EKO 65" 4K QLED TV at the introductory price of $749 from BIG W.

EKO TVs have a pretty good rep in other OzBargain threads. This appears to be their first QLED model and has a "normal" price of $1199.

The plain LED models are usually $699 so for an extra $50 this seems a no brainer to me.

The only downside I can see is the 12 month warranty. We bought using a credit card to get the extra 12 months warranty that most cards offer. Alternatively you could pay with discounted gift cards to save another $37 and take your chances with ACL and BIG W in the event of a problem within the second year.

I picked mine up this afternoon and the guy at the loading dock said they'd already sold five this morning, which was totally unprecedented, so the word is out.

Will update when it's set up but if its a total dog I'm confident I can get a refund from BIG W without any dramas.

        • Yeah I was surprised too. Even went into service menu to mess with the speaker amps and pump up the sub bass a bit. Sounds good enough to not need a sound bar

I know it's not even comparable price wise but if you can I'd highly recommend saving up for an lg OLED. My 65 c9 which has been professionally calibrated still leaves me in awe often. I was watching the dark knight in 4k HDR the other day and it was gorgeous to look at.

    • +1

I must admit that my lg c8 oled does have a fantastic picture, until certain colours come up on screen, and then I remember what a piece of crap this thing is as I view all of the burnt in images that have accrued over the last 2 years.
Waiting for the samsung Q80t or Q95T to come down in price.

      • I have two more c7s and have never had an issue of burn in.

    • +3

While you are at it save a bit more for the 77 inch LG OLED as it's even more immersive. And also only 3 times the price /s

    • This is for a holiday place. It will replace a real POS 32" Toshiba. Was never going to spend more than $1k.Started looking at things like the hisense 58" s5 for around the same money from GG commercial. Still may end up with that if the EKO is a dog but I think it's worth a try.

  • Seems interesting for the price but wonder what the processor and upscaling is like for a price like this.

    • +2

Suggest setting your expectations very low to avoid disappointment.

It seems its out of stock in Victoria

Seems to be plenty on the Sunshine Coast!

  • I've just purchased the EKO 75 Inch Frameless LED TV a few days ago from Big W for $804 after discounts.

I'm still yet to pick it up as the store is out of my 5km lockdown zone in Melbourne - has anyone got one that can comment on their experience and the screen quality?

    • The 65 or the 75?
      There's a separate thread on the 75 here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/561530
That's a good discount, how did you get it?

      • The 75 version, I purchased it using a friend's staff discount (10% off) + gift cards that were 5% off.

    • -4

You are allowed to go and get it
Iv spoke to a person on the covid hot line number
And I was told I can travel from country vic in to melbourne for shopping So u would be allowed to pick up your click n collect

      • Thanks for letting me know - I've got read this online from the Department of Health and Human Sevices

'Can I continue to pick up items from e-commerce stores?
Yes, you can pick up necessary items or items you have already purchased where pick up can’t be delayed. You must stay within 5km of your home, unless you cannot get the necessary good within 5km. '

The TV was only in stock at a Big W store approx 15kms away, so I guess it would be ok. Although I'm not sure if it would be deemed 'necessary' per se..

        • -2

Yep your all good to go I travels 230 Ks round trip yesterday all good

        • +1

I would probably put it off. This is a bit of a grey area and if you get pulled over you will need to have a good answer. Everyone has their own interpretation of the rules and doesnt help when the ppl on the covid hotline r just contract/temp call centre staff reading from script. It's probably easier to explain if your from the country where there isnt alot of major stores nearby.

          DHHS mentions this -

Can I travel more than 5km from my home to collect a purchase?
You can travel up to 5km from your home to collect necessary goods and services. You should postpone making any purchases that will require you to travel beyond 5km to collect or alternatively organise for the delivery of your purchase. Pick up can only be contactless click and collect.

For some people the nearest essential goods and services will be more than 5km away. In this situation you may travel beyond 5km to the nearest provider.

@Dr Techno: Dont know y I get negative
I’m just pointing out the facts I rang the hotline number and was told you can do a click n collect at your closest store that has stock so your fine
It’s even listed on the dhhs site as well

            • @Dex38313: I dont neg ppl dont know who that was. I called up the hotline when we first went into lockdown. poor call centre staff didnt have much of a clue and just refer to same public websites as we do. even on the DHHS website theres different interpretations depending on what page, the one I copied and pasted is from the same website where it says to postpone or organise delivery :) ultimately comes down to if you get pulled over and the interpretation of the officier at hand. cant wait for all this to be over though.

              • @Dr Techno: Didn’t mean to imply that from u
But people r neging me because I state the facts from the dhhs staff

        • -7

Chairman Dan has locked us in our homes, tell them the TV is necessary so you can keep up with Chairman's orders.

        • I’m not sure a new tv is a necessary item. It’s an important item but if you don’t get it nothing bad will happen. Is it worth a $1600 fine for an $800 TV. Can you possibly get it couriered? Maybe can get it delivered for $100

          • @snooksy: You'd be asking to appear in headlines like the person who went x kms to get a haircut. Because hey, it was necessary and his barber was beyond the 5 km radius.

But ridiculing that was a thing 5 weeks ago, now you'll just get your $1600 fine without publicity, I guess.

            Edit: you got auto-tagged, @snooksy

We bought the 75” had it delivered in January and within 4 months was already picked up and returned

The TV just stopped working all of a sudden with no reason - The manufacture advised they needed a part for it but didn’t know when it would be delivered due to shipments being delayed with covid. We ended up returning it via big w as they didn’t have a suitable replacement.

We weren’t happy with the tv in general. Picture quality was quite pixelated and sound was shocking.

In retrospect you pay for what you get. We aren’t technical people but know I won’t be buying an eko product again.

      • +5

The frameless model wasn't available in January. It only came out last month.

        • Good luck - hope they have improved on the last model which was nothing but terrible

I’m still loving my Panasonic plasma.

    • +2

Still prefer watching movies/tv series on our Panasonic Plasma over all the LCD panels I have ever had. Never had OLED though…

    • Still rocking a 55 inch Samsung plasma here. Gotta admit the image doesnt hold up though.

    • +1

My 55" Panasonic plasma has a very nice picture, still going strong.

      • +2

I’m still clinging to my p54v20a

    • +1

I have a 55 inch Pana Plasma St30a 3D and its still rocking - menu is fast - change channels is fast - update epg is fast - remote is good
      Picture quality is awesome

I bought a 65inch Hisense 4K , remote lags, and has been replaced, channel change is slow- omg so slow - epg oh gawd half the time it doesn't refresh
Ghosts on some 1080, Ok when watching 4k through Xbox

If you like your TV's and FTA and quick menus from the TV with Out extra's - then spend a bit more

That Noted - I bought 2 EKO's for Work last deal - 75 inch they stay on pretty much 24/7 - just displays of web data
      and so far no problems
      - Didnt like that they ask to allow your data to be collected- so turned off all that - as its a work TV
cant find the link to it

    • I was in the same boat and finding it hard to justify upgrading my plasma when it was still working fine. I ended up getting a brand new samsung crystal led tv on fb for $400 less than retail and am very happy with the purchase. The integrated smart features are fantastic and 4k looks great although the plasma probably looked better with 1080p or less quality content.

    • Still loving my pana plasma and pioneer plasma. I was watching the TDF in the bedroom on the 50” pana and it’s still a buttery smooth image. The Oled and projector now get most of my viewing now though. It was a sad day when my 65” 2013 pana plasma died though I stepped up to the pana oled.

      • Do you know what killed it? My 10 yo pana plasma a month or so ago one morning decided it wanted to turn it self off after been turned on for a short duration.
Seeing I had nothing to loose I pulled the cover off and dusted 10 years of grime of the internal components and checked for blown fuses. Did a power drain reset and it went back to working.
        No new tv for me…

    • -2

My 65VT20 plasma from 2011 is still rocking along. I am very dubious if ANY of these new tech TV's will be better…

  • I wonder if it will work through a fetch tv box, as in the fetch remote for sound control etc, my tcl 75 wont work with fetch handset

    • You need to have CEC for that. Check which HDMI you're using some set didn't have support for all of them. See if CEC is labelled, maybe even ARC labeling

      • No you don’t, it works as a universal remote via IR, just need the model to be on the list

  • I have more of a general question - do budget 60"+ TVs like this have VESA mount? Or is it a "premium" feature?
I need a rotating stand, can't imaging using a TV without it..

    • +1

According to the users manual here it does have VESA mount.

      • Its a large Vesa mount 400 × 200 and you'll need to spend a bit to get a stand that supports it.

    • +1

Budget computer monitors often skip the vesa mount still, however on a tv of basically any size it's almost guaranteed to have one these days regardless of budget level.

    • As in rotate to portrait?
      For gaming?

      • No, to rotate left and right.

        • that's swivel left right
          rotate is portrait or landscape
and then you have tilt up or down

but yeah, this has a VESA mount like most TVs these days, less common on monitors as Alzori said.

  • Is the QLED worth the +$50 compared to their other 64" 4k Ultra HD TV: https://www.bigw.com.au/product/eko-65-4k-ultra-hd-android-t…

Besides that and being "frameless" everything else looks the same?

    • …another thing being OOS

    • QLED is definitely worth $50 more.

  • +1

To users saying out of stock its a pretty useless comment without saying where!
    Still stock in SE QLD.
From previous EKO TV discussions they seem to use the same panel as Aldi's TVs so I'd expect Aldi to come out with a similar offer in the near future.

  • i dont think its out of the ordinary to see a TCL c715 (qled) for 1k at around November, if you can wait, its worth waiting, TCL will have the better overall tv and its worth 250 more.

  • added 5 to my cart for delivery from Mitchelton (4053)..says they have stock. If that helps anyone?

  • That’s cheap

  • Tempting to drive 50km to get one.

  • +2

Cheap crap TVs are cheap crap TVs. If you are interested in image quality, a great OS, good service and a proper guarantee, spend more and get an LG. Often great deals on last year's model. Current model 65 inch is as low as 1399 and at least twices as good as EKO etc. Get OLED if you can afford it and remember that QLED is marketing term designed to confuse consumers. QLED sets are just LCD TVs with LED backlights. OLED is a dramatic improvement.

    • +3

It's funny hearing people these days recommending lucky goldstar they had such a bad name some years back. They have obviously improved their products over time.

      • Didn't they change it to Life's Good?

  • Probably a TCL qled panel

  • +2

My parent's 50" Samsung Plasma is dying, 6 or 7 years of life for a $600 TV. Told her about this and they ordered it. Didn't want to spend much more than this. Thanks OP. Should be good enough for them!

  • What is everyone's thoughts on nabbing this TV or holding out for the Hisense 65Q8 to drop to $1500?

    • Definitely the Hisense over this TV but waiting for it to drop to ~$1500 be prepared to wait for a looooooong time.

      • +1

i say till nov for a q8 65" $1500 (we have seen 1638 last 3 weeks) although i should have just bought it, waiting for 5 extra months for a 138 dollar price difference is not worth it, its my ocd that made me wait longer, im still rocking a 10 year old 32" sony bravia for bedroom

        • Just get it if you need or want a new TV. There is no point in saving a couple of hundred bucks and wait near it gets superseded by a new model.

        • I feel you with that $1500 price point

  • added 5 to my cart for delivery from Mitchelton (4053)..says they have stock. If that helps anyone?

  • I've found a store with stock 150k away with delivery available, would they still deliver it do I need to be within certain radius?

  • +1

I purchased one today, yet to pick it up though. Feel free to ask me any questions and I'll get you an answer when I have it setup (hopefully today).

    • let us know what the picture quality is like.

  • I picked mine up today and just finishing setting it up… I have no complaints.
    Bargain!

    • what are you comparing it to? tell us about the blacks or lack thereof, the motion, the subtitles on a black background in netflix, does it have blooming?

      • +2

Watching the footy at the moment… will let you know soon

  • Anyone have any suggestions for ideal display settings? Brightness, colour levels, etc.

    • +1

For live tv (this is for my EKO 65" non-QLED)

      Backlight: 100
      Brightness: 55
      Contrast: 50
      Saturation: 40
      HUE: 0
      Sharpness: 5
      Gamma: Bright
      Colour Temperature: all 0
      Advanced Video
      DNR: Low
      MPEG NR: Low
      Adaptive Luma Control: Off
There's some auto contrast setting here for the QLED model that I turned off (can't remember the exact name)
      DI Film Mode: Off
      Blue Stretch: Off
      Game Mode: Off
      PC Mode: Off

For other inputs I have it the same but the saturation turned to 50, sharpness 10 and the noise reduction off.

  • The sound from these TVs is like being in a tin can, in the end you get what you pay for poor quality

  • Is anyone (who has already collected it) please able to measure the width of the stand? Just hoping to figure out if I will need a new TV stand. Much appreciated!

    • Width of the stands is approx 30~31cm.

      • Thank you! Appreciate the help :) Have a great week.

  • Anyone else having issues with their unit?
I picked up my unit yesterday and it was working fine.
Now when I turn my TV on today it loads the splash saying 'EKO | Android TV' but does not load the actual android menu, panel/remote does nothing..

I have the 75inch Frameless LED version.

    • +1

That doesnt sound good. You could try power off at wall for a few minutes, otherwise it'll be a return or do Big W give you in home service?
You could do a factory reset but for a 1 day old TV I'd just want it replaced.
Maybe ask the question in the 75" EKO thread https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/561530

  • +1

Bought this QLED for my friend. It has a lot more noticeable vignetting compared to mine (the previous EKO 65" Android TV) and the sound isn't as good (doesn't have bass/treble adjustments only equaliser in the main sound menu (even though the manual actually shows a screenshot with has bass/treble adjustment) which actually makes mine sound quite decent for a cheap TV). The frame isn't significantly thinner too.

    • thanks, will give this a miss, spend a bit more and get a tcl or samsung tu8000(not my best recommendation but cheapest samsung entry level tv will still shit on this one), and by a bit more i mean 450 more.

  • Can this be mounted on a wall?
Can't find a pic of the back

    • Yes

    • Vesa 400x200.
Mounting holes are on the lower third of the tv.

  • I have got 1 at NSW, will need my friend to come and help me to set that up.

  • Does this have the capability to download the BINGE app?

    • Yes.

  • I purchased the 75' UHD Frameless version from BigW a few days ago and already have major issues.

I've made a quick video demonstrating the issues faced (note this started happening the day after i received it); https://youtu.be/ItANqYy4H-w

Constant crashing, the TV starts does not start up 90% of the time and just goes to a black screen.

I'm returning my unit and would avoid purchasing one.

EDIT: Seems like another guy has reported a similar issue on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtpPYBNl8Fs
