Spending ~$50 extra because it has a USB-C port at the back when USB-3 to USB-C cables exist, and cost a dollar or two, boggles the mind. It's still a spinning disk that doesn't saturate USB-3. It isn't any faster.

    • +1

most laptops have at least 1 usb-c port. mine is 2 years old and has 3 of them with no usb-a ports.

this appeals to me because I dont need a dongle/adapter or an additional cable to connect it straight to my laptop.

I would suspect it appeals to more people than just myself for the same reason.

      • So you're happy buying a hard drive that comes with the exact cable you are after if it costs 33% more, when the cable costs 2% more and can be purchased separately?

Why are you on this website man? It seems you're happy to pay more for the exact same product?

If you said you like the metal case on this one rather than plastic on the cheaper ones then OK, fine. But to say you don't want to purchase a $2 cable because you are happy paying an extra $50 if it's included with the hard drive boggles the mind.

the model here is the ultra.

they make a similar product with dinosaur USB ports. its the non-ultra Passport.

          https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07VTW2LPX/

the price difference is $4. not $50

          • @Laserface: You're giving the RRP. Here it is for $50 difference:

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/587316

You're welcome to use the search function to see that the going rate for a 4TB external is ~$100 on sale which happens around once a month for the last year or so.

            Fools and your money, eh.

            • +1

@studentl0an: the actual saving on the Scorptec item is $99 since its OOS and you cant actually buy it.

              • @Laserface: If you use the search function you will see that 4TB portable HDDs go on sale for around $100 every month, sometimes more often.

They come with the USB-C cable too!

I really hope people search what I'm talking about and don't take you on face value, you're horrible for saving money.

                • @studentl0an: Im not even buying one, I just thought your comment of 'buy a different model and then buy a compatible cable separately like you're buying a Printer in 2002' was completely and utterly stupid.

not everyone is you, or has your opinion. thank god for that!

EDIT: and additionally, if i was to buy your recommended model and a 'cheap' cable seperately, it would NOT be a USB-C to USB-C cable as the non-ultra Passports do not have a USB-C port on them. If I was to buy what you suggested I would have an additional cable to carry which is precisely WHY you would buy the ultra over another device.

                  • @Laserface: It's the same interface, USB3. As you maybe (but are most likely not) aware a HDD can't saturate anyway. Again, as you may be aware it's the same transmission protocol also.

It makes no difference at all if the connection at the hard drive end is USB-C or USB-3 if the end that plugs into your computer is USB-C. Which both have. They both have the same amount of speed and power delivery to the hard drive.

To call USB-C a '2002 printer' protocol when it's the exact same protocol over a different connector that is backwards compatible, shows just how horrible you're body of knowledge is on this topic.

I highly suggest anyone considering taking your advice to research it.

                    • +1

@studentl0an: I am fully aware a platter drive will not saturate USB3.0 this is not up for debate.

the argument I am making is one of convenience. I do not want adapters or multiple cables, for a number of reasons. you lose them, adapters break, etc etc etc. travelling simple and light is a big benefit.

This device has USB-C. my other devices do too. One cable type required to connect all my stuff without adapters is simple. I might need 2 of them, but that means I have a spare if I lose one or one breaks.

why would I buy a cheaper drive without a USB-C port and then buy a separate cable that is also not USB-C and thus an additional cable i have to carry?

edit: and you dont seem to understand my printer cable reference so you are too young to be telling me anything about technology.

                      • @Laserface: If you think it's worth $50 premium for a cable then I don't think you belong on this website. That other $2 cable is just as convenient, and they come with the other drives anyway. You don't even need to purchase an additional cable so you're happy paying $50 extra to not lose the cable.

You can get 25 more cables for the price difference if you're scared of losing cables!

Now you're going to argue against me by saying I'm too young and therefor don't know what I'm talking about? (mod: removed inflammatory remark)

                        • @studentl0an: Alright, that'll do studentl0an / Laserface. The argument is starting to become personal, let's just accept that different people have different preferences. Time to move on.

                          • @scrimshaw: All good but I'm interested to you know your personal thoughts about the issue, scrim?

Do you think it's good advice to purchase this hard drive for a $50 premium because it has USB-C?

  • +1

putting cable drama aside, cheaper at amazon

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07VTW2LPX/

  • +2

Way too much. Was $99 at Scorptec a few days ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/587316

    • is it an ultra???

but cheap drives won't last long before OOS no matter what they are.

Good luck if able to get a hand just even one.

      • They use the same internal drive. The difference is the enclosure is metal with the ultra, so it would transfer vibrations and shock to the drive moreso than a plastic one would.

        • -1

I really doubt hard plastic would insulate against vibrations anymore than metal would.

          • -2

@[Deactivated]: It really does, have a read up on the way vibrations travel through metals as opposed to plastics.

Usually the metal drives like the Lacie rugged and Sony ones have a massive TPU silicon sleeve around to protect from vibrations and drops. Metal isn't nice to components inside if it gets dropped.

Really dude you're going to downvote me for providing the correct info? Well 2 can play at that game!

            • -1

              @studentl0an:

It really does, have a read up on the way vibrations travel through metals as opposed to plastics.

That might be the case in theory but I doubt it would have any practical difference in this application. Have you ever shucked an HDD? They're insulated with rubber.

Post your source if you have anything that says different, other than your opinion.

No HDD is going to do well if you drop it. 'Rugged' plastic drives with silicone covers are a thing too - the fact that silicone covered aluminium HDDs exist means nothing regarding their reliability.

@[Deactivated]: Why does metal vibrate more than plastic:
                https://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2017/06/23/why-does-metal…

Why plastic is better for phone durability (i.e. component survival) than metal or glass:
                https://www.androidauthority.com/build-materials-metal-vs-gl…

Yes, shucked many. 1mm rubber grommets are not exactly great insulation. As you may be aware there are very thin hard drives too, ones with 7mm z height that forgo those grommets entirely so they enclosure is less than 10mm. I recently got the one from Auspost for $80 for a 4TB portable external and shucked that, which did not have those insulation grommets. So half nearly half the cost of this listing and it came with a USB-C cable too…

As I wrote all the rugged hard drives come with giant TPU silicone sleeves around them. Of course they come in plastic too, because plastic is a more forgiving material than metal when it comes to long term durability.

I really don't see why you are downvoting my correct information, it's helpful to others and downvoting correct information is unhelpful to the community at large.

  • Why is this a deal? I found normal price for Toshiba one in officeworks is cheaper $139:
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/toshiba-4t…

Is it because the Toshiba one is slower?

    • i would rather to pay 10 more on WD against Toshiba.

      • Why? Is Toshiba HDD not reliable?

    • +1

The drive in this deal is type c to type c, which might be more convenient for some people but at a bit higher price. Current most external hdd will have USB micro b port on the drive means an additional cable to carry around.

      • -2

Buy 25 of those cables for the price difference.

Or buy one and have $48 in your pocket for more bargains, as this is a bargain website.

        • +1

I don't know how you come up with $2 a cable… I hardly see any usb 3.0 converter to usb-c at that cost, from cheap chinese supplier??? wait 3 mths??? lol

and $50 cheaper to get a 4TB ext HDD. Well if only you are able to grab one… mostly OOS in few hours rush once promo start…

          • @thomalfa: Well yeah but it's 3 weeks not 3 months.

They also come in the box for the other ones, for free, on a hard drive that costs often nearly twice as less as this one.

            • -1

              @studentl0an: That's $4, buddy.

              edit: nice edit.

              • @[Deactivated]: Here's one for $3

My mistake though, $3 apparently is a lot closer to $50 than $2 according to the people who upvoted this deal.

That isn't even the sale price either.

                • -1

@studentl0an: You're missing the point. Not everybody wants to carry around a specific cable. Do you neg USB-C monitor deals?

            • @studentl0an: it's more than AUD2… the shipping cost itself is USD4.93 + USD0.87 from Australia

              from CHina USD2.29 + USD0.61

              check it out yourself

              • @thomalfa: A) No. It's AUD$1.71 + 1.21 postage = AUD$2.92
                https://i.imgur.com/JmQ3A8o.jpg

                B) You're splitting hairs now. The cable is cheap as chips not even on sale.

Yes I think carrying around an extra cable is worth $50 in my pocket, I think you would have to be kind of very lax to the point of not being in the spirit of this website with your money to think otherwise.

I've provided articles as to why plastic is a better material for having a hard drive in than metal, and I've also provided links to the cable for less than $3 not on sale. I think others with a more rational thought process when selecting a hard drive will see these and realise this deal, is a bad deal. Fools and their money, however.

    • I think it's brand preferences… probably quality and experience from users…

it's like you're buying a merc why not toyota or kia…

      why people love to pay double for a merc… they're all just a car with 4 wheels… not 6 or 8 wheels…

      • -2

It's an external hard drive that has the same internal drive as the ones that cost half the price on sale. It offers no additional performance, storage, or anything really besides the connector at the back.

Maybe if you compared a Toyota, to a Toyota with a USB-C cable it would be an apt comparison.

        • -1

no different with cars… it made from same materials underneath…. metal alloys pvc pe pp pet… you name it…

it just being branded with brands… with quality and finishes… and the luxury

similar to here… WD vs Toshiba… it just brands… assuming usb-c as the luxury

          • -2

@thomalfa: You're delusion now. The most expensive rugged external hard drives are wrapped in soft TPU plastic for a reason. Have a good day. Enjoy throwing your money down the toilet, but stop telling others it's a good idea because it's a really bad idea.

            • @studentl0an: I didn't neg you…

but i still believe in branding… even though you can say what's inside are merely the same… there's a branding for a reason… otherwise everything is just the same.
