  • Does anyone know who makes these tvs for Big W. I saw one in store today and seemed decent but wasn't really anything to compare to other than more Eko tvs

Ayonz (They also on the Blaupunkt/Jaeger/Seiki brands) distribute EKO, made by Tsinghua Tongfang Company China
Standard generic Chinese TV manufacturer. Def on the low end of the Chinese quality scale

      • +6

Tsinghua Tongfang is a solid brand that dates back decades. It was a household name in China even when I was little (ie in the late 90/early 20s)

        • +31

That doesn't mean much, Sharp was a big name when I was a kid and look at them now.

@[Deactivated]: I know a genuine Magnetbox, Panaphonic, & Sorny when I see one.

          • @[Deactivated]: Well I agree that Sharp is not a premium band but also not a low end brand even now.
There is always a trade off between price, real quality and perceived quality.
Samsung flagship phones with Exynos processors are double the price of LG flagship phones with snapdragon processors? Why perceived value / quality and has nothing to do with real quality or the 2X price premium

        • +6

If I'm not mistaken, Tsinghua Tongfang dates back to the late Xin dynasty

      • +5

Tsinghua Tongfang now is a rubbish brand

Seems like a great deal for a TV of that size, even if not of particularly good quality.

    • +7

But will it be a great deal for a paperweight of that size in 2 years is the question?

  • -4

might get it if it was $700

    • +48

Something tells me that if this was $700, the comment would be "might get it if it was $500"

      • +3

Might get it if it was $300

        • +2

Might get it if it was $100

42" is tempting for a bedroom TV, especially given it has inbuilt chromecast and android (assuming Kodi should be able to be installed?).

      • Low 40s is a good size for the bedroom.

In late 2017 I managed to pickup a Samsung 43-inch 4K for the bedroom, reduced from $1000 to $600 at JB! Was thrilled with that. It’s so much easier to get a 50-inch these days but it was just too large. Been cheaper since but was thrilled at the time!

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/349847

      • I think the inbuilt Android TV would run pretty crap fairly quick. Although can't complain when spending 300 clams for a 42"

        • Can't speak for this model but a lot of these low end smart tvs have a delay when turning on, either the screen will stay black for ages or it will turn onto TV but you won't be able to enter any menus or change channels until it has booted up.

          • @Agret: That happens on our Hi(Non)Sense ones. And none of the controls work either until it's fully booted up, so if you turned off the TV at a high volume and you turn on the TV late at night, good luck not waking up the whole building.

How to get 5% off wish gc??

      • +3

        you must be new here

        • Not really ,but I never bothered with giftcards. Rather coupon Deals always interest me. So asking

    • +1

      use 5% discounted wish gc

The Wish GC portal is currently glitching?!? Payment will not process. Tried two different cards. Tried cashrewards and shopback. Tried $500 presets and $499 option.

      • So no luck purchasing any amount through Cashrewards ?

        • Or ShopBack. But maybe it's working again now.

Pick up only seems at some locations

And reviews seems (not) good enough 🍋

    • +7

not the same one - the one you linked does not have android tv and google play capability.

Also, 3 bad reviews are too small of a sample to infer anything about the product.

    • +6

Avoid Product Review, it's heavily biased towards negative reviews

  • +2

is this the cheapest any 75" has been historically?

    • +10

I got the non-android EKO 75" for $899 when first released. Decent TV for the price, just slapped a ROKU Ultra onto it for all my streaming needs.

      • +2

Me too. I have Mi box on it and its great.

The TV software is a bit slow at startup (low power CPU) and its a bit buggy. Ive had to factory reset once to get past a bug with Audio Description never turning off. But overall, esp with some sort of streaming box, its great.

        • How slow to startup? My Soniq takes about 75 seconds (37 seconds?)

          • @barryquinn: Sorry I wasn't clear. It starts up immediately but, for example, if you want to change inputs straight away, it is sometimes sluggish moving the cursor all the way across to the right of the screen where the 3 HDMI inputs are (on the input menu bar).

Also it takes about 15 seconds for the sound to come through to my sound bar via ARC - to initialise that is.

      • Tell me about the Roku Ultra. Thinking about getting one to play Apple TV on my android TV

        • +2

No worries bro try this link

        • +1

Pretty painful to get it working in Australia (VPNs and what not for initial setup). Once done tho, it's fantastic. Fast, has all the apps I use (Netflix etc etc etc all the normies but also like Rakuten + Plex

          • +1

@Ryugen: Im very underwhelmed by my Roku. Very little works in Aus without painful hackery. Plex app is crap and hangs half the time. Youtube app is also crap and hangs (lots of complains on forums. Roku blame Google and Google blame Roku).

I got a Mi box which is WAY better

  • +5

Large Tv deals feel super rare these days.

    • Hopefully this will drive some competition. Often Good Guys/JB/HN drop prices to match Aldi TV deals. Some of the Aldi deals have been steeper though lately.

  • +6

"EKO is a bold start up brand founded in Australia. Our sole purpose is to deliver incredible home entertainment products that are technology rich, provide content from around the world so you can be entertained in every room of your home."

Interesting business initiative. So they just set up a company, find a Chinese TV factory, slap their "EKO" branding onto the TVs made and sell the TVs in Australia under the "Australian" brand?

    • +6

Yes, like Kogan and many others for many products

    • +34

You just described 80% of consumer goods.

    • +3

While not the best musically the EKO true wireless ear buds are very good, strong signal and battery life. Just don't stick them in the washing machine. XD

  • Does anyone know how long is the warranty on these ?

    • +3

shoudl be able to get 2-3 years under ACL. you can deal with BigW and don't have to worry about talking to the manufacturer directly. My personal experience with BigW has been great, bought a TV from them and 2 years later it failed to turn on, they (albeit after a bit of back and forth with the head office - tip: call the store and ask for the manager and don't bother calling their 13 number if you purchased it in store) sent someone to pick it up from my house and processed a full refund.

      • -4

ACL would likely give you 10 years, believe it or not.

Most people have upgraded long before then, but its good to have if you plan on keeping the TV.

        • 10 years? Even for a budget TV?

        • +5

good luck with that, 10 years on a 1K tv lol.

        • +3

If you spent 10k on it maybe, at this price point not a chance

          • @DoesntEvenMatter: I would say 3-5 years max with ACL for anything between 1500-2000 and if less then 1500 you are looking at 2 years

            • @sub7er: Agreed

            • +1

@sub7er: Well, for a product like a TV, I'd think 10 years would be a reasonable expected lifetime.

I had a 2013 LG washing machine that developed insidious rust, and ACL (2020) had the washing machine taken away, and I got a fair chunk of money to put towards a new washing machine (also LG, personal pref).

Might be a case by case thing, but I'd like to think a TV at $1000 could at least last 10 years if only turned on for an average of 1 hour per day.

              • +2

@Oofy Doofy: Nope, I think there was details of this posted on the acl website and definitely not at this price point. It was based on cost spent in proportion to expected life. It's also not about hours on for life, cycles can do more harm to the components then the run time. 21st century, electrics are throw away consumables unless you spend big

                • +1

@DoesntEvenMatter: 10 years might be pushing it but surely a reasonable amount of time for any tv would be 5 years at a minimum. Heck i spent $900 on my 42" Panasonic and it still has no faults 10 years later

                  • @borgsta: If it was LG, Sony or Samsung you might get that if you have spent over 2k on it and actually still have the receipt

              • +2

@Oofy Doofy: Same bought Bosch Washing machine Bing Lee in 2009 and after 7-8 years got 70-75% back from Bosch they offered replacment but was not as good quality as orginal.

Tried with our LG TV as they removed Skype from TV (MS decision) and we used had the camera but LG would not provide anything. Did not pursue it. Had argueed that the TV was not fit for one key aspect of original purpose. And yes kids used to speak to grandparents overseas.

Recently had my Sony A7RII (bouhgt used from firend) needed repair (internal SD Card and some other issues internal) of about 500$ after some effort in getting orignal invoice from DigiDirect , the Sony repairer DigiCam was able to get Sony to reapair under consummer gurantee. This was for a camera bought in 2015 being repaired for free in 2020.

We are very lucky in Australia to have Conssumer Gurantees. Having worked at some large IT / Telco's i know we had regular training on CG's and fit for purpose for everyone in company even though we did not deal in this area. From Service Delivery perspective it was requried for us to understand and be carfull of commitements we made to customers. This does not happen overseas, so again we are quite lucky in Australia.

If i recall correctly i think the CG issues really came to light when we started getting expensive Iphones and Ipad's breaking just after warranty ended. I am not 100% please fact check this but i recall that was the begining of it. But could have been from earlier than that.

    • What warranty.. it’s buy and throw away (bata)

    • +1

      12 months Manufacturer Warranty

      https://www.eko-entertainment.com.au/warranty

      But ACL definitely overides that

      • Yep for at least another 3 years

        • Isn't ACL only 2 years?

  • 100HZ?

    edit. nope 60Hz

  • +2

On the website it says "Price after promotion $1599.00". Anyone know how long it is on special?

Edit: Answering my own question: It's in the catalogue that runs from today until September 9th.

does not mention amount of internal storage ….

As an EKO owner, happy man.

Bought the 65in during boxing day Sales last year for $550. And for the money I'm very happy. I Await the $750 for 75in during the boxing day sales this year.

    • Nice

    • Yep likewise it's a pretty solid tv for the price. The only major bugbears I have is the menu sound which can't be turned off, and it sometimes needs a reboot to fix wifi pairing.

Besides that picture is good though needed a little tweaking to get it to how you want it.

    • +1

Likewise. Very happy with our 65".

A couple of quirks but definitely no deal-breakers. Was fantastic value at $550.

  • Thoughts on this for the upcoming PS5? Do I give up my 100hz 55inch for 60hz 75inch? 🤔

    • +3

Depends what you plan on playing, reports coming out of multiple ps5 games running at 120fps so i'd stick with max Hz

    • +3

Chances are your 100hz TV is a 60hz TV with motion interpolation to create fake 100hz which will be bad for games due to the input lag…

I think only LG OLEDs have the real 120hz tv…

  • +2

Just saw this at my local big w, I have to say I am impressed with the quality. For $1000 I honestly dont think you can go wrong if this thing doesnt break down in 7 years time.

    • They had it plugged in and running? What was on screen? Just back from my local, they have a few boxes but none open on display.

The store rep was quite flippant, mentioned a 1 1/2 year warranty (that I didn't find mentioned on the box) and a 90 day change of mind policy, that I just read up on and it specifically is only for unused items. Unlike Aldi's 60 days, any reason, any condition.

I reckon I'll wait for a similar priced one at ALDI, unless people here confirm great quality picture and reasonable sound.

Also: they don't deliver and I have no way of transporting this monster upright. The box has several 'do not lay flat' warnings. Comments?

      • I transported a 65" in the rear of a sedan with seats folded down. Obviously it was laying flat. About an hour drive, very nervous but all fine in the end

  • I'm not sure you can compare this brand's 65" and 75" TVs as they may have a different manufacturers' panel. Anyone able to shed some light on this?

Great price, would love to see one in person before buying.
