    RENEWD - Certified Refurbished GOOD

Product is in good condition, this classification is reserved for devices that will show evidence of much heavier use that will include scuffing, heavier scratches, dents and chips on external surfaces, wear and tear will be visible on palm rest, keyboard and touchpad, screen may have minor scratches, white blemishes may be evident on the screen, hinges may have small cracks.

    how is this considered GOOD?

    • +2

Given that "good" is the lowest grade, what else would you expect?

      • +9

        Better than "SH*TE"

    • +4

See my post below. I advise against purchasing from them if described as 'good condition'.

    • Still good, i.e. it works.

    • +2

This "good" stuff reminds me of the high school pupil conduct grading system we had in Singapore. Almost the whole class got excellent, the naughty few would get very good and if you got good then you were in deep shit.

Is there something similar here in Oz or that is exclusive to authoritarian countries?

    • I grabbed a cheap one for my kid for school and it was great spec for the money decent condition but the bottom corner was missing with a sharp edge that I had to dremel down. ? They had similar discount so nothing even close in that price range.

  • +27

I got my current laptop from Renewd.

It was amazing for the price and it's still going strong, but I advise against purchasing laptops from them that are described as not being in perfect condition. Mine was 'good' condition advertised with some slight scratches and scuffs around the body but there was significantly more damage than that.

It had a dent in the back of the LCD, many scratches all over the laptop, the previous owner must have worn jewelry on both hands as the wrist wrest had a lot of tiny gouges, the LCD itself had tiny scratches/voids in it which look like dust speckles but can't be cleaned but worst of all the power pack had been chewed on by a dog. There's obvious bite marks in the cord going into the cable.

Like it still works well after a year, just be wary about the condition they advertise. I should have purchased the one for $100 more in 'excellent' condition.

    • +16

That seems about right for their classification of "Good"

They should probably change their wording though from Good to "Not so Good"

    • +5

I'm rather concerned that they are selling powerpacks with obvious cord damage. That's a potential fire hazard and shock hazard.

      • +16

        "shockingly good" condition

    • +1

power pack had been chewed on by a dog

Yeah bro, but it's all good ;D

    • the previous owner must have worn jewelry on both hands as the wrist wrest had a lot of tiny gouges

I don't suppose you can post a photo if it's not too much trouble. My laptop from Renewd has the same thing all around the keypad and I thought it was just sand or the previous user resting tools on it while they were out on the field.
Jewellery like rings or bracelets makes so much more sense.

I had to use the flash to make them show up on camera. On the photo with the right side you might be able to make out some faint scratch marks too. They are all over the laptop but very hard to take photos of. I also showed a pic of the bite marks on the power plug. Not shown are the bite marks all the way down the cord too.

Before you ask, the laptop is behind a 27" monitor which is why there's cables and mess around the laptop cooler. I run it with an undervolt on both CPU+GPU and I took off the bottom case as it gets close to thermally throttling without it and the fans are super loud. If I don't undervolt both GPU and CPU, it will thermal throttle. With undervolting it doesn't throttle but it runs hot and loud. With undervolting and taking off the bottom case it runs cools and quite.

Undervolting and removing the bottom case also allows me to run the 1070 at 1900mhz, which is better than some desktop 1070's and believe it or not - the laptop 1070 has more CUDA cores than the desktop variant, I think it might be the only laptop GPU which is actually better than the desktop one.

          "Good condition".
Major scuffs on left side, do people usually wear bracelets and rings on their left hand? because there's very few markings on the right. They go diagonally outwards away from the keypad.

For your laptop looks like your previous owner just chucked it in his schoolbag or whatever without a case. I can see the bite marks around the adapter jack but I wonder what caused the scuffs around the rim when the laptop was opened..

          • +1

@maruuO: Yours is a lot more noticeable than mine. Either your gouges are catching the light or it's a different colour underneath the black plastic top layer.

I think mine was caused by a watch on one hand and a bracelet on the other. Yours has damage above the keyboard and I have no idea what would cause that.

Maybe the original owner stuck papers that were bound with staples in the laptop after they closed it. It's like they got handouts at uni and just crammed it into the laptop before they closed the lid. But then you would have damage on the screen too, which I actually have.

            • +1

              @studentl0an: Ah, a metal watch.
Of course! That would explain how they went in deep enough to expose the metal underneath and only on the left handside
You helped me solve this year long riddle my dude xD

              • +1

@maruuO: I don't think a watch would cause damage that high up? Most the damage would be on the bottom edges like with mine?

                • @studentl0an: https://imgur.com/a/XGOt52f

True. My bottom part has fewer and shallower digs compared to yours, but the real mystery are the scuffs on the sides going diagonally outwards and the bottom left corner

                  • @maruuO: Could you take a permanent marker and colour them in? I think that may help with how noticeable they are.

                    • @studentl0an: Heh, I don't actually mind them but always wanted to know where they came from :)

  • +3

I bought one from here. Had an issue with the battery. Support was brilliant and fixed immediately.

  • Anyone can point out which is good value for under $600 or $400 (after discount)? Not Tom good at reading computer specs.

    • +1

      Maybe this for $399?

CPU: AMD Quad-Core A10-9600P (2.4 GHz, up to 3.3 GHz, 2 MB cache)
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit
      Memory: 16GB DDR4 2133 SDRAM
      Storage: 256GB SSD
      Display: 15.6" diagonal FHD anti-glare LED-backlit (1920x1080)
Graphics: Discrete AMD Radeon R8 M445 Graphics
      Optical Drive: Yes

      sure there'll be opinions.

      • +3

It's in "good" condition though, I'd stay away based on studentl0an's story.

    • +1

How about this one with a Core i5…

      https://renewd.com.au/collections/laptops/products/acer-aspi…

      CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-7200U 2.50 GHz (Maximum Turbo Speed 3.10 GHz)
      Memory: 8GB LPDDR3
      Storage: 256GB SSD Serial ATA/600
      Display: 13.3" LCD IPS Technology 16:9 Full HD 1920 x 1080 Display
      Touchscreen: Yes, Multi-touch Screen
      Graphics: Intel® HD Graphics 620
Wireless: Qualcomm Atheros NFA344A IEEE 802.11ac, Bluetooth Connectivity
      Webcam: Yes
Optical Disk Drive: No Disk Drive
      Interfaces/Ports: 1x HDMI, 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1, Audio Out, SD Card Reader
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

      • Bought this from renewd for the same price, same condition.
"Good" condition is not going to be good at all, and there's a problem with this model where using the top left USB 3.0 port will cut wifi because the antenna is here or something. Keypad shallow and makes for a below average typing experience and touchscreen a bit unresponsive.

Powerful little machine though for a great price, and Renewd customer service is tops

        • Thanks mate, what's the webcam/sound quality like? Was looking to get one for zoom

          • +1

@montorola: Serviceable webcam and has a lot of noise in lowlight, the inbuilt-mic is a bit quiet. The fan is a bit loud though which may affect the quality of your zoom convos on the other end

The best thing about this is that it is super thin and super light. If I had to choose though, I'd go for one of those HP x360s which are practically the same machines but just nicer.

            • +1

@maruuO: Thanks mate! Will look at other options also!

  • +2

I also previously got a laptop from these guys and found it and the service great.

Obviously buy in a condition you're comfortable with - they're pretty open about what means what.

Next time I need a laptop I'll use these guys again.

  • +2

Their search filters is useless: processor i7. Which generation? U series or H series? How many cores? Hiw do I find a laptop with 9th gen or 10gen 6-core i7 H series CPU?

  • Dang, might finally pull the trigger on a gaming laptop for the kids. Will update with what I bought…

    • +2

The few I looked at were 3-4 year old models at the best. For almost the same price, you can get new gaming laptop during one of the sales (with previous gen specs).

    • +4

Laptops around 1k dont seem to be bargains though (1050s), can get a better laptop from a lenovo sale.

    • This one is a cut above the rest, but they're all pretty poor value tbh:
      https://renewd.com.au/collections/laptops/products/acer-aspi…

    • Yeah the GPUs didn't end up inspiring me that much, I'll stick to the current plan of piecing a desktop together for a fraction of the cost.

  • +20

RRPs are ridiculous. The price before discount is close to the new price.

I looked at one. A very much better version (better screen, better processor) is 799 from JB HIFI. They claim their old model is RRP1299!!! They sell it for 699 without discount. That is probably more than the new value!!!! After discount is 399 which is reasonable, but not cheap. The discount is a scam. There's no discount here!!!

    • +4

Agreed, they want 2k prediscount for 8th gen systems 2 gens old worth less than 1k.

    • 2 years ago I got from Renewd an Asus GL702VS with 7700HQ, 1070 8GB, 16GB DDR4, 512GB nvme + 1TB HDD and Thunderbolt 3 for $900 (although with a fair bit of cosmetic damage).

I think today it would cost double that from them. I swear I remember seeing some of those other gaming laptops when I was looking at the one I got, for less than they are today.

  • Bought a surface book from these guys 3 years ago, it's still going strong.

The value decreases the higher up you get, and the RRP's just get more and more ridiculous, $700 is the sweet spot.

    • Not from my observations above.

      • Where else can you get a laptop with 16GB of RAM and a decent CPU for $400?

The market for new budget laptops is crap.

  • +4

At a cursory glance looks like older laptops with potential issues at close to RRP prices….hmm…not sure I'd be willing to throw in $1k+ and hope….not sure how these sell without $300 off. Though there might be the odd bargain if you know what you're doing.

  • +7

Yeah, no deal. Their cheapest laptop ACER Aspire A315-21 is $299 after discount where you can buy the latest Aspire brand new for $349 from Harvey Norman.

  • +4

Where are the bargains? Bargains have prices.

  • I bought a "Great" condition HP Envy 360X which was not bad for $330 delivered 12 mins ago. It held together fine with no issues of reliability, screen had no scratched, some small scratches on edges.
Only thing was the AMD A9 CPU which was always running 100%, but that would be my fault as I didn't do my research on that processor before buying. I keep it as a backup laptop.

  • No Thinkpads…

    • No alienware either

  • Minimum purchase $449, not $549 before discount.

  • Apart from (unfortunately) only being in 'good' condition, anyone able to comment on how this one below might stack up as a back-up laptop/touchpad for work tasks while travelling? Not interested in gaming, movie watching, etc. Anything that might 'better' it at a similar(ish) price-point?

    https://renewd.com.au/collections/laptops/products/acer-aspi…

    • +1

Can't do much better for $300

    • +2

I have this model and wrote about it a few posts up. How much do you type? The keyboard isn't for traveling because it uses weak springs and it seems to have a hard time registering key presses especially if you aren't at a desk
Otherwise it's great for travel. The screen is matte which helps with glare and it is SUPER light and thin.

      • Thanks for the feedback. Admittedly, fairly active as far as the typing goes, but more so when in accommodation and set up at a desk, rather than say while on public transport or planes. By the sound of it, the perks still seem to stack up though! Cheers again :)

  • I went with the HP Spectre X360 in "Good" condition for $1399. It is a bit steep but wanted something decent for photo editing. Probably was a bit much to spend for a roll of the dice. But hopefully they don't come up snake eyes.

    https://renewd.com.au/products/hp-spectre-x360-15-ch003tx-in…

    • +2

Did you consider a new Macbook Air with M1 chip for a similar price?

    • +1

That's new macbook air pricing, one of the best for photo editing at the moment

  • +2

    from experience with Renewd:
    - only buy Excellent or Excellent Plus condition items
    - rest is trash
    - be sure to buy extended warranty
    - they used to be awesome value, not any more for a long time now

to elaborate on awesome value, I got excellent condition laptops and tablets from them 2 years ago for around $200-300, with last generation Intel chips, too

  • I purchased a 2015 macbook from there and recommended my colleague purchase the same one (16gb ram just to keep things simple). Her laptop shat itself, so she returned it and they "fixed it" and sent it back.
Last week she asked me if my MacBook makes loud fan noises and I said, not really due to the 16GB ram, it holds up pretty well. She thought she'd check her processes and the details said she only had 8gb ram.
So… somehow they sent her a totally new laptop with only 8gb of ram and my colleague didn't know about this for months.
She has now sent it back for a refund and just ended up buying a new laptop elsewhere. Felt really bad as I recommended them to her.

  • How is this HP x360 for high school student ?
    https://renewd.com.au/collections/laptops/products/hp-pavili…

Anything else you would recommend with at least an i5 ?

  • +1

After reading the horror stories on here, this has to be the biggest joke of a bargain ever.

    • this has to be the biggest joke of a bargain ever.

That's nothing compared to eBay Plus hourly deals, 15% off JB Hi-Fi gift cards and free stuff from Step One.

Those are contenders for the biggest joke.

  • +3

Theyre selling a 2 year old base spec macbook air for $1400 and claiming the RRP was $2150. $550 more than the actual RRP. Surely there's some kind of consumer laws against this. I wouldnt want to support this company for the sheer dishonesty. Its pretty much a scam

    • I didn't know, cheers for the info

  • We just got our Acer Spin 5 today (i5 8th gen, 8gb, 256 ssd, FHD touchscreen convertible). not nearly as bad as I was expecting, just a couple of dents in the corners (metal chassis, so no chips); screen in great condition. Still feeling like a good grab for $299. :)

    • Oh wow, good buy then, thankfully you didn't get a bad unit…

    • Was yours deemed as 'Good Condition' on the site or Great?

      • +1

This was the infamous "good condition"
