Can You Please Help Me Identify This Creature?

Hi guys,

I was cleaning the backyard of my new house today, and found two of these little buggers hanging around behind the garden shed.

Is it a Mouse? Rat? Something else?

What did it say when you asked it?

    • +1

It said: “If you only do what you can do, you will never be more than who you are.”

    • +1

It turned it's head ever so slowly, gave me a menacing grin, slowly reached forward and whispered into my ear "I am Rattus Fuscipes, hear me roar"

Rat. And they are not chefs. They are vermin. There is a saying that goes something like… you are never more than 6 feet away from a rat - which I take to mean they are f’ing everywhere. Just seeing that video makes my skin crawl. Give me a snake, a spider, a charging elephant, almost anything ahead of a rat. I must have been traumatised as a kid or something but I can’t bear them. I even tried pet rats as a teenager but that didn’t work either.

    Baby Sea Lion?

  • +2

Yes, I would agree it is a "roof" rat, the kind which runs around and jumps and plays in the roof at night. Sounds a lot bigger than it is.

  • +1

    Fire swamp rat.

  • +2

Check with your local council… my council supplies residents with free rat bait along with advice on how to use it.

    • +1

      lols, pro-tip, don't eat it.

      • why not ?

        • Most Rat poison contains a blood thinner of the type heart patients use. Use in a healthy person causes death.

  • In kindergarten they show images of animals as visual aids in familiarising one with the alphabet. Usually when they get to "M" they may show an image of a MOUSE.
Do you think a tiny creature with a pointy nose, big ears, and a tail, may be a MOUSE?

    • +14

      Did you fail kindergarten?

      • +2

What did they show at R?

        • +4

          I’m fairly sure it’s not a rhinoceros.

      • I need to go back to kindergarten…..

    • My kindy edumucation wasn't so good - that's the problem when you are an immigrant from another country, the visual aids are all in the wrong format and language! Isn't that the darndest. If only i was taught this properly 30 years ago, then all my problems would be solved.

call RSPCA or borrow neighbors cat?

    • How do you think the RSPCA will assist?

      • That’s why you call to find out.

  • +3

Pretty sure it’s a cockamouse, Lily and Marshal did a talk about it.

    • +1

If there’s two of them, then cockamice!

    • +1

      no wings :-p

    • as a HIMYM fan, not disappointed

  • +9

Looks like a 2003 Toyota Corolla.

    • No thats in my garage ;)

  • I believe that looks like a Mogwai.

Don't sprinkle it with water and DO NOT FEED IT AFTER MIDNIGHT!

    • NO SEQUELS, NEITHER!

  • Kangaroo?

  • Dingo

  • +5

I think that's my ex. Yeah I know, poor life choices and all.

Can you do me a favour and end it please?

    • +1

Still gets 2900 swipes right on Tindr

    • +1

      Why didn't you eat her?

    • +1

Sure, which end does she prefer?

  • +1

    It's called a delicacy.

  • +1

Did you go to film school. Directing is 10/10 👍

    • aaww shucks…thank you. No formal training, but I used to know a guy that knew a guy who was crew to a guy who was a newer guy who flew with a guy that knew James Cameron.
I'll try to add more rat explosions next time :)

      • +1

According to my American friend adding more thong shots will increase your view count…

        • Thanks for the pro tip, i'll get down to Kmart and get a few more 1 dollar pairs. and use the thong song as the background music too!

  • +1

I say we take off, nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

  • +2

That's defo a rat. The fact that you're filming it during the day and it doesn't care when you bang on the shed is very strange.

If you've got other animals around, be careful using baits. Secondly, there is a new bait on the market designed to prevent secondary poisoning.

But really, unless it's bothering you, I'd leave it alone. Rats are prey animals and eventually something else is going to gobble it, something else that you don't want to poison.

      • +1

Not entirely sure what's approved for home use, but corn gluten meal or norbormide-based baits are pretty safe considering secondary poisoning (if your problem is rats).

    • Yeah I thought it would have jumped or scrambled away when i hit the fence. Obviously I didn't hit it hard enough! Or maybe I am just not scary enough to these battle hardened rats…

    Aliens!!
Aliens are coming.. run for your life!

  • +1

Looks like Peter Pettigrew to me! 🤣
On a serious note, the rat might bite, be careful!

  • +1

Should be able to shoot it with an air rifle and kill it.

    • +1

Should be but can’t. There is no good reason why the government couldn’t introduce <12ft/lb regulations but Australia is too fearful to allow such things, of course it’s legal in England of all places.

    • +1

Yeah, because discharging a firearm in your back yard it totally legal…

      • I've used it to shoot cane toads before - unless at point blank range, they don't die from air rifle shots. Need actual gunpowder and bullets.

    • need 50 cal deagle for ths job.

  • +2

I believe that is a manbearpig. A rarity to behold indeed.

  • +1

    Its Stuart Little 😌🥺

  • +1

    It's a little cute mouse.
Mice have round ears (like the ones of Micky Mouse), whereas rats have pointy ears.

  • +1

Rat my ass. It's probably Millhouse.

  • +1

    fat mouse or rat

  • +1

A mouse or a rat would run away, it must be some kind of native animal.

  • +2

Might be a quenda. I have one living in my backyard - https://www.healthywildlife.com.au/quenda-3/#/

  • +1

Looks like a rat to me. You can try making a trap with a bucket and a roller (plenty of videos to make this on YouTube, it catches the rat without killing them) and you can set it free but make sure you set it free far away.

  • +1

Somewhere in animalworld the rat is posting the same question on ratzbargains.com.au

  • +1

    Bunyip

  • +1

Whatever it is, hand the camera to it. It looks capable of holding still for a decent length of time.

  • +1

Whatever he is, make him your pet, he looks pretty tame and even cleans himself.

  • +1

    Bush rat

  • +1

Looks like a Brown Rat to me. You could try and humane trap, but in my experience they don’t work very well. Best other humane way is a snap rat trap so it doesn’t suffer. However unfortunately I’ve found the most effective method is poison.

  • +1

    Subtle foot cam @ 1:04?

    • +2

I had to get a thong in there, apparently it helps the view count

  • Antechinus?

    • Nope, they look more like shrews, and are smaller.

  • Looks like dinner

  • +1

    That's Rudi Giuliani

  • It's Remy from Ratatouille

  • It's a mouse, not a rat.

  • +1

Did you shoot the video from the same camera people use to shoot UFOs?
