First post guys, fantastic engine oil, much better than the current Repco deal. Basically liquid life for my '16 Camry. Let alone this is an Advanced Full Synthetic Oil so is an absolute bargain.

    There have been better deals in this viscosity "you know what I mean"

    • The titanium is mostly marketing especially where they quote "Transforms to be strongest when the pressure is highest, protecting your engine"

      However the oil itself is good quality and is made of Group IV base PAO's which is the reason it can carry the following specifications and can be considered a true "full synthetic" engine oil.

      I have used its slightly thicker variant Castrol EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4 on my Ford Focus RS and it is a very good oil, done 2 track days and no oil consumption reported after hard-use even seeing temperatures of 130* for brief periods.

      The 0W-40 carries the following specifications

      ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4
      API SN / CF
      MB-Approval 229.3 / 229.5
      Porsche A40
      VW 502 00 / 505 00
      

      Which also shows that it is perfectly accepted by the manufacturer to be put in most porsche vehicles and premium VW's (Golf R's).

      I would strongly recommend anyone to stick with their manufacturer approved oil's especially if you are in warranty , if your car is no longer in warranty i would still stick with the correct oil weight , if your car is burning oil or has a small oil leak it is perfectly acceptable to go up 1 grade of oil in thickness. (i.e 5w-30 to 5w-40)

        This oil is not group IV, only the 0w-40 variant is, that is why it is the most expensive and is never on sale for anywhere close to this price.

        Still a good oil though and a bargain for $36

          in regards to your reply i should have been more specific with my wording , the EDGE 5w-30 A3/B4 is not a Group IV oil itself, however as it is a GRP 3 Hydrocracked oil that is "blended in" with GRP 4 PAO's to make it a more "true" full synthetic. one could look at the oil and argue it is a more Group IV oriented oil compared to a standard Group 3.

          • @[Deactivated]: I believe apart from the 0w-40 Castrol Edge, the only other true group IV oils on the Aus market are Penrite 10/10ths and Royal Purple.

  • Manual for 2014 Nissan X-trail 2.5L QR25DE says 5W-30 is preferable.
    Supercheap's garage says "This Part Doesn't Fit Your Vehicle".
    Is it compatible? How do I figure this out?

        Looks like it is a no based on this website as well. The Owner's manual says 5W-30 is preferred, which is this deal.
        This just doesn't make sense too me.
        As you've guessed by new, I am not very good with car knowledge. I am trying to learn about my car, did last oil change and air filters by myself.

        • Your Nissan may require a 'SM' or 'SN' grade oil. This oil is a 'SL' grade, an older standard that may not be compatible with the emissions system on your car, specifically the catalytic converter.

            @fifoo: If you're going to use this in a VAG car, don't go by the 12m/15k intervals in your books. 6/10 would be better.

          Your sister won't be grateful when her engine starts having expensive problems.

      • Do NOT use this oil in you VW!
        You need VW 504/507 specification.
        Even though the LL is $80 when not on special, you are better off getting this than potentially causing engine damage, which would be much more costly.
        You can also use Nulon Euro.
        Both are usually on sale a few times a year for around $50. I'm guessing it will be on sale New Years and/or Australia Day.

          Er.. not sure about this lol.

          I drive a MY15 Jetta 118TSI and use this oil.

          The manual says the engine is compatible with non-LL 5w30, VW502/505 spec, in addition to 504/507 spec.

          P.S. this oil is good for 25K/1Y for non-turbo BMWs. For the e46 318i I had before, car was on 25K/1Y schedule with no engine issue.

          • @YRT: I was just having a read on a VW forum and it looks like 502/505 is okay for petrol VWs as we don't have low sulphur fuel, but it is suggested to be changed every 10,000kms. So, probably better to use LL for longevity.

            The 504/507 spec is required for diesels.

      • LL stands for Long-Life , it is oils predominately mostly used to last up to 20,000km's and more.

        LL oil's tend to be of higher quality then standard oil's hence the cost difference.

      If in doubt always follow the car's manual. 5W30 is pretty much the standard for modern engines in typical Australian circumstances.

      I have a cert 2 in vehicle mechanics and have been trained to do basic and advanced servicing. You should ALWAYS go by the vehicle manual and ignore Supercheap's bs about what is compatible with you vehicle. I went there a few weeks ago and trusted that there website was correct and bought the battery recommended on their website and it wasn't the correct size and wouldn't fit my stock battery tray. It was a huge waste of time. They told me that they often have this problem and their website is not 100% right for compatible parts. I would not trust them so go by your manual!

      • But I don't need to, I have on my roof currently 12x 275w + 20x 330w solar panels :) so with over 9kw of sun I can charge the car for free during the day :)

    Surprisingly, both Castrol's and SuperCheap's oil selector has this oil as suitable for both my 2.5L diesel Triton and my 1.6L petrol i30. Thanks OP.

    • Yeah same here. Its good in my nissan 2.5L diesel navara and .7L smartcar. But the navara gets diesel oil and the smart gets this.

      you can put diesel oil in a car and standard engine oil in a diesel , but its NOT RECOMMENDED.

      the chemical makeup of each type of oil is designed fit for purpose , for example if i put a standard engine oil in a diesel it will clog up the DPF (diesel particulate filter) , if i put diesel oil in a petrol engine it will destroy the catalytic converter in most cars.

      oil's aint oil's but in an emergency it is safe to use either/or , but as soon as you can drop the oil and fill it out with what your manufacturer recommends.

      around 750ml oil consumption per 1000km is normal, especially for older higher km engines

        I would not call this normal 🤪. Most people do about 10,000km+ a year so with you're assumption, a standard 4-5litre oil pan would be empty after a couple months of driving. This is not normal and you likely have a leak or the motor is so far gone it needs replacing. My car is 16 years old with a 5 litre pan and I haven't changed my oil in 6months and guess what, the dipstick still shows full 😂

    • Won't make a difference as the running temp viscosity is the same, will burn at the same rate. You're looking for a 5W-40 or 10W-40.

  • Its probably getting very technical but I wonder why this version is still using such an old API classification of SL which is from back in 2004. 9 out of 10 synthetic oils are on the latest SN rating. Even the other versions of Edge are on SN.

    Ive only learnt about this stuff in the last few months but its quite important to some, especially if you have a modern or turbo car because it offers different levels of protection and fuel economy.

      Don’t be fooled into thinking SN is necessarily better than SL. Unless your vehicle specifically requires it, I would take a good SL oil over SN any day.

      Basically the SN spec limits the quantity of some additives which help protect the engine, to help with emissions and catalytic converter life. So the SL spec for this oil I can basically assure you contains high levels of ‘good stuff’ over an equivalent SN oil

      In particular the SM & SN specs require lower amounts of ZDDP, a potent antiwear additive that is unfortunately poisonous to catalytic converters, especially newer designs. So this oil will probably be better for your engine if your emissions system can take it. Check your owners manual for the spec they allow.

  • Been using Valvoline MST since the first oil change in 2007.

    Vehicle will be 14 years old this February Has 338,000k on the clock and no oil use.

    Oil and filter changed every 7,500k.
