Royal Australian Mint AC/DC Seven Coin Collection $110 + Delivery @ Royal Australian Mint

247

The R.A.M has just announced the issue of a limited edition 7 piece AC/DC collector set of 7 x 20c coins in a special holder. From the RAM website:

"AC/DC fans will feel like they’re on a highway to hell if they miss out on snapping up a Royal Australian Mint coin collection commemorating milestone anniversaries of six of the band’s album releases. This year marks 45 years since the iconic rock legends put out their debut album High Voltage. This cupro-nickel colour print collection is designed to shoot to thrill and features a bonus limited edition coin"

The issue is limited to 30,000 sets and based on past AC/DC editions will sell out very quickly. Scalpers are already listing the sets on eBay at ridiculous prices.

If you are an AC/DC fan and want a set then get straight from the mint while you can.

This seems really cool for collectors, however it isn't a "bargain" unfortunately.

    One for the forums.

    • -4

I would suggest that if you are a fan/collector of AC/DC memorabilia then paying $110 at the source, rather than an inflated price from a scalper definitely qualifies as a "bargain"

      • +5

        This is not a deal.

      • -2

Looks like you are paying $110 to get $1.40 back.

  • I understand the value to collectors but wow, buying $1.40 of coins for $110.

    • +1
    • +5

Perhaps, but then again that's the same as saying "wow, buying paints worth $10 for the Picasso painting and paying $5 million!"
We are talking about the collector value, not the intrinsic value

      • +3

Yeah as I said, I understand the value to collectors but for me as an average guy, it seems crazy. Cool coins though

      • -3

I appreciate you are new but encourage you to review other listings on this place and post accordingly.

  • -2

What greedy bastards. Selling us $1.40 for $110 and can't even throw in free shipping.

    • +4

      comes in a box….
      .

  • There's an eBay seller in Sydney listing it for $250… With "7 already sold" but I can't confirm whether or not that is true, my eBay skills are outdated.

    • i did a quick search & there were plenty of sold listings for $199…

  • Why would someone buy them on ebay for $200 rather than from the mint for $110?

    • +2

Because they do not realise they can buy direct from the mint - hence the reason for my post

  • Some poor guy who’s name rhymes with poor mint! 😇

  • +2

Delivery cost? Its a long way, to the shop, …

  • +5

    'limited to 30,000 sets'

    Hardly a limited edition then

  • +1

    Pull it down OP .
You might OZB it and I'm still working on names .
    Only 2.5K of the 30K left :)
My tip is buy $20 + extra to get free postage at $350 .
    Max of 3 unfortunately .

I'm a numismatist. I read the comments in this and totally get that people feel that way.

This won't appeal to them. But damn, it appeals to me.

You can't take a collectors coin on monetary face value. You take it for intricacy of the die and the work involved, the new technologies being employed to mint it, the presentation (box, PNC, sleeve etc) and mass appeal. This collection has enormous mass appeal and will sell out before you know it. Whilst I agree this is not a bargain as it is RRP, that RRP won't last long as it will have been purchased to onsell at highly inflated prices. That is the nature of the hobby.

And btw, for the person who mentioned it, 30k isn't a huge mintage. For something with such huge market appeal, it's actually really, really low.

    • +3

It’s not really really low for a collector coin. Pretty standard mintage for a mass appeal non precious metal collector coin is 30K. If the mint gets greedy they will do 40K and hence you see those coins/sets usually not appreciate much if at all.

Btw it’s only the 7th coin and the complete set with 30000 “mintage”. The other 6 individual coins say the mintage is “unlimited”.

Agree with the sentiments on why this was posted when it is at RRP. We do not know the true aftermarket value trajectory until after it sells out (if it does sell out the 30K mintage limit). Plus, it’s a 20c coin and not $2 coin ;-)

    • Do you have any tips for coin valuations? Are the prices on eBay generally unreliable and opportunistic?

      • +2

A proper valuation would come from the likes of Renniks or Greg McDonald. They publish valuations but these come sometime after release.

eBay prices generally are speculation in the short term with fluctuations as buyers get FOMO. Over the longer term prices do stabilise and can spike and this starts reflecting the true market value due to factors like demand, the coin winning an award, scarcity, final mintage numbers, etc.

If you are buying as an “investment” IHateFrasierCrane provided some good tips above. However as with anything that has market over intrinsic value you are basically making an educated guess as to whether it will go up in value or not. You won’t get everything correct but if you have been collecting for a fair while you will start to have an idea of what will and won’t appreciate in value.

I for one think this set has a fair chance of appreciating but it will only happen in the short term after it sells out. What may hold it back is the mintage and the fact they are 20c coins in a set (usually set coins receive higher denominations such as 50c or $1). Longer term who knows but it may not go the same way as the 2018 ACDC coins as they were the pioneer theme and had even lower mintage.

Sellout may take a little while given its mintage and i think the Mint has deliberately set the mintage this high so all collectors who are interested may be able to secure one before it sells out. If the set was 10000 mintage or below I would have said this will definitely appreciate and sell out very quickly.

Well considered and strongly agree @abc

        • Thanks abc!

  • RRP, no deal listed.

Cool little item though, nowhere near worth $110, but cool.

  • Whilst this might be an attractive collectable for fans of AC/DC, I fail to see how this is a deal at RRP. Sorry OP.

Haters going to hate, it’s ok to post rx3080 pre orders for rrp or new iPhone 12 at rrp ( will be posted next week I bet) and other stuff but not coins

    • +2

Don't think these coins will run Crysis…

    • +1

That’s a good point, and mod’s enforced the rule of “let the community decide“

    • +3

You're assuming the same people voting negative here liked the 3080 post.

    • +1

or the rrp Switch which got lots of upvote. ppl who downvote simply it is not in their interest so not qualify for them as a deal… mehh

    • Xbox & PS5 pre-orders..

      More RRP examples..

  • +2

    Thx for the heads-up OP.

I sorta collect coins & who doesn't luv a bit of Acca Dacca.?

Purchased an extra set to flog & recoup some $$$, hopefully.

    p.s. Haters gonna hate…

They churn out these collections like Ooshies for adults ;-) Anyone still want to buy Coles Little Shop? They are put up in hope for crazy prices too. Everyone hoping for another sucker to pay more. Sad thing is for max value they are best left in a draw untouched. (From an ex-stamp and coin collector as a kid)

  • +1

thanks op. bought a set myself earlier today.

  • +1

I ordered my boxes in the morning. This is not a bargain but will be a bargain.

  • Interesting that they've given Queen Elizabeth a pearl necklace on the head side of the coin. A shot in the dark perhaps?

  • 20 Cent coins …. :/

    That's a bit disappointing

    But I had to have a set…or 2 :)

  • +1

So I didn't need these, but bought a set anyway. It's not technically a "bargain" unless comparing it to Ebay scalpers, but it's cool and is perfect for my kid's birthday (huge AccaDacca fanboy). Thanks OP, ignore the negs!

  • Rrp

    • The last RRP I bought 2 times ( yeah wish I could have gone more but 1 limit per person) getting hit by negs made $100 X 2 .
They forgot to teach in Kindergarden market value :)

BTW 1349 left no RRP by tomorrow .

      • How do you know the numbers?

  • -1

Picked up a set. Thanks OP.
    Ignore the negs
