No. 970 Evo is a no brainer.

      • +1

What makes you say that? Seagate has it beat on all specs

        • +2

          Seagate 510 - 3400MB/s Read, 3000MB/s Write, 4K Read 600,000IOPS, 4K Rrite 600,000IOPS
          970 Evo - 3400MB/s Read, 2500MB/s Write, 4K Read 520,000IPS, 4K Write 480,000IOPs

Genuine question, why negs with no explanation?

        • +6

specs are one thing, how they actually perform is another. Hard to find actual reviews on the unit but here's one comparing the 512gb model to a bunch of others, including the 970 evo.

          https://www.storagereview.com/review/seagate-barracuda-510-n…

Pretty much behind the various 970 evo capacities in most tests. That said you aren't going to notice the difference IRL but you can go the seagate which seems to barely have 10 reviews on the internet or the tried and trusted for $4 more…

@GUYANDSON: Samsung is the gold standard when it comes to SSDs. Unmatched excellent reliability and perfomance.

          • @GUYANDSON: There is a huge difference in performance between the 512GB and 1TB. You’ll actually find that the 1TB speeds are faster than the 970 Evo

        • Samsug has slightly better endurance.

        • Samsung make their own NAND and controller.

    • +4

think ive confused it with the plus version

      • +2

Was gonna say the same thing - still, good on ya!

Before anyone asks, this model doesn't have cashback from Samsung.

  • +8

It's because this is a 970 EVO and not the 970 EVO Plus. The differences are minimal, but just be aware that this is the older drive and also not eligible for the currently running cashback.

    • Samsung used to offer cashback for their 970 EVO up to $167 but now they only offer the 970 EVO Plus $89 max.

  • +1

wow this is a nice price it was 260 like in March

    • -2

      I didn't much like it.

  • regardless of it using ddr3 dram and 64-layer 3bit nand, it's still fast for any type of user unless it's for a server.

  • just picked up the 1TB version from mwave today for same price.

also, the I7 10700f seems the lowest for now, $449.

    • Isn't mwave + delivery?

      • you can pick up from lidcombe in nsw, dunno about other states

        • +4

          Not far from Canberra.

Holy cow, Batman! Good price but seems like it’s the new RRP

Samsung Evo is a good reliable brand, I paid $300+ for my 512gb 860 evo 3 years ago, still excellent performing compared to Black WD that I got recently

    • What model of WD Black did you end up getting and what's the issue? I've been wanting to get the SN750 but just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

      • i got sn750 , i have no problems at all with it, just slightly slower booting time than my old 860 evo :-)

  • Has their site just gone down for everyone else? Mid-way through purchase.

    Edit: it's back up.

  • Nice SSD, bought one

    • +1

Should be great for running Matlab.

  • -1

    This compared to Kingston A2000?

    • When it comes to SSDs stick with Samsung. They are the best in perfomance and reliabilty.

My 840 evo still going strong, got this 970 last month and its blazing fast.

    • from what i've heard and seen, Kingston A2000 is still one of the best SSD out there in the market, along with Crucial MX500 and P1. AData SX8100 is also another great candidate. if you're thinking of buying, the word of advice is get whichever on special on that day for those mentioned brands/models.

  • Edit: nvm

Just purchased it from ebay 248.95$

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-970-EVO-M-2-1000-GB-PCI-…

Then got ebay to price match it to get 69.40$ ebay voucher back. Total cost 179.55.

Used TCN 5% ebay gift cards so it really is recycling voucher codes for more.

    Cashback from cashrewards as well.

    • +2

      Hey,
Was the pricematch hard? How would you get a price match on ebay? Thanks!

      • +2

It's not hard I just did the same thing. After ordering on ebay start a chat with the support team. Provide the item number and the link from this post. After 5 minutes you'll get the confirmation and in 2 days you'll get the voucher.

      • +2

yea it was quite easy. U can open chat and price match first before u purchase. Just need the item code in ebay and the link on approved competitor to price match. Took me about 5 min as well.

  • Anyone know if this will be compatible with the PS5 expansion slot?

    • Most likely not as they need a PCI-e Gen 4 SSD to meet the required speeds. However obviously as the PS5 is not out yet I can't tell you for sure, just very very unlikely.

    • Nobody knows yet. But this drive is slower than the PS5 requirement. At best it'll be fast cold storage for PS5 games to move between it and the main SSD faster than a USB HDD, but play PS4 games straight from it. At worst, it won't be supported at all.
Just wait for news if you are looking for one for PS5.

      • i refuse to believe that PS5 can and will exceed highly-rated PC specs; i understand the rave is out there about next-gen consoles being the greatest and the best but this is the mother PC we talking about. that's just my 2c and I will echo your point below:

        Nobody knows

        • PS5 uses a custom PCI-E Gen 4 SSD and a custom controller that supposedly tops out at 5.5GB/s. This Samsung is Gen 3 and Gen 3 tops out at 3.5GB/s. PS5 storage will be faster than 90% of gaming PCs currently in circulation, even high end ones as most of us never saw the benefit of Gen 4 for gaming, but that may well change going forward depending how the new consoles effect PC coding. Based on a rumoured OEM price list for PS5, the SSD is almost half the cost of the entire system. It's nuts.

Nobody knows just how fast PS5 storage will be in real world, but we do know this Samsung will not have any chance of working in a PS5 correctly or at all.

          • @BradH13: do you mean like this sort of Gen 4 SSD?

            • @[Deactivated]: The Sabrent Rocket Gen4 only hits 5 GB/s, so technically slower than the PS5's SSD. You want something equal or faster, like the WD Black SN850 or the Samsung 980 Pro.

        • As BradH13 said, PS5's SSD is a Gen4, which is much quicker than the current Gen3 like this 970 EVO. However, the fastest PC Gen4 is the Samsung 980 Pro which can hit 7 GB/s, faster than the PS5's 5.5 GB/s.

I expect that you should be able to use the 980 Pro in the PS5 (Sony has not yet confirmed this yet).

  • Wait for Black Friday or not?

  • postage is not included becuse of covid, so price is not 189 total, depends where you are.

  • Good deal.

Can anyone recommend a case to facilitate cloning my existing drive ?

  • I ordered this drive but the order got put on hold because I use a VPN (which I do all the time). They sent me an email that explained this and said 'Please reply to this email to resolve this issue'.

So I replied, and got a bounce back:

'Your message couldn't be delivered to the recipient because you don't have permission to send to it.

Ask the recipient's email admin to add you to the accept list for the recipient.'

So I then tried to call both of their phone numbers but they are not accepting phone calls either. I have now raised a support ticket but it seems their support is either hopeless and / or overwhelmed.

So I guess be a little wary of any issues arising here, and especially dont use a VPN when ordering.

    • Were you on an Aussie IP when you place the order?

      • Yes.

    • +2

I ordered from them a few weeks back and had my VPN turned on and had the same issue. I just replied to the same email and did not get bounced back and one of their staff responded to manually approve it.

    • +1

It says my order has been shipped now so all seems to have been sorted out. They didn't reply to my ticket but that is understandable if they're very busy.

  • Have people started seeing these ship out? I transferred the payment on Sunday, but forgot to include the order reference. Immediately opened a ticket, but haven't heard back. Just wondering if orders are being slow or I need to hassle them again.

    • Ordered mine 1/11. Shipped 4/11. Delivered 6/11.

      • Finally got a response after 5 days. They cancelled my order because they hadn't received payment and asked if I had been charged (even though I had given them details of the transfer). I know it was my stuff up initially, but not impressed that I waited a week for that response.

is this the same one for $113 on amazon?

    • saving $5 to get it from the U.S

      • $5 is $5. this is ozbargain after all.

  • NOTE: the cashback promotion for this expired 11:59pm AEDT last night…

    • this never came with cashback, but there was a suggestion for the 500gb to buy the 970 plus as it ended up cheaper with cashback, now removed as expired

      • Apologies - that's the one I was referring to (which is actually the one I bought)…

  • Was just about to pick out some components from MSY, but they all seem cheaper at centre.com
