      • just ask to pay $99, and they will gladly do it

        • +7

And then pay the balance via credit card? I admire your dedication. I love saving a few dollars, but there's a limit to what I'll do.

          • +2

@Charlie Dont Surf: you dont have to pay it all off then if you dont want to

I take half my bills in the first week, second lot later in the month,

$50 per month is $600 per year, worth it for me at the end to splurge my $600 (but im only on month 5)

          • @Charlie Dont Surf: Split into multiple $99 payments

            • @Meovel: Contributing to the frigging long queues at the post office…surely they wouldn't let you do it for more than a few taps/hundred dollars…smh…

              • +1

@John Kimble: There are self serve kiosks in the post office where you can pay your bills. No need to line up with the rest of the people posting stuff.

                • @NinongSmart: I haven't seen any around my area (Northwest Sydney). Lucky you.

              • +2

@John Kimble: Correct. How long is each wait and how much does it all add up in order to save $600. $2 at a time is 300 transactions a year. Even if you could do a transaction every 1 minute it is 5 hours of time. $120 an hour. I am sure the excuse is that I was going to the office 1.5 times a day anyways (assuming 200 working days a year).

                • @netjock: Work pays for my time to do this.

                  • @serpserpserp: Maybe you are like Will Ferrell in Semi Pro: you're owner, head coach and starting power forward.

2% from HSBC is the COVID version of racking up Qantas Frequent Flyer points on work travel expenses of 2020.

        • In TnCs not apply for part payment. Can you please confirm if that works for you?

Because they only apply to whole transactions, you can’t make part payments for the one transaction.

          • @Simply-Me: If its at the post office as long as the $ amount is less than $100 you are fine.
In fact if your bill is $180, just ask to make 2 separate payments of $90 paid by tapping, and they put it through twice

            • @Samsungnote10: Sorry to be a pain but are you absolutely certain this is the case? I don't know how the statements appear, but is your cash back linked directly to those transactions or are you perhaps earning $50 back a month on all your transactions with a total spend over $2500 not inclusive of your split payments for bills etc

Page 11 and 12 lists some exclusion criteria.

I'm uncertain of what government charges refers to. Does that mean I just need to avoid trying to pay tax and council rates with this?

              Thanks

              • +1

@VeeKTOR: it works for me, and has always
could it be a glitch? maybe

my guess is that aust post is considered a private company as opposed to government,

just go to the post office and try one transaction, it comes up as pending 2% straight away

    • -1

What sort of weak bills are you paying that are all <$100? This is a trash bank.

    • for me since I only use this account for bills,
i thought I might set it up for general savings use,
it required me to download the app, firstly there was like 2 diferent HSBC apps, that I couldnt tell which I needed,
after taking a wild guess, and getting it right, everytime I logged on online, it required me to get a security key from the app,
the security key kept on timing out or even if I entered the correct numbers, it wouldnt work,
support were useless, they had less idea than me,

in the end I deleted the app, unlinked it, and now I use the card to pay bills and I never touch it

    • you know you only get 2% cashback on tap and pay using Visa paywave, Apple Pay or Google Pay for eligible purchases?

online payments dont trigger the cashback if thats what you were referring to when you say you pay your bill that way?

  • tried to pay rates $99 tap and pay last year got 0% back so there are exclusions. maybe should try aust post next time as they waived the fees due to covid ?

    • You can't use it to pay government bills/charges.

  • +9

For those not aware, it's a $150 bonus for Bupa customers. I signed my wife and I up for an easy $300.

  • What is the FX rate used for purchases in foreign currencies - is it a wholesale rate or do they apply a spread?

    • +3

They apply a spread, it's not the wholesale visa rate

    • I'm pretty sure there's a small spread. Only used once though.

      • Their rates suck. I only use it when I really have to.

    • +3

I use TransferWise for foreign transfers, I wouldn't dream of trying HSBC.

    • Think I tried overseas to withdraw cash and it was visa rates.

  • So how does this compare to ING bank in terms of overseas transaction fees?
    Cheers.

    • Oh wow, wish I knew. I signed up to HSBC almost two months ago.
Any idea if you join Bupa late will you still get the cashback?

If not I'll just give them a quick call tomorrow

    • +2

I believe ING are the only bank that rebates overseas ATM operator fees.

      • Yes, I believe so too. Just need to remember that you need to meet your eligibility the month before you travel, but it's a great card for travelling.
Also make sure you ask the ATM to charge the foreign currency to your account/card (instead of the expensive ATM conversion rate).

      • Thanks~

  • +1

It doesn’t support asko instant transfer
But I notice when I transfer less than $1000 from Bankwest to hsbc it’s instant so it’s other method of transfer?
From HSBC send back to Bankwest Not instant.

    • Yea, from other bank to HSBC, <= 1000 is instant. But not the otherway around. However, if you have Beem It, I think you can use the transfer in Beem It to get instant transfer.

  • +3

No PayId and terrible UI are annoying, but 2% cashback is worth it.

  • +1

    Applied to them twice.
    Never heard back from them.
    Useless

    • It happened to me as well. But then I realised they actually already approved my account. But somehow they didn't notify me. Check your application on their website. If it's approved, go register their online banking and then you should be good to go. I applied for the debit card through online banking, and they sent me 2 a couple weeks apart. So I assume they will automatically send you one after account activation, but still allow you to apply for extra ones? Or maybe just their mistake.

  • -2

Not really a fan of them. Opened an account with the 2% Cashback highly intriguing me. Customer support is non-existent. They keep fobbing me off over the phone, and I have an open AFCA complaint against them right now.

    • +3

What did you expect from a bank that funds terrorists, criminals, cartels and war crimes?

      • +6

        Better deals?

The same level of service as Westpac and Commonwealth bank that does the same thing?

        • +1

"What did you expect from a bank that funds terrorists, criminals, cartels and war crimes?"

That wins the dumb comment of the year. Pretty much all banks have had problems in the past. It's not like criminals have the word criminal on their forehead and will make their actions super easy to spot.

          • -1

@clubhonda: HSBC has been implicated multiple times, with high level involvement. Get educated and get off the CCP's d!ck my friend.

        • I think one of them just replied to this comment 😅

          • -2

@AlphaC: Calling people dumb doesn't solve the issue. People just get angry.

It is a public service to guide people to sources of information regardless whether they were ignorant or they just have an axe to grind.

Problem with the world today is people are not finding balance of news they'd rather just keep on getting fed by social media more and more information to keep them online rather than in the interest of balance facts.

            • @netjock: I was not calling anyone dumb.
I was pointing out the coincidence that a poster with Honda in the name responded to a post about cars and dealers.

On hindsight I could have made that clearer :D

              • @AlphaC: I made that nick when I was driving a Honda and part of a car enthusiasts club, not being a car dealer which you couldn't pay me to do lol!

                • @clubhonda: Hondas r awesome. I had a City and it barely consumed any petrol and the boot space is yuuuuuuuge!

Pity they aren't very popular (Vs Toyota's, which are everywhere)

  • Is there a credit check done for this card?

    • +1

      no, it's regular debit card

  • +1

    New customer only

  • Is their any charges for paying in foreign currency online? How is the exchange rate? Similar to using ING?

  • my crypto.com card gives me 3% cashback on purchases (no max cap) and my tokens receive interest when I stake it in the wallet of 12% P.A

    • How long did it take you to receive your card? I'm still waiting for mine after many moons.

      • yeah they're having a shortage right now since they've changed their card manufacturer. It had something to do with the whole wirecard scandal. They've swapped to a singaporean company now. Mine arrived 1 month after applying for it, but that was back in May. I've been following the online forums and the eta seems to be anywhere from 1-3 months for Europeans.

        • aww geez no hope in me getting it anytime soon.

  • +1

Has been using this for a couple months now. Just got my $100 bonus today. It showed up on my account instantly after the condition was met. The cashback also show up instantly, so you know if there is a problem. Pretty good.

  • +3

ive done that, and i got the bonus, it was a pain tho, had to drive 100km to the branch in brisbane to confirm my identity, then 5 phone calls later account got activated.

got the bonus and uninstalled the app and threw away the debit card.

    • Thats rediculous, making you need to go in branch with covid around and all these precautions fed and state govt are doing in the first place to avoid moving around!

My thoughts on their awful tech experience from last year here on OzBargain: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/474273?page=2#comment-7599…

    Copied here also.

Wow, HSBC… the comments here don't lie, they have a terrible online banking experience (web and app). I'm not going to say the worse ever, because they were all crap back in the day, but I'll say worst experience in the last decade.

The sign up experience was obviously insane, with a pile of questions about job and income which were unnecessary for a non-credit application
Plenty of errors random error pages on both web and app
You don't seem to be able to sign in to both the app and web at the same time - they both detect another log in and log you out
You have to use their mobile app to get full access to the web banking, and see below
Their "secure digital key" thing is terrible in multiple ways
You need a password to generate it
It's generated using their own app rather than a standard way, e.g. Google's Authenticator app (this is common, but still stupid)
The requirements for the password (no special characters, only alphanumeric characters, and 6-9 characters, and limits on the repetition of characters) are limiting
You need to use a full password rather than just a pin to access the mobile app
    All looks clunky as hell

The offer is good, and the way my wife spends we'd collect the full $50/month on spending no doubt, but it seems unlikely that we'll actually use the cards, or retain the accounts after collecting the $100 credit because we'd have to use their banking apps.

  • +2

yeah, nah. overly complex application process for a transaction account.

  • +2

There's probly more new account applications from this post than from their actual ads lol

  • +1

Seriously, I could have applied for 10 jobs with absolute neat cover letters and earned over $2000 already by a paycheck by the time I finished the "specially decorated" HSBC application. Not sure what else free money will make me do in my life.

BTW just my opinion on the overall process- SH*TTY

By the time I reached final stage and finished it, the mobile application, I can't even login it's stuck for over 15 mins. Looks like HSBC has been ozbargained!

  • +2

Worst app ever…. Dont know what is their useless digital security key system… But it is crap…. Does not let u set it up as it errors out and stops u from using practically all function in the app without out… What all we have to do for 2% cashback 😤

    • Yep. Don't use HSBC. Worst net banking platform by a mile.

    • +1

haha Agree. But $150 (bupa signup) + 2% cashback is hard to miss. and I also noticed there is no 3 or 6 months expiry for cashback. Hope it can be ongoing thing.

  • So I can only start tap and pay once I receive the card? Anyway there's an option to activate a card online or in app?

  • +2

Why do they ask so many questions like where do I work, my job, income etc. Overly complicated compared to other banks which take less than 5 minutes to sign up.

  • I applied for one. Hope I can earn some extra cash. Love HSBC.

  • Just a reminder not all the shops process the payment as a tap and pay transaction.
If store has processed the payment as EFTPOS, you won't get any cashback… I know Priceline is one of them.
Anyone know if any other stores process their payment as EFTPOS too? So we can all avoid to use this card in those stores. Thanks

  • -2

    HAHAHA!!!

With the amount of compulsory questions they are asking about you (citizenship (dual or more), work situation, employer, employer's address, etc), I'll pass on the so-called $100 bonus.

They are THIEVING your data for $100 IF you deposit $2,000 for 3 months. Not to mention how deeply involved they are into BLOOSHED.

I don't call this free money.

    • With the amount of compulsory questions they are asking about you (citizenship (dual or more), work situation, employer, employer's address, etc), I'll pass on the so-called $100 bonus.

Citizenship is for US FATCA (US wants to tax all citizens even abroad and will sanction banks who do not comply), ATO also wants it so they can data match.

Work situation and employer. If you're a cleaner for say the government department but depositing $200k in cash a year then you might just be money laundering. Having done bank compliance training in the past, even your teller having a pleasant chat is giving them the chance to find and raise any red flags.

There are ways for banks to get that information out of you such as asking for payslips during credit card, loan, mortgage applications. How do you think all of this information ends up on your credit file? All the banks are on it feeding information into credit agencies and ATO.

      • -2

        Glad you’ve been trained

We are talking about an everyday account here, so please don’t mix up everything

        • We are talking about an everyday account here, so please don’t mix up everything

I suggest you are mixing it up.

Easiest way to money launder is to use personal accounts. You don't open a company account called "Middle Eastern Terror Financing Pty Ltd"

          Read up on Westpac

          FinCEN files

          Money transfer scams

You might be clean but there are a minority that is trying to exploit any loopholes that there is, hence the pain for all of us. I don't like it either but there is a reason why. Don't bank, stuff it under your mattress. Not my concern but I am not a fan of disinformation.

          • -3

            @netjock: 👎👎👎

  • Anyone ever used one of these accounts for depositing physical USD?

Still have some left after returning from abroad earlier in the year, but wasn't really looking to change it into AUD (at least yet). I'd be keen to hear if there are any 'traps' on that front?

  • The service of this bank is terrible. All terms are not competitive with other local banks. They seemed very money-driven and treat customers very differently. If you think you could open an account here and withdraw there for convenience sake, You would have made a huge mistake and all accounts treated separately, they have all reasons for you. To be very honest, keep away from these people.

    • If you think you could open an account here and withdraw there for convenience sake

There is a London branch for Commonwealth bank. I tried talking to them once and they were useless too.

Just like Australia has Privacy Act and Europe has GPDR they are both same concept but different application. You can't just wonder into Europe and expect the same process to apply.

  • +1

Have bank accounts with them, their App and online banking has improved (previously was average), phone banking to me is OK last time they did solve my problem with patience call centre.

For those who dont know, they were previously the second biggest bank in the world, their foot print is big in UK & Hong Kong, Australian big 4 banks are relatively small compare to them in size if you count the global net worth. Obviously Australia is not their main market, hence the present / service is smaller compare in UK or Hong Kong.

  • 2% cashback on the tap and pay is so much better than the zip spend $1000 get $30 back promo.

    • I concur.
App is really bad (definitely compared to all the rest out there), but I just use it for tap&pay <$100.
Have an automatic transfer each month just to meet the criteria.

  • +1

Be warned - Used to be an HSBC Premier customer - this is quite possibly the worst bank to deal with out of all the majors in AU.

    • I also have a HSBC credit card, that gives me the best points

however, first year they were supposed to give me a fee free as part of the promo and bonus sign up points, multiple follows ups, multiple "yes we have credited them to your account" within 200,000 business days,
never got it, went to the ombudsman, got it in the end plus $100 gesture of good will,

Earlier this year, get a generic email requesting payslips, supplier invoices (Im a god damn personal user), passports
call up and ask what this is all about, and got told to ignore it, this came up because a purchase I had made of $2000 was the same amount as a payment I had made later in the month! I was like wtf.

a couple of weeks later, Hsbc contact me and ask me "will I often continue to make purchases of the same amount as a payment?" once again, wtf!

then I applied for the HSBC savings acc on this deal, didnt get the 2% as supposed to

then a month later a reminder that I needed to provide the info requested above, called HSBC, they said in writing, dont worry about it, its been closed
a month later, another reminder, another call to a supervisor who writes me on letter head to ignore the msg and its an error,

a few weeks later, both my CC and savings account are stopped, and I cant use them, cant transfer funds in/out of the savings,

quite angry, I send all the documents except supplier invoices,
a week later, the documents all come back to me unopened, (not sure if it was returned mail or Aust post error)
      resend
a week or two later, I contact and they say yes recevied, docs fine in writing, and your account will be unsuspended shortly,

a few weeks later, call them again, and they say, they never received the documents

contact AFCA and file a complaint, they replied promptly and the sydney hsbc member was efficient,
demanded compensation for every day my accounts were suspended,

in the end, got my 2% bonus owed, $99 annual fee refunded for 2 years, plus $200 compensation

      what a ride that was
so now I ensure that I have as little phone/email contact with them, ive uninstalled their app, keep as little $ in the savings and only use it for bills,

  • If you're with Bupa and use their link you get $150 - wish I saw it before I got the $100 bonus lol

I've been using my account for many months without issues, for the 2% cashback.

Only wish their app would show you available balance straight away (you need to click into the account and details to be sure of the amount you have available)

  • +1

worst bank in the world. for the sake of your own sanity avoid dealing with these clowns.

  • I want to do this but I feel bad signing up, taking the money and then doing nothing with it lol.

I can't see myself use it as I use my ING debit card and Amex Platnium for the Qantas points.

    Someone talk me into it.

    • +1

after you experience the sign up process, your sympathy will evaporate in a second

      • Ahah, that bad? Is cancelling the card just as bad?

  • Received my card, activated, transferred $2K and eligible for 2% cashback straightaway.

    • May I ask, is it the global saver account that you need to transfer into? I ended up with three accounts for some reason.

  • Applied, never heard anything back…
