  • Ok, how much should we buy now?

    • +3

      5k?

    • +3

Gift cards lose about 3% of their value per year through inflation, so enough cards to last 1 year and 8 months by which time their value will have dropped by 5%.

      • +10

That really depends on what you'd do with the money otherwise. If you're getting 3% by investing it elsewhere (eg, paying extra on a mortgage), then sure. If you're just going to keep it in a savings account, then you're likely not getting more than 1.5%.

        • +5

          (1.015)^n = 1/0.95
          n = log(1/0.95)/log(1.015) = 3.45

So roughly 3.45 years of WW gift cards is the right answer.

After that, each $ of gift card you buy will cost you more in foregone interest than the 5% discount.

          But a couple of uncertainties:
+ The interest rate may further go down from 1.5% (or it could go up) over the next 3 years
          - The 5% (or some other promo) could come back periodically, which might mean it would have been better off not to be holding on to that many gift cards that far out — by the time you are at 2 years of gift cards, each $ you add is only an effective 2% discount after interest losses.

          • +1

@hayfeverman: Should you also account for tax? Or is 1.5% bank interest after tax? Bank interest is taxed. Paying $95 for $100 wish card is not taxed

            • +3

@davedave: Great point. So that would update that calculation to closer to roughly 5 years or higher depending on your marginal tax rate.

Personally, I only bought half a year's worth despite this calculation.

The reason why is because of uncertainty and the fact there are buffering strategies that diminish the expected value of a Woolworths gift card for me personally:
              1. I don't know if I will always live near a Woolworths (I'm a renter)
              2. It might give me reason to do more shopping at Aldi after 6 months (as my current habits are 100% at Woolworths which probably are not optimal anyway)
              3. They may still have promotional gift card offers from time to time!
              4. I also didn't want to exceed a threshold on my credit card that would reduce the point earn rate for this month (admittedly that's only worth ~0.5% of the transaction, so its not a tipping point, but it does create a step change in the economics)

So in combination, given that every extra $ becomes less and less appealing, and that uncertainty creates a larger and larger option value over time, it "felt" right to cut off at that amount. Probably a better argument is the amount of WW gift cards to last a year is actually an amount of money that would be worth putting into the stock market too (it's not a small holding cash amount), so now we're talking about rates of return closer to 5%, which also shortens that horizon that much more.

      • +1

But if you're using them consistently over the time, on average each card will have only been exposed to half that time to depreciate - so maybe you should buy 3 years worth?

        • +3

& then you'll only come out even, not ahead

      • +1

The last time we had 3% inflation was quite a while ago

      • +1

The more I think about the more I think inflation is completely irrelevant because either way the purchases are in the same time in the future. It's the after tax nominal return on your money that matters. If your money is in a bank account that's likely about 0.9%. If it's in an offset account it might be around 3%. If it's in the share market it's completely unknown

      • which country are you living in?

    • Yes

  • Get a casual role with WW. 10% discount.

    • +4

With WISH eGift cards, that's 14.5% total…until next week.

    • Is it still 10% off as of today? I think it has been reverted back to 5% off.

    • do you get 10% off buying phone recharges?

  • +1

FYI union shopper still have 5% listed with no mention of a price drop (that could however change)

  • +1

    Back to coles then

    • …who already have switched to 3% on their gift cards?

  • AGL - dropping from 5% to 4%

    • AGL gift cards are terrible to use though.

  • Can you use the gift card to purchase JB Hi Fi gift cards?

    • no you cant..

    • In principle no, unless you get lucky with some human/system error during checkout

    • Not usually.

    • I have done this at the self checkout but around 2 years ago. I think (based on info on ozb) that they have patched it.

    • +1

This used to work but hasn't for a year or two no matter what method you try (bundling it with other items, partial payment, self-checkout or manned checkout etc)

  • +1

Who's got over $10k stock already?

    • +1

      10k !?

      • +1

3.5k per year for 3 years would be 10.5k

      • It's not like they expire

  • +1

Just checked my AGL rewards account looks like it is going down to 4% from the 21st of October :( ……screen shot below

    • I checked as well. Big W gift cards which is 5% work at woolies as well

      • Is this confirmed? Suncorp still have big w at 5% off today

  • Is there an expiry date on a gift card you buy now?

  • +1

question is. how much are u guys topping up?? max $500 in a card. i cant see myself topping up more than 1k.. but that means after 1k.. i wont have the opportunity to top up and get 5% disc anymore.

  • Oh hell no!

    2020

    - End of 5% WW GC

    RIP

    • +1

coles gift card drop from 5% to 4%

  • Record sale of giftcard in October. I have took the risk of buying one more GC. Hope to is not going it end up like dick smith wait a minute…

Wonder if entertainment book will still have it

    • +1

Entertainment Book have confirmed they are moving to 3%

      • +1

Will they be going to 0% afterwards as well?

  • +3

Been buying these in $500 lots to save $25 each time over the past few years. Damn!

  • +1

Dang should've jumped on the earlier GC deal given the reduction in savings… shouldn't have taken things for granted!

    • I didnt do that one either so I went to Coles last night and used my HSBC to get 2% off a hundred dollar mastercard and then bought a 105.25 woolies card

      • Don't you have to pay a fee for the MasterCard, like $5, rendering the 2% pretty much ineffective?

        • no they gave me 1000 flybuys points plus 210 extra points (I get 2 flybuys points per dollar)

          • @screensaver: Great, works out nicely for you then :-)
Which MasterCard is it that does not charge the fee? I like the idea of using Prepaid Mastercard and not exposing my CC details, but the fee charged by many of them always discourages me.

            • +1

@bluesky: its a this week special

              • @screensaver: Great, thanks. I will have a look.

              • @screensaver: Found it in the catalogue. But the T&Cs do say:

When purchasing COLES GIFT MASTERCARD, a $5 purchase fee will apply in addition to the value of the gift card.

However, even with the fee, I can see how one would still be ahead - with the 1000pts and the HSBC 2%.

                • @bluesky: and the base points

                  • @screensaver: hellopam2019, fyi the cost of the coles $100 mastercard is $5 thus you can NOT use your hsbc card to get 2% as its over $100. coles doesnt allow split pay for gift cards.

                    • @coolsteps: Here is how.

                      • @Neoika: thanks i never knew that nor tried it. i guess pay with $5.05 cash then tap and pay with hsbc may work. i usually use a $500 coles e card.

                    • @coolsteps: yes I just struck that, one staff wouldnt let me but I kept saying its a hundred dollar limit and the manager let me do it. I was shocked, backup plan would be qantas debit mastercard for whole amount to get ff points

  • Is RAC affected?

  • +3

RAC (WA) still seems to have the Wish cards for 5% off too, but time will tell how long that will last…

  • Good thing they dont expire at least :/ can last a few months on inventory hahah

  • +6

Ok just means i can shop anywhere now and not worrying about going to woolies, dans, big w

    • Yeh definitely made me more "loyal" to buying from Woolies group, no 5% discount evens the field more…

  • +1

with Amazon taking a slice of supermarket shopping, all WW can do is increase the no. of WW-branded items in their shelves in order to maintain some form of diversification.

  • Thanks OP

  • +3

Farewell gift cards !! You've served us well for so long.

  • +1

Can we use shopback to get the Woolworths gift card with 5% off?

  • +5

0% discount for Woolworths to hold onto my cash. WW is just dreaming.

  • Damn. How much to buy

  • +13

People who plan on topping up really need to think about their opportunity cost. If you’re buying 10k of woolies gift cards and it’ll take you a couple years to spend it, you might be better off putting that cash in an offset account or investing it in some other asset. I’ve only ever bought enough gift cards to meet my immediate requirement, and anything beyond a month or two is not worth the hassle/opportunity cost for me. YMMV

    • +4

A family would be able to spend $200 per week at a supermarket. That would take a year to burn through.

      • +2

Yes I'm aware, hence YMMV. My comment is more so for people who get caught up in the hype that there will no longer be a discount and go out and spend a crazy amount on GCs when it might not be worth it.

        • Agreed, YMMV indeed.

For a spend budget of $9,500, a family that spends $200 weekly could have otherwise saved ~$148 in loan interest (accounting for the diminishing amount each time they shop). Much less than the $500 bonus they'd get with the gift card.
But if you only spend $50 a week, an initial offset amount of $9,500 could have saved ~$602 in interest (again, accounting for diminishing amount).

These figures assume a 3.5% loan interest rate. So of course, this is just the interest opportunity cost. You might get more value from a new TV instead. :)

          • +1

@TimeOrMoney: Keep in mind apart from Offset, interest earned is taxable. Discounts aren't/

          • @TimeOrMoney: Is there a calculator for this? I want to compare how much I will save on my mortgage interest if I left the money in offset instead of stocking up on giftcards.

  • +1

Shopback: just checked their website, no changes yet I can see.

  • +2

Tipping Woolies is going to have a decline in sales - I won't buy from there as often as soon as my $2200 of credit is gone. Now how will I flip my credit cards without this discount?? ugh

    • +1

      Lol no.

Your gift card is a drop in the ocean.

      • I’m aware of how big Woolworths is. 🙄

The point is I would definitely not be on my own when I say I don’t care too much where I shop and I have 4 choices within 5 minutes from my home. I shopped at Woolies because of the 5% discount on gift cards. That’s it. Dropping the discount will mean a decline in business for them, by how much is the unknown. Don’t forget Dan Murphy sales too.

  • Terrible news.
Hopefully we can buy direct from them in future.

Cashrewards etc would be getting a cut it a fee

    • +2

No way Woolies will offer that directly, too mainstream

      • Maybe, but people who buy them already buy them via Woolies, get charged from Woolies and they are sent by Woolies, so not like people don't know they offer it

      • Well it looks like there offering 4% off direct with them now..
Expect this kind offer we be available various times also.

  • does Coles offer any discount ?

    • +3

You can find 4% coles discount through AGL, suncorp and others.

    • +1

The problem is we'll continue to shop at Woolworths group stores anyway. The only way complaining works is if we stop spending, but that won't happen.

I'm just waiting for HSBC to scrap its 2% PayWave cashback offer now…

      • -1

We are the OzBargain army!!! We can do anything! If we can make eBay change codes to sitewide, we can definitely do this too. Sign my petition.

      • I chose woolworths because of the GC, afterwards it’ll be back to deciding the colesworth battle and then ending up at aldi.

      • HSBC can end it at any time.

  • +6

Yeap no more incentive to go to Woolies no more.

  • +2

Is it a trick? So that now many of us will rush up to stockup.. and after 19th, they will revert back?

    • Dunno, but I'm buying 10k just in case.

  • +4

This was a great way of meeting minimum spend requirements on new credit card deals.

    Shame to see it gone.

  • +2

the big supermarkets giving their customers a big middle finger …

    • They can afford to do so during a pandemic. Look at the number of specials dropping since COVID hit.

  • -1

Can you buy a gift card anywhere with Apply Pay?

Trying to use the 28 degrees offer.

    • +1

Of course you can buy from Woolworth or Coles but no discount. If over $100, just tap and enter pin. Just paid a car service fee to use the 28 degrees offer
