@koflok: not really. racism is you say or you do something bad about another race. i just said i saw many chinese and indian selling them. whats wrong with it? i have chinese and indian friends and i told them the same :D i think you need to look up what racism means

                    • +3

@behindmyego: I guess the question might be, why was it necessary to to point out ethnicity? Why not just saw you saw a bunch on marketplace?

                      • -1

@thefinalproblems: Whynot? And do I have to ask you next time if I wanna use indian or Chinese? They’re the most crowded countries in the world and have a huge population in here too. Stop being a keyboard hero and go outside a bit

                    • +3

@behindmyego: But you did imply something bad there and profile them as "many Chinese and Indian". There's no point of bringing race in there. Usually I'd say let's agree to disagree but you seem to be the type of person that needs to be educated in this matter. I would say you need to look up what racism means.

                    • @behindmyego: Also doesn't help that earlier in the thread you commented and said "Surprised you didn’t get for the whole family in India? 😂😂"

                      • -5

@thefinalproblems: It’s a crowded nation and known with their large families. What’s wrong with it? Trust me, I’m the last person who could be racist. Love everyone 😊 but you really need to learn what racism means. I’m very well educated thank you. You should maybe get educated cause you don’t even know how to use a simple website. One of my comments were “ 😂😂” and nothing else. Just 2 laughing emoji and I got a negative vote 😂 get your head out of your arse man. There is a whole world out there.

                        • @behindmyego: I doubt you are the last person to be racist. I think that would be a tall statement for anyone to make.

Are you sure I'm the one that needs to learn how to use a simple website? I'm not really sure what the second part of your rant was about or why it was aimed at me. You actually now have two negative votes to the laughing emojiis because I didn't give you the original one and the way I checked was by voting on the comment.

                          • -1

@thefinalproblems: I can imagine your mental status by giving 2 laughing emojis negative vote 😂

                            • @behindmyego: Your need to turn this discussion about the offensive nature of some of your comments into personal attacks only undermines your credibility even more. Just so you know, just because you have Chinese and Indian friends, doesn't mean you can't still be making remarks that come cross as racist or are racist.

It seems like when you can't make a valid point, you turn to insulting somone. Like user below, I will no longer be replying to you.

              • +1

@djoz: I saw someone on Gumtree in Perth advertising for $175. As soon as they read the price was a mistake and that it was meant to be $159, they dropped the price to $140. When i asked them why they were selling it they said it was because "they bought it a bit cheaper and I'm selling for a profit. We have a 1 year old, and my partner isn't working, so a bit of extra cash here and there. There's nothing wrong with it at all." - Such a coincidence that this happened to get posted just after this morning meaning that they definitely got it for $40 and are trying to resell it for 400% profit.

      • -3

Well as a price yes it is still good but would you let people make money like this? I won’t personally. I work my arse off to make an each dollar and people will make this without even moving finger?

        • +3

Technically going in (early) to the local Auspost, getting the stock and then finding a buyer is not exactly "without even moving (a) finger".

          • @koflok: it is mate. you buy all the stock without thinking of others and selling them for x3-4 times the price is just greedy and making an income without moving your finger. i can see your comments directly targeting me, shows that you are one of them using these hard times/deals to make profit and destroy the market. same as second hand car markets right now. you will see the effects of this in a few years but not even sure if you care actually. i am basically trying to describe a rainbow to a blind person here right now..

          • -1

@koflok: also as you can see the online shopping sites now, such an ebay, gumtree, marketplace, there are many profiteer just like yourself. thats the reason the economy is going down day by day. i could give you a whole lecture about it but as i said, it would be like describing a rainbow to a blind person. you dont have the capacity to understand..

            • @behindmyego: Well, I was pointing out the fact that doing all that is not technically "making an income without moving your finger". They did have to get up from their asses early to be able to profit from it. And no, unfortunately, I am not one of those people, I did get one early for myself though. Were you able to get any of the deal or is that why you seem so salty about the whole thing?

And I can see there are many people who try to profit from this. If you know your Economics 101, that's capitalism and how free-market economy works. There's room for profit to be made and they capitalize on that which yes in this instance unfortunately destroys the bargain - not market, as price will settle on an equilibrium set by the market. I disagree with that's what causing the economy to tank but unlike your racist comments earlier (which is the only other of your post I commented on btw), I'm happy to agree to disagree on this matter as we have different views on how the economy should work.

Fyi, resorting to personal attacks such as "you don't have the capacity to understand" in any well-mannered discussion will only make yourself seem desperate which makes your whole point invalid.

Anyway, this is my last reply to you as I don't want to be dragged down to this level of uneducated argument and before you feel like I am targetting you even further.

              • -4

@koflok: Yes I am being targeted by you as I can see all the neg votes I received from every comment I made, even the laughing emoji. Of course this is a free world and anyone can do anything. I respect that. But the problem is, did you buy one for yourself? Or did you buy a whole bunch to make profit? If you’re making profit, there is nothing illegal there. But is it ethical? This is just one example. I have been trying to buy a car for the last 2 months but can’t. You know why? Cause of the profiteers. Same as here same as everywhere. But it is my choice to raise my voice and tell people this as much as you have rights to buy a thousands of them. The reason I call you uneducated because you learn ethics, manners at a very early age. You clearly don’t have that and are trying to justify that getting up early in the morning and walking to a post office and buying a bulk and selling them 3 times its price is absolutely normal and doesn’t have any effect on economy.. As I said, nothing is illegal here but not ethical either. To be honest, if I buy 10 and sell them like people do, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night. Lucky you, you can..

            • -3

@behindmyego: Hahaha it’s because I am telling the truth and you profiteers keep giving me negative vote 😂 very nice guys.

        • Isn't that how cash rewards and shopback operate? They don't move a finger yet they make money….

  • Thanks OP! No hard drive or sd card at my local but got one of the phones for $40.

  • Anyone figured out where to enable the pattern unlock (the 9 dots) for the Y5 2019, i can only see password unlock and face unlock.

also if you look closely enough, you can tell it has a screen protection film already, or it's time for me to get to the SpecSavers?

    cheers.

    • +1

Saw an unboxing video which said the same. Phone comes with a screen guard prefixed on it. Now thats new.
      I saw it here: https://youtu.be/DWlpSpfTFKc

      • cheers mate. now i need to figure out where is the dot unlock thingy.

        • +1

          Settings>security & privacy>Lock screen password>change unlock method>pattern

          • @coolbuddy2k7: Thanks for the quick response, when i set up the phone, i was only presented with face unlcok and numeric password. i chose password.
now i went your per your settings, under LOCK SCREEN PASSWORD, i have 4 options:
            change password,
            disable password,
            secure lock settings
            smart lock

no change unlock method found:(, no it found any key word 'pattern'…
lol. this phone sure makes me work for it now that it's a super bargain:)

(i did apply the system update from Huawei/google)

            • +1

@Stickout: Just disable password and it should show up. Are you on EMUI 9.1.0 Security patch September 19 ?

  • yep did the disable enable password thing, no luck. when i did it, 2 options became avail. password and face unlock:),
    my android 'abut phone' section:
    build number 9.1.0.209(C636E6R3P1)
    emui verion:9.1.0
    android verison; 9
    patch level 1 September 2019

(when i first got the phone earlier today, i applied 2 pathcs under the system update option, maybe what's what got me undone, wouldn't have thought so though)

    cheers.

    • +1

Once you disable it, you need to follow this: Settings>security & privacy>Lock screen password>change unlock method>pattern

I just tried it & it works. I'm on same build as you are but someone mentioned earlier they got security patch August 2020. I'm not sure how though.

      • cheers mate, will try.

        • +1

          There’s an extra step. It’s:

          Settings>security & privacy>Lock screen password>Set lock screen password>change unlock method>pattern

          • +1

@Jaxx: I was just about to update the steps. Thanks for adding extra step 👍 How did you updated core software? I didn't updated my phone when I first set it up. After update it is saying my phone is up-to-date while security patch is still September 19

            • @coolbuddy2k7: yeah I had the same, kept saying "up-to-date" but then eventually popped up by itself.

            • @coolbuddy2k7: I didn't do anything special, I don't have an active SIM card either, so I think you just wait. I did open the Huawei App Gallery app, I didn't sign up though but it went and updated some Huawei apps.

            • +1

@coolbuddy2k7: @coolbuddy2k7 and @Jaxx, i did it with your instructions, finally, yay!
yeah i am slow on this and the "Change Unlock Method" was staring at me!

              just like what they sing:
no matter how far or how wide I roam
              I still call Ozbargain home:)

              cheers.

      • Can confirm the one I got has the Aug 2020 patch now.

        • Did you update it when you first set up your phone? Or is there anything else that needs to be done.

          • @coolbuddy2k7: Yeah I updated it, but i think it only went to sep 2019, even after manually attempting to check for updates. Then out of nowhere it asked to update.

            • @DamonT: Thanks for clarifying. Maybe I need to put sim card in it (not that I think it should matter).

              • +1

@coolbuddy2k7: The Aug 2020 update will eventually pop up in some hours/days. Or else, you may directly get a future Sep 2020 update, if there is one.

For those who missed in the comments, this phone has Band 28! The Model Number being given by Aus Post is AMN-LX2 which is Southeast Asia Version and includes Band 28 and Band 40 as well. So this phone has all 4G/LTE Bands required in Australia. This would also mean that you will get VoLTE if your carrier supports it (Prepaid: Boost Mobile, or Postpaid: All Major Telcos: Telstra, Optus, Vodafone)
    Ref: https://www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/AU/huawei-y5-20…

Also, this phone model AMN-LX2 does not have NFC. As per Huawei's official website, NFC is available only with AMN-LX1, however that model is only a 16GB variant and without Band 28. So a compromise on Storage/Band 28 against NFC.
    Ref: https://consumer.huawei.com/en/phones/y5-2019/specs/

Double the Storage and a Band 28 inclusion against NFC is what I would prefer, although each one's preferences may be different. To get all of them at this price point, is a again expecting a bit too much, so, happy with what I have now.

    • How does one confirm this? I mean I have a Telstra SIM…if it shows up as 4G does that mean it's using band 28?

      • +2

Not necessarily. Telstra uses the following 4G Bands:
        700MHz (B28)
        900MHz (B8)
        1800MHz (B3)
        2100MHz (B1)
        2600MHz (B7)

Band 28 or 700 MHz is quite popular in Australia as it is widely used by all Telcos and gives strong 4G coverage "indoors". If you are in the city, it may not be Band 28, but if in rural areas, it is likely to be Band 28. It doesn't make much of a difference - your phone latches on to the best 4G band available at any location. However, it most likely points that for VoLTE to work, you need Band 28. If you are on Telstra Prepaid, you wont get VoLTE as the Telcos provide VoLTE only on Postpaid Plans.

You may be already knowing this, but in VoLTE, the voice is carried over 4G network and so, you internet doesn't fall back to 3G/H+ during a call. VoLTE may be identified by a small icon stating "VoLTE" beside the network bars in Android phones. For iPhone, you may just observe if you network falls back to 3G when you are on a connected call.

        Ref: https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/Will-my-ph…

        • Thanks for this info.
I made a call using the Y5 on my Boost prepaid and it dropped down to 3G, the same SIM in my iPhone, the 4G icon is maintained during a call. So it seems I'm getting VoLTE on iPhone but not on the Y5.

          • +1

@Jaxx: Yes, VoLTE is also dependent on the firmware on the handset; and if the Operator supports it for that handset.

I was hoping that it would work on the Y5 though, do you get the VoLTE option in SIM Settings in the Y5 with Boost Prepaid?

            • @djoz: I didn't see any settings regarding VoLTE, only settings to choose which SIM mobile data defaults to and a switch for Dual SIM 4G.

  • Did anybody try rooting this device? Any success?

  • None of the 2TB hard drives in stock at AusPost @ Morayfield shopping centre, however the system showed 2 at Hamilton and 1 at Sunshine Plaza. The Sunshine Plaza one is now being store transferred to Morayfield for me. So they can transfer stock if you are not near to Hamilton PO. Go get them!

  • Tried my local post shop in Wollongong (no stock) and they just have the 1.5T and 4T WD elements (which I assume is the replacement). I tried a couple of LPOs and they either don't stock this stuff at all or also don't have any old stock (and LPOs being private generally have much lower stock levels and move things a lot more quickly..)

I tried to phone the 13 number but it was a 45 minute wait time.. (it's always a 30+ minute wait time, I've never gotten through).

So still looking for a 2T if I can find it.. but doubt I will.

  • There are currently TWELVE of these phones on Gumtree nationwide, all listed in the past week, so they are clearly OzBargain pick-ups.

Asking prices range from $100 (firm) to $200 (neg).

Two of the sellers have multiple phones to sell - North Ryde (NSW) and Risdon Vale (TAS).

    • Daaaaaaaaamn! This was bound to happen. The Website limits "2 per customer", although the deal was never live on the website. Aren't the purchase limits applicable in-store as well? Many people have hoarded like 5 phones, just to sell and make a quick buck.

On a side note, how many people actually look for such new phones on Gumtree? Is it a good amount of people who are scouting for these on Gumtree, although the specs aren't that great? Or do they just do it for a secondary phone, or for parents/children?

      • This is such a "low profile" phone (I'd never heard of it until last Sunday!), and a year old, that I doubt anyone would be looking especially to buy it? People might do a general search with some filters (eg. Android phone, new condition, <$120) and it would show in those search results. I'll check back in a few weeks and see how many are still for sale.

        • True that! I wouldn't buy it either. Never for $199, not even for $159 as it retails now on AusPost Website.

Like I mentioned, its just that probably some peeps might buy for Parents / Children / Nephews / etc. who dont really need a high-end phone. Some of the guys here did buy 3 from AusPost - just to give to their loved ones. Well, that's a good way of taking advantage of such deals. But yeah, selling them to make a quick buck - I have no comments there.

I'd too be interested in knowing how many are still available on Gumtree a few weeks later. Probably the price will drop to $90. Lol, rather keep the phone than sell it for just $50 profit.

          • @djoz: Am curious of your impressions of the phone, now you have had it for a few days.
Are you happy with it? Any glaring issues?

  • As per Aus Post, this phone comes with 2 years manufacturers warranty. Is that correct? Do we get 2 years with this phone?

  • Wow prices keep going up, 2x bacon deluxe now $9.95 but yeah yummy umm bacon 😃👍

    • +1

      Boy, you're very hungry.

  • I’ve been using the phone and it’s not bad. Phone calls are clear. Camera is average. General speed is fair with occasional pauses. It is very light, feels too light perhaps, the back is quite slippery so I don’t feel like I can get a good grip, a case would fix this but not worth it for a 40 dollar phone😂
