Ok saving on the UAP, wish I could pick up another 2x @ $210 again.

  • Hi Mr Hole! Is it possible to get a deal on TP-Link TL-PA9020P KIT? I'm looking to buy two kits.

    • +1

Hi..Don't know.. I can send request to their staff and if we get lucky then will make another post :)

      • Cheers :)

What is this used for? (genuine question)

    • +1

      For your wireless network.

      • what difference is it to a wireless modem you get from say TPG or Belong? does it emit wireless a bit better than the standard router?

        • Yes but it's not a simply plug and play, they need to be configured with a controller

          • +2

@DoesntEvenMatter: The UDM however is the controller in it's case.

Also you can't detach the UDM from it's own controller. Problematic if you already have your own controller on the network, as you'll have to migrate them all over to the UDM's controller.

        • +1

Useful for big houses or lots of local network traffic. For my household of 3 my cheap $59 750Mbps router does the job (100Mbit WAN and LAN ports, so it won't support gigabit or 250Mbit connections) , mind you this is a medium sized apartment and at most 2 of us are doing anything bandwidth heavy. For bigger houses with more people this can be useful.

          • @Void: especially double brick which is reasonably common in Australia

        • They are a wireless access point only, you still need to use a modern and connect these via ethernet. You then turn the wireless off in your modem

  • +5

Any deal on the udm pro ?

    • bump!

  • Should I buy the Dream Machine (or two, for a mesh network) or the Amplifi Alien?
Edit: I have a gigabit connection. It looks like the DM tops out at 850Mbps.

    • +5

You wouldn't buy two dream machines - you would get a dream machine and an access point (AC-Pro NanoHD etc).

I think the UDM Pro works for gig connections.

    • +3

UDM does around 850 Mbps with QoS, IDS and IPS enabled and the UDM can do around 950 Mbps depending on which of those settings you have on or off. UDM is wifi 5 and has the whole UniFi operating system. With this you can use the basic settings or deep dive into networking. If you can't wait purchase a UDM.

Alien is wifi 6 and about the most you can do with AmpliFi products is port forward, DHCP server and set static IPs. It's good for those who don't want to play with much settings. If you can wait a few months the Alien might show up in Oz and yep you need minimum two Aliens for a mesh network.

      • Are there any better Ubiquiti devices or systems that will get me closer to that 1Gbps?

        • You're not going to get much closer to 1Gbps no matter what router you choose.

          • @Twix: The Alien is supposedly rated for 1.3Gbps. I don't know which settings are used to achieve those speeds, though. I'm using ethernet on the devices I seek to reach the highest speeds with the lowest latency.

            • @Broos: Alien and NBN NTD is limited to 1G. To reach speed over 1G the NBN need to upgrade the NTD, release faster speed options and you must have a router with 2.5G WAN port. You're doing the best you can by using ethernet.

        • +2

Important to remember that it does 850 with IPS enabled. With IDS, you’d get better throughput. And indeed the full gigabit if you have neither. In any case, with a gigabit connection QoS would turned off by default (if you need to restrict bandwidth, you could always use vlan to classify your network devices).

  • I'm getting $129 for the Ac-Lite, not $120.

    • yeah. its $129 .. typo and fixed

    • I am getting $129 too

  • I'm very tempted but my google wifi (not Nest) x 3 are living strong.

  • I have an AC68U running upstairs with a data port available to my downstairs ceiling - which of these should I consider?

The devices downstairs can reach the upstairs router without problems for the most part on the 2.4Ghz, but I'd like to use the 5Ghz channels if possible.

Probably be used for things like the TV, Shield, Nintendo Switch, PS4, etc - think it boils down to whether the LITE or LR version is the one to buy in my situation

    • depends on the size of the house. I use a ac68u with an ac pro, but I live on a farm.

I think for a few devices the ac lite would be fine. I would be inclined to get the pro just because I know the number of devices I have will grow and I want headroom. I also think the pro has better range, up there with the ac lr. I don't think the LR has better 5ghz range, only 2.4ghz range, but I haven't checked recently.

Mind you, I have switched off my wireless on the ac68u as I have multiple unifi AP's and moving between them is fine. Not sure how they go moving between the ac68u and unifi ap when roaming.

    • Just get another asus thingy and crank Aimesh?

      • Not sure how Unifi manage their APs. I have Aimesh set up and it's disappointing. The node acts more like an extender. I have them connected via ethernet back haul. So at any given time there are 4 APs (2 5ghz and 2 2.4ghz) the controller doesn't optimise the connection quickly enough so there's always a few seconds of "which AP should I connect to"

        • Enable smart connect if you want 1 SSID.

Is roaming assistant enabled or disabled? Is the RSSI set to -70dBm?

          • @Twix: Smart connect is on. There is stil 4 broadcasting stations with varying level of overlaps.

Is that RSSI value for the 5ghz band?
Have you got a good smart connect config going?

  • +1

Thank you. Ordered 1 AP AC LR.
When can I expect it to get delivered?

    • There's no rep here, what did your order say

    • No Problem.. I have no idea about delivery but I guess details may be available in order.

  • These are great gear. I just fitted out our factory with 4 long range ones in 4 different sheds all steel and concrete and I've pretty much covered the whole half acre in wifi now.
FYI: You need cabling, they are not an extender but access points.

    • +3

If you're running multiple AP's, at least 1 needs to be cabled the others can be meshed (range permitting).

      • Did not know this. Wouldn't work for me anyway because of the interference of structure. Signal would be too low.

  • At that price, we should be looking at an 802.11ax device like the Asus RT-AX86U which is also going to be supported by Merlin WRT soon and also has a 2.5G ethernet port. Its around $450 currently, lesser with ebay coupons and Gift cards. Nobody should buy a 1G ethernet wan in 2020, 2.5G Fibre connections are coming end of next year (already live in NZ and many other countries)

    https://www.devicedeal.com.au/asus-rt-ax86u-ax5700-dual-band…

    • +4

Those of us stuck on FTTN can barely justify 1G let alone 2.5G. And that's not changing anytime soon.

    • Where has NBN said anything about 2.5G FTTP?

That requires a brand new NTD design.

      • The current G.PON tech used for FTTp is already capable of 2.5Gbps speeds but would need an ONT swap with 2.5 Gbps ports

        • Yep but will NBN bother upgrading FTTP in the short term or focus on other parts of the network that need an upgrade before FTTP users?

          • @Twix: They're not going to be upgrading anyone, <FTTP or otherwise. That's why they have the Technology 'Choice' program. So that end users can shell out to upgrade the network to what it should have been from the start.

            • @Osprey06: NBN have to upgrade any connections that don't meet SOE.

              • +1

@Twix: Or they'll just dump you to satellite and walk away!

                • @DialIN: 3000 lucky FTTN homes got upgraded to FTTP last year :-)

    • Asus stuff will never compare to ubiquiti

  • Can I use a unifi AP with my existing router? Been looking at getting a USG as well but doesn't seem like ones on sale here

    • Yep you can do that.

    • Did this in my old office. Made a big difference, and one AP was enough for roughly 35 devices at a time over a 200m2 office area.

  • +1

Hmm, I get the feeling no one wants to put the nano hd on sale

  • Can anyone please help me out? I am having issue connecting more than 40 devices on my Optus modem - currently just kicking devices off (think it max out at 16 after researching more into it).

What would you recommend for 40-50 devices (mainly wireless) in a small-medium home? I was looking into the asus rt-ax86u but read somewhere that it holds “up to 35 devices” if u connect the asus to optus modem - but unsure if u can link up to 45-50

Asked a friend about the ubiquiti, they said it may or may not fix the issue. Anyone experience the same issue and found a solution?

    • +3

My unifi ac pro v2 supports over 200 devices.

These are prosumer - enterprise grade access points. Have a look at the product specs. They will support more than 50 devices easily and at times simultaneously due the 3x3 MIMO antennas.

    • +4

I have about 23 - 25 devices on my network and my Telstra provided box was beginning to flake out. My past experience with flagship netgear nighthawk has shown similar behavior when we approached 25+ devices. This is where ubiquity really shines, udm is rated for 200 devices, and it can extend by adding more access points. Got my udm just before the pandemic and it’s been rock solid in terms of performance.
Since both me and wife are working from home, which
      1. Increases our footprint to the internet (additional vectors for attack)
      2. Puts a lot of demand on wifi. And udm has really worked well in those aspects, especially with Intrusion Protection Services (IPS).
      3. Things like Remote Desktop, Skype calls and CS:Go sessions had significantly better ping times (though I switched from Telstra to superloop around the same time, not sure if its just the router or the connection, or Both)
      It’s not all positives though,
      1. UI is quite extensive , which can be confusing for someone who isn’t very well versed with network gear.
      2. The router takes close to a minute to start.
So, honestly for a home user with less than 20 or so devices, something like asus router will be sufficient. But for someone who needs a lot of devices on the network with consistent speeds and ability to control much more stuff (and additional protection on the network) something like udm is a good investment.
For those wondering what the udm UI looks like, this is the demo dashboard ubiquity has hosted on their site : https://demo.ui.com/manage/site/default/dashboard

Whilst I'm a huge fan of Ubiquiti gear, for your purpose it's overkill. Easiest thing for you would be to put the Optus device in bridge mode and run a 2 or 3 node mesh setup with either the Tenda Nova MW3 or MW6. I'm running the MW3's (3 node mesh) in a large double block 2-story property and run over 50 wifi devices (I have a lot of smart devices; lights, cameras, smart-plugs, sensors, etc). The MW3's have not missed a beat. Never needs rebooting. And you can often find the 3 node kit for under $100.

      • Oh awesome, might look into that! yeah - all my devices mainly lights, cams, google home, chromecast etc.

    • +1

Just get the Tplink M5 Mesh Wifi, much cheaper compared to this.

  • Any one upgraded from the 3p USG to the UDM?

    • +1

Read up on the Ubiquiti forums first, UDM can't yet do a lot that a USG can do and a lot of things I assumed it would be able to do.

  • +2

Whenever I see this, I think oh this is going to help me sleep better. Alas it does not. :(

    • +1

If you're a network tech like myself and dream of minimal packet loss, low latency networks… This could in fact help.

  • The Ubiquiti USG is cheaper on their ebay store $ 179

  • Any code for the UDM Pro?

  • +1

I want the dream but not without wifi6

    • My plan is to buy a wifi6 AP when they are available and cheap. I have no need for wifi 6 right now, and this gives me a good upgrade path for when I do

  • How does ubuiqty compare to orbit rbk50 or Google best wifi?

  • Its good product, I recently purchased a UDM a few months ago. Only thing is I am having issues with my Nvidia Shield TV pro connecting to it on the 5g wifi. It connects but there is limited connectivity. Both units are about 8 feet apart. Tried a higher channel on the 5g wifi but no luck, it only works on the 2.4ghz wifi. All other devices have no issues connecting on the 5g wifi. 😡

    • I swapped modems to my synology router and the 5g is working fine with the Nvidia Shield. Just a warning to anyone who is thinking of buying the UDM and has a Nvidia Shield TV Pro. There is an issue.

Has anybody's shipped yet? I ordered a UDM on Saturday, but my order status is still stuck on "payment verified". I thought they would dispatch on Monday based on their "same day dispatch" policy - as Saturday is before 2pm Monday.

    • Just came looking to see if anyone else had this problem.
I ordered late on Sunday night, assuming dispatch Monday. Still says "Payment verified".
Their shipping policy says same day dispatch. Their FAQ says 1-2 days dispatch. I tried to ring their customer service line today around lunch time and got sent to voice mail, so I sent them an email to which I've yet to get a response. I just wanted to know if it was something on my end which needed to move the order along.

Not thrilled with them. I don't even mind things taking a few days, but just don't have a same day dispatch policy then. Answering your phone when a customer calls or at the very least responding to customer enquiry emails promptly is a no brainer.

Won't be rushing back to them.

    • My AC Lite ordered on Saturday is also on payment verified. However mine was already on backorder at order time (in stock at supplier)

      • Hmm.. good point, the UDM now says "in stock at supplier". I had thought it was "in stock" when I bought though.

        • +1

Said "In stock" an hour ago

    • Ordered LR on Saturday and posted out yesterday.

    • Ordered a UDM on the 27th July when it was "In Stock At Supplier" - so before this deal even existed and it's STILL on Payment Verified.

Emailed them on the 2nd August for an update to be told that delivery of stock was "next week".

Still "Payment Verified" and waiting :(

    • I just received email that it has been dispatched this morning.

      • Mine still said "payment verified" yesterday, but this morning it switched to "Complete". Tracking shows that it was shipped from Sydney last night and arrived in Brisbane, then Redbank (Ipswich) this morning. Unfortunately, it's being delivered to Logan (which has a public holiday today), so I might not get it until next Monday :( - unless the delivery drivers are based at Redbank/Ipswich which doesn't have a public holiday.

        • Well I'll be, it got delivered! There's my long weekend gone haha

    • +1

I placed my order for a UDM on Saturday 8th August, got a shipping dispatch email yesterday morning, and it just arrived to WA today. Only thing is it looks like it's been opened already. The box came in a startrack satchel, the Quality Control tape around the box has been cut, and opening it up it looks like the power cable was just stuffed into the bottom half of the box. Just confirming if anyone else's UDM has a black figure 8 power cable?

      • +1

Mine arrived today and one of the quality control stickers was broken, but the other ok. The unbroken sticker wasn't holding the two parts of the box together very tightly, so I think it was just the movement during shipping the caused it to break.
I also received a black power cable.

      • +1

Same here - one of the stickers was broken but the other was still there. There was a black figure 8 cable supplied. I suspect they broke the seal to provide the AU figure 8 cable?

  • Got my order for the AP Pro V2 delivered today however does not say V2 anywhere on the box. Anyone else got the same thing?

    • Just called Wireless1. They said it doesn't say anywhere on the box or device that it's version 2 - the only difference is a white box for V1 and brown box for V2. But I did find this. So I opened it up to check the innards and sure enough - USB port.

      • AP Pro I ordered from December 2017 already has USB port. The product description at that time was Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-AC-PRO AP AC PRO 802.11ac Dual Radio Access Point

        • Ok - guess I'll just have to take the word of lady at Wireless1 that it's the right version. Thanks

  • Any deals for the UAP FlexHD or UAP-IW-HD?
