  • looking for a beyerdynamic deal

  • The AKG K702 is good for competitive shooters and acoustic/live music due to the bright signature, wide soundstage and good imaging, and the rest I'd probably skip over in favour of options like:

    • the AKG K371
    • the Sennheiser HD6XX (though that's an issue for local stock)
    • the HiFiMAN Sundara (over the AKG K712)
    • Any good deals on the sundra? Would you recommend any other planars? I've been interested in getting a set and own the 712 already.

The Sundara has come down from USD $500 in its time to $350, which I suppose is a deal in of itself, but the only way I've seen deals on it is via:

eBay AU, via HiFiMAN's US store, when there's a nice site-wide code: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HIFIMAN-SUNDARA-Over-Ear-Planar-…

Addicted to Audio with a 10% off sale (I'd imagine the marked price will drop when they get stock in again): https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/products/hifiman-sundara-magn…

Amazon via US (would combine nicely with vouchers, payment discounts and cashbacks): https://www.amazon.com.au/HIFIMAN-Headphone-Audiophiles-Comf…

Amazon seems the best shot as we've not seen better than 10% sitewide on eBay for a while. The record low I'm aware of (aside from stores permanently clearing their stock) has also been on Amazon US, where their algorithm briefly dropped it down to USD $299.

The other high-value planar I'd look at is the Takstar HF-580 on AliE, from either the TakstarAudio or Takstar Official stores. With the right sale, and cashbacks/coupons, you're looking at a final price of $160-$200, then you can grab Sendy Aiva v2 (perforated) pads from Taobao for about $25. But it's no Sundara.

Maybe the Fostex T50RP MK3 on Amazon AU via UK if you're feeling like doing more extravagant pad swapping and tuning, but that's another step down from the Takstar in terms of overall FR and performance, and I'm not that familiar with it, so expect planar timbre to be an issue at that point.

Much longer term, I expect the Sundara (or a variation of it) to replace the HE-400 series as the entry level HiFiMAN option. Even the HE-400i 2020 edition now competes directly with the HE-4XX from Drop.

    • Monolith M570 will beat all the headphones mentioned above in terms of price and sound quality.

      • I've mentioned the Takstar HF-580 in a follow-up post (above your reply), it uses the same driver as the M570, one that's also used in the SendyAudio Aiva and the BLON B20. From what I understand of each tuning, the HF-580 is basically identical to the M570, but both still sit behind the HD 6XX and the Sundara from the perspective of overall presentation and timbre.

The only other one from that family of planars I would bother with is the BLON B20, but nowhere near its current price, more like where the M570 is priced these days ($300ish). With the HD6XX often at $270 when in stock, and the Sundara at $450-$500 when things line up, the M570 doesn't really hold up value wise.

The HF-580 represents outstanding value at around $180 (with cashbacks and coupons via AliE), gets good mileage out of the Aiva perforated pads ($25 from Taobao), but it's not in the same tier as the other two purely on performance.

Its one outstanding quality compared to those two is the bass doesn't roll off, but the driver also has resonance issues in 700-900 Hz range that can be tricky to correct for if they appear (hence why the Aiva and the BLON models started out so expensive).

IMO, you should only bother with the M570 because you're set on that driver and you don't want to deal with AliE should you run into any issues with an order.

  • Any deal for M40X or M50X?

    • Go grab the AKG K361 or the AKG K371, each is an upgrade on the M40X and the M50X respectively.

They should be about $120 and $150 each in the Prime Day sales next month, but you can get them for $140 and $195 from Amazon UK today, if you like.

Don't get the K361 BT, they compromise on the sound both in bluetooth and wired.

great price for the sennys, i have a pair, they're really good.

    • I just ordered mine, been waiting for deals on 58X or 6XX but this will do for me.

There's literally no Sennheiser x Drop stock in Australia, probably because Addicted to Audio won't pony up to meet a minimum order quantity. Sennheiser should just tell Drop to make their system active for Australia again until AtA are prepared to pay for stock.

The HD6XX should be discounted on Drop in the next 6-10 weeks, and even with a freight forwarder, it'll wind up under $300 easily.

  • (profanity) it, time to buy my 7th pair of headphones this year.

  • anyone recommend something similar but closed back? I don't need noise cancelling, but also dont need those around me hearing my music

    • Beyer Dynamic DT 770 ;)

      • Thanks, I'll check them out
