropping in price down to this level soon.

    • +2

Yeah thats what I'm waiting for too. Really loathe to go back to SATA with the associated cables and stuff.

    • Agreed. Cables suck.

    • Me too, I wonder though if by that time if the scale of quality in the files we access will have blown out to nullify the wait.

  • I bought the QVO variant of this about 6 months ago for a similar price and now I'm really contemplating this to run alongside it. Hmm.

  • How does Samsung give the cash back? Is it just a deposit in your account, or a gift card?

    • +1

Deposit, a long time after…. and make sure you keep proof.

  • Extremely good value considering you can get a WD BLUE 4TB for $700~

  • +1

Planning to get a WD Black 6TB for $400ish.

Would it be a good move to play $300 more for a SSD now, and another one in the future as the price comes down?

The 6TB is goes to replace 2 x 2TB, if I go the SSD route, still need to keep 1 of the 2 TB around.

    • thing is, 860 is only going to drop price further as the market shifts to NVME.

      • They were halving in price every year until about 18 ish months ago, you could get them for basically this when stacking eBay and cashback at that point, so they've not really dropped much at all. They're just slotting in NVME options at higher prices, or QVO etc (which also has seen similar prices 18 months ago). At least in high capacity options. The 1TB/2TB ones are where the price drop action has been.

        • Yeah that’s the exact reason why I have a 1tb boot/2tb data nvme in my setup . Pure data archival is using a pair of 8tb HDD. I don’t think a 4tb SATA for me would be moving forward though.

        • Probably also due to weak exchange rate.

          • @browser: The exchange rate is within 1c of where it was 18 months ago. It’s bounced back, vs USD anyway. Maybe that hasn’t flowed through to current stock but the majority seems to be a significant slow down in price declines.

    • Now that it's out of stock, kind of made the decision for me. Anyway never really considered a high capacity SSD until this post, also because I'm about to get the WD 6TB, so feels like it's only $300 more instead of $700 for a drive.

  • -8

1tb is the sweet spot, as long as HDD exist theres no purpose for ssd higher then 1tb, as of now!!! Itln time in next 5 years sure that is when the cost comes down.

However the biggest downfall to ssd over HDD, now this's entirely unrelated to what you personally use it for, but games that consist of permadeath mode, given the nature of ssd's and session states, you can definitely gaurentee it deleting your save, compared to HDD way how it stores information.

    • Can't even tell if you are serious or not anymore

  • -1

1tb ssd is the sweet spot.

Buying a 4tb ssd over a 13tb HDD for less then $350 I'm sure intelligence can see the huge difference.
