It's been a while since the last decent deal on this TV (when I missed out on the last awesome Appliance Central deal). This TV looks like the best budget 4K HDR experience by a long shot for this price range.

I bought this TV last time it was around this price and I'm very happy with it. I would have liked another HDMI port or two but I can get by at the moment

    • +2

      Get a $10 3 port hdmi switch.

  • +1

Excellent TV, the OS is lackluster so its good to have an Android TV box if u want something other than YT/Netflix/Prime/Stan

    • +1

This. The picture quality is great with FALD. It doesn't support Kayo, DIsney+ and the OS is quite slow. Maybe get a new Chromecast as well.

      • +1

Oh yeah, I should have mentioned I run mine with a Shield Pro so I haven't had those issues

  • -1

You can get a Sony 65 9000 for $250 more.

    • +10

      Where?

      • +2

        GG 3 weeks ago.

        • +13

How do I go back in time to 3 weeks ago please?

          • +2

            @Agarwal: DeLorean

          • +3

@Agarwal: There's a deal on at the moment for a time machine, it's via DJs though who won't tell you the stock levels, and you'll have to use gift vouchers and a commercial account that you can get via a Norwegian superfund (and you just need to supply proof of 5 Xiaomi products you haven't opened yet)

    • I would also like to know where you can get it at this price.

    • -1

It was $2,038 the other day, so $342.25 more. Not sure where it can be had for only $250 more. But either way I think it's worth spending a little more on the Sony.

      • I paid $1900 for the 9000H so $200 more.

        • +1

          Where at?

          • @BeerCrisp: Sony Kiosk

      • $1950 delivery at GG 3 weeks ago.

  • +3

    How bout a 85” ?

  • +5

Very happy with my 900$ eko 75 inch frameless Big W Android tv :)

    • Do they not do them anymore? Just looked on the site, couldn't see them. Only a 55"

      • +1

I bought it last month when it was on special price

    • That’s like free all u can eat sushi that’s gone off……

Excellent review here from Vincent of the UK equivalent model.

    https://youtu.be/RdL_1kFg2hw

Worth noting that due to a number of severe picture processing issues he doesn’t recommend the TV, even for casual viewers.

    • Was tossing up between Q8, Samsung Q80T or X9500H. I was going to choose the Q8 since I don't care about Hdmi 2.1, but I'm not sure which one anymore

      • +7

Sony X9000H is the value pick this year. Anyone wanting to spend more should just step up to OLED.

        • +2

The X9500H better than the X9000H according to rtings especially if you don't care about Hdmi 2.1?

          • @chathy: Yeah I'm opting for the X9500H when there's a sale (hopefully black Friday)

          • @chathy: It’s definitely better. Brighter, better local dimming, better picture processing, wide viewing angle technology.

      • +1

X9500H for sure - better local dimming and upscaling + Dolby Vision + android TV

Q80T has better gaming features (4K120 and VRR) hence the higher rtings score but you might as well do the X9000H since it would be quite a bit cheaper than for only slightly less performance

If you have no budget then LG CX which will give you the best of everything - colour/contrast, viewing angles and gaming features (burn-in is debateable)

        My picks for 55"/65":
        1.6k/2k - X9000H
        2.5k/3k - X9500H
        2.5k/3.5k - LG CX

        • +1

Q80T has some pretty nasty gaming mode bugs. It achieves its ~10ms latency by disabling or severely limiting image processing features like FALD, essentially destroying the picture. As a Q80T owner, I wouldn't recommend it especially for gaming. The higher rtings score has kind of shaken my faith in them. The X9500H performs just as well in gaming mode as regular mode with only an extra 5ms latency (negligible).

          • +1

@breen2016: The RTINGS scores are absolute crap as you have discovered. They don't even mention issues like the severe degredation of local dimming in game mode.

Their local dimming tests are just the standard white object on black background and they assign it a "score". It's worthless.

Only use RTINGS to quickly compare measurements. Do not use their scores. If you want buying advice look at detailed reviews by professionals such as HDTVtest, flatpanelsHD and AVForums.

        • Really hope we see the 65" X9000H go on sale for closer to that 1.6k mark eventually.

          • @XVX: That's staff price if you know anyone who works there.

            • @whitlam: Staff get the 65" for around 1.6k?? I'm about to go start making friends with the people from TGG if that is the case.

              • @XVX: Sorry, should have said Sony staff.

I have the 55" Q8. Been very happy with it overall, but it does take some serious tweaking to get it working well. Most of the preset smooth motion modes are garbage, luckily there's a custom mode where you can adjust the settings until it doesn't look like a Mexican soap opera. I think the review is a bit harsh, if you're on a budget this tv is pretty damn hard to beat.

      • TheFunkySalsa.I just scored the 55"Q8 myself on the weekend ($655 last one..display model). If you could share the settings you found were a good tweak ….may save me a bit of time fiddling…🤭..
        thanks in advance.

        • $655??? They're around $1400 discounted at the moment, how did you get it for $655?

If you go into the picture settings, they have presets for the smooth motion control like Cinema, Sports, etc. Scroll past that rubbish to Custom and just mess with the controls there until you get a natural look to the movement. Be sure to set the picture control to All Inputs or whatever as then you don't have to mess with each one individually.

I also cranked up the local dimming, and I also kinda like putting the gamma to 2.0. It blows out the highlights though so you'll need to dial back the contrast if you do that.

Contrast and backlighting are actually pretty good at 50. Also make sure your TV is set to Home and not Shop settings if it was a display.

          • +1

@TheFunkySalsa: I'm dumb and suffering from old man syndrome… it was the 58" S5 4K…Doh!.

But to be fair we've are pleased with it so far. Much appreciate your prompt reply and will play with the settings as suggested. 🙏

            • @totally munted: No problem at all mate, I was about to go have a rant at The Good Guys for screwing me on the TV 😂. I'm not sure if your telly will have the same options as mine but good luck with getting it the way you want it.

  • What’s the main pros are of Q8 against R7?

  • If you have a Costco membership, the 75" TCL (75P715) is $1729.99

    • +1

TCL are getting good reviews these days… worth a look at that price.

      • Yeah I'm thinking about the QLED TCL tv, since I have good guys commercial access. I had a look at costco's c715 65" and Good guys commerical's C815" and it's only about $30 difference for the higher end model that comes with onkyo speakers. Since I don't have a soundbar.

    • $1543 on Good Guys Commercial.

      • It's $1,995 on my Good Guys Commercial?

        • you are looking at the wrong product?

        • For the TCL 75P715 I am talking about.

          • +1

@bym: Yeah that's my bad, sorry didn't read the comment you were replying to

  • Ordered this last Wednesday and it arrived Friday. Good deal and great TV.

  • Waiting for black Friday.. mate got 65 inch RU7100 for $995 last year and it's pretty decent quality

    • RU7100 isn't a bad entry level TV, but it's not in the same ballpark as the Q8

The Q8 is a mid-high end LCD TV with full local dimming, 1000nits brightness, wide colour gamut, QLED, 100hz, Dolby Vision HDR, JBL front firing speakers etc, none of which the Samsung has

The Q8 is more equivelant to the Samsung Q80T which is around $2700 for the 65"

      • I ordered 75q8 from appliance online and found the x9000h on gg commercial for similar price so I cancelled the q8 last fri and put an order in for the Sony. Was that a good move?

        • +2

On paper the Q8 is better and has more local dimming zones (100 vs 32 on the Sony) and higher peak brightness (1000nits vs 700nits), but the X9000H is it a better overall package for the same price

Better upscaling, snappy android system and gaming features such as VRR and 4k120, as well as having the Sony reliability (not to say Hisense is bad, just not as well known)

Sony is also known to have the best execution of local dimming on the market

I would've done the same as you

          • @blonky: agree with above, having said that hisense has a good warranty as they are relative newcomers to australian market with 3years, if using credit card you can potentially get up to 5 years wty

  • +2

Any good offers for TVs with HDMI 2.1?

  • Anyone who has this, recommend for watching sport majority of the time?? (I'd be looking at 55' model)
Can't stand any ball trailing etc.
Currently still using plasma, most look at haven't come close

  • +1

I feel for the folks who drop $1700 on a tv, only to find the OS kinda doesn't work properly.

    • most people will have a streaming device anyway like google/apple tv/nvidia shield so the OS is kind of irrelevant

    • Every LCD TV I've had has worked better on the original software than any of the subsequent updates. I raised lots of well described faults with Samsung and others but they all ignore them as they are only interested in packaging new software for the new models. Regulators do nothing to manage modern consumer troubles, and the manufacturers make hay for decades (before someone eventually wakes up).

Consumers accept bugs and infantile software design like an open sewer accepts industrial pollution. And it's getting worse. Yet the people running these global corps still get caught embezzling all the money they can because a world of consumer cash isn't enough(?). And we think the solution… is where, the cause was… it's a shitshow where what's good enough for the average consumer to be relieved of their cash and left high and dry is somehow okay.

If you buy this TV make sure you install the FRC patch posted on the Whirlpool forums. It fixes some problems (e.g. screen blanking in dark scenes).
