Unlimited Online Backup $69.95 for 2 Years (20% off)

170

Not sure if bargain hunters would buy online backup given an external hard drive is only $49 but this is probably the best deal I have found among the more 'reputable' online backup companies.
Currently I have about 70GB uploaded.
Another plus for me is that their backup software is one of the few that supports Linux.
You also get unlimited versions (a history) of your files.

This is a good deal, I wish I had decided to move to cloud based backup last year. Take it from someone who lost years worth of data to flood damage, this stuff is priceless.

  • I had been searching for online storage providers for the last few weeks.
CrashPlan is fantastic and made it to my final two and this is a great deal.

My only caution is that they have access to your data… Whatever that means to you, keep it in mind.

(Incase you were wondering… "SpiderOak" was the other one I have been looking at - Much more secure, slightly less friendly GUI though. A student account will cost you $50 per year per 100Gb).

The Crashplan software supports a 'data key' in the client which encrypts the data before it leaves your PC - so in theory the Crashplan staff can't read your data.

      • I use Crashplan myself and we resell for clients with the PROe version.

You can secure your data a couple of ways, by default it uses your account password however you can provide a separate password for the data encryption OR go a step further and provide a custom key entirely which never leaves your machine.

        See here:
        http://www.crashplan.com/business/support/doku.php/reference…

That's for the PRO client but applies to the consumer one as well. So you can completely secure your data if you are paranoid.

  • OP - This is a better link:

Also note that it is only for new customers (those without a crashplan+ account already)
AND the two year option is actually for 25.5 months… So it works out to be ~$2.65 per month.

(PayPal current rates puts $71.99US at $68.00AU)

  • If they did auto backups of gmail accounts i'd be on this like a rat on a used napkin.

    • Well you could run mailstore home and then backup that to Crashplan…

    • Why would you need to backup cloud based e-mail?

      • You can't really rely on a free service to offer you 0% loss.. If you had to absolutely need your emails then of course you'd get a backup option.. Also, gmail has been known to go down from time to time, so if there was an extended outage, you'd be stuck..

  • Adding my recommendation. Bought a four year plan in April for US$140 as a Mozy refugee after Mozy hiked their prices. Crashplan hasn't missed a beat - I have 145 GB backed up. It also does local backup and you can offer your PC as a backup point for friends and family for free.

  • Got 4 year sub… Very useful… Took a while for me to get the first backup up, 160gb… However since then it's run silently in the background … So far only needed to recover a few files.

    • i found the upload speed would average around 300-500kbps - which isn't very high - I guess thats how they guarantee 'unlimited' backup. So it took around 9 days to upload 70GB.

      • how about the download speeds when you have to recover files?

        • restore maxes out my link (12Mb/s)

  • Geez.. I wonder how long it would take to upload about 10Tb.. Hmmm..
Might need to wait for NBN..

    • You might be dead from old age.

      • I'm surprised he isn't from all that porn.

    • there was some guy on the crashplan forums who uploaded 2tb over about 4-5 months. Must have got faster upload than I did.

  • I don't get it .. all I see is a 2yr plan for $89.99 USD…?

    • Same here

Edit: ahhh.. i just worked it out… You MUST use the gift subscription link to get a 20% discount…

  • A good deal …if you don't live in Australia. Or Canada.

  • I got excited as I'm looking for a way to sync constantly 40gb of music between 3 PCs, but this is just backup. It's weird, using services like Dropbox would set you back $100 a year for 50gb, which I think is a bit ridiculous.

  • Great company used them for ages and many many friends now use it too.
They are also meant to be opening an office in Sydney soon so to seed large backups to the by sending in a hard drive will be possible soon for your initial backup

  • Does it do flat file backups only or does it backup OS and files?

    • Can backup whatever files you want for the most part. You pick the folders it backs up.

      • But can it backup and restore OS images?

        • Only if you provide the image as a file..

Crashplan is purely a file backup app. So if you want to do an image level backup of your machine you'll need something else to take the image first.

Where Crashplan excels is backing up huge data sets of files due to its realtime monitoring AND block dedupe. Put it this way Commvault only recently got client side dedupe, crashplan has had it for years.

        • Thanks for the info. Gees, Commvault must be a bit behind…Symantec BE has had dedupe for a couple of years.

        • Commvault has had dedupe for ages as well but it has been on the server/media agent end not the client. They only introduced client side dedupe in version 9.

But the issue is that backup exec and commvault are hideously expensive..
