It's an Ultra wide, what's 4k got to do with it?

    • Buy USB-C to DP adapter for $10. Now, has “USB-C”.

      • +4

On the one hand, yeah that would work for display input. On the other hand, other monitors have a USB-C connection which will a) provide a display signal, b) fast-charge a compatible laptop, and c) allow the monitor to act as a USB hub to connect all your peripherals to. It might even let you daisy-chain more monitors to the first one, so you have everything you need for your laptop provided by a single cable.

Basically it would provide functionality similar to a USB-C thunderbolt dock, but built into the monitor for a cleaner desk layout. Given docks like this can cost $200+ by themselves it's actually a pretty significant feature. For example: https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/dell-universal-dock-d60…

USB-C 3.1 doesn’t have bandwidth for multiple uncompressed 4K video streams, so, no daisy-chain. That Dell dock isn’t Thunderbolt 3, hence relying on DisplayLink compression. Acceptable to some, perhaps.

USB-C power delivery maximum is 100W. Good enough for low power (Intel U-class) but not high performance (Intel H-class) laptops. Again, acceptable to some, perhaps.

          • @AlexF: Many laptops in the 100W camp or less :)

Also I have the dock - it supports thunderbolt via USB-C, but it will also run DisplayLink using the USB-A plug. I specifically brought this up with our IT department before they gave it to me because I hate the input lag from DisplayLink, they assured me it works and my testing confirms that. The product page really doesn't make this clear though, you're right.

            • @Alzori: Dell D6000 dock’s USB-C port doesn’t support Thunderbolt, regardless of what your “IT department” told you.

              • @AlexF: Hmm, looks like you're right, my bad. It definitely does seem better via usb-C on my new laptop, though that may just be sure to the older laptop struggling with the displaylink software.

                • +1

@Alzori: If you have just one monitor connected to dock, most likely you’d be using USB-C’s “alternate mode” (using second pair of high-speed connections within USB-C) for its video stream - DisplayLink will only be used for second and third monitor.

This Monitor was released back in 2014.

  • +6

    60 Hz. Can’t go back to 60Hz

    • +1

New non-gaming monitors to be created in the next years and years will have 60Hz refresh rate.

      • Or probably 75?

    • I have mine at 85Hz.

  • +2

I've had this for about 6 years and it's still my daily driver. Fantastic monitor, I paid about $100 more back then so process haven't dropped much.

Would recommend. It's chunky though so keep that in mind.

  • +1

had this for 6 years now, only had the one other monitor for comparison being a 24" dell and i have to say this 34" back bleed is terrible.

I've grown used to it but it oh so noticeable every time i enter a watch media stream or movie.

    • +10

Well it says sharp in the title, not Dell's problem if it causes bleeding.

      • +1

not even sure what that means. but yeh the edges and corners seems to bleed out alot, guess its my fault for not knowing this, its just my daily driver and never game.

      • Can't argue with that

  • This a good price for brand new.

  • Good monitor for work during covid. Bought mine at start of lockdown. No issues. If you want the convenience of 1 cable grab a USB C to hdmi/usb/power adapter for like <$50 or thunderbolt if you’ve got the $$. Love having the second input hooked up to a personal machine so easy to switch off at end of day

  • Fantastic monitor, bought one in 2018 still going strong (very flashy at the time). Great for gaming and Photoshop.

  • +3

This or Xiaomi 34"? Disregarding price.

    • +2

      Apples and oranges.

Dell is a IPS but only 60 Hz, Xiaomi is a VA but 144hz.

      • Except Xiaomi is $500 on a sale.

    • I guess it depends, Gaming or Office use.

  • +5

The coupon "EPP2020" brings it down to $729.30 :)

    • Thanks doweyy, updated.

    • ShopBack’s 8% cashback is negated with voucher?

  • +3

I’ll pick the Xiaomi rather than this one. VA is much better in terms of contrast and bleeding. The disadvantage of response time is mitigated with 144HZ. So I see no reason choosing this monitor unless you want a better customer service.

    • This is not a gaming monitor. IPS > VA if you do not need 144Hz.

    • +1

there a samsung VA 31" WQHD 144hz 4MS for like $550 with 500GB SSD claimable.

      seems pretty good

    • +1

I'll wait for the Xiaomi deal

  • I have owned this monitor since it’s release, but since work from home, it’s become instrumental.

It has two USB uplink ports and one to my personal pc, one to my work one. So at the end of the day, I change from DP to MDP and all of my peripherals transfer to the other pc without moving a plug.

  • This monitor can be overcloacked to 80Hz or 85Hz. I had 2 of them, the current one does 85Hz at all resolutions, the previous one did 80Hz at the max resolution and 85hz at the rest.

  • +1

Saving my $60 coupon for a second 27" 165Hz IPS.

  • +3

The Dell 34 Monitor - P3421W might be the better buy at $809.07 with EPP2020. Sure it's $79.77 more expensive but you gain USB-C.

    • +1

but it's not an Ultrasharp. For some people, Ultrasharp is the deal breaker

      • Forgive my ignorance, but what's so good about Ultrasharp compared to the other ones?

        • +3

They tend to give better color accuracy out of the box. Of course we can always do calibration on the screen but there will always be differences between different monitor from different brands. The ultrasharps somewhat stay in the middle ground, hence the deviation in color will be less than the others.
This is very important to people who work in the media industry (photo, video, design, etc) where color accuracy is a deal-breaker for them.
Think about when you spend hours to get that perfect color for your photos, and then when you send it to your phone or TV, the color look ridiculously different

          • +1

@trantonz: Ultrasharp have lower margin for errors and arrive with calibration report as proof. Ultrasharp PremierColor (UP) is Dell’s high-end, Premium/Premier (P) is their middle-end. Ultrasharp (U) is between them. Accuracy is important during editing for publication and broadcast target.

      • Good point. I missed that.

  • That game playing on the screen looks great. What is that, anyway? Last time I played something similar was Afterburner on the Atari.

  • Waiting for U3419W to become more affordable, supports USB Type-C and KVM functions.

  • ..

  • Dell U3421WE is due to be released next month. Not sure if it will be available in Oz.

    https://www.tftcentral.co.uk/blog/dell-ultrasharp-u3421we-34…

    • Will put my $ to that one instead, cheers

    • Hopefully U3419W price will come down.

U3421WE comes with an ethernet port (I guess that's the "E" in the model name), I wonder what is it for? To provide network to a laptop when connected through USB Type-C? Effectively the monitor becomes the dock.

    • I’m waiting for this as well

  • mi 34". Slim and Sleek. <3
For gaming, I would prefer it, with VA 144.

  • Bummer.. Just order a second new such monitor last week at full price :(
    Shame on me

  • Bummer shopback says dell rejected my cashback…. should have used the code.. oh bother…

  • Got one but ended up buying another monitor. Listing back on OzBargain for $700 brand new, unopened and pick up from Melbourne CBA if anyone is interested.

  • That’s all folks!
