    • It looks like a poor conversion rate to me. It seems to be about 1.75% difference from the mid-market rate.

I was going to use it to store GBP for an upcoming trip but I'm not going to use it to convert from AUD to GBP. I'll use something like Transferwise to do the conversion and send it back to the account as GBP. Unless someone else has a better suggestion…

      • Good Boy Points?

      • ING and Macquarie seem to be the only cards I know that refund International transaction fees and use just the visa or mastercard daily rate and not adding a 2.5%

  • So is the consensus that the $100 is worth the stress of the sign up process or no?

    • Wasn't stressful for me at all, but then again my application was approved immediately. If they insisted I send through documents to verify ID etc. I certainly wouldn't have bothered proceeding.

      • Cheers miq,

Did you use a passport for the I.D?

        • Nah mate, just me NSW drivers’ license

  • +1

Use passport for id cgeck. Everything else fails and need to visit branch or send by post.

I applied 1rst with DL, it always fail.
I applied 2nd time with same details with passport id and got verified successfully.

I will leave my first application open till they expire it since the other was already approve.

    • Good tip.

I just applied, it was relatively painless, approved instantly.

Their mobile platform is another thing….I don't plan to use it.

      • Good luck getting your money back without the mobile app!

        • Edit: Okay, I can see why now. Thanks for the heads-up.

I will wait to see if the app works better/works at all in a few days before moving money in.

    • +1

      "Everything else fails"

      Wrong.
I used my DL and was approved instantly.

  • Just signed up, was approved instantly. I still feel a bit apprehensive about this, even though to start with Ill only be trying to make use of the deal. It doesnt have the reputation other banks have and had lots of questions, nothing too intrusive. I did not add TFN or accurate work info. I said I worked at a popular fast food outlet..

    • +3

we should just say work at ozbargain.com.au

  • Just to confirm, to make the deal work. You have to deposit $2000 for 3 months, but can you get the money out again right away? Literally in and out? As for the 2% cash back. Do you get that cash back right away? And its only for us on tap and pay transactions? meaning you would only be able to get $50 a month. $2500 in tap and pay transactions?

    • It doesn't seem to be instant as far as I can see. My guess is it would be calculated at the end of the month since you have until the last day of the month to put in your 2k?

  • in regards to the $2000 deposit, if i deposit the $2000 into it on the 8th of August, does that mean for the second month, I also need to do it on the 8th of September? Or can I do the deposit for the second month on the 1st of September?

    • no it's per calendar month

  • Does anybody know if I'm eligible for this if I still have a day to day transaction account from back in 2014? I never bothered to close it as you need to go to a branch!

edit: seemed to have found the answer. will close my account. Should give me more than 6 months before this promo expires. not that it'd exist by then anyway.

    • Not according when I called…

  • finally i can open, online. just 2 seconds and approved lol…

  • Can I set up 2 accounts, 1 for me & one for my partner & transfer $2000 back & forth between these two accounts and both are still eligible for the promo? Cheers

  • To those got instant approval, do you get the account information by email/sms to be able to log into your account?

I was in limbo stage since last Thursday and got no confirmation. I then called up to the customer support and the guy there said he going to resubmit the application (he didnt know why my application got stuck in the queue). Within 3 minutes, i got the welcome email but no information on how to setup registration for online access.

Should I wait for the actual welcome paper?

    • I received an email saying to register for online access, get your last 3 digits of your BSB and your account number, otherwise retrieve those details with your application reference code.

I applied on Thursday and the card arrived today (Monday).

      • Thanks mate. I re-read the welcome email and saw the instructions as you said (was only flip through early). All good now that I got into my account. Now start setup schedule for "laundry" money :)

    • I got no details in the email but I did get a confirmation, and also had the details when it was complete. You are a bit stuffed if you didn't copy them down though.

I just do not understand how such a massive global bank with so many resources creates a web banking and mobile app experience that makes even the worst of the big-4 Australian banks look amazing

    • I thought people were whinging but honestly its terrible! And also the system of how it operates, needing the 2 separate passwords, makes it so complicated. Very slow too!

    • You'd find that typically the LARGER ones are worse. Levels of bureaucracy, compliance, complexity etc etc.

    • can not agree more

  • +2

First impressions of the app and netbank leave me nervous to deposit $2000 in. Theres something untrustworthy about this bank and the layout and login system is slow and outdated. First impression was, I will only use this for the $100 and then not use again. ING, Macquarie, Commonwealth All seem so simple and more modern than this one.

    • Deposit $2000 per month for 3 months

Is a “month” referred to as a “calendar month”?

So if I open my account on the 28th, deposit $2000 on the 30th, then deposit $2000 on the 1st of the next month - does this satisfy 2x of the 3 deposit requirements?

    • +1

Yes usually, per month is per calendar month

  • +3

This bank has a bad track record and serious fundamental issues. The cracks are starting to get worse. Avoid. The crap mobile and web interfaces are a non-issue in comparison.

Transferred $2000 from ing to hsbc account late last night and it was there at about 11am, transferred immediately back to ing and it was back there at about 5.30pm. Got an email to say I am elligable for the 2% cashback deal so I am sure it worked.

    • Turnaround is impressive. I assume it can be in same day.

  • Is this saving account? Can I transfer out the money after 3 months? Asking because there is Visa logo on the card.

And I suppose there won't be any credit check on the application?

    • +1

Its a debit card, works like a credit card but with no credit history checks etc. Pretty sure you an transfer in, and right out in the same day.

      • -1

        Thanks @drspy00.

Now eligibility question: Does that 3 x $2000 deposited need to be there for the whole 3 months or as long as we deposited 3 X $2000 in 3 consecutive months … we can then just transfer it out again?

        • +1

No you can transfer in and out. I wouldnt have bothered if that was the case if you had to leave it there.

          • @drspy00: Sorry, if this is a silly question. I've got a disability so I'm slow. Do you think if we transfer back and forth a few times we would still get $100? Eg transfer $1k back and forth a few times a month over 3 months.

            • +2

              @WordsToSayIt:

Eg transfer $1k back and forth a few times a month over 3 months.

Not a silly question. Since the requirement is $2000 a month, if you only have 1K to move around, this month (Aug), you deposit $1K, withdraw it, deposit the $1K again, as long as you do all this before the end of Aug.

The number of deposits or withdrawals are irrelevant, as long as the total deposit is $2000 or more in the month.

Then, repeat this process in Sep, and Oct.

      • nah, im just a small potato against hsbc. i will just close that global account now and move on. its just common, big company, new promo, didnt inform all staffs properly.. well, i called again and the 3rd confirmed "brand new hsbc, new new new, or, existing but doesnt have ACTIVE account in the last 6 months"

        • … such a waste of time

  • They sent my card to the address on the credit card I had with them and closed 18 months ago, not the address I entered while applying for the account.

  • Great deal who doesn't want free $100 !! , if u have a partner that's free $200 , good money!

  • can i transfer 2000 from my own accounts every month ? or does it have to come from my company / salary ? thanks

    • Anything as long not from the same your HSBC account

  • I was approved on the spot but the wife couldn't be identified by equifax, so I guess we'll just have to be happy with 1 x $100. Good deal!

  • This bank does my head in!!!

Application has been stuck in processing since Thursday last week so I gave them a call today only to be on hold for 10mins. I finally get someone and explain the situation, get put on hold for another few minutes and then get told my application has been escalated to a colleague who isn't currently in the office but will call me back soon to proceed with the application.

When I asked, soon apparently means next week some time as the colleague is due back some time then and it would appear to be beyond the realms of possibility for someone else to assist me….

    • +1

They are useless. I submitted my app a week ago and still haven't received confirmation the account is open.

Tried calling them at 7:30pm one day and they said the application's team closes at 7pm. So I called back the next day at 6pm and the operator told me the application's team closes at 5:30pm.

Never taken this long just to open a transaction account.

Wow, HSBC… the comments here don't lie, they have a terrible online banking experience (web and app). I'm not going to say the worse ever, because they were all crap back in the day, but I'll say worst experience in the last decade.

    • The sign up experience was obviously insane, with a pile of questions about job and income which were unnecessary for a non-credit application
    • Plenty of errors random error pages on both web and app
    • You don't seem to be able to sign in to both the app and web at the same time - they both detect another log in and log you out
    • You have to use their mobile app to get full access to the web banking, and see below
    • Their "secure digital key" thing is terrible in multiple ways
      • You need a password to generate it
      • It's generated using their own app rather than a standard way, e.g. Google's Authenticator app (this is common, but still stupid)
      • The requirements for the password (no special characters, only alphanumeric characters, and 6-9 characters, and limits on the repetition of characters) are limiting
    • You need to use a full password rather than just a pin to access the mobile app
    • All looks clunky as hell

The offer is good, and the way my wife spends we'd collect the full $50/month on spending no doubt, but it seems unlikely that we'll actually use the cards, or retain the accounts after collecting the $100 credit because we'd have to use their banking apps.

    • Agree with everything you say, it just doesn't seem a good or trustworthy option even. If it had npp/osko I would think about it more though to make use of the 2% cashback! I dont really want to keep money in there interest free for that purpose though. Its even slow to login. Banks like ING, Mazquarie are so much better with truly no fee cards and npp support, easy to login without jumping through hoops or errors too.

  • Is it easy to close?

  • -1

Got mine opened straight away, but the application form is seriously retarded. Had to make up information on income and employer because I do not see how this is relevant and appropriate for them to ask. Looking forward to closing this as soon as I get my $100.

    • -1

Suspect you had the right idea to do that — I put (close to) my actual income, which is probably much lower than they would like from a customer, and I'm still waiting on approval.

      • +1

Doubt that it's a factor; my two $1 applications were approved immediately.

  • Hmm, tried funding my account with the details, but transfer bounced back.

Confirmed today with HSBC applications team that their application process and online banking system provided me with an incorrect BSB..

Online banking page still displays the incorrect number. At the moment I'm going to wait despite having the correct BSB on hand now, written on a piece of paper..

My hopes of getting that sign up bonus and cashback to go through hassle free are dimming lol.

  • +1

Omg signing up was such a bad process and now I've got the card the online registration is too what a nightmare.

    • +1

Wait for when setting up anything from pin, payee etc that requires secure code from your phone

      • +1

And wait for when you reformat your phone, you can't login with the new phone without generating code from old phone. Must call.

  • Just to confirm, if I deposit $2000 into the account on the 12th of this month, can I deposit on the 2nd of the next month or does it need to have a 30 day gap in between deposits?

    • +1

Anytime during the month is fine.

      • +1

        Thanks!

  • +1

It'd been pretty easy to open an account and then deposit, few days later I got a card in the mail all right. But their online banking is FUBAR!!! The clunkiest registration/logon process ever, multiple passwords, one of them is of specific length with no special chars allowed. It is a galore of poorly designed interfaces with funky functionality. And then to my astonishment I discovered I still have a credit card with them! The one I closed 3 years ago… Now when I attempt to "Close my Credit Card Account" it simply tells me "Sorry, this function is currently not available to your type of card".

    • +2

I can put up with clunky or outdated interface but WTF with all the security hoops.

Is app for drug dealers or something? Why two separate passwords to login (one on mobile, one for desktop)? Three options in Generate Security Code always confused me.

The moment i get my $100, i'll close the account immediately.

      • There is the 2% cashback which hopefully is an on-going offer.

        • I would pay 2% extra to avoid ever having to use their website and app again. It is horrible

  • Has anyone seen info added to their credit file as a result of this application? I think my employer has been added. (I get the alerts from Credit Simple).

    • I hope not, I didnt think it could affect credit. I put all false info of employer as its none of their business so just made up random pizza shop names!

  • +3

Well I have to say forever in my life, I couldn't open a bank account, and that is with HSBC. It's not because of eligibility, it's because the rude and arrogant attitude of HSBC employees towards new customers. Here is the story. My mum was trying to open this global currency account with HSBC. We did online application and all went well except need to go to Canberra branch to verify her identity. We went there with all supporting documents and expect it is a simple and quick turn around, but HSBC Canberra branch employee completely pissed us off and shocked us that opening a bank account could be that complicated and difficult. The lady serving us was not verifying my mum's identity but rather telling us something we already know from the web (like this fee that fee, interest rate blah blah blah) and also asked a lot of questions which are stupid. For example, why my mum wants multiple foreign currencies in the global currency account? I reminded her please verify the identity and those information we already know and my mum has the right to open up to 10 foreign currencies in that account so please speed up the process. The lady said to us every customer wanted to open account with HSBC has to stay there and listen to her for minimum an hour. I said to her, fine but please hurry up a bit as I do have to go to work and can't stay that long. Then she refused to serve us and said if we want to open the account, we have to make another appointment. Then she walked away and left us with her branch manager. I talked to HSBC Canberra branch manager but that lady is even more rude and asked us to leave. I was shocked HSBC employees could treat new customer like that. Such thing never happened in other banks. I have to say, HSBC, look at how empty in your Canberra branch. If that is your service standard, how could new customer come?

    • +2

this is prob one of the worst banks around trust me

the people serving you at the branch are dumb robots and so bloody old school

as soon as i get my $100 i m out! rubbish bank as always

i mean look at their interface of their website, its from like 5+ years ago

They should go look at cba, nab and see what 2019 apps should looks like

    • +1

Wow that's appalling. Post it on their Facebook page.

    • +1

So sorry to hear your experience was so unpleasant. It must be branch-specific. In contrast, my branch experience was really good, cannot fault it whatsoever. Cust personnel was polite, helpful, printed account info out for me, even gave me her card so she can be contacted if any issues etc.

  • Can the $2000 be transferred out shortly after been deposited without forfeiting the $100 bonus?

    • Read from the top, page one you'll find the answer

      • Thanks mate

  • after all the interrogating questions i finally got the damn card

now the next q is, what is my bsb ac no internet banking login details??

i keep getting a bunch of email or mail about you need to log in, but HOW when these dinosaurs wont give me some details to start off the registration?

how did everyone else receive their login /bank details?

    • +1

If you still have your application number check the status of your application and on the same page you might be able to see your account no and BSB details .Hope this helps

  • I am just a little confused. People are saying 3 calendar months, so that should mean depositing on August 24, September 1 and October 1 should work yup?

    • Yeap, should be fine.
