Waste of money buying this over the 3600

  • +22

Ryzen 5 3600 for $266 is much better value.

    • +10

for gaming that price differential is better spent on GPU

  • +2

Don't buy it though. 400MHz isn't going to magically alleviate a CPU bottleneck (not that the 3600 bottlenecks ITFP), you'd be better off spending the money on B-die and the little extra on a factory OC'd or better cooled GPU.

    • didn't the independent benchmarks find only ~100mhz higher than 3600 in practice?

      • Prrrobably.

  • +3

Better off buying the Ryzen 5 3600 now then use the savings to buy the new 4000 series when they go on sale late next year.

    • This.
This is what I’m waiting for. I was also impressed with the 3800XT’s performance relative to the 10700k. Who knows what 4000 series will be like.

  • +2

Why is this so much more than the 3600?

    • +1

It only just came out so early adopter tax. Definitely not worth it though.

XT's are using higher quality binned chiplets, so they can clock marginally higher / lower voltage for said clocks.

They're giving you the chiplets that previously were only held back for 24, & 48 core Epycs and 24 core Threadrippers, as they probably have an excess of these better binned chiplets for those now.

One could also argue that because the original cpus have dropped so much in price now that this is a way to get their average sales pricing back up by charging more for these chips, but that argument is somewhat flawed as they're still selling Epyc at volume, and one would assume that there is also a reasonable amount of demand for the new 8 memory channel Threadripper Pro chips in the target market (workstations with all the typical big oem support & qualifications required for production grade systems). They're going to make a heck of a lot more money from those sales than on the standard Ryzen line, even with this $120-150 price bump for the XT series.

    3% better performance for $120 more. https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-3600XT-vs-…

Only 200mhz higher base clock and 300mhz turbo than the regular 3600. Not worth it

    • +1

you gotta look at those results with a grain of salt.
ALot of the CPU chips that are listed top aren't what you expect (for me at least).

    • +4

dont bother with userbenchmark site, they are basically a running joke in the review and benchmark industry at the moment. Although the figure of 3% is about right … this chip is for OC enthusiasts as it gives them a guaranteed good silicon to work with … that's about the only use case for it :)

      • I found their results pretty accurate when comparing GPU FPS to the results I got on my PC and the results people posted on YouTube. I think just people out there not seeing what they want to see.

        • +2

i think its their miss information when they actually blatantly write wrong stuff about a brand, typically AMD when its vs intel, they have snippets out there mentioning i3 9100 as a better gaming cpu than a top end AMD cpu's … so take what they are doing with a grain of salt and cross check… i've found for benchmarks and reviews from Hardware unboxed (aussies) , gamer nexus and a few others to be a lot more informative and less bias .. actually HU have a fair few videos sighting some of the things that has been written by unserbenchmark site… pretty outrageous stuff (yet highly amusing lol)

      • +2

in this particular case that site aint wrong

  • +3

Drop $60-70 more and get a 3700x or Regular 3600.

    • Yes 3700x is the one to get, and it's fast enough I think for many. unless the new cpu has new features, probably don't need 4000 series. the 8 fast cores of 3700x work great. the 4800x will be faster but also more expensive

      • defintely either 3600 or 3700x right now. Only reason i got 3800x was because it was cheaper than a regular 3700x =D

  • I was wondering why I hadn't been hearing much about the XT chips since they launched… I guess this is why.

    • +2

      3600 or 3900 is where it's at.

3900 if doing heavy non gaming tasks, 3600 anything else.

3300x was good too but hard to find and 3600 is just worth it.

The AMD line up is getting filled with useless options. Such is not having competition anymore.

      • It's going to be interesting to see how 6C/12T CPU's stand the test of time. For example old i5's got outdated faster than i7's due to the lack of HT; even though the HT wasn't very useful for the masses at the time.

        • +1

True, 8 could be useful, but right now this pt, I'd go 6 (and I did).

          Actually downgraded from a 9900k.

        • most games don't benefit much from 8 cores, not even graphic-intensive ones like Gears 5 or RDR2

  • Spend a extra $67 and get a 3700x off Amazon…

  • $100 more for 100 mhz? lol
