  • I've just purchased a tv from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/561530

Would it be doubling up by purchasing this with an Android TV? Or would the TV actually run faster as the box is doing the processor

    • +1

I have a Sony android TV, I believe my shield is still more responsive and capable than the built-in TV OS.

  • bought one, thanks

  • +1

    got one, thanks!

  • Nice one. I have the 2017 and think it's one of the best devices I've ever bought. The upgrade is incremental but at this price worth it.

  • If I have a basic Netflix subscription (e.g 1080p resolution) would the Shield upscale it to 4k on a UHD TV?

    • Yep.

    • from what i read it upscales any video to look way better. so im really hoping it upscales my older 480p content to look like 720 or 1080.

    • +3

I hope that people understand that upscaling wont give you a picture like a native 4k source (upscaling is just trying to intelligently stretch the current pixels, cant add missing details/data that is present in a proper 4k source). So right now if you are watching your 1080p netflix source on a 4k TV, the TV is already upscaling the image… not the same as if you had a 4k subscription. Whether the Shield would give you a better picture is very hard to say and the difference would really be minor.

      • Interestingly at the bitrates Netflix are giving us H265 4K (around 8Mb/s) there is likely little difference between a 1080p stream and a 4k stream in detail … other than the capability of the local upscaler not doing something stupid ;)

  • Dang, I bought at $365 only a month ago. There must be a new model coming.

    • nah its ebays 21st birthday so they're doing deals.

    • +1

If you bought the one with the Toblerone remote, that will be the current model until at least 2022.

  • Want to buy it but sadly doesn't seem to support AV1…

    • Currently running Android TV 9.0…
I think it is on the cards for future updates…. Android TV 10.0

    • What do you mean by AV1?

Edit: nevermind. A new codec similar but better than x265. More hardware intensive too.

Anyone used GameStream on one of these? Any good?

    • Want to know as well

  • this is now my go to device it just does it all with no fuss. i like it so much i got one for a mate that helps me out a lot.

  • I bought this when it first came out have had a great experience with Plex and 4k HDR since

  • I paid $367 for this back in June so this is a steal (I don't feel too hurt as I sold my 2015 Nvidia Shield for $320 at the time). Just be aware that our dollar against the USD is on the way back up (72c currently) and projected to hit 80c by the end of the year which means the price could drop further

Hopefully this becomes the new normal price when discounted.

No eBay Plus for me so will need to wait.

  • Was trying to justify the purchase given it's not quite future proof (missing HDMI 2.1 and AV1 codec) and it's gone. Saved $315 today!

  • I bought one of these on a previous OZB deal and love it. The UI/app load/stream loading etc is fast, smooth and gorgeous, way better than anything I've ever seen built into a TV.

  • Shame it can't run Apple TV+ otherwise looks good.

    • whats on apple tv+ thats good? ive never used it on my apple tv and have a 1yr subscription lol

      • True.. not much but I didn't mind mythic quest

        • oh yea that show. ive been meaning to watch it since im a fan of always sunny.

    • As mentioned, it's slim pickings, so probably not a huge demand for it right now, although I recently watched Servant, and it was decent.

Word on the street is that a Kodi add-on for Apple TV+ is in the works.

    • Was it worth it?

  • +4

For those that missed this, it's also now $349 @ The Good Guys and is eligible for $40 store credit also. Then can use discounted gift cards to save even more..

    • Nice - worth it's own post ;)

    • I think you can get a further $20 off if you pay with latitude pay aswell

  • arggh, put an order in for HN at $359 on the weekend.. hasn't even shipped yet.

    edit: correction, $349.95 + $9.95 shipping

  • Damn it.. Missed out.

  • My 2017 box just keeps going and delivers everything I need …But….the remote is garbage.
Have tried to buy the 2019 remote however it seems Thier unavailable in Australia….grrrrrr
Buying is won't ship here and fleabay want nearly the price of the whole box.
Anyone been able to source the remote here in Oz…?

    • The nvidia website says the remote will be available soon in Australia, but " soon" has come and gone now, and still nothing.

I own both the 2017 and 2019 shields, the Toblerone remote is an dramatic improvement. Backlight, programmable buttons, AAA batteries…… But it's not worth $100 from ebay!

    • There are plenty of aftermarket remotes that you can choose from. Bought an $8 one from ebay using USB and does everything like the original, home, return, pause, volume functions and more. Bluetooth a bit more expensive though.
