Networking gurus: I have an Ethernet over power extender In lounge with Ethernet out (gigabit) can I just hook this router to that?

I also want to use this as just a dedicated router for Virtual Desktop

  • I’ve currently got the below D-Link router, but I’m having range and drop out issues in a small two story townhouse.

Would OP’s router fix those issues, considering most of my devices aren’t Wifi 6 compatible?

I have this router and live in a smallish 2 storey townhouse. I have connection issues on 2nd level in spots. The standard Huawei ISP router I had before this I had no issues.

Wait for a sale on the TP-Link Deco M5 2-Pack Mesh Router. Maybe this Friday.

  • No OpenWRT support, how is the bloatware on D-Link routers?

It isn't the bloatware you have to worry about, it is the poor reliability of the hardware and the poor performance of the software. D-link warranty department seem to find reasons to dismiss complaints for any random reason, like you connected an Ethernet device that worked fine on other switches, but it is clearly a problem on this D-link one.

By the way, none of the open source firmware support WiFi 6, or even some of the more advanced parts of 802.6ac, as these use closed source code. Essentially if you want to run open source firmware, as I do, then do it just on a device that is only a router or disable the WiFi part of the router. I do the later and use dedicated UniFi access points.

      • As above.

In my 15 years in IT I can't think of a good thing to say about D-Link.

Hardware, Firmware, support/warranty and price of D-Link are all crap.

I have had this router for about 4 months and have had some issues.

I was getting up to 70 dropouts of 1-20 seconds each in a 24 hour period. It was absolute hell trying to work from home and have video calls. Talked to D-Link support and I had to manually update the firmware as for some reason the router wasn't auto updating.

For the most part, it seems to have fixed the issue, but I'm still tracking the connection, have had a couple dropouts and am still dealing with D-Link support.

I also have connection issues on the 2nd level of my smallish 2 storey townhouse.
I didn't have any issues previously with my Huawei ISP supplied router.

TBH if I had my time again, I would've bought something different as I've never had this much stuffing around with a router.

I've also had this same issue, such frequent drop outs with wireless devices stuck in "connection limbo". I replaced this one with a TP-Link. I spent ages on the phone with dlink and even submit error logs to Samsung who said it was a dns issue on the router side. I'm glad that the firmware update fixed it for you, as when I had it there was no update.

Fair call. I've just fired it up and tried it with Virtual Desktop and it was flawless, although i can't vouch for it's long term usage.
I tried the TP-Link AX50 first and it had better features, but was crashing my Virtual Desktop every time i started a new connection and then would cause stuttering in game that made it unplayable.

For what i want it seems like it should be capable enough as a switch/wifi with DHCP disabled.
