  • I've been looking for a gaming laptop around $1000 for a while now. Is it worth waiting for Black Friday? Or should I snap this up?

    • Depends on which retailer you're still waiting for? JB and Harvey Norman have shown their hand.

      Maybe Bing Lee, eBay, Amazon.

Edit. However, looks like HN have plenty of stock. You could wait it out.

      • That's true, this is the first time I've really paid attention to Black Friday deals so I don't really know what to expect

  • Can we throw in an extra stick of ram to get it to 16gb?

    • Yes, expandable up to 32gb

  • Screen is ips, any idea on the nits?

    • 250-280, screen is not that bad

  • Argh! So many gaming laptop I've woken up to. This looks like the best value/price of the lot so far. But there will be more…..right?

    • +1

Wait for Black Friday, it's gonna be more laptop sale

  • +1

it's a good option, although previous gen nitro 5 keyboard was impossible for me to type on, returned

the issue was that the keyboard was not sensitive enough, also keys need to be hit dead centre to register. during blind typing a lot of missed strokes. too annoying

also slow return to base warranty. it spent longer in transit and service centre than in my possession

good laptop though overall, I enjoyed it

    • No wonder quality is going down if people have such major flaws and still describe the product as good overall. Why would a manufacturer fix anything with such compliant sheep for customers?

      • -1

wrong? I returned it and got money back, and it went through all sorts of escalation managers at Acer

it's fine for gaming, but typing sucks, so good overall, just not good enough for me

        • -4

I would never call a laptop with a bad keyboard "good overall". That is a fatal flaw. If you felt compelled to return it how can you then call it "good overall"??? Are there a lot of people buying laptops that don't need to use the keyboard?!?!?

          • -1

            @syousef: be quiet! god

do you even read what I am writing lol

this is a gaming laptop. keyboard is good for gaming. typing is ok if a bit slow, and one can probably get used to it. blind typing didn't work for me

anyway, back to real life lol

            • @shabaka: Yes because we all like to miss clicks when we're gaming in the real world, and in the real world no one ever uses their gaming laptop to do anything other than gaming. Wow.

            • @shabaka: You be quiet if you’re going to talk rubbish. It can’t’ be good overall if it has a problematic keyboard. Anyway not sure if this gen model suffers the same problem - check reviews before buying.

              • +1

@MuddyClear: no you be quiet, I give my opinion and people start screaming at me, this is not normal

                • @shabaka: no one is screaming at you. Don’t go around telling people to be quiet when you don’t like it back. Syousef made a valid comment and you told him to be quiet.

    how is the battery life?

    • I'm also curious. Are all gaming laptops a case of requiring constant AC power source? How long can you go on battery for without any gaming?

      • +1

I can only speak for the models I've had (MSI in the past and Dell G7 now) and pretty much if you want to game you need to be connected to AC. If you play straight from the battery the graphic performance goes down significatively (FPS drop) and the battery tends to not last for long.

The idea of a gaming laptop it's to be able to take it with you anywhere easy, but to be used plugged in always. At least from my experience.

        • I wouldn't personally really bother gaming on battery as it would all throttle back from lack of watts to cpu and gpu. I'd say you'd get 2 to 3hrs at most running a game.

          • @Russell P: Thanks guys,

But if not gaming, just doing normal web browsing or other regular portable laptop stuff, would this be comparable?

I kinda want to multi purpose as a travelling laptop (not gaming) as well, but not sure if it's completely the wrong use case.

            • +3

              @L0zBargain: I pulled this from a review…

After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) where available and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. (We also turn Wi-Fi off, putting the laptop into airplane mode.) In this test, we loop a video—a locally stored 720p file of the Blender Foundation short film Tears of Steel—with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system quits.
The Nitro 5 more than doubled the next best systems' runtime. You won't see anywhere near 15 hours in actual gaming, but some unplugged gaming—along with a full day's productivity or streaming entertainment—is eminently possible.

        • How would you describe your experience with G7 as there is one from DELL now for 1750 with RTX2060, and i7?

          • @yeloneck: Really good. There are some rumors of overheating, but hasn't been the case for me. As long as is plugged the machine performs really really well. I use it for intensive gaming and VR.

  • nits anyone?

    • Head lice.

    • Im also looking. Similar models are 280 nits, but i dont want to be held accountable for the wrong info.

      • +2

Rated at 300 nits for 144hz model

I picked this up yesterday from HN in Newcastle. Needed an entry level gaming laptop for my son's birthday today and I was waiting for the sales. I added another 8gb ram stick before leaving the store which was helpful as I know 16gb of ram is really needed… cost me about $65 + $30 for HN to install on the spot. Great service!
Fired up and set up last night and only had time to test FFIV and Counterstrike. Blew my socks off for the cost. Fast and smooth with great FPS.
Screen looked fantastic in and out of games… my son was absolutely stoked :D

    • I'm tempted to pull the trigger on this, also didn't know HN can upgrade RAM on the spot

      • I was doing paperwork for 24mths interest free on GO card and it was all done b4 I finished. They can add a 2.5 harddrive or another NVME SSD as well if you want.

    • +1

Great to hear your're enjoying it, it's taking all my willpower not to grab it and wait for friday, though I'm not sure if there'll be a better deal around this price point.

  • $946.20 for those with business membership
    https://ibb.co/X45B0BY

    • +1

How do you get a business membership?

      • I'd also like to know :)

      • +1

I get it through Salary Packaging

    • Office works business membership don’t offer extra discount. Interesting!

  • Very tempted to get my partner to go for this one. She really only needs it for LoL and occasional Sims 4. She's toying with gtaV too, which this should be fine for. Doesn't really care about graphics too much.

I'll wait til Friday to see what else pops up but yeah, very tempting. Especially if I can download more ram later, and storage too if she needs it.

  • The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 works out about the same price after cashback. Any comparisons?

    • If it's the one with the 1650, this is better with the 1650ti.

      • I ended up going with the IdeaPad (4600H, 1650ti, 16GB RAM, 250nit 120hz) for $1050 after CB.
I might cancel if a better deal comes up.

        • The Lenovo is better! God job.

        • Which Cashback? As I don't think CB is paid unless the code is listed on the cashback site

  • Would this laptop be able to play Assetto Corsa Competizione?
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/805550/Assetto_Corsa_Comp…

    • Yes. Easily but definitely consider getting an extra stick of RAM for that Dual Channel goodness.

      • How/what is the best way to do this?

        • You unscrew the back and put a second sodimm in.

          • @Jenny Death: Good idea, do you need to match the brand or just the size and speed will do?

            • +1

@L0zBargain: You can mix all 3 of those parameters, but it's best to match speed and size. Brand doesnt matter too much (although on desktops it does matter a bit more).

    • Just got one. Yes it can run it. Please see link for the recommended settings result from systemrequirementslab.com/cyri

  • What is the Srgb coverage? It's kind important to me, thanks.

  • Is the below laptop worth the extra $200 compared to this one.

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/asus-tuf-15-6-inch-r7-3750h-…

    • +1

No, you are paying more money for a worse graphic card.

    • +1

      Biggest difference is graphics.
The Acer with a GTX 1650ti is far better than the Asus GTX 1650… very noticeable.
Wack another 8gb ram chip in the Acer and you are still ahead comparably on price and definitely on performance.

      • Hi, Dell G3 now on sale at the jbhifi only 899, use the gift card on hand around 760 dollar, which one more good?

        • Video in this laptop is better than the G3. Cannot comment on build quality, etc.

    • The ASUS Tuf line is known for really bad thermal management.

  • Can someone help me out here. I am looking to buy a laptop tomorrow. I'm not really much of a pc gamer, but I like to have a quality gaming laptop cos the dedicated cards enables me power my high end monitors for my job and occasional sim racing titles that I cant get on the play station platform. I am looking for a good laptop with enough display port options(Most here only have one HDMI port). Budget it $1000 or $1200 max.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

  • Damn, looks like they're out of stock now.

edit - must've been looking at a different one or a weird link, says available for delivery now. Sorry!

  • +1

I can still add to cart and it's showing in-stock at 2 stores near me. Bondi and Broadway.

  • How good is this to stream from? Pretty from HDMI(USB) input.

  • Oh Damn, I just paid $1280 at JB Hi-Fi for the same laptop with the only difference being 16Gb total RAM.

    I feel bad :(

  • How are the thermals on this unit?

  • +1

Grab another 8GB RAM stick here for $39 + delivery.

Cheers OP. Finally committed to it. Glad the deal ran a bit longer than originally expected.

  • Did anybody buy one? I've seen a comment about a dodgy keyboard not registering keystrikes unless dead centre.
