  • optus tries to rope you in with these 'value' but once you suckered in they have you for 2 years. and will be benifit from your excess charges.

    • there is no excess on the broadband,

having just terminated an optus contract in a good position to talk, the 30 dollars of included calls is good, for 64 bux i got 120GB and the 30 dollars… seems a massive drop in data for only 10 bux…

i hated that i couldnt run a HTTP server in optus too…
network was congested, speed tests where rigged on optus mirrors. IE the speed test page would hardly load, literally took 20 - 30 seconds then when the speed test ran it said 20-30 mb.
connecting to telstra in a couple of weeks, looking forward to no peak/off peak data.

Everyone!! Do not go to Optus. I was with them for 12 years on Cable, last 18 months has been utter hell with High pings from 6pm every single night and extremely slow download speeds. Even local pings go from 30ms up to 100ms LOCAL GAME SERVERS! This is not just me, go to whirlpool and read the Optus forum there. I am a patient person but 18 months of excuses and I just could not handle it any longer. Recently bit the bullet and went to Bigpond 200GB and home phone ,this is Cable so I wont use home phone anyway for $78 per month. I am amazed, literally amazed at the difference. I get constantly low pings local and OS even in peak times, sure I can see off peak pings of 8ms to local servers but peak pings only go to 20ms. OS pings only go from 160 to 210ms compared to Optus OS pings which were 210 to 1000+ pings with dropouts. Torrents I get 2mb/s on Bigpond ,Optus 60Kb/s :-(. If you are happy with just web browsing then this plan will be ok for you, the Optus one but if you play games local or OS or download torrents then you do not want to be locked into a 24 month contract on the Optus rubbish believe me.

    • :( same boat, plan to move to adsl2+soon, can not get bigpond cable

Have been with them for 10years, never had an issue. must say for $10 more and $64.95, the 120g data allowance might be better value for those that need it

The description should really mention 10gb peak and 20gb offpeak

    Optus:

    Min cost 24 months: $1397.56

SpinTel (first example I found after checking ADSL2 exchanges, there are lots of ISPs that resell Telstra/Optus for good prices):

Min cost 24 months: $973.80 ($39.95 per month), 20gb to use any time, 64kbits shaping, 50 free local calls per month.

$30 worth of calls at Optus rates is 100 local calls. SpinTel charge 17 cents per local call, or an extra $8.50 per month to match if only making local calls.

$30 worth of calls at Optus rates is one 37 minute STD call. SpinTel charge STD calls at 17 cents per minute with a $2 cap. To be fair, at that price, I'd guess they use VOIP somewhere.

I do not work for SpinTel, they were just the first advertisement on ADSL2exchanges.

  • I can't see the bargain here since 30gig is pathetic since you can get way better plans without having to bundle:

    $30 https://www.optus.com.au/shop/homephone for $50 included
    $25.00 30 GB http://www.exetel.com.au/a_plan_pricing_aapt.php

This was just a quick check you can probably get much lower prices and for $5 more then the $25 plan you can get 50gb of internet from exetel

  • As above, I don't see how this is a bargain - you are able to get internet on a more reliable provider for an equivalent amount. Also, it may be a bad move locking yourself into a a 24 month contract on these terms.

    This is a GREAT plan!!!!!

… if they released it about 3-4 years ago.

  • OOps, just realised it was mentionned above. I will leave it anyway.

If you are on the optus network you should be able to get this for 40 bucks a month:

    http://www.spin.net.au/products/adsl2

20GB plus 50 free local calls. If you are after phone line and cheap plan then this is for you.

Unfortunately I can only get Telstra here. What a shame.

    Obviously no bargain here.

    K.

why they still sign more customers when their own network can not cope with existing users

    • good question.
as the wise ones say, follow the trail of money and you will discover the answer.

Be aware that the phone that they're offering you is a VoIP line configured on the modem they provide you, run over your ADSL/Cable connection.

I.E - No internet connection = No phone calls incoming or outgoing and no power = no phone.

    • nope they have a battery backup for the phone in the modem.

  • For $5 more you get unlimited internet and home phone with TPG.
and for another $5 extra you also get unlimited free local calls.
    http://www.tpg.com.au/products_services/adsl2plus_pricing.ph…

    • Does TPG use Optus network like they do for mobiles? if so good luck with that.

By the way we had VOIP on our optus cable and every single night during peak times we could not talk to anyone as it just kept cutting out due to congestion. OPTUS IS A JOKE.

      • Don't know what network TPG uses.

I've been using Pennytel voip service for my incoming & outgoing calls on TPG ADSL2 internet with no problems at all for past several years. I have two DIDs on two SPA3102s, one for business & one for personal use.

To get best quality voip you need to:

        1. Enable QOS on your Modem/router.
        2. Do not max out your Down/up load speed.
