$61.60 with Amazon Business 30% off. Maybe it's time to take the plunge.

    • is 30% only for one item in cart or entire 1st transaction cart items?

      • Cart

      • +2

You get 30% off all items in your cart. If you don't use the full $100 discount, this will also carry over to future transactions.

        • this will also carry over to future transactions.

          Really? I didn't know that.

        • Some user reports this may have been closed, hope it is not true otherwise better order all at once.

          • @lufee: Can confirm this carries over

            • @mclovin05: When did you place your order with the carry over working? T&Cs indicates it's a single order.

              • +1

@bargainshooter: I placed an order for a keyboard case 3 days ago and received it. When i add the streamer 4K to my cart i can see the 30% off in my cart now as well

          • +1

@lufee: I just tried for you guys

I bought the Philips 7000 kettle, and it gave like $20 off

I added some other items (NVIDIA shield $292) and it's showing as extra $80 off in cart (down to $219)

So the previous commentor is right, it's not just on one order

  • This or Chromecast with Google TV?

This. Newer, (Harder,) Better, Faster, (Stronger)

      • +2

worth the upgrade from Chromecase with Google TV?

        • +1

Processor on this is only about 20% faster compared to 4k chromecast.

        • bought a hub to expand storage of my Chromecast. Easy

          • @Vomo: Which did you get mate? Was hoping to find something for the previous Google TV model

        • Sure is. Did this 3 weeks ago. Worlds apart.

  • This or wait for Fire TV Max/Cube sale during Prime Day?

    • +2

I have both, if you are in the Google Home ecosystem definitely this. All the Alexa products keep advertising to me over time and it can get annoying.

      • honestly yeah, i like fire stuck remote but the built in AUDIO ON ads when i turn it on are annoying

    • +2

I have a Fire tv dongle and the Amazon crap annoyed me so much that I converted it to google via LineageOS

      • +1

wait you can do this? I'm so sick of my fire tv nothing works on it I hate all this weird proprietary Amazon crap limiting it. And every time you say anything bad on a fire thread they defend it so hard like get real, we just want normal unbloated unmodded android tv android. ffs worse decision ever with the firetv

I even hate the remote like why did they make it curved on the bottom? it's as if everything from Amazon is from some different planet and just weird and hard to use. idk what they're thinking but the design team really need to have a good hard look at themselves.

      • Also want to know more about how to do this?

      • Can you get Kayo 4k

    • +1

Prefer the Fire TV Cube as it supports the H. 265 codec if using Plex.

If you are using just the streaming services, Google is better and cleaner.

      • the fire tv and fire tv 4k I have both support h265 native decoding under jellyfin (ie: no transcoding at all).

  • +1

Can I cast audio to this device with connected speakers?

    • -1

@GeneralKeen I think you would need a dongle to split an audio signal or from the HDMI. In theory it would work, in practice I'm not sure. I don't own one.

But I believe people used this approach for the older CCwGTV models. Best solution is to find the old old Chromecast Audios on marketplace/gumtree. They're still the best solution for audio only.

      • Last one sold on ebay went for $120 + $10 postage… something that used to sell for under $50

        • Wow! I have four of them. Bought one new on sale and the others used for between $20-40. Some years ago now, but yeah, wow.

    • +1

I think yes you can. Use the Google Home app to add this device or the connected speakers to a "room" in the app. You can also group speakers so that it plays all around your house if they're all in Google Home app. I've got two Google speakers and a Bose soundbar (on TV with previous generation Chromecast With Google TV) in the Home app as a group called "Downstairs". They play in sync, and I can extend it to a "Whole House" group that includes upstairs.

  • +15

Grabbed one of these today from the other post to replace my CCwGTV4K as the remote has taken a beating over time and I was already looking for a replacement, runs slightly faster and Plex does respond a bit better but as others mentioned in the linked post it isn't really a huge upgrade if you already have a Chromecast 4k.

Had a few teething issues, took me almost an hour to get the sound working - a quick google and some reconfiguring of the sound options on my TV and the Streaming device sorted it out but beware of that if you have a soundbar attached. Also since installing it my PS5 is now randomly turning off/changing input while playing, haven't had a chance to look into it yet but never once had that issue in the last 4 years so I'm gonna say it's related. Will see how it goes over the next few days but IMO I wouldn't rush out to get one unless you have a specific need, just my two cents.

    • +1

Can you speak to how streaming larger files, say bluray's 50gb+ go on this? Notice any stuttering issues so far?

      • -2

that will be entirely dependant on your network / wifi, not the streaming device.

        • No it wont, GPU processing has to do heavy lifting on Blueray.
I have a Chromecast 4k and it struggles to even handle 2160P files at 10gb size i need to run my bluerays via a media player which has a older GTX to handle it.

  • Will wait for gen 2

    • +9

Took google a good 4 years to refresh it with a 20% gain. Wait another 3 years for 20% more?

      • -1

Nope, they will reduce price if gen 1 and then buy it

  • +2

Will this handle larger file Bluray remuxes / Dolby Vision content on something like Stremio or Kodi?

Bought a new LG G5, and I'm having "memory" issues when trying to run larger files on Stremio.

    • +1

I'm not 100% sure but I've heard that the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) can play larger files.

      Here is a comparison chart:

      https://imgur.com/a/comparison-chart-about-new-generation-of…

      • I have the Xiaomi Box S 2nd gen was great until Kayo stopped working on it

Does anyone know if the 3rd gen does?

Otherwise I think the Chromecast with gtv & steamer only support external storage in fat which doesn't allow file sizes over 4gb….

        • +1

It looks like it can handle just about anything according to this whirlpool thread below:

          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/30x1yx48

        • Confirm Kayo works on the Gen 3 MiBox. I've only got it connected to a non 4k TV in bedroom ATM so haven't checked if 4k Kayo content works yet though. Can double check this later today if needed.

    • +1

I got a fire tv cube for this. I think my issue was Wi-Fi speed though, neither my G1 or Chromecast had Wi-Fi 6 and was getting frequent buffers. Now, no buffering except at the start, even with 80GB files.

      • I have good internet and wifi. Cube still buffers at the start, but then smooths as you mentioned. Also somsometimeses, doesn't let you skip of forward and got into buffer.

    • +1

No it doesnt. I returned it during launch due to this very reason.

I have been using the fire cube for almost a year now and it has been amazing, supports all codecs.

    • I had similar issues trying to play very high bit-rate files (my Internet connection is above 100mbps).
I gave up on chromecast and bought a Zidoo Z9X 8k.

Very expensive solution but handles any bit-rate, codec, dolby vision etc. As a bonus, does local library handling really well too.

      • I use an Intel n100 mini PC ($180 when I bought it), handles AV1, HEVC/h265, VP1 and everything else below it. Kodi app does audio passthrough to my AVR. Kodi syncs with my jellyfin server.

        • I'm assuming Atmos pass through works fine.
Sometime back I remember there were issues with passing Dolby vision with Linux.
Do all the HDR formats work fine now?

              • +2

      • Sorry Mr N paid 83.60 at officeworks

    • $74 if you price match at JB, use $10 Perks voucher and 5% off gift cards.

      • Yeh got it for $70.20 using perks and 10% off gift card.

What to do with the other 4-5 Google Chromecasts and Fire Sticks I have. Are they having good reselling values?

    • +2

How'd you end up with so many?

      • +2

Lots of decent deals Amazon and Google threw back then

    • +1

Buy a cheap portable monitor next time you see a deal. Slap on the chromecast and you can have Google photos as a screen saver. El cheapo digital frame

  • Need em below $69!

    • I got it for $43.20 through a price match and paid using $40 TGG StoreCash and Ultimate gift card.

      • It cost you $43.20 after using the StoreCash or $43.20 all up?

        • $43.20 after using the StoreCash .

    • +1

      Nice!

  • Techie air-head here - we have a Google nest device - will this Google streamer:

    a) work with our Sonos speakers that we play currently music via iphone or iPad?; and
    b) play Britbox (can't see it mentioned on the list of APPs)

    I'd love to simplify things

    many thanks

    • +3

Sonos really dont not play well with anything that is not apple airplay… as sonos and google have a lawsuit aginst each other. Unless you are just using a sonos soundbar, that is connected to your TV via HDMI cable…. in that case the sonos uses something called ARC… which means everything will work google streamer wise. You just wont beable to use googles "cast" button.

You also cant cast cast from a google next to a sonos. Unless that sonos is a soundbar connected to a tv via the hdmi cable to your tv/google tv streamer

      Brit box shoild work….

      • thanks so much!

  • +2

Would this be better than an Nvidia shield or is it still pretty much the best android TV device?

    • Not as good as the Shield but still good at the price.

    • Shield still the king.

This is just a smudge better than the old chromecast

    • -1

Shield can't do Kayo 4K if that matters to you.

      • Good to know though don’t use Kayo, too bad they don’t support it at 4K.

      • What do you mean? The Shield does Kayo 4k.

      • +1

Not sure which shield you've got but my 2019 Pro does Kayo 4k fine

    • I personally found Zidoo Z9X 8k to be better than Shield for my usage (more modern hardware too) . But it is more expensive and comes with alot of caviats.

    • -1

No chance. The Shield is a far better streaming device.

  • Does this do 4k with kayo? Their website is incredibly unhelpful.

    • Yes. Picked one up yesterday and streamed Kayo 4k last night.

    • Yes but…

Kayo i.e fox does not have rights to 4k NRL when the game is on FTA TV.

You must select the event itself otherwise the channel is only HD.

You need to select up to 4k in the settings area of the app as well.

  • Can you get Stremio on this?

  • The built in gigabit ethernet port is the big upgrade for me. I can stream my games now over steam link.

    • You could get Ethernet on the old chromecast too with the $20 charger, big issue is the chipset. Mediatek is notoriously slow at decoding moonlight/steamlink so don't expect sub 10ms decoding on this every when wired.

  • My NVIDIA Shield TV Pro is showing signs of age - still mostly works, but I get flashing static screens every now and then. Wondering if I should take the plunge.

    • Why not if is more than half the price.

      • +3

probably a downgrade if used to the performance of NVIDIA Shield TV Pro

    • +1

Shield TV is still the best and strongest one out there especially if you are using a home media centre or something. Plex/Kodi

    • get an intel n100 or n150 mini pc. Much faster, runs windows or linux and whatever media apps you want. Can decode surround or pass through to AVR. 4K 60Hz works fine streamed from my NAS.

  • there is a black version (they call it hazel) but only available on US google store, annoying

  • If I mount this behind the TV (line of sight blocked from the remote) will it still work?
