This also gives an additional 10% off Sony lenses in cart on top of the already reduced 15% sale price they have. Great deal.

    • +1

that extra 10% with 15% off already is very appealing

Thought that was in the form of a cashback, limited to $50 USD a month?

      Suncorp rewards is 5%

  • This makes my Lumix G7 and G85 look like junk in comparison. 2 SD cards, joystick, 24 MP, that screen hinge looks interesting even if it doesn't rotate. But I read you don't even need a full frame camera anymore, that micro 4/3 takes pictures that are indistinguishable in print.

    • +4

      In good lighting conditions, yes.

    • +3

People focus on gear too much - probably anything better than a Ricoh GR III and many professionals would be very happy with the shots they've taken for something like a zine.

      • +8

Exactly, it's the person behind the camera what is most important. In good light, iPhone can take very good photos as well. Having said that, full frame takes very clean pictures under low light situations. Something i can't live without. I have apsc camera too but around 1000-2000 iso, artifacts start to be noticeable. With the FF even 2500 iso looks very clean.

        • -4

When someone makes a wireless speed light system compatible with iPhone, dedicated camera are done for.

          • +1

@AustriaBargain: Still can't bokeh properly like a fullframe.
Software bokeh only in an iPhone/smartphones.

Variable aperture as well, though iPhones (and smartphones for that matter) have a tiny lens and sensor, so everything should be in focus anyway

Shutter speed.. can be controlled (like Xperia 1 ii), but it's still an electronic shutter compared to physical shutter.

    • +4

Micro 4/3 cameras are great unless you really need the low light capability or depth of field.

      • I suppose I could have bought a full frame instead of strobe lights.

    • +3

I mean saying a full frame is the same as a smaller sensor camera because it’s not distinguishable in print is entirely the wrong way to look at it… both can produce a photo that is good.. but the situations where a full frame can produce that good photo are different. There are more factors to it, but for the same tech (let’s say, Sony to Sony sensor of the same quality / year as a basic comparison), a larger sensor captures more light, meaning a smaller aperture can be used (relates to light / depth of field also), or a faster shutter speed can be used. Or, better general low light capture without camera shake, or just the ability to use glass that is only available for full frame that is of higher quality also (but that’s based on manufacturer choices more than sensor size, but in practicality it’s a factor). Overall though, I suppose saying they both capture good pictures is a little like saying a 4x4 or Lambo’ also get’s from A-B like a Camry… well, yes it does… but not always depending on location and terrain (4x4), and not in the same way (the Lamborghini).

In addition, the full frame cameras are where the flagship models sit, so generally thats where the company’s have often put their best features.

      • You’re right. Every time I see photos taken with the Sigma 40mm f1.4 on a full frame camera, they just blow me away. Nothing like this lens available for smaller sensors. Having said that, I would not want to carry around a lens of that size and weight.

"But I read you don't even need a full frame camera anymore" - This is a load of bulls**t. It's like saying 'I don't need a car because I have my legs'. Legs and the car does the same thing, bring you from A to B. But are they the same? Definitely not. Full frame delivers much more detail (no, not just for poster prints, those 'more details' are visible on small prints too), and much much better low light performance, much better creamy looking bokeh photos, much better ISO performance etc (the list goes on). APSC crop sensors provide less and micro 4/3 provides even less. So it's a simple question whether you're happy with less or you just want more. Therefore rather than generalising 'you don' even need a full frame', you may want to say 'Even though full frame would have been much better, micro 4/3 cameras are still better than my mobile phone so I'll just get that one' which is more accurate way of saying it.

g85 has far superior ibis than a7iii if that makes you feel a little bit better :p
      g85 vs a7iii ibis test

      • That does make me feel better.

      • Makes me a little more stable though

      • +1

How is it superior…does it have a longer beak or legs?

        • It spends less time scavenging in the bin.

    • I've had m4/3 with an f/1.8 prime. I could basically put that away at about 6pm every night due to its poor high iso performance whereas with an FF camera, its lowlight capability meant I was regularly shooting through to about 10-11pm while out on vacation.

There's obviously huge tradeoffs in terms of size and weight, but whatever floats your boat.

    • When it comes to full frame and apsc and m4/3, it’s really synonymous to PS4/Xbox vs Nintendo.

Just like Nintendo focussed on fun, affordable and easy to use experience and focuses less on extreme graphics, it’s the same as how m4/3 and APSC cameras are like, they are fun to use usually because there’s more out of box effects and also smaller bodies and more affordable.

PS4/Xbox is like full frame, chasing for super quality, but the downside is still weight and portability, although the A7 and a few other full frames recently had improved that through the mirrorless route, the lens situation is still comparatively big and expensive as well.

The thing I loved about m4/3 the most was really affordable lenses and how small they were. But the bodies really went stagnant, and also they just never seem to break through a certain ISO level barrier, it was like ISO3200 or 6400 where you’re like forget about it. But sure photo editing could help with it.

  • +2

I swear this camera body was 1900 without cashback this time last year…

    • +1

If you have a business and have access to the instant asset write off then you save more doing this format because the cashback is off the books.

    • +1

And now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I price matched at Sony kiosk, and then I also got Sony Amex cashback twice (2*$100) and TRS back as well… Down to $1600-1700 final

      • +3

Yes the good old days when gadgets were cheap and you could fly on a plane…

  • Yep sony jack up pricing and then offer cashback

    • +6

Lol, definitely haven't jacked. Everyone was waiting for it to drop sub 2k last year during sale periods. which on a few occasions it did.

Doesn't mean the price has been jacked.

With the 5% cashrewards, emex offers, discounted giftcards, price matches and $400 eftpos giftcard. It has been a very competitive price recently.

      • It has been around 2k mark last year, and now it's 2.3k almost one year later, and this not price jacking or maybe sony gear value increase by year? Besides this is not the only item price jacking, at least they jack everything and blame the pandemic. Maybe they did learn something from ebay

  • +2

Price match with Sony store (very easy to do online) and get 5% cashback (no cap)

  • Excellent deal. It rumored that Sony is all set to announce a7c . A smaller aiii like in apsc size body. Would kill both the aiii and apsc IMHO.
Will not be surprised if a7iii start being dumped in the market.

Btw you can price match this with digidirect and get free delivery.

    • Rumoured USD2k. Not sure if new censor though.

    • +2

Seems unlikely for Sony to kill their APSC line without just killing E mount all together. The day will come, but I don't think it'll be on their next release. It'll either be magnitudes more expensive, or there will still be the appeal of APSC sized lenses for portability and budget. They haven't even released an a5100 body size killer yet with APSC.

  • I feel that photos from a full frame sensor have a distinct look to them….something aps-c or micro four-thirds can't emulate. The wide dynamic range that a Sony a7iii captures is amazing, especially when it comes to post processing raw files. Then again, lenses play a big role in creating those 'image characters' that are hard to explain….. you just see/feel it. However, in my experience, the later Sony cameras, such as a6100, a6400, a6600, a7r iv and a9ii, have better colour science than a7iii/a7r iii generations when it comes to straight off-camera JPEGs. I am an avid Sony camera user but also love the colours that Fujifilm cameras produce.

  • Should I get this or wait? I want a good camera for travel, but who knows when travel will be possible again? If I wait do you think better prices will be available later?

What's a good one size fits all lens that isn't like an elephant trunk?

    • +2

This might be a bit unwieldy if you intend on using it solely for travel. I'd suggest looking into the Sony A6400 which might suit your needs better. It is however, an APS-C camera.

    • +2

This is a great camera for travel if paired with something like the new Tamron 28-200mm (if you want a single lens with a wide range). Though I always recommend picking up a cheap prime lens as well for those times you want a nice portrait at dinner, and there's almost no light, and you need to blur all the ugly fudgers in the background to oblivion.

    • +3

Sony Zeiss 35mm 2.8 is a good all-purpose lens. Is a very compact lens too.

      • Agree its a good all-purpose compact lens, but quite a bit overpriced for what it is.

    • I would highly recommend Zeiss 55mm f/1.8. A bit pricey but totally worth. Photos just pop. In 95% of my circumstances, I did not need anything else.

      • +2

It's definitely a nice lens but if that's your only lens I think you'll find it too long for most travel photography purposes.

      • how do you compare it with 50mm 1.8 do you really think it is that big difference(according to price/qualityt)?

        • +2

50mm f1.8 focuses slowly. Photography is all about the art of using light or/and capturing the citical moment. It can be frustrating sometimes if that moment elapses yet your lens was struggling.

          • +1

@RimofLeo: i'm not filming birds or nature or anything, so I can accept it taking a bit longer if the lens can be more compact.

  • +1

Sony 28mm f/2 is a very good affordable choice for travelling as well as low light photography.

    • Agreed. And 28mm is typical for most mobile phones standard focal-length. It may be good for beginners to start with rather than 50mm.

  • Can anyone suggest me the easiest and fastest way to get 5% jb gift card?
I dont have suncorp account. How much time does it take to open account?
