What’s the purpose of a single edge safety razor? Why not double?

    • prevents uneven wear I guess? I have a straight razor setup that takes half a DE blade and it's trivial to just snap them in half, but I'd almost be worried about reduced weight and the balance of this model.

    • Something about no exposed blade on the rear of it during use i think. I know a lot of blokes who, despite using a safety razor, only use onside before rinsing the head. Having used the YAQI SE head myself (on a different handle) the reduced head weight changes how you shave as its handle biased. You can also buy half blades cheaper than standard blades, or Artisan Club blades. It all comes down to personal preference though

mach3 and a blade buddy … never looked back.

    • +7

How are them overpriced cartridges treating you?

      • I've tried others, nothing gets as good a shave. The blade buddy increases the longevity significantly.

        • Are they all the same, or can you recommend a Blade Buddy?

          • @[Deactivated]: Its just a lump of rubber - mine was literally just called blade buddy. But its great they really last about 5x as long.

        • Careful, you’ll antagonise the metrosexuals.

@Quarn: Hey, I'm no metrosexual! I'm a cheap git who prefers the old way of doing things as they cost next to nothing.

Mach3 is expensive, disposable and has 3 poor quality blades scraping on your skin
Safety razors will last you a lifetime, blades are cheap yet really good quality and you only have one blade passing through your skin which prevents irritation. You pass twice on your check that’s 6 razor blades with a mach3 vs 2 blades of a safety razor

I know you might say your skin doesn’t get irritation. I never got any visible irritation with a Mach 3. Then I tried a safety razor and I realised that I didn’t know what irritation means. It’s another world

      • Disposable ? Well the blades are, but the blades are for a safety razer ? So no difference.

"You pass twice on your check that’s 6 razor blades with a mach3 vs 2 blades of a safety razor"

        Sorry, what ?

I am tempted to try as everyone bangs on about them. But tbh all the yaqi seem to be rating 1/10 profile - which isn't appealing. And I lost intrest in search the website for a closer shave.

        • You will have to use a soap lather not shaving cream, you will cut your face up. Dove soap works
Also good blades to go with them, Feather blades are the sharpest on the market

          • @[Deactivated]: Soap ? Thats crazy, it will achieve the exact opposite of what you want to achieve.

            • @hotukdeals: Use olive oil, it makes shaving so smooth and my skin is in better condition than it ever was with other shaving concoctions. The basil infused stuff smells great!

        • +1

@hotukdeals More blades means more contact with your skin it’s not that hard to understand. If a razor have 5 blades and you go over the same spot twice, that’s 10 blades going over your skin. With the safety razor you pass twice and it’s just 2 blades going over the skin. It means a lot

        • mach3 and a blade buddy … never looked back.

          Nek minnit

        • What do you mean 1/10 profile?

The going by Razor heads, Beast 8-9/10, Slant 9/10, Grill 9/10, Katana 6-7/10, Closed Comb 5-6/10, Cobbled Comb 4-5/10, Fine Cobbled Comb 4-5/10, Flipside 3.5&5/10, Fence 3/4 or 7.5/10 and the Mellon is 1-2/10.

I've used; Beast, Katana, Closed Comb and Mellon, all of which gave a damn close shave with the Mellon probably being the most comfortable and closest of the lot.

          • @Wilkshire13: they are different numbers to the yaqi website eg https://www.yaqishaving.com.au/products/yaqi-katana-de-mello… so the katana shaft has a mellon head, but the katana razer is only available in single edge https://www.yaqishaving.com.au/collections/katana-se-razor/p… and it has profile 6-7.

I think the yaqi wesbite is shit.

            • @hotukdeals: The Yaqi Katana SE and the Katana Mellon are two different razors, though I get your confusions as they are both called "the Katana." this only refers to the handle style. The shave profile is entirely based on the geometry of the head, the handle is not going to impact that. I could chuck the beast head on the Katana handle and still get the same profile as the beast head on the Eden handle.

The website is not shit, your understanding of how the shave profile is applied is.

As for the Katana SE only being available in one handle variant, you are correct, they only sell it with one handle as a complete razor. However, there is nothing stopping you from buying the Katana head and one of the other handles. For instance, I own 4 Yaqi razor heads and one razor handle

            • @hotukdeals: Also mate, you're looking at the Katana Mellon, which has a shave profile of 1-2/10 as per my comment above

Beast 8-9/10, Slant 9/10, Grill 9/10, Katana 6-7/10, Closed Comb 5-6/10, Cobbled Comb 4-5/10, Fine Cobbled Comb 4-5/10, Flipside 3.5&5/10, Fence 3/4 or 7.5/10 and the Mellon is 1-2/10.

Yaqi's new naming convention for their razors is as follows: Handle Name + Head Name, i.e Katana SE, Katana Mellon, Eden Grill, Eden Mellon.

Some of the older razors don't follow this convention, such as the Portal, Quo, Classic, Godzilla and Stamford, as they only come with one head option as a complete razor.

@Wilkshire13: the website is shit, I am seriously considering buying one - but it won't be from there. So they lost a customer.

                • @hotukdeals: You're entitled to your opinion. Enjoy your new razor, where ever you buy it from

I used hate trying to rinse mach cartridges, with the DE, easy to rinse and doesn't clog.

Seems they also have cheap stainless steel razors
    https://www.yaqishaving.com.au/collections/eden-de-safety-ra…

I have a butterfy opening DE razor myself from Aliexpress, I will never go back to cartridges, not just for cost, but ease of rinsing.

    • Haven't tried the Eden yet, though I rate their other razors. Which butterfly DE do you have? I know Aldi had the Shick Butterly DE on sale as per this deal and it's identical to the Wilkinson Sword one, which was a great razor
