Hi folks,

Thought those looking for a new netbook might be interested in this Asus from bhphotovideo.com.

Fairly typical netbook type specs with the exception of a 12.1", 1366x768 screen, and AMD C-50 processor and AMD HD 6250. For those that don't know the C-50 platform can hardware decode 1080p video really nicely. It also comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, and they have it in red and black in addition to silver.

At $330 shipped it seemed better value than what local stores are offering.

    Shipping is overkill!

    • +15

Capitalise it. I hate it when people complain about shipping when the total price is still a bargain.

        • +6

Save time and health? What does that even mean?

And the cheapest similar 12" ultraportable I could find was $482: http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=eee+pc+1215b&sp…

        • +5

          You're comparing a 14" screen to a 12" screen…

        • Maybe he means support local retailers?

        • +6

A 14" is portable. A 12" is an ultraportable. The one you linked is 2.1kg whereas this is 1.45kg. See the difference?

        • +3

Actually the other thing I forgot to point out initially is that this netbook comes with Windows 7 Home Premium installed, which is a bit better than the Home basic a lot come with.

Something worth considering if you were also looking at the Clevo Horize posted earlier.

        • +3

          …/facepalm

I have no idea why you're comparing it now with a netbook.

        • +3

It's a lot of comparing apples with oranges really. People have different preferences, some will prefer the small size and low price of the OW deal, others value HD playback and 1366x768 screen resolution. Some will prefer the bigger screen of the Clevo Horize. They're all pretty good deals IMO.
You get a bit more but you pay for it.
Ah isnt that the same with everything, what you're saying is not making any sense, find a netbook/laptop whatever with a 12" 1024x768 screen that is cheaper than this, then we'll talk.

  • +6

Wow I'd love to live in the states so I could get a bargain AND not pay 60 dollars shipping

    • +4

I was in New York earlier this year and went to B&H thinking I could stock up on gear without shipping costs… but I didn't realise those prices don't include US state tax. So, you'd still have to pay roughly 9% extra. So for this item, still be cheaper, but some other things (generally light but expensive, e.g. camera lenses) were cheaper to get shipped here than buy in the store.

Most of us will be happy if the netbook is 322.81 and shipping is 10.

    • +2

It would be even better value if the netbook was $331.81 and shipping was $1.

      • +1

It would be even better value if the netbook was $332.81 and shipping was FREE!

  • it deal still doesnt beat the $238 deal of Asus 1015b, same spec, only screen is smaller

    • +9

can't go back to 10" netbook now that I am on a 12.1" eeepc.
imo 12" is the best size for a compromise between work and portability.

  • "Please note: Online ordering is unavailable until Saturday 7:18 PM EDT. Feel free to browse our site and add items to your cart or wishlist. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patronage."

    And at the top

    "Succos Holiday Closing

We are not accepting orders at this time. Online ordering will resume on Saturday, October 22, at 7:15PM EDT. The B&H SuperStore and offices are currently closed. We will reopen on Sunday, October 23 at 10:00AM EDT."

I had to look up Succos, it's a Jewish holiday.

  • How about ship it to shipito, then forward to OZ.

    • +1

Shipito would work out almost to the same price, but take a little longer getting to you.

Good price for a light 12.1" with 6 cell battery, but I think I would be annoyed at the 1Ghz CPU and 1Gb of ram for day to day use when travelling.

Probably best for student use doing word processing tasks all day.

      • What is your day to day use anyway?

For me, when travelling, it's maybe up to an hour on the web. And I've been using a 10" netbook with a n450, and it's been perfectly fine

Seriously considering this one for the extra real estate size!

        • Well for travelling, it would be good for emails and for movie playback where the 12.1" + 6 cells would be great. The problem for me is that I am also a tab whore, I always have heaps of tabs open. this it where the 1GB of ram (easy enough to upgrade) and 1Ghz processor would become frustrating.

But as I said it's still a good price.

  • How much would it be to buy 4GB RAM in Aus? It has 1GB PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM installed.

    • about $25 at MSY or $28 on eBay for 4Gb DDR3 SODIMM. Or cheaper from Netplus if they do another RAM deal, which is where I got my last ones from.

    • +1

I was going to say don't bother, just get a second 1gig stick for ~$10 on staticice as this does have a second ram slot. But at 25 bucks yeah just get a 4gig kit, might as well :).

I say kit (2sticks) rather than one as ram works better with 2 identical sticks, and 2 will have faster access speeds than one (I think)

    • I'd highly recommend getting more ram, I just went down to MSY and got a 2gb stick and stuck it in the second slot, was only $14.

Performance wasn't great with only 1gb.

    • If you're buying this deal, you might want to check out t he RAM prices @ B&H. You're already paying for the shipping, so might be able to get it a bit cheaper than here (especially if AUS dollar remains strong).

  • +2

A couple of years ago, I bought a netbook from bhphotovideos too. The shipping was over $70 but the total price was $AUD458 while that model was sold in Aus over $600… and it was when US dollar was much stronger.

you'll need to budget a replacement charger since US is 110v

    • Don't they automatically switch to 220v?

    • +1

ASUS laptop chargers support voltage from 100-240v. You'll only need an Australian plug adaptor or change the two pin cable that plugs into the small charger brick.

  • I was originally looking at getting this one: http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts.aspx?qryPart=13195 which looks like a slightly improved model of the one here. Is the difference in price worth the specs? (also the fact that it'll be local so that is an advantage for warranty purposes).

  • pity they didn't do special for "Eee PC 1215B-PU17 12.1"
E350/450 is much quicker than c50 and the display card is better…
