This got to be one of the most informative post here on Ozb. Well done.

    • +3

      Thanks, appreciate it 👍

      • I like how you told us what you've tried and the results. Saved me the time and effort.

        +1, quality post.

    60hz?

    • +9

      IPS QHD 2560 x 1440 at 60 Hz

        • +2

You haven't lived until you've used excel in 360hz.

      • -4

        Eww 60hz.. Not worth $10

  • +3

Vesa HDR means it has Vesa's standard for HDR nothing to do with the Vesa mount standard which Vesa also created.

    • +16

I know but they mention that exact phrase in the description so could be confusing to some.

  • +2

I've had this monitor for 18 months and love it. I use it for work for the refresh rate isn't an issue but I would like a slightly bigger version and 4k but you won't get that for this price. This is the best work monitor you'll get for work in this price range and the reviews back that up.

  • It's not a "gaming" monitor but it can still be used to play games up to 60fps and will look amazing. Perfect for AAA games. People who like high refresh rate shooters would give this one a miss.

    • -4

Naturally.. Anything under 144hz is trash tier for a gamer.. Especially at that price.. Amazon have decent 1440p 144hz for $550 with prime.. Peraonally i hate 1440p so will be going a 144 1080 27inch for $300 next week.. All i need

  • Quad HD (2560x1440) vs 4K for work purposes?

    • +1

I recently bought a 28" 4k Acer monitor for work and it is beautiful. Excellent colours and even has HDR if you want to casually game (60Hz). Best part was the price at sub 500.

      • +1

Are you having to use scaling though?

        • Nope no scaling - use it on native 4k resolution. I think it depends on the distance level too, I sit about 3 feet away from the monitor so it's good enough for me.

      • Thing is, technically, HDR400 isn't real HDR. That Acer monitor is at best HDR300 (I know, there is no such HDR standard) - so essentially, in today's standard, it doesn't reach minimum HDR VESA standard. To be fair, I suspect some IPS monitors claiming HDR400 is achieved through some firmware trick as well as the same exact panel was quoted 350 brightness level back in 2019. Also, 27/28 inch is too small to properly enjoy 4K.

At least HDR600 is considered a proper HDR. Don't get me wrong, the Acer monitor is 4K and at least it allows HDR input to it. At that price, it is a good choice for people on a budget but has 4K input source and want HDR enabled (even if it mostly a firmware trick).

It is weird that Dell put an HDR600 IPS panel in this monitor, but cut corners elsewhere (no VESA mount support and only 45W USB-PD). Also, due to the including of USB-C, the USB upstream is also through there. The 1440p in this case turns out to be somewhat good as it doesn't chew up so much bandwidth meaning the USB 3 ports can have enough bandwidth still (though probably USB 3.0/3.1 gen 1).

      • I bought the same Acer monitor and loved it for work use. The colours seems well calibrated and for me the ideal scaling was 150% on windows 10 which made the effective resolution QHD like. The fonts looked really smooth and good to read. I think getting a 4K and using it at QHD (using the 150% scaling) give you more pixel density rather than getting a native QHD and using the native resolution. I haven't had too many issues with certain app not scaling properly so far.

Unfortunately, 1 almost 2 weeks in it went faulty and even though the monitor would power up (panel backlight coming on, power light coming on), it looked like there was no video information going to the panel (even Acer logo not appearing on the screen at start up). So I returned the Acer back to Officeworks and got another monitor.

        • Sorry to hear that - which monitor did you get as a replacement?

          • @itslittfam: I bought the Lenovo L28u-30 which was about $100 cheaper than the Acer at the time. I was happy to trade the extra HDMI port, built-in speakers and better stand for the $100 saving.

            • @Knight2000: That's fair enough. I was lucky to have a $500 budget from my employer which I could get reimbursed for - otherwise would've gone for the Lenovo also.

    • +2

Had 4k, went back to quad HD. Scaling is still annoying

      • +1

I agree, currently on a 4k 28" monitor - scaling pretty much makes it QHD for most applications. For 4k, I reckon 32" is the minimum to make use of the resolution for most people.

Looking at moving to dual 27" * QHD instead, maybe sometime next year.

  • +2

Any suggestions on Lenovo 4K in link below?

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-28-…

    • Wow. That’s cheap. Hopefully not 250 nits though

    • +5

@Baazi Ordered it from Lenovo education store for $412 two days ago. Will let you know once I receive it. In the mean time see some reviews here

Brightness is okay at 300 cd/㎡

This dell looks expensive. $627 and still not 4K.

      • +3

4k really isn't ideal for 27" or 28". You end up having to use scaling in windows. 32" is the minimum for 4k to not use any scaling

        • Well, its personal preference, but if those 4K pixels are not required then a 2K resolution AOC at 27" is even cheaper at $340 or this Viewsonic for $369.

Also, scaling may not be required when watching videos or playing games. For work purposes you can scale upto 150%, when watching movies or playing games, turn off scaling and enjoy content at 4K resolution. It always good to have a 4K option just in case.

          • +5

@paul11: The main selling point for this Dell monitor is HDR600, which is uncommon for consumer grade IPS HDR monitors. Then, there is the USB-C port support (though 45W USB-PD isn't ideal).

4K monitors on 27/28 inch, on Windows 10, you will pretty much have to use display resolution scaling. The display scaling feature on Windows 10 still isn't perfect, especially on older apps. Changing the display scaling regularly get annoying.

While I do use 4K (with scaling) for general usage. For doing serious work, I would use my 1440p monitor. Messing around with display scaling on a regular basis just isn't worth the trouble.

    • I bought this Lenovo after the Acer 28" CB282K died on me after almost 2 weeks and I'm very happy with it. it was $100 cheaper than the Acer (I didn't mind losing the 2nd HDMI port, in-built speakers and more adjustable stand that the Acer offered).

It seems like they use the same IPS panel between this and the Acer CB282K.

The people buying these for WFH, is your company reimbursing you for the cost? Otherwise, that's a fair amount of coins to spend on a monitor

    • -1

      Tax deductible

      • Still means you are paying most of it with your own money

      • -2

All new monitors are tax deductible…

        • +5

I get the feeling that people assume tax-deductible means it's free when it's far from the truth

    • +1

My company is letting me salary sacrifice it, so that helps bring the cost down a bit. Personally, having a good screen when you're doing 8 hours+ of work staring at it, I think is a good investment on your well-being and productivity.

  • This looks stunning although I've been looking for a cheaper USB c monitor since I don't game or do any design work but struggling to find any on sale

Anyone else have any other recommendations?

    • The Lenovo I posted a few weeks ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/556510

Being almost $200 less, I'm not sure why this one didn't get as much traction as this one. Sure the Dell design in much nicer, but with USB-C charging, is it $200 or 50% better?

      • This actually looks like a great deal! Would be tempted to pull the trigger but pity it's out of stock now…

      • perhaps you didn't put the resolution of 1440p in the description, people don't really bother clicking further to read the spec from the website, unless they are serious

      • HDR600 means it can reach 600 nits, which is very very bright. The Lenovo ‘only’ gets 350 nits.

  • This one is better spec’d than Lenovo 4k, I guess. Any experience with AOC brand?

Thanks. It's time to move to standard USB-C.
Please use standard AU/international date format (no need for: th,) - 20 August 2020 (I guess copy/paste. I shorten that to 20 Aug'20)

    • +2

In what country is 20 Aug’20 a standard date format? Brevity shouldn’t take place of readability.

  • +1

I might be an idiot but I found that this only charged at 45w so does this mean it wouldn't charge a mac book pro because it uses a 60w charger?

I ended up negotiating a deal for the U2721DE through live chat for $640. From my research i can see the monitor above isn't height adjustable, can't pivot into portrait mode, has less ports (no hdmi 3.1 or display ports or ethernet) but in return you gain HDR and appears to be slightly brighter.

Which do we think is the better monitor?

    • +1

The 45w charging will mean your Laptop slowly drains and during heavy tasks it will drain faster. You would probably need to run a heavy application (e.g. Gaming) for 3-8hrs for the MacBook battery to die.

    • +1

The lack of height adjustment is a bit of a problem.

      • I think if you've got a mounting adaptor as listed above and don't need the connectivity listed above the OP's post appears to be a better monitor. However the ergnomics and connectivity is important to me so i'm sticking with the U2721DE. To get the price of $640 i just showed them the expired post from a few months ago at $645 and he agreed to beat if i paid straight away

        • If getting USB-C/PD 60+W support and you will mostly use a Macbook Pro 13 inch, and you don't have Xbox One X (or have zero intention to use it on the monitor), then U2721DE is a better buy. Work has an older generation of Dell Ultrasharp 27 inch monitors and they are good. The Ethernet port support is also useful for Macbook Pro (making a traditionally a donglebook no longer dongle dependent with just 1 cable) - though you could use WiFi.

    • +1

If you are not doing CPU intensive work the monitor like normal web browsing, word etc will be able to charge your mac book pro.

  • (edit, removed)

  • Would this monitor be better than the Dell S2721DGF 27" I ordered from last week's sale? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/555647
I don't game but mainly need a second monitor with my iMac for video editing and Photoshop work.

    • -1

Why'd you buy a high refresh gaming monitor with VA instead of an IPS if you're doing colour work? Is it just because other people upvoted that deal and it was cheap?

      • No the second monitor is just to handle the tool box and effects controls windows. The main photo and video editing windows are on the main iMac screen.

      • +2

The Dell S2721DGF is not VA it is IPS. I'd be more inclined to go for this one though, if video editing and photo work is a priority. Although the S2721DGF is no slouch either and you get 165Hz and it has full height adjust, swivel, pivot which is great for a secondary monitor.

        • My mistake, crossed streams with the Xiaomi one that's been on sale every 30 seconds here

@DSOTM that's fine, I'd still go with this over the gaming monitor, especially as a secondary

          • +1

@SydStrand: Well to be fair an IPS 1440 144+Hz monitor at $500 is a bit of an anomaly. Almost all of them are VA.

    • +1

In short, yes for photoshop work this would be better. High refresh rate monitor doesn't really do much for you there, colour accuracy and brightness would benefit more

  • How does this compare to the LG 27UK850‑W ? thanks :)

    • LG 27UK850‑W is discontinued. The newer model is LG 27UL600-W. This is on sale at Shopping Express for $485 if you are interested. Amazon selling it for $565

      • Ah thanks sorry I meant the 27UL850-W always get the L and K mixed haha

  • +5

I’ve had this monitor for two years and it’s been a mixed bag.

    Good:
    1. Looks great in my living room. With the USB-C setup it’s minimal and clean
    2. Works well for movies, photo editing and productivity. I don’t game, so can’t speak for that.
    3. Two USB-A port hub on the back. Great for connecting a speaker/microphone or mouse dongle.

    Bad:
    1. I had a problem with the screen flickering occasionally, but Dell were really responsive- 20 mins on the phone and then a replacement monitor arrived 2 days later (mid-pandemic, too).
    2. My 2018 MBP has some sort of compatibility issue with this monitor where it wakes up every 10 mins to say “100% charged” when asleep and connected to the USB-C. There is no fix for this issue, other than shutting the laptop down, rather than allowing it to sleep.
    3. The brightness adjustment buttons are fussy, and the Dell app doesn’t work on a Mac. There is a free 3rd party app (Luna) that allows you to sync/adjust the brightness from laptop.
    4. No height adjustment. The VESA reference fooled me too, as I expected to be able to mount it to a stand. It also fooled all the Dell techs I spoke to about it as well.

    • Does it keep macbook charged or does it slowly drain?

      • It keeps it charged at 100%

        • Thank you thats good news.

Your second point regarding the screen waking up is a bit concerning though. I assume when you switch off the display the macbook doesn't charge.

    • What mouse and keyboard do you use ?

      • Just some random Microsoft mouse I’ve had for years. And I just use the laptop keyboard.

    • Re your point 2: My Macbook does this too with my USB-C monitor (Dell U3419W).

I think I've found that as long as lock the screen (Control-Command-Q) before walking away, it will force the monitor will go into sleep mode and I believe that notification sound + 100% charging wake up doesn't happen. Try giving that a go.

      • I’ll try that, thanks!

  • +2

Why would you buy this over ultrasharp U2719D?

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-ultrasharp-27-monitor-u…

    • +1

      USB C?

    • That one isn't usb c but see my comment above about the DE

  • I had got the U2721DE from an earlier ozb deal.

And was wondering what the differences were and found this link.

Posting here in case anyone was curious.

    https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/comparison/f9d711ea…

    • This one has a peak brightness of 600 and implemented HDR. It has free sync, but still 60Hz.

Corners were cut on the stand (non-height adjustable and no VESA mount so you cannot use a VESA 100x100 stand or VESA 100x100 monitor arm), USB-C/PD is limited to 45W - that might still be okay for MBP 13 inch except it won't charge as fast. Also, from a user feedback, it is not a good idea to keep it plugged-in when you are not using the MBP as it tends to wake up the MBP every 10 minutes or so. But, due to Apple cutting corner and move to USB-C instead of using MagSafe, you cannot tell whether the laptop is fully charged or not without turning it on. We won't blame Apple for that, will we? Apple is always right.

Honestly, this whole thunderbolt 3, USB-C is good in theory, in reality, it has technical limitations and ended up costing us more money.

  • Can I expect picture quality with hdr with ps4 pro on this?

    • PS4 Pro doesn't support 1440p mode, only 1080p or 2160p (4K), even if some games are rendered at 1440p, but they are still upscaled to 2160p.

You can run this monitor at interpolation mode, but it won't be as sharp. I am going to guess it supports 1:1 mode, but even so, you will see black border. For gaming at 1440p, you are looking at PC or XB1X.

      • Thanks for the explanations

  • Good post

  • How's shipping looking like? My last order is still due end of OCT

  • The Dell or this - open box LG 27UL850W ? $695

Edit- Delivery in 4 to 6 weeks is a negative though

    • HDR vs 4K, which one is more important? Is no VESA mount a problem?

4K 27 inch is really only good for movies and to some extent 4K gaming (because 27 inch is too small for 4K). HDR400 isn't real HDR. The simplest way to look at it is that HDR400 isn't going to wow you compared to the latest iPhones or Samsung phones with proper HDR support. But then, is IPS HDR600 going to beat OLED in HDR?

4K on 27 inch, you pretty much have to use a scaling mode for general desktop usage. It is less of an issue for Mac, but the scaling isn't perfect for Windows (modern apps are fine). However, most Windows users tend to have some older apps that they still use, and it is likely there isn't a good scaling option that works flawlessly across all Windows apps.

If you have XB1X, then either is fine. If you only have PS4 Pro, and you want to use it on the new monitor, it's not that pleasant to pick 1440p.

      • Thanks so much for the reply! It’s for a MacBook Pro 13 and use is web design and photo editing, no gaming. No worries re the mount
Sounds like the dell may be the better way to go

I have this monitor, Great picture quality and feels less stressful on the eyes. Great WFH monitor. Some things to take not of, HDR mode only works through the HDMI and not USB-C port. HDR mode must be activated in the monitor setting and in windows for it to work. Windows GUI doesn't look that great to really only beneficial for movies and games that can take advantage of the capability. The monitor comes with a power brick. On MBP13 (2018) the charger is strong enough to keep the notebook charged. I have not had the waking issues a previous poster had mentioned.

    • Was the USB-C test done on Mac or Windows? If on Mac, was the High Dynamic Range checkbox available?

      • HDR is only available though HDMI. Confirmed works on Windows. On Mac I could not get the HDR checkbox to become available, even with the use of a USB-C to HDMI cable.

  • I have a surfacebook and dock with 2 x 24" using the displayPorts on the dock, any idea if the USB C would enable a 3rd or 4th monitor including the Surfacebook itself?

  • This shows how insane the last deal was for the 2721dgf at $500 1440p at 165 hz ips using lg nano ips technology. Only caveat is most people will have to wait until september/october for eta.

    • Does the 2721dgf actually use the LG Panel tech? I bought one regardless as it was a good deal. just wanted conformation that I am avoiding AUOptronics

      • yes someone on a reddit thread has confirmed it.

  • Sorry can I also ask for those using USB c can you plug a dongle for wireless mouse and keyboard into the screen and use that? Any recommendations and keyboard and mice ?

    • +1

I have this monitor and have the mouse and keyboard dongle plugged into the screen. That way I can switch between my work and personal laptops without having to use two different keyboards.

I have just a standard company issued Logitech keyboard/mouse.

      • thanks sounds great!
