Ten bucks more than what I paid from amazon, but this has local power adapter & Warranty

  • can it play rmvb?

From the WD website "RMVB videos from Real Media are not supported. You will need to use conversion software to convert them to a supported format."

    • Can I just ask - without trying to troll - but where do you have real media video from? Last time I had video in this format was about 10 years ago when small videos were downloaded from the net (prior to you tube getting huge) or emailed (we all saw the monkey sniffing its finger right?).
These days it's mpg, avi, swf(video) or maybe mkv or wmv.

Is their a source you get video from in this format? IF not and its just a few older video wouldn't you just re-encode them and move on? I just keep seeing people ask if media players play this format, and it has me confused.

AFAIK, rmvb format is still popular in some Asia countries
Source wise, I don't have a clue. Perhaps torrent?

      • yup i download 90% of my tv series in rmvb format, it saves a lot of download data than avi or mkv formats without sacrifice much quality.

        • my roommate has a thing for korean soap operas and a lot of it is rmvb but it trancodes on my HTPC to her PS3

  • I had this player for a week, but took it back. It kept failing trying build it's media library, scanning files over the network from a 2TB shared drive. It would try and do it for some time, then jam the whole player. After a restart it would claim that the share is read-only which wasn't the case) or that the access credentials were wrong . Also, it seemed to have trouble adjusting it's output refresh rate based on the videos frame rate. The auto setting is there, but it didn't work very reliably. I really wanted to like it as I understood it is one of the best media players out there, but was disappointed.

    • so, would you recommend to others?

      • The interface and remote were nice and playback quality too once on the right refresh rate. So, if you don't care about the media library function, or possibly use just an external hard drive instead of a network share it should be good. The frame rate issue might be just because of certain files (but Aldi Medion HD media player does change it's output rate correctly with the same files). If you can live with those two things, then yes. And I don't really know of any better player.

  • I like the built-in Wifi and online support from this unit, currently I have an Astone player with USB Wifi dongle, but the wireless connection is sometimes not stable and it is looking ugly with the USB Wifi dongle plug in.

Free delivery from DSE when paying by Paypal .

  • This is not WDTV, but something that can turn my laptop into a media player ..any experience with this product?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Q-Waves-Wireless-USB-HDMI-Extender/d…

    • Looks interesting, but it does not seem to have any sort of remote control. Just says "control everything from your laptop", which kinda makes it pointless for it to be wireless, if you need to have the laptop near yourself anyway.

      • I guess windows media remote can be used for navigating through the file or bluetooth/wireless keyboard and mouse.

The big advantage i see using this is full internet experience on TV which none of the media player offers at this stage. So essentially you can buy an old Duo core 2 laptop and use it as a media player with full laptop functionality on your TV. The laptop can be hidden in your tv cabinet with only the remote control/keyboard sensor sticking out.

        To me it's quite neat.

  • Should I get this or Boxee Box?

    • +1

I have been thinking about that too. But I have tried the Boxee software on my laptop and I am not completely convinced about it either. You can get the Box from eBay for less than $200 though and the remote's supposedly quite good.

      • Boxee community is quit large and the is a fair bit of stuff you can ad to the box, interface is really nice. But does take a deeper level of understanding to get the most out of it, like collecting and managing your own meta data. The wd is just plug and play it handles everything for you. Interface is nice much like XBMC in easy of use. Firmware as it stands still has some minor issues but I am confident WD will iron most of these out. I am using this as a secondary media player for upstairs I have a HTPC downstairs running Windows Media center 7 and XBMC. if I was to buy one as my primary box my preference would be a Xtreamer Ultra then a Boxee then this.
        http://xtreamer.net/downloads/xtreamer-ultra.aspx

      • does the WD actually show meta data for the video .. or just a list of the file names. I'm swinging to Boxee as I thought it dynamically found your movie info and showed cover images etc. - WD doesn't do this does it?

        • +1

          WD does this automatically.

I actually did it the first time on my comp using this - http://wdtvhubgen.codeplex.com/ - it was a bit quicker than waiting for it to scan through the box. Once I had all the data I wanted I let it do all the new stuff itself.

        • you can add moviesheets (MOD) if you want to make the most of your meta data.
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVZ23bfUnfY

        • I have to reply to myself here (couldn't reply to the child posts of this post?)

When I looked into this new model earlier I saw many comments about how the firmware was based on the 1TB Live Hub player (same interface) and how the mods for the previous versions probably won't work. And not much hope for this version as the 1TB player hadn't been moded yet [differing chipsets]

So has anyone got modded firmware for this? the movie sheets ref'd by sonicentrophy look exactly what I want - but if this isn't available as a default then I might as well keep using my TV to scroll through a file list.

        • The moviesheets don't have exactly the same layout but look very similar, plot length seems a bit longer in that video but could just be the source used.

No custom firmware yet and it may not happen on these ones due to software reasons (haven't researched too much so you will prob have to google it)

  • peterlong1952 - Staff discount days can we loop into that as well somehow? I would love to get further 10% as well!

    • Sorry, only available to Woolworth employees.

  • I have two of these units, unlike Jakentta I have only postivie feedback from them, I have seen some people say they have difficulties however if you update the firmware I have had no issues.
My kids have one in the room for there shows and one in the lounge room for the family.
It plays all the video formats I require and is a great music player….the price is okay but you can do better at JB-HIFI haggle….we got out for $98

These are pretty amazing, can highly recommend after using my PS3 as a media server for a couple of years this does everything an better.

A friend of mine picked one up from Officeworks in East Vic Park WA for $100.70 but this may just have been pure luck (as the guy price matched Amazon) here is the receipt if anybody is game - http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/6590/externalimagesmedia2…

    • After a little deliberation I went to the OW @ East Vic Park and tried for the same price - they wouldn't have it. But they did price match the DSE price -5% (which had gone inactive during my time in the store) which is what I really went in expecting to get.

On another note … the staff member I first spoke to (I simply asked what the price was since it isn't even marked on the shelf) said 'I could get a good deal on those - had I done my research?' I said I had and he said he had to go check what price he could go to (I hadn't even discussed a price match) he wandered off then came back with another staff member to the next isle talking about stock and price matching then disappeared 5 min later he gave me a wave as he left the store via the front door and I am just standing their.

  • not a bad price….OfficeWorks is selling $149 i think….

  • Just price matched 2 from Officeworks =)

  • Just bought one - Not sure how much we will use it but I hope it is easy to set up as I want to watch the Queen documentaries from IView on HDTV

    • Don't think it does iView … does it?

  • Hey guys … my roommate just got back from uni and ordered one from DSE - I got one today from OW as a price match we only really need to one (guess we have been looking around at this for a while and both jumped).

How can we cancel the DSE order? I can log in and see the order, and in the main menu it shows Cancel Orders. But clicking on it show the order as 'processing' and no option to cancel. The support line is closed now, and I guess I'm thinking by the time I get up tomorrow it could be shipping (WA vs Eastern Standard Time). Do you guys know if it can be cancel, how long it takes to ship or if it does ship can it be returned for a refund at the local store?

    • Ok Canceled by phone today which was easy enough. They even have the option of refusing delivery and it goes back to them and the order would have been canceled and refunded.

  • +1

Seems like OW has now lower their price to match DS one. http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…
Must be too many people price match at OW yesterday.
