The price of the Seagate 10TB shuckable keeps dropping.

This was posted earlier in the month https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551231.

Someone reported in the thread that the drive inside is a Seagate Exos X16 10TB 7200 RPM. I've previously shucked one and gotten a barracuda pro.
Majority of the internal drives are barracuda pros with a slim chance of either an ironwolf or exos drive.

The seagate external drives come with AU plugs. So stop asking.

Highly recommended to do a write check to see if there are bad sectors before shucking. Use a program like HD Tune. Takes close to two days.

ditto. You aren't going to hit that kind of workload in a normal consumer/desktop use and the Barracuda Pro 10TB has great performance, and solid endurance vs typical consumer grade drives. If you happen to get lucky with an Ironwolf or Exos X16, you'll get the same solid performance plus even more endurance.

  • 10Tb? I kinda want one of these but seriously have no idea how I'd fill it. Currently have a 2Tb and 40 odd % of that is free space. Do people have these for torrenting stuff or what?

      Linux distros!

      Good for photographers, bluray rips

  • Ordered mine on Saturday morning 01/08/20 and it still has not shipped.
Anyone else here have same issue or already shipped out?

    • Mine took ages to ship (ordered in the July deal)… but on the flipside, I got an Exos X16 so it was worth the wait :)

Removed the expiry from this deal as it's back in stock at $283.47 as at 11am on 11/8/2020.

  • Got mine yesterday. Barracuda Pro inside. Wow these things are pretty noisy compared to the old WD drives i have? Lots of zipping spinning popping cracking gurgling noises like twice as loud as my other older drives. i guess that's just how they are.

    • Did you do a disk check before shucking?

I've got mine in my desktop so can barely hear it above the fans.

      • No i didn't do a full disk error check but all the SMART stats show ok and it seems to be running full speed an feels normal other than loud strange sounds.
Here is a close recording i did on my phone… it is amplified but yeah i guess its hard-drivey sounds but more extreme than i'm used too https://clyp.it/ny34pinx

        • if it has clacking sound like that like that i will be cautious, there possibility it might fail sooner than later.
a drive can be loud, but it will be constant loud and not intermittent clacking and popping like that.

Relatively normal for this drive I believe, lots of other information on it around Reddit and other places.

I had a WD Blue in the desktop before this, and everything else being equal the Barracuda Pro is certainly more audible - nothing too alarming just normal workings though.

Got my drive. It has many electrical plug adaptors in the box including a 2 pin AU plug for the power brick plus a Australian Consumer Law warranty slip, must be cheaper for Seagate to just make 1 package for the world.

From CystalDiskInfo internally my drive is a BarraCuda Pro 10TB ST10000DM0004-2GR11L and CrystalDiskMark pulls 248MB per second read and 247 MB per second write from USB which is a 100mb per second quicker than the SMR Barracuda 2TB SATA drive in my PC which only goes up to 150MB per second read and 97MB per second write. May order a second one now as the price, performance and $ per TB is alot cheaper than the retail desktop drives and has 50% of the performance on a SATA SSD.

    Mine arrived today.

    It's a ST10000NM001G-2MW103
    (Exos X16)

Date of Manufacture is May 2020.

    Got mine today.

The box was pretty beat up, just the retail box itself, no cardboard box or even bubble wrapping. I couldn't even plug the USB cable in because the port was bent, have to force my way in (that's what she said). I'm running HD Tune error check now, seems it will only take 12 hours, way less than 2 days OP claimed.

Should I wait for the test result or simply return it? I believe it is only one year warranty.

I think mine originally came without extra packaging. I hope you took pics. I think it would be worth asking amazon for a replacement.

      • +1

Thanks mate. Yes, I did take some photos, lesson learned from eBay. I'll see how I go with their online chat, been great in the past. Hopefully, there will be no drama.

    • I got mine today, the holo sticker was damaged but there was a premium transparent sticker that covered it. When I opened it, I realised it was already shucked. There was a rattling sound when I shake the drive which was the broken clips which eventually came out through the holes. The power and usb3 socket was out of alignment to the point where I can't plug it in, casing was not shut properly in a few sections. Took pictures throughout.

Contacted Amazon and they said they can only refund it since the seller is no longer there.

      Definitely red flags all over.

Sorry about your experience, but there is a batch of drives shucked and clumsily put back and ended up with Amazon. I would say refund it if you have evidence of tampering.

Got mine today and it's an IronWolf Pro, pretty lucky

  • +3

Received mine earlier this week. Used SeaTools to do a full scan - this took nearly 5 days to complete but passed. I figured better to use SeaTools since it's Seagate's own diagnostic tool, the logs might've been better suited to a warranty claim, had that been necessary. Shucked it today, BarraCuda Pro (ST10000DM0004) inside - happy with that.
Oh yeah, the AC adapter came with multiple fittings for different power outlets, including Aus; so no problem there.

    • So mine arrived pretty beat up. But HD tune pro shows no error on a full scan. Can I rely on that report and assume there is no damage internally? Not sure if the knock will have any long term impact which can’t be detected.

      • +1

Not sure mate, I'm unfamiliar with the tool. Like I said, I went with the SeaTools full scan, but you'll need to be prepared to wait nearly 5 days for it to finish. Your disk is probably fine but I preferred to be as certain as I could before I shucked.

  • I got mine back in mid June. did write test before shucking and it all went well but now both volumes keeps crashing on it in my Synology NAS. all the rest of the HDD in NAS are fine. Amazon is offering refund but price is close to $400 right now.

any idea how I can get replacement from Seagate ?

    • +1

You need to confirm the drives actually have an issue first - put them into an old desktop, and run SeaTools to find out the fault code.

Once you have it, use the https://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/warranty-and-replaceme… process to get the drive replaced.

      • Thanks mate. I don’t have a windows computer to run Seatools but it’s something I can organise once this stage 4 lockdown is lifted.

For now, I’ve run SMART test and also contacted synology Team for support. SMART is reporting “UDMA CRC error count” which is related to errors detected when a retransmission request is recorded. Synology calls it “drive reconnection count”.

Google and synology both recommended that I try a different cable / interface. So far I’ve connected another drive in the same bay on my NAS and it’s been working fine. That tells me the interface is fine.

Coming to the point, if I send this to seagate via the warranty process, they will find out that I shucked it hence the chance of refusing warranty. Also cost to send it. Amazon on the other hand has just offered a full refund and they will supply postage label too. Obvious issue with that it, I need to wait for the drive to be available again for $299 and then order it.

Any suggestions? Does anyone have experience of shucked drive warranty with Seagate? Thanks

        • Would be safer accepting the return from Amazon. I did see an article where someone returned a shucked drive but put a smaller drive back in. So they're not checking - I'm not endorsing you do that either.

Aussie dollar is improving so there may be another deal on the horizon. 16TB drives (with exos drives) are sort of cheap - around $450.

          • +1

@Caped Baldy: yeah I opted for that. not replacing it with smaller drive lol.

returned to amazon. and order a new one from amazon AU ($370ish). amazon refunded the difference to what I originally ordered for.

So it cost me the same and replacement drive has been delivered today. this one should be good, high unlikely two of them having an issue. it might be by NAS slot as the issue could be on either side.

edit: on the 16tb, I thought about it but my NAS officially doesn't support anything bigger than 10tb. and Baracuda Pro is a officially supported mode so its easier to get support from Synology if needed.

            • @fifoo: That's great. Got to love amazon customer support.
