Another cheapest price ever on this fast 3.5" drive. Gets around 244mb/s read/write speeds, so a bit faster than the other WD external drives which get about 180-190mb/s.

Listing says it comes with 3 months of game pass ultimate (worth $47.85) but i saw one review on the site which said their code had expired. But if that's the case i'm sure you could complian to Amazon.

As pointed out below, these likely contain a HGST Ultrastar DC HC520, which is a $600 drive if you want to shuck it.

Got this last deal (for a lot more :'( ). Warning if you want to use it for xbox it does not power off when xbox is shutdown, it keeps spinning up every minute making noise!

    • Oh really that's odd. I saw some reviews say the drive is noisey, others say it's very quiet.

How have you found it? I know it won't be completely silent being a mechanical drive.

      • +1

Yea, its quite loud. Not that noticeable when the xbox is on as it also makes some noise. But when everything is off and the drive keeps spinning its quite annoying!

    • +1

Did you go into the settings to make external drives turn off when not in use?

      • Sure did, no effect.

Also tried completely shutting down the Xbox instead of "Instant On", no difference.

I haven't tried a different "powered" external drive so can't say if this happens with all of them. Only ever tried 2.5" USB drives.

    • How do you stop it from constantly spinning then? Just unplug it while it’s still spinning?

      • It spins up every minute or so, not constantly.

I turn off/sleep the xbox, then wait a few seconds and unplug the USB from the xbox.

  • can this be used for PC?

    • Yes, it's just a standard external hard drive. You may need to format it.

Don't forget shucking… This one may have a Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC520 12TB HDD which is a $600+ HDD.

    • 12tb is an insane amount of store for 300 odd bucks.

I cant fit 3.5" drives in my SFF case but I curious to see how people go shucking this one.

  • +1

    This or Elements?

    • Depends what you want.

This is faster being a 7200 rpm drive, gets about 240mb/s vs 180mb/s on the Elements drive. But the Element is cheaper.

If you will use the gamepass i would get this as it come down to $267.74 for this.

I'm assuming the gamepass is for new accounts only?

        • +1

I'm pretty sure this can be used with existing accounts. It's usually only if its a 14 day or 1-month thing which is for new accounts.

          • @BillyG687: I hope so. I already thought I had got a bargain, that would be a hell of a bonus 🙂

        • Got this last deal, works on existing accounts.

  • +1

I presume you can use this with the One series X?

    • Only to store your Xbox series X / Xbox one games. You'll need to transfer Xbox series x (next-gen) titles from this to the internal SSD to actually play the games. However, you can play Xbox One and backward compatible games straight from this drive

    IMPORTANT NOTE

I read an article recently which said only the new Xbox Series X drives can play Xbox Series X games. These drives can only be used to install and play Xbox One games… I'll find the link…

    EDIT Found the link: https://press-start.com.au/news/xbox/2020/10/11/a-closer-loo…

Can store but not play XBox Series X games on these devices.

Bought 2 in the last deal, 3 more here, 5 drives for a nas, great deal.

  • +3

I'd buy this instead of the 14TB deal, this simply looks better.

  • The 5tb black is also on sale today it seems. About $160, though it is the slower write speed compared to this. Not bad if you can’t justify the cost of this one. I just bought the smaller one for backing up of game pass games etc and hoping to continue it over to series x……..if I can get one between release and Christmas anyway!

This 12tb disk is fantastic. Wasted on typical users like us, but great for heavy multi-user environments.

  • Can I use this driver as-is to store and play media files? Or is this just xbox games and I have to reformat it to use it?

    • It's just a hard drive, so you can use it for anything really. You probably will need to re-format it for Windows, but that takes no time at all.

For xbox, my understanding is external drives can be used for Games or Media, but not both.

      • Thanks!

  • Does this drive need the tape mod applied if used in a PC with a standard PSU?

    • +1

      Depends on your PSU.
If the drive won't spin up, then the answer is yes.

  • Yeah bought one couldn't resist. SSDs aren't large enough yet, it's annoying to run out of space on the things. 250Mb/s will still load games pretty fast.

  • Has anyone had their drive from this deal ship yet? Im still waiting

    • No mine hasn't even shipped. Will take a while.

      • Mine shipped on Friday 16 October from Amazon facility in Rochester Kent GB.

        • I dont really care that mine is taking ages to ship….Im just scared they will cancel it :/

          • @DanielP2: Don't worry mine shipped yesterday. This really was a terrific deal.

    • Looks like I'm getting mine tomorrow.

      • Gotem. All three WD120EMFZ-11A6JA0, firmware 81.00A81. Nice MacOS program, DriveDx is. And Helium, baby!

  • +3

Mine arrived today, I paid extra for faster shipping. I can confirm I got a HC520 HDD. Bloody stoked.

    • Awesome news, cant wait to rip mine apart :P

Mine shipped on Thursday and hit Perth on Friday. Still hasnt cleared customs yet. Im just glad its shipped :)
Did you receive your 3 months of Gamepass? and if so did you try redeeming it?

      • I did receive the code, and I did try redeeming it. Code worked, but I already had a subscription, so I'm not totally sure it gave me 3 months free.

        • crap, thats what i was worried about :/

          • @DanielP2: On the positive side, the HDD works without straight up without having to eliminate the 3.3v pins.

        • My code gave an error message saying it had already been redeemed
Amazon have no way of contacting them about an issue with an order as far as i can see.

Edit: Even tho i got an error message I am pretty sure it went through. Nice!

          • @DanielP2: Was the box still sealed?

            • @AdosHouse: it was, but the tape came off very easy, easier than i would have expected

the 3 months did add to my account though even tho it gave an error. i didnt notice at first cuz i already had almost 2 years on my sub

  • Mine are still in France and I paid for expedited. Weird.

  • I saw a lot of complaints about these drives being noisy. Its dead silent compared to the 6TB WD black in my PC.

And double the speed too. And i still havent shucked it, the enclosure itself seems to be awesome, even if it does feel cheap as hell.

  • Ripper, got it and crystaldiskinfo says it's an HGST HC520 :)
Will give it a good run before shucking, copying from 2 HDisks simultaneously at 80mb/s to the HC520 at 160mb/s and it's quiet as a mouse. Only 60% active, although must be jumping around to write to 2 areas.

    • I got a solid 250Mb/s when copying from a SSD. None of my other HDDs apart from my WD Gold can sustain that speed to test it.

  • FYI the disk temp reported from crystal disk info in the USB enclosure was 47c, even with their little fan.

Now I've shucked it and installed in a PC in front of a fan it's 31c, much healthier.

    I'm getting 250mb/s too, great.

  • Just received, being sold through Amazon.com.au I didn't realise it wouldn't come with an AU compatible power supply, they only included UK/US adapters :/

    • Yes I used another one I had as they're a standard voltage. Now it's in the PC it's no longer needed.

    • You can use a plug adaptor from KMart.

    • +1

You can register the product, contact wd support, and they will send you out a power adapter for free.

I had 2 from the last deal, and they sent out 2 power adapters.

      • Thanks, I'll try that.

  • My Xbox GPU said it had already been redeemed but I am sure it went through. I forgot to check my subs before redeeming.

  • Got my 3 today, packaging was kind of flimsy, box looked knocked about. I'll see how they go with full tests.

  • When does the Game Pass expire?
