Made in Australia from at least 21% Australian ingredients

    • +7

      and probably around 30-50% water…

    • +5

Even more fascinating is that it is 89% pork!

Therefore some parts of the pork are Australian and some aren't. The mind boggles.

      • +7

Having spoken with one of the company reps that supply this product to supermarkets around Australia, I can answer this.
Speaking for the whole company of Primo as a brand, apparently they sell through more pork products than Australia can source and supply.
Meaning that they need to source excess pork from various parts of Europe to keep up with national demand.

Although, and this is my opinion. If we didn't export pork outside of Australia, we'd have no problem keeping it 100% Australian made.

        • +9

I remember this one from last year, foreign imports are cheaper then producing locally.

          https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.abc.net.au/article/11363…

Primo could source Australian but market demand wants cheap meat not Australia meat.

        • +1

same with seafood, if we didn’t export, we would not need to import …

        • +2

That is the standard line from any company that uses imported ingredients, and is code for 'they are cheaper'.

        • I'm assuming ABP (Australian Born/Bred Pigs) can fetch more $$$ by exporting and the cost of import FBP (Foreign) is cheaper? e.g. export $10 per pig unit, import is $5 per pig unit.

Can anyone comment on the net financial benefit?

Most bacon in Australia is so bad! The only bacon that I've found that tastes close to the bacon you get in the UK is by Pialligo Estate from Harris Farm. It's pricey at $10 though. But worth it.

      • +1

        $10 for how much?

      • +1

Agree. The first thing i eat when i go home is a bacon butty. Same goes for pork sausages

      • -1

The british bacon from Coles is good stuff

    • +3

…yeh this is crap bacon. barely resembles shortcut bacon

    • +5

We should give buyers tax refund whoever buys Australian. Quickest way to take our manufacturing back from china

  • +6

    Water flavoured bacon

    • +1

      makes your mouth water.

    • hot ham water

    • +1

They could have at least been sneaky and listed it as brine.

  • +2

I bought this during the last half price sale in June and the use by date was July..Not sure but the colour looked a bit off.

    • +4

The colour should always be a bright pink, if it ever starts going a light brown.. that doesn't mean its off, but it's headed there.
1 month date on bacon though is pretty good, especially considering freezing it and defrosting it still taste the exact same.

      • I think it looked like it was turning to a whitish pink and getting a bit slimy..I probably wouldn’t consider buy it again at half price when it’s normally on sale $10-$11 with a longer expiry.

        • +3

Slimy from date of your purchase? I usually freeze it right away (but split into smaller portions in separate bags) if I don’t intent to eat it the next few days.

          • @SF3: I bought it during the week and opened it on the weekend..The water in the packet was a bit more slimy than when I usually purchase it when it wasn’t on sale.

    • +1

Did the same (tho date was better). Threw most out. Didn't pass taste test. Lesson learnt!

  • -1

    It’s not made with pork

    • It may explain why the B is capitalised in the actual product description.

  • -1

It’s not made with pork 500g 100% Australian pork bacon in Coles n woolies n uhd $7

    • +1

      what?

      • -5

Ops product is not made with pork
Thanks for the negatives but it still isn’t made with pork

        • +3

How can it not be pork when the first ingredient is pork?

          • -2

@whitelie: It’s not pork it’s made in Australia with maybe 23%australian ingredients but it’s not pork

            • +3

@Dex38313: Just because it's not sourced from Australia doesn't mean it's not pork…other countries also breed pigs you know.

At least Coles mention where the "pork that isn't pork" comes from

Made with pork sourced from North America or Europe.

              • @whitelie: the other 77 % might me made with soylent green.

              • @whitelie: I am sceptical about that statement. The only thing binding in the law is the percentage of Australian ingredients. I.e. they could be using pork from any other country and not face any penalty for making that statement.

Under the Country of Origin labelling law that is.

  • +3

Try the d’orsogna one frol Woolies deli. They are $13/kg when on special. Taste a lot better than Primo

  • +1

btw is Pialligo Estate any good?

    • Easily the best Australian bacon going around

    • This got me searching.

According to wikipedia - its current parent company is USA based, it's parent company is from Brazil.

Where's the grandparent company from ?

        • +4

Brazil. You must mean the great grandparent

  • +6

cheaper at Aldi with everyday price

    • & probably tastes better too

    • I have to agree with this.

    • What is the price of the equivalent at aldi?

      • +1

        1kg for just under $10

    • +1

Aldi bacon doesn't taste nice. It's too thick to chew through.

      • +1

Never had a problem. Dice it for omelette, slice it in strips for pizza, sliced as is in toasted rolls… Taste nice.

        • I agree. I wouldn’t pay for Aldi bacon since it’s imported however when I was given a pack of it ~2 years ago I thought it was ok as far as thickness and taste goes.

    • I wish Aldi sold Australian bacon. I keep looking semi-regularly, and every pack I've seen at Aldi in the past year has been 0% made in Australia.

    Half-price?

    Sold $11/kg all year long:

Same bacon, different packaging. I worked there.

  • +2

This is a delightfully devilish deal. I find this sauce goes quite well with the occasional steamed ham, deglazed in my cast iron pan.

  • Also bogan life hack - I use this instead of mince with cabbage, some eggs and rice noodles to make bacon chow mein. 🥓

    • recipe

      • No formal recipe, just eyeball estimates for the cabbage and bacon, and add grated carrot, bean sprouts and a can of water chestnuts. Soy, oyster sauce and stock for flavour. I cook the bacon first then add it at the end.

  • +2

People really buy this crap for a normal price of $20kg?

    • +1

No they don't. It is an artificially inflated price.

  • +2

Most bacon is too thick in this country. It's more like gammon.

    • +1

Depends on the quality. The mass produced, imported stuff needs to be thin or better yet, streaky IMO but if you've ever made your own bacon, it can be inch thick

      • whats streaky

        • +2

Is cut from the belly rather than the loin so has more fat in it. Tastier and crispier whilst still remaining tender if not over cooked.

          • +1

@whitelie: A fellow bacon man of culture. Protip - Costco has the best streaky bacon I've had. You haven't experienced bacon till you've had proper streaky bacon.

    • I, Gamon, will save us!

  • I'm avoiding Woolies this week and next week at least. Damn inconvenient. But if they're willing to source product for Sydney from Wodonga with the borders supposedly closed, just to break a 24 hour strike with a 4 day lockout, I'm not risking it. Irresponsible.

  • How do wet cured bacon compare to dry cured? I haven't tried dry cured bacon before.

I'm not necessarily an activist and I understand why ppl eat meat ( I do too) but i think there is a lot of improvement that needs to be done in relation to pig farming and there needs to be more prominent awareness about it. (Rather than Karen standing up for her right not to wear masks being on multiple TV media channels)

    • +2

All the more reason to eat Australian pork instead of the cheap imported stuff.
Those videos are from overseas and they're appalling. However, I did a stint at a pig farm out near Castlemaine once as a student and can confirm they were pretty bloody good. We've got better welfare and better food safety standards too.

  • +2

The fact that Woolworths are selling BACON with anything less than 90+% AUSTRALIAN Bacon, is horrible! I'm not trying to get on a soap box, but this is one thing that Woolworths, and its suppliers, can get in our OWN backyard. It is one stat that I now look at for these items.

    • Most bacon from both wools and coles is from imported ingredients.

  • +1

No one comment on the preservative used?

  • Woolworths does not sell one single bacon product of any quality. It is all muck.

    • +3

I love muck. Is there a sale on muck? Please share link for muck.

    • They actually do sell some made with Australian pork but you really have to look hard to find it.

  • +1

my preferred supermarket bacon. yes its australian.
    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/476944/ber…

  • show 15$20/kg for me

    • I found that it doesn't usually update (maybe until the morning).
