        • You can use Crossover.

  • Do iPads go on sale?

  • So these prices are the same as education pricing from the apple store it seems.

    • +1

No, the edu discount is less than 10% on many models

      • Only benefit is being able to get 16gb versions

    • Edu is around 5%

      • Isn't uniday 11%?

        • Yes, base MacBook Air is $1410.20. If you manage to get him/her gift cards from woolies @10% off and using zip pay you can potentially have for around $1160 (you’d need to be very like and get 11 gift cards @$90 using zip pay to knock off 10pc -total $891- and then potentially get another 3 cards @90 with another card -total $270+891=$1161)

          • @fozzie: 1410.20 only showing in Apple Edu store,…JB will not price match this

how can u use Him/Her gc on Apple Edu store ?

            • +1

@ggfatty: Yes they will match, you can’t use cards online only jb stores. Other users have said they match (might need to show student Id)

  • Silly me got cheap vouchers and still no stock of Mac Mini :(

  • +1

I just received the M1 Air 16GB/1TB at education price (around $2300). Very nice, but obviously there’s some functionality that is TBA, specifically virtualisation of x86 64 bit systems.

Disk speed is decent on the 1TB model: 3000MB/s write, 2700MB/s read.

    • I have the Macbook pro M1 with 16gb and 1tb storage I didn't know jb hifi accepted student discounts.

I paid full price from apple at $2899

      • Nah I ordered from Apple and followed the bouncing ball for edu pricing. You can’t get custom config a from JB, just 8gb RAM with either 256gb and 512gb disk.

  • Performance wise is there much difference between Air and Pro? Going from a late 2012 MBP that just won't die so I guess both will be quite a bit faster.

    • +1

Check out the videos on https://www.youtube.com/c/MaxTechOfficial

They will give you a really good idea on what you should choose.

Spoiler. Usually the Air will be just as good, unless you are a serious pro user. 8GB is probably fine too, as it acts like an Intel machine with 16GB.

      • I agree with you re what the reviews say about “8GB being like 16, more than enough for consumer level”

… but my real life experience with current versions of (intel) office and (optimised) chrome maxes out the 8GB easily and the Mac pages to disk a lot. No real noticeable performance issues but did kind of surprise me that even without complex computing tasks the 8GB got ate up.

        • +1

Paging isn’t a massive concern with such fast disk speeds though - see my post above.

      • +6

Yeah from what I gathered the differences are:
        1. The MBP has a brighter screen (500nits v 400nits)
        2. The MBP has slightly larger battery and charger
        3. The MBP has active cooling and fan so it is able to perform better for longer sustained tasks (approx 15% better) - where the MBA will throttle to preserve heat (note this will also apply to gaming - some FPS testing shows a 25% drop after 10 mins)
        4. The MBP has one more GPU core which gives about 10% better GPU performance based on testing (but note above fan testing)
        4. The MBP has better quality mic + speakers (from the tests of speakers I've heard the MBP has clearer more defined mids/bass, where as the MBA seems quite trebly and tinny)
        5. The MBP has the touch bar (love/hate relationship for some people)
        6. The MBA is slightly thinner at one end but thicker at the other (the sloped design may be easier to type on depending on desk height) but the MBP is still relatively thin.

At the 512GB size the price difference is about $300 (or 17%) is it worth it to pay that extra amount? Not sure it's tough and really depends on your usage. If the price gap was say $200 then the MBP would seem a better buy for the slight increase in performance and slight upgrade overall.

I went with a base model M1 MBA upgraded from a late 2012 i5 MBA with 4gb of ram. Very happy.

Short answer, you don't need the Pro unless you spend all day exporting 4K videos or hundreds of 42MP RAW photos, and even then you will only be saving a few minutes here or there. Just go the Air.

Coming from a 2012 MBP you will be blown away, all the tech reviewers are and most of them work on the latest +$10k Mac Pros :-)

I love how much you salivating dogs get frothy over a 10% Apple discount.

    Back to the kibble

    • Clarus says "Moof! Enjoy your depreciation."

  • If you can wait, the next version should have a new form factor, but the performance gains are here right now.

Just price beat at Officeworks Milton (Qld) - $1367. The last one that Officeworks had in stock was rose gold… If I use this in public other men will probably try and hit on me.

    • Hahaha

    • +1

Not that there is anything wrong with that….

    • Are you sure you got an M1 mac? There is a gold, but not rose gold (pink) model.

      • If its not an M1 return it ASAP, the M1 is a game changer.

        • +1

Definitely the M1, but yeah you're right it says gold on the box. It is very pink though when I take it out of the box, much closer to rose-gold than straight gold.

      • +1

If you see it irl it looks more rose gold than gold.

  • Waiting for the MiniLED versions with HDR next year

    • and sexier body too lol, I just got one M1 13 Pro, looks uglier than 2019-2020 model, kinda miss butterfly keyboards too lol

      • kinda miss butterfly keyboards too lol

When they worked they were nice. That wasn't for long though!

      • Are they not the same design?

  • Also just did an office works price beat on a Macbook pro over the phone. $1965.64 for a 512GB model.

  • +2

It looks like officeworks have lowered their price to match:

  • Is there an M8 (Mate) model?

if you guys going to purchase TCN Her gift cards, please be careful, heaps of Her gift cards NOT WORKING, the HIM ones are fine

  • this or 16gb custom order or wait for the 14'inch ? :( tough choice

    • +1

The 8gb on the M1s is unified memory and acts like 16gb on an Intel. Look at some of the reviews. Most people will not notice the difference.

  • Great to see sales on a new Apple product. I wonder if ditching Intel means more profit (assume it does) so we can expect to see more sales like this.

    • I wonder if ditching Intel means more profit (assume it does)
Absolutely, but they have to pay off the (I imagine huge) research and development tab first

  • A friend paid for a base M1 MBP tonight at JB Macquarie Center, they didn’t have stock but was told they would transfer over from another store that had stock. BS or fair dinkum?

    • +1

Fair dinkum. Source: I used to work for JB Hi Fi many moons ago.

  • my macmini just shipped.

    • Did you buy from online? Did it say Feb initially?

  • +2

JB Hifi and Officeworks got stock filled up last night. I called apple online store at lunch time, got them price matched and added in trade-in my old macbook pro.
