Didn't realise the pro's can now come with non pro chips. Wouldn't a Macbook Air be better then?

    • +4

Still worth it if you can afford it over the air. 120hz is a very nice upgrade, a shame it’s locked behind the pro variants though. Typical Apple

      • +1

That’s completely dependent on your use case if it’s worth it and 99% of people won’t know the difference between the screens unless they are side-by-side.

        • -1

If you've used a 120Hz+ display before you can definitely tell the difference from 60Hz

    • +14

Pro’s get Cooling, 120hz, Mini LED, more ports

      • Pro’s get Cooling

So the non pros just get very hot?

        • +2

          under load (rendering etc) yes
Cooling also gets better performance for higher end tasks as the Air’s will throttle performance to keep temps in line

          • @HardlyNormal: Under continued sustained loads they thermally throttle but they most definitely don't get "very hot". You can easily (like I do) run higher end tasks that aren't sustained processes and never thermally throttle a MBA, especially those over the last few years.

        • -3

          They throttle quite badly

          • +1

@deanylev: The base m4 pro only has one side fan, so can sound like a drone. Unlike the m1 and m2 base pros which are dual sided cooling and are usually silent.

            • @trevor99: did you mean to say base m4 air? Just wondering because someone above said the pro has better cooling solution

            • +1

@trevor99: Interesting, I just got a base M4 MacBook Pro for work and did notice it gets quite a bit louder than my M1 Max MacBook Pro ever does.

              • @deanylev: Nice 1 having an M1 max, I too have an M1 max 32gb 16 inch, and I'm keeping it. Only real m1 negs are hdmi 2.0 output instead of 2.1, and bluetooth 5.0 instaed of 5.3, but both don't bother me, and I use bluetooth all the time.

                • @trevor99: Yeah I have absolutely no reason to upgrade, M1 Max 32GB is an absolute beast. Screen and speakers are to die for.

Funnily enough I just bought a USB-C HDMI 2.1 adapter for mine - they are finally available without any firmware hacks.

                  • @deanylev: thanks that's good info :) Yeah it's just right for me, does everyday stuff effortlessly. Simple things like handling and rendering huge pdf files instantly for example.

            • +1

@trevor99: Apple always handicapped the low end Pros - lose a fan, lose a USB port.

With the M4 Pro you get the USB port back - but you still need the Pro processor for dual fans.

    • depends what you do really if you are a heavy video editor in final cut that is advanced you would want to go at least a m4 pro. but besides that m4 does a good job.

    • air is better only if you need something light (pro 14 is a chonki boi and don't ask me cause I got a pro 16 and it's above 2 kilos)

otherwise pro 14 is better everything. screen (120hz, mini LED), speakers, battery life, performance (thanks to active cooling), ports. I would say no contest, go pro

personally I started out with the simplest M1 Air and was so impressed that I dumped my intel laptop for good, and never touched windows laptops again

ended up returning M1 Air and got myself M1 Pro 16/1Tb 14 inch. year down the track sold that and got M1 Pro mbp 16 base (16/512), but that was restrictive too, so typing this on my M1 Max 64/2TB and I don't think I will need to upgrade for a few years..

    • i have the macbook pro 14 inch with the M4 Pro chip and 24gb of ram and 1tb of storage i have to say the last time i had this on sale it was about 3500 from HN its worth it though doesnt' slow down no matter what you do with it.

The MBA makes perfect sense for a lot of people despite what anyone in these comments will tell you. You don’t need to spend hundreds let alone thousands more to easily run photo or video editing, coding or programming, or any other process you can run on a MBP.

Sure the MBP has some nice features over the MBA but these features are not needed by 99% of people to complete whatever it is they need to do.

      • photo or video editing, coding or programming,..

do most MBP buyers do this?

        • I’d imagine a decent percentage of MBP users would fall into 3 categories:

          • Software engineers, heavy computational needs, high res video editing and content creation etc.

          • The price of the 14” MBP is close enough to the 15” MBA but they don’t actually need the additional benefits of the MBP.

          • People who just want the absolute best, regardless, even if it’s overkill. Which the MBP will be for 95% of people.

    • +4

      Have you heard of Google?

      • +5

Don't even need Google, just click the link and look at the pictures. Has 3 TB4 ports

  • Any other discounts/cashback/offers that can be stacked to bring this lower?

    • +5

You can get Officeworks to price beat 5%, which brings it down to $2,135.60. If you can get Officeworks gift cards at a discount (look at the gift card wiki page on OzBargain), that's another 2% so the final price is $2,092.89. Note for price beat if you want to pay by gift cards it is in store only. If over the phone, you can only pay by debit/credit card.

    • latitude Gift Card offer will get you $200 in gift cards

      • +5

Can I just say, (profanity) Latitude. Seriously. Do not finance with them. I would argue they are the worst 'credit card' company in Australia bar none. Between the data leaks, broken repayment system, broken app, broken dashboard, and complete lack of customer service, I would avoid anything to do with them, including getting finance to take advantage of interest free periods.

  • Lots of Apple's deals lately. I guess trump tariff is related.

      • +6

Have you walked past an Apple store lately?

      • +4

Tech products are generally not making any big leaps in performance or functionality lately, it's all just iterative updates, meaning there's no real need to upgrade your laptop or phone as frequently as in the past. Even more so since Apple rolled out their own silicon, these chips were such a leap in performance that people are holding on to their devices longer (I'm still rocking my M1 Air and it's honestly still ridiculously good for basic computing with great battery life). There's an argument going around that Apple actually made their post 2021 MacBooks too good and it's eating into their sales as people hold on to them for longer.

    • So Apple prices will increase in the USA because of the high increased China tariffs (and so less sales in the USA)…. And so Apple will dump its products in other countries…. Like here?

      HODL.

  • HardleyNormal can we price beat this at officeworks for $2,135.6?

    • +3

      yup

      • +1

        Thank you

    • +2

You want Harvey Norman to tell you if you can go to their competitor and get their competitor to price match them?

      • of course

      • I'm a freak for hat

  • +1

Is this better than an M2 pro MacBook Pro?

    • +5

      Yeah, increased by 2.

    • Quite similar tbh but i would get the M4 just cos it's newer.

  • +1

Could 100 humans take on a silver/black mac?

  • +1

    No nanotexture no deal

    • I have seen this with my own eyes, I personally don't like it plus my laptop always stay indoor so don't really need this feature

  • +1

    Got one for myself today.

Taking advantage of price beat at Officeworks and paying with gift cards which I got at 10% off brought down the effective price to $1922.

    I would say great deal.

  • Return m4 air that i got via aoc and get this? tough choice

    • Depends on the price difference between the two, what your workflow is and whether the Pro benefits are worthwhile to you?

    • Depends on use case but basic word processing and browsing id get the air, i have the 14 m1 max and its just heavy to bring around

  • Any deals on air m4 better than below:

Byod jb hifi with 3 yr repair for $235

Total for 256gb m4 air with 3 yr tech plan was $1780 but silver color choice only

  • 2.65kg, is it really that heavy?

From the Tech Specs section on Apple's website:

      • M4: 1.55 kg (3.4 pounds)
      • M4 Pro: 1.60 kg (3.5 pounds)
      • M4 Max: 1.62 kg (3.6 pounds)

Weight of the overall packaging, not the laptop itself

  • The Macbook pro/M4 Pro/24GB RAM/512GB HDD is a pretty good price at $2968 (price beat at OW for $2819), good if you need the extra RAM.

  • IMO buying from Apple is always preferred for ACL reasons if buying Mac for long-term use. Got mine as an Apple refurbished and it's just indistinguishable from new. Also for more intensive work do keep an eye on the refurbished 14" M4 Pro model, I recall it was $2800 and totally worth the extra price:

M4 Pro features doubled performance cores in CPU and 6 more cores in GPU. Plus you get 24G ram. I kinda regret not buying this.

  • Hi all, looking for a bargained price on the macbook air 15" with 512gb storage ands 16gb ram.

Want an upgrade, particular just a larger screen and more ram from my m1 13 inch with 8gb ram & 256gb storage, the product is great but would be nice to upgrade to more ram and storage .

    To be exact as below:

    10-Core CPU
    10-Core GPU
    16GB Unified Memory
    512GB SSD Storage footnote ¹

    • +1

$2159 from the Apple Education Store and can often find 10% Apple gift cards in the classifieds section on here making it $1943.

Not sure you’ll find better than that.

      • hmm, how do i do this, i dont think i have the education thing, but thank you!

      • Ive Selected this for $2519 with modification of the storage of 1TB:

Apple M4 chip with 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine
        16GB unified memory
        1TB SSD storage

Without Modification it would be: A$2,249.00:

Apple M4 chip with 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine
        16GB unified memory
        512GB SSD storage

This is the cheapest one with the 256 GB storage, price @ $1949 which is the one i believe you were referring to:
        16GB Unified Memory
        256GB SSD Storage footnote ¹
