Not a bad price considering I scored mine for around that price a couple yrs ago on Boxing Day.
      Thank you ozbargain

    • -1

which is exactly why the promo is running now, to encourage people to do it early instead of a million people wanting to trade in in November, they'll have more stock than they need of pre-owned PS4s

      • +4

Actually they are doing it now because the demand for second hand units is very high now due to Covid.

        • -1

it is no coincidence they do this right before every single console launch. as an ex employee i can tell you how pointless it feels to have 1000 PS4s turn up for trade-in in the same week everyone is buying PS5s

          • @[Deactivated]: It's supply and demand.

At launch of the PS5, the price they will pay for used PS4s will be low because everyone wants to sell the PS4 and buy the PS5.

This has nothing to do with them encouraging everyone to get in early, or to avoid having 'pointless' amounts of PS4s later on.

Appreciate you have worked there, but the decision behind the pricing is purely economic.

  • +7

Might be a good time to get rid of my jet engine pro, didn't pay much more than $350 for it in the first place.

    • A good clean and new thermal paste should do the trick.

  • +3

    PS4 Pro 1TB $350

Bit rough given they are selling refurb pros for $489

Surely you're better off selling it on scumtree for cash than in-store credit.

    • +29

You'll always get more money selling privately but sometimes it's not worth dealing with people. Even more so in today's environment.

    • +10

Seems like a fair price to me. They need to profit off the sales and probably add a bit of a buffer for price drops as they might struggle to keep the $489 going once the PS5 preorders open. They take up storage space until sold etc.

EBay and Gumtree are almost always better options in terms of maximising money, but you have to do a bit of leg work with eBay or deal with people on gumtree who aren’t reliable and have all sorts of unreasonable requests.

    • crazy, brand new was that much or less

      $550 I bought 3 years ago with 2 games

    • +3

How do you expect companies to make money? Think about the overhead. They’re not a charity.

From the staff that is paid to take it off your hands. They then have to be shipped to head office for cleaning. Some might fail and they become essentially a write off. Then they pay someone to check the consoles and send them back. Never mind that the new consoles are just around the corner which will push prices down on these.

      • +1

I think my main point is that if they can sell it back to consumers for nearly $500, why couldn't you cut out the middle man and do it yourself.

As others mentioned, it's about simplifying it and not dealing with tire kickers. But I'd be happy to get screwed around for an extra $150. If your spare time is worth $30/h, then if you spend more than 5 hours screwing around trying to offload it, then you're at a loss. If you get lucky and someone actually purchases it quickly and doesn't screw you around, you're ahead.

        • +2

Sold my pro for 560 with 4 cheap games a month ago on Gumtree. Consoles are in short supply so 350 is not a fair price in this market.

        • Yeah, you’re totally right. Private is a much better way to make extra cash on it, assuming you want to take the risks associated with it.

In terms of ease, this is a very fair price. Especially given how badly some people treat their consoles and the myriad of problems they have. Like broken disc drives they never check for.

          • @cnut: I assume that's why EB say "Up to $350". If you bring in a console covered in god knows what and the optical drive doesn't work, then you'll likely get $200 or something.

I guess it all comes down to how much effort people are willing to go to to make money.

            • @SnowDragon: I think hey mean up to based on the model. They never care about the quality of the parts from memory and don’t check stuff like drives. Just whether it boots.

They also seem to indicate a bonus 20% for EB World. Which would make them $420. Not bad.

            • @SnowDragon: Actually unless they've changed in the last few years EB doesn't knock money off the trade-in unless something is missing, i.e. controller, cable.

If something actually doesn't work you'll have to trade it as "broken" (like 30% of the value).

    • +1

      Bit rough

Not really. Most places, like cash convertors would only offer you ~1/3 of their selling price. Theres no free lunch, you want more money, sell it yourself.

  • damn thats a nice price. if only i’d finished off my pile of shame :-/

  • Mmm. Paid $50 for an Xbox with faulty disc drive. Pulled it apart and the disc drive magically started working.
Might be time to cash in.

  • +1

Now, to find a cheap Xbox One S to replace it.

  • Anyone know how to do this in Vic? Keen to trade in my PS4 Pro.

    • Same with XOneS for the XSeriesS

    • Why not call up Dandrews?

      • +1

I doubt he'd give you any more than the $350 that EB are offering.

        • Only if you stay home after testing positive.

  • Wouldn’t they have better trade in deals for the new consoles.

    • +3

Maybe it’s a ploy to get people to trade their consoles now, and when they next gen drops they’ll be missing the old one and be more willing to pay whatever full price the new ones are. I personally plan to hang onto my XB1 until the second version comes out, I’ve been burnt buying a new gen on launch day which is not quite fully baked.

      • +1

Assume the tactic is to snap up imminent pre orders

      • +2

it's to raise their pre-owned stocks now rather than all at once in 3 months.

    • I don’t recall there being anything particularly great last gen from EB.

  • +3

    Xbox One S 1TB$230
I paid $ 199 on the amazon prime day. it will be nice if I just sell this blueray player. I mainly play on ps4 pro.

    • Not bad. I sold my $199 Minecraft Edition used for $350 2 months ago….think I did alright.

  • I've got the OG Xbox.
What does the most basic PS4 go for nowdays? Keen to play Spider-man.

    • +1

      Are you trolling?

  • does anyone know if they check the disk drives? mine is a tad funky, still works but after reinserting a disk a few times.

    • -1

      Never in my experience.

    • Traded my OG PS4 in last year for a pro, they didn't even check that it turned on let alone if the disc drive worked lol.

      • Thanks all. Hard to part ways with my PS but I think it's time

    • +1

No they won't turn it on. If they ask I'd imagine you are obliged to truthfully let them know what state the machine is in though, just as a store can't knowingly sell you defective goods without letting you know. Lying would also be an incredibly poor thing to do knowing someone else will be buying the system down the line, and based on what you've said the issues intermittent so even if EB tests it post trade, they might not immediately hit the issue.

    • -4

I traded in my og ps4 because of the disc eject issue.
I had broken the seal to take it apart and do the gold plate scratch fix which didn't last - they just turned it to test power and there were good

They can't exactly punish you for their design flaws

      • +1

They can't exactly punish you for their design flaws

…it’s not like EB designed the console

        • -2

          I was referring to Sony

Why would eb have anything to do with the hardware?

          • @iamhurtin: If you're not sending it to Sony for repair under ACL, then it's someone other than Sony that is being punished.

            • -1

@justtoreply: So it's my fault the original ps4 has a defect?

I tried fixing it, when it wasn't going to work, I traded it and 2 games + 300 dollars and got a pro.

Sony would of fixed the issue straight away.

I spent 900 dollars on ps4 and I'm the bad guy?

Christ there is some idiots on this site

              • @iamhurtin: It's your fault that it's now someone elses problem.

If Sony "would have fixed it straight away" you should have done that then traded it in. OR you should have straight up told EB about it during trade in so they could do it.

Instead, someone got a dud, and as a minimum you wasted their time. More likely it didn't get fixed and they or EB are out of pocket for an issue that's between YOU and SONY.

Tell yourself what you need to so you can sleep at night.

                • @justtoreply: But heaps of people had the disc eject issue?

And I had to give my id when I traded in and I think it's a verbal guarantee that it's not stolen or broken.

Wouldn't they have contacted me if there was a problem?

Isn't it similar to the loud fan problems people have. My pro is now loud as but it was posted here it's fine.
I could make more selling ps4 pro myself but I wouldn't want someone getting that noise.

So, what exactly is your problem with me?

  • Damn I actually want to trade my One S towards a Series S, but I live in Melbourne.

    • -2

May be interested buying if ur in nearby suburb :)

  • +1

I'm keen on trading in my XBox One X and PS4 Pro, not sure if I should do that now… hmmm. I only want a PS5 of the next generation.

  • Am I better off cashing in my one s 500gb with this deal or waiting on a trade in deal for series X?

    • +2

As someone who ordered both a PS4 day one and a Switch day one, there was no trade in deals at launch for either regarding either a PS3 or Wii U. Down the line I think there was a deal knocking off a hundred or so if you traded a N3DSXL but otherwise nothing.

So since "trade your old box for the new box" deals have seemingly been dead since the PSP and DS Lite revisions with EB, I'd say if you're trading anyway (rather than risking Gummie), this is probably the one to jump on.

      • I'm thinking that same way - hence why this is kinda the best time to trad..

but they did trade in for pro /Xbx, and the eb staff member I spoke to, really hinted there would be another deal after this one - he even used the word "incentive" in relation to get people to upgrade to a new gen

I'm basically even more confused haha

I know that this might be better because usually they require games when trading towards new.

        Ps2 to xbox 360 deal
        Ps4 to pro

Might be you lose money on the games even if you seemingly gain on the console

  • +1

Want to trade but still have PS+ subscription and big backlog of games V_V

  • Will they offer this deal again in the future, $350 for a rare Xbox one X beast

  • im in vic and never got this email, level 4 too, so whats going on?

    • Probably because your preferred store (set in your profile) is in metro Melbourne/ Mitchell Shire, where the stores are closed there.

I’d imagine those living outside the lockdown areas would have received the email.

      • Mitchel Shire is only under Stage 3 lockdown.

        • +1

Oh, my bad. It’d just be metro Melbourne then.

  • -2

"NOT TO BE COMBINED WITH ANY OTHER OFFER EXCEPT EB WORLD."

Does that mean it stacks with the 10% trade bonus for being a tier 2 member??

    • +3

      sure does!

      Level 2: 10%
      Level 3: 15%
      Level 4: 20%

      • What about the “get up to” wording on the console prices?

        • That wording is included to cover the company if people bring in a console without a controller, cable etc.

      • When I traded in my WiiU they said my Level 4 bonus didn't count towards the console

        • when you trade in
they only give you store credit?

is that a good deal though since you can only buy from ebgames with that credit..

so if the next gen console sells cheaper elsewhere
you can only buy from ebgames

also how long does the credit last?

          • @pinkybrain: If I don't pickup something or pre-order they just give it to me as a gift card. I'm not sure the rules with gift cards but I would kick up a fuss if they told me I didn't use it quick enough.

As for converting your trade to store credit, it basically gets locked in to the store and can never not be used at that store, EB Games honours price matches, except when a game has a store exclusive variant.

With the birthday bonus credit and my level 4 card bringing game trades to a once per year +70%, I literally only trade everything once a year.

          • @pinkybrain: You can trade for EB gift cards (ie store credit). According to the info on their website, they don't expire.

            https://www.ebgames.com.au/product/gift-cards/259064-20-eb-g…

          • @pinkybrain: I don't like to buy games from eb, so when I did trade ins using my friends level 4 - I'd ask for psn credit.
Then I could keep money till games became cheap on psn

  • Wondering if we should trade in now for the next generation consoles :|

    • this is exactly why this promo is being run

    • How much are you playing your console atm?

I'm hardly playing at all and when I do consider playing something from the backlog, I think I might as well wait and see if it runs better on the PS5

      You thinking the same?

      • Just a bit, not too much due to classes and etc. TBH.

What are your thoughts? What would you do?

        • Well,
I'd only trade in if I sufficient entertainment options or if the extra money earned potential was too high to resist

PS5 is 3 months away - most likely
There could also be limited amounts, and if it sells out, from what I've heard from ps4 launch, there was no new ones till Jan/feb

So would you be ok with no playstation till Nov earliest or Feb latest? With covid around, who knows what lock downs could come back in.

I'm borrowing a friend's old ps4 he doesn't own - it has a low firmware version, so I can trade away!

          • @iamhurtin: I think I'd consider it.

            I'm playing on XB1.

My roommates both have the OG XB1. I also have other things I can do/play until then. I have an iPad Pro w/ some games I can play and a N3DS to kill some time.

I'd be in classes and placements (pratical) until December 4.

The only question then is do I attempt to sell the console privately or trade it in via EB :|

  • Any clarification on the "get up to"?

I have a ps4 slim sitting around doing nothing, don't know what I'd use the trade in dollars for but I'd find something.

    • $420 trade with level 4 for my XBOX One X Project Scorpio a good deal for this limited edtion console?

    • If you are missing power cables, dont include a controller or from memory a HDMI cable, they'll reduce the amount. Assume its that.

For what its worth, the penalty for not including controllers in the past hasn't been overly bad. From memory its something like $20. If you are trading in say an Xbox and want to get a Series X down the line, check what the penalty is for holding onto the controller as you might be better off keeping it and using it as an extra one for your next console given Series X will support One accessories. Especially for the Xbox the, current controllers should work very well. Less so for the PS as only backwards compatible titles will support the older PS4 controllers.

      • Nah, the penalty for not having a controller is off-putting. I'd check for you but not on today. On memory was nearly $50.

        • If it's that high I wouldn't bother. Fairly sure years gone by, and I'm talking 5+, there were some promos where many opted to keep the controller as the figure wasn't that bad. May well have changed which is fair enough.

        • What's the penalty for the hdmi cable?

I'm hesitant to go through all my cables all tucked away - could I. Buy a different hdmi cable and trade it in with the console?

          Thanks

          • +1

@iamhurtin: $10-$15 for the various cables as a penalty. Yes you can supply a different HDMI, does not have to be original

  • or if it just goes by your EB World level

Any chance to get the minimum amount? Do we assume the quoted max values are for Level 5?

    • Those prices are the minimum amounts provided the console is in working order and with all peripherals. EBW stacks on top of these prices.

      • Mr associate, I'm hardly playing my one year old pro and would like to trade in - but last night I noticed how loud the fan has become, will that stop the trade in?

        • That's always been a issue with pro lol it's like a jet is taking off 😂

          • +1

@agalea101: I got the "newer" model in 2018 and it was really quite for ages.

            Paste and dust I guess

They're not using artic silver I guess
I've got a pc I built in 2007 and it's still whisper quite when I run crysis (yes it can run it)

            • +1

@iamhurtin: Oh ok maybe paste has been a issue but I think I got mine when It first came out. Always freaked me out that it was going to blow up haha

              Nice!

              • @agalea101: Ah yeah I read about that.

I'm kinda just going to pretend buying at launch is fine and enjoy my PS5 - maybe that's why Sony is making a big deal about the new audio system and using headphones - you won't notice the console fans then haha

        • +2

nah you're fine! :) we had a day where we traded in 10 Pro consoles or something like that, at the end of the day we powered them all up and the noise was something to behold! haha

  • +2

Half keen on doing this for my older Xbox just sitting around doing nothing but last time I traded they informed me to the fact I had to spend the money on something that day and couldn’t keep it as store credit here in Perth.

    • That was my concern. As a level 4, I might get $420 but Id only want to bank it while I wait for the ps5. If I cant leave it just hanging on my account, Id just wait.

      • Yeh if I could put it straight into a preorder for the next consoles I would but I don’t think they let you put money on them yet. Last time I ended up preordering 3 games that had kept getting delayed and then just spent the money on something else eventually

        • that's what I've done with my PS5 preorder! split $750 across numerous preorders haha

        • +2

I just traded my PS4 Pro and they gave it to me on a gift card. Easier than juggling pre orders.

  • Can anyone speculate on what the trade in deals might be for an Xbox one S trading up to a Xbox series next when they get released?

Based on past history, would you think it's better to wait? Trade now? Or sell now?

I haven't been playing much so don't mind being without a console for a few months.
