can only radeem iphone with points… sadly i don’t have enough points…

    • +1

      from the email:

Plus, if you need to boost your points balance, you can save 20% on the cash required for Top-up points.

Although this is probably not worth it when doing the maths on points to $ value, depending on how short you are.

      • That's a good pick up. I'll update the description.

    • *redeem (maybe)

  • +1

so tempted to pull the trigger on iphone…someone pls tell me getting an iphone 12/ 128gb at 0.71c (198,816 QFF) is a very bad deal….
    street price $1429

    • +2

Afraid I can only egg you on..

I was always planning to upgrade from my iPhone 7 with points to an iPhone 12.

Based on the iPhone 11 pricing before the site updated, I was expecting to pay ~210,000 QFF for 64GB iPhone 12. In the end, 128GB for under 200k QFF was happy days.

      • +2

the only other motivational factor is that it would still take some time before travel returns to normal for us to redeem these miles
Plus maybe then try my luck with Qantas Premier Card 100K points for 199 for self and wifey…and stock back on points..

    • +9

It’s a terrible deal compared to what c. 200,000 points could get you with travel.

Just buy the phone with cash/cars and save the points for when borders open

      • +22

I tried to enter the VIN of my 2001 Mitsubishi Lancer into the payment portal and it didn't work.

        Any tips?

        • +2

          The answer wasn’t a Lancer.

      • +5

Just buy the phone with cash/cars

iPhone Pro 12 256GB now just 14 Datsun 120Y Fastbacks.

    • +15

It depends entirely on what you would have otherwise spent the 198,816 points.

If you would have just used it to redeem gift cards, then their value is 198,816 * 0.5 / 100 = $994.08. So, getting something valued at $1429 for these points is a very good deal.

If you would have spent it on business class rewards points, then their value is 198,816 * 3 / 100 = $5,964, and then it's a bad deal.

Personally, I'm very pessimistic that things will get back to normal anytime soon, and I'm more and more tempted to use up my Qantas points on shopping.

If you're more optimistic, and like to use Qantas points for travel, then you should keep them.

      • +1

So far iv only used my points for travel..my redemptions include eco/business/first so I definitely appreciate the value that these points offer for travel…
Personally, I agree intnl travel would not return so, but I want to go into say mid of 2021 with a decent point balance to start booking trips for mid 2022.
I think by answering this I’ve cleared my mind and decided to keep my points.

Also since I use my phone for work fair bit - not sure how would someone claim the business expense on their tax return when buying the ph via points?

        • Exactly what I was thinking - about how (if even possible) to claim back for tax purposes

        • When you look at the points calc, do you take into account the fees and taxes?

I've looked at it in the past, and the points feel minuscule when you add tax and fees

and compare it to discounted fares, which is what I'd be choosing otherwise

      • +1

Travel restrictions are going to end eventually , I'd keep hoarding mine as demand may outstrip supply when travel fully opens up.

      • +4

If you would have spent it on business class rewards points, then their value is 198,816 * 3 / 100 = $5,964

I think this sort of comparison is pretty meaningless. Who on OzB would ever pay for business class like this? It'd be classic reward, upgrade, or a good deal in which case you'd pay the fare anyway, not points.

Personally, I'm very pessimistic that things will get back to normal anytime soon, and I'm more and more tempted to use up my Qantas points on shopping.

But I'm in the same boat plane. Got a whole heaps of points, which I wanted to use on 1 or 2 nice trips. Now everything has big question marks. International travel will eventually open up, but by then how much will QF have devalued the points, and all those changes in supply/demand and operating capacity, may not be possible to get a rewards seat anyway! May as well get a few nice-to-keep items out of it instead before the points tank?

        • +1

This. Plus the whole possible restructure of points is really worrying….

        • The comparison is weak.

Because the calculations are based on full fare.

Only if you normally pay full fare would the calc work.

Most of the time many people buy discounted fare, whether its with qantas or another airline.

When you compare the points to this the points system falls apart.

    • Hmm 198816 x 0.71/100=$1411
      Jbfi $1429
I’m really confused here. To me that’s not a bargain to be excited about or am I calculating incorrectly. :-(

    • -5

Qantas wants to steal your points, it's a bad deal.

E.g. iPhone for 248000 points, when I can sell those points for $3700 cash when covid is over or maybe more if demand ends up high due to ending of travel restrictions.

  • If this (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/566395) is the going rate, then it isn't worth it.

EDIT: I'm looking at the iPhone 12 Pro 256GB (https://store.qantas.com/au/p/apple-iphone-12-pro-256gb/2000…).

    • no product found for that link - have they pulled them off? cant turn up any 12s with search function

EDIT - ignore, just saw edit to OP post

  • Pre-covid fair value is somewhere between 1 to 1.1c/point…
I mean that is the only thing holding me back…

    • -4

Imagine as soon as travel fully opens up, I wouldn't be surprised closer to 2c pp. Pre covid I was selling for 1.2c

      • +2

haha - 2C is very very optimistic, these are QFF miles not Afterpay stock…lol

  • +7

Quarter of a mil of points for an iphone. not worth it in the slightest

    • Can I ask what you spend your QFF points on? I understand the greatest yield is in flight upgrades but given you're more likely to find me on a budget airline I've always just thought to score a free new phone (and new laptop, when the time comes) when I needed one.

      • +4

        Classic reward flights

        • I find the tax etc you have to pay offsets the value of this. A lot of the time if ur flexible, you’re better off waiting for heavily discounted sale tickets. Each to their own ..

          • +2

@bowtiehoon: To reduce the tax component with qantas points, save them for redemptions for Oneworld carrier flights that don’t depart Australia. Also make sure your final destination is a less popular port if available (eg don’t fly into LHR or CDG, try connecting flights into INV, MAN, NCE etc) in the same points zone.

I’ve found using AA and BA miles don’t typically charge the high fees for flying QF ex Australia though.

          • +1

@bowtiehoon: My cool story is that I went to the UK and back in Bus class a couple of years ago using points. I still had to pay the price of an economy ticket in taxes.

But boy was it worth it. From the bar on the A380's to the Moet & Chandon bar in dubai.

I didn't want to get off the plane at the end. Even though there was a merc waiting for me out the front……(sadly it's hard to get that final perk of a limo any more).

      • +3

For 200,000 points you could get at least 10 domestic economy returns from say Sydney to Brisbane - worth at least double the RRP of the iPhone

But as you allude to, the smart use of points is biz class rewards or upgrades.

        • +2

Nice one. For me, even outside of Covid I'm probably only going interstate once a year with mates and hopping on a Jetstar sale. But can't deny it sounds like great value.

        • smart use domestically is taking the other half away for the weekend and surprising her with the business class upgrade (especially if you can get on an A330).

There were some "Classic Rewards" when we got to the hotel I can tell you……

  • since when they started to charge delivery fee? i can not remember

    • Apparently new since covid according to others in other threads

      • Nah new since a few weeks ago
When they relaunched the site. I ordered a TV in Aug and paid no delivery

    • I just spent/used 335,016 PTS without having to have to pay delivery? In not sure how you qualify for free delivery.

    • +1

There's some items without delivery fee such as apple watch

  • Apple
    10.2-inch iPad (8th-Generation) Wi-Fi 32GB
    69,424

That a good deal? I'm out of the loop with iPads

    • -1

No, it's the old model. Apple just released the new one and it's available in Oct

      • +1

Pretty sure the 8th Gen was released last month.. I think you are referring to the new iPad Air which is due out later this month.
2 diff types of ipads suitable for diff users.

        • +1

Yes, you are right. iPad (8th generation) released in Sep and iPad Air (4th generation) released in this month.
I thought he is taking about the one just release.

    • I am also wondering if any of the iPad options are a good deal.

  • Discount on watch I am getting 775.79 +2000 points at check out. On website it was 787.50+2000 Qantas points

    • +1

      Am I missing something

      • 20% off the points price!

        • Thanks …

  • +1

    Site getting Ozbargained, can’t checkout..

  • +1

Where's the 12 mini? That's the one I'm looking for.

    • Getting released later in the year.

  • Anyone find any bargains?

    • contemplating a garmin gps for my bike…I know not the best value for points….but we still have 300k saved for flights later so why not…

    • Got a B&O Beosound Stage for just under $2k + 2000 points (got 4000 points back), cheapest I could find at other sites was $2.3k

  • Just order new watch on Tuesday. Anyone ever had experience with them refunding the difference? (I know unlikely!)

    • I'm on the same boat comrade! Place an order of Apple watch 6 on 14Oct, order hasn't been dispatched and still showing processing. But suspiciously a startrack shipping number automatically added to my Auspost account.
I just phoned Qantas store and requested to cancel the order due to points value of the item dropped 20%, they said they'll have to check with supplier to see if it has been sent and will get back to me in 2 business days…at the same time I asked the lady if they could refund me the points in difference in case the order can't be reversed. I'll see how it goes, I'll probably place another order utilising the sale then sell another one at market price.

    • Got a delivery notification just now, so yea too late to get order cancelled if you ordered on Tuesday, maybe you could try to call them to see if they could refund the difference, that might not happen most likely!

      • I emailed them, but might call them. I already have had the watch delivered and opened :(

        • Let me know how it goes for you as well. Anyway enjoy your new watch and have a nice weekend!

  • +2

I just noticed that you can get the discount without using points.
Might be a bit of a hack I guess, but just found out accidently.

    Sonos Sub, usually $987.50.
However if you say that you will pay with points it adds to the cart with the 20% discount.
Then when you are in the 'cart' itself change the slider back to paying with $$ and it comes up as $816.08
I started to go through the checkout process and it looks to hold at that amount.

Just figured I would post it on the off chance it's useful to someone.

    • it only allows to checkout if u have sufficient points

      • Yes . I Tried. Don't have enough points. Could not get any benefit. Purchasing points is 3 X expensive. I don't know who buys these points

    • I think they fixed it. Can’t see the slider bar or cash+points option when I add iPhone 12 to cart and try to checkout.

      • I tried the same - can't use cash+points. Where in the checkout is this coming up?

        • +1

Just noticed that Points Plus Pay is only available for certain items not for everything. Can see Points Plus Pay option when I try to purchase Sonos sub. But not available for iPhones.

    • got one. thanks.

  • Someone mentioned that they offering flight cancellations for free up until 2021 - can anyone verify this?

    • -2

The points required for Seiko Astron appear very high as compared to Starbuy specials. Typically street prices are better than Qantas store at 20% off.

  • I’m not sure how to workout the conversion (points to $) to check if what I want to buy is a good bargain. $1=how many points approximately?

  • +1

iphone sale is impressive! pulling the trigger

  • Normally 18000 points approx equals $100 gift card like Dan Murphy's. Rough calculation.

    • so looks like its ~0.56 cents per point

  • It’s asking me for a promo code

    • don't need one.. applies at checkout

      • I can’t go to checkout, seems only a valid code enables the checkout button, but then anything I enter says it’s an invalid code.

        • click checkout? i just did it without a code

          • +2

@Da dpG: Thank you for reconfirming to click checkout all this time I was clicking the X on my browser.

Anyone else experiencing the same issue with not being able to go to checkout?

            • @solidice: Seems like can only checkout if using only points

            • @solidice: I'm experiencing this too

              • +1

@tuvl: Seems you can't do points plus pay if you don't have enough points to cover the product in the first place.

    • May be not enough points ?

  • Anyone seeing an additional 10% off for being a Points Club Plus member?
Ie - iPhone 12 128GB is 248,520, showing up as 198,816.. i'm a plus member, last time they had 20% samsung it applied the additional 10% doesn't look it works this time.

    • I am also a Plus member, but can only see iPhone 12 128GB for 198,816. So seems we can’t stack 20%+10%.

      • same - sucks cant stack

    • how do we become plus member?

      • you need to earn 350k points within your membership year through card sign up bonuses and spending.

Amazing ! Got the Theragun Pro for 125,000 points! Been frothing over it since the incorrect price on Catch a while back so glad I got a deal!

    • +1

      Glad to hear it :)

    • +1

That's a great product. I have one of the earlier versions. I paid full price for it, but with the amount I have saved from massage and physio it has paid for itself.

      • That’s what I am hoping hahah

  • -4

It stinks of an ebay 20% off sale where prices are inflated.

132,000 for the iPhone SE 128GB is pricing it at $1320!!! It's $749 in stores. So sure 20% is nice down to 105,000 or $1050 but thats still wayyyy over RRP.

Based on 1c / point which is the long term average (excluding covid) and what ive been selling my points for for years.

    • Man I always want to sell my points but fear the wrath of the legal team.

      I’ve got over 320,000 just sitting there…

      • -4

im happy to buy them $500 - 100k points

  • +7

People here need to stop gatekeeping on the points value. If someone wants to purchase goods using their points and not flights, then that is the decision they can make. Stop saying it's not good value etc etc. Each individual has their own value system.
