JB Hi-Fi Unlimited Music Streaming 1 Month Free

1391

They're offering a month free of unlimited music streaming if you sign up during the beta period, no CC needed.

All that's needed is a mobile phone number - you're not required to enter in your credit card unless you want to subscribe after the free trial period, unlike many similar services.

Seems to be a pretty good deal for the month.

    +1 no CC required

  • So stream means have to be online to play it, right? How to play it on home HiFi?

    Cannot download to local storage?

    • That's correct, you must be online to play it. There's iPhone and Android apps coming soon.

    • +2

When I click "Play" it downloads the music to my HDD instead of streaming it. Better that way =D

      • +2

        Huh? Please explain this!

        • +10

Do you have Internet Download Manager?
If you do then Intergrate the download manager with your browser.

      • Cheers for the reply. What's the bitrate on the downloaded version?

        • +1

          Too bad it's only 128. I want 320.
          File size is around 2-4mb

        • +1

          Most are 256kbps.
          Only a couple albums/songs have been 128k.

  • +2

Dare say this venture will not last long.

    • Well considering local radio stations and triple J are playing absolute rubbish, it might take off. I wouldnt mind being exposed to more varieties of music. Unless of course they follow suit and play the same rubbish everyone else does.

      • ok i've totally misinterpreted this service. nevermind me. great idea.. anyone know the pricing after the free trial?

        • +1

Currently $25 for 3 months, $50 for 6 months or $80 for 12 months. It's pretty cheap when you think about it, especially if you're going to be able to pick it up on your mobile.

          You can't currently subscribe however.

  • +13

Seems reasonable to me - $80/year = ~$6.70/month. I'm glad we're finally getting more of these kinds of services in AUS, hopefully their catalog grows

    • +2

I hope people get behind this, this is a good deal. People need to support artists, at this price, people have no real excuse to pirate music.

  • +1

Sign up to Google music and throw your mp3s on it, 20,000 song limit.

    • +1

Not really available through legit means to Aus.

  • May just give it a go, cheers for that. Can't see myself subscribing but can't hurt to try it.
btw is this the same doggunn from WP?

    • You know it! :)

  • Lol you cant click on the featured music advertised on the left.

    • Just press Play button underneath

      • not on my screen.

        • I think the issue is that images are too big for your screen size - that's why you can see buttons: info - play - add

  • Hmm.. Do we get to stream all the music JB Hifi sells?
Or is it some select amount.

    I'll sign up anyway.

    • So far I have not come across anything missing.

      • I tried to search Wiz Khalifa - No Sleep.
        No results found

        • +1

Search (and pretty much everything else) has stopped working in the past 10 minutes or so. I'm guessing due to the volume of people using it at the moment.

        • I'm sure it's there, I just searched it and it came up. As hambuger said, search is playing up a bit.

          https://now.jbhifi.com.au/#/music/Artist/145022 Find it in there.

  • +1

So it's basically Grooveshark that you will have to pay for. Pass.

    • +1

Grooveshark is being shut down. They're being sued for an amount that they can't pay, and the lawsuit is almost a certain success.

      • Damn… Lucky Guvera.com also allows legal streaming and downloading, though their range is a lot less than Grooveshark…

  • +6

For the amount of money Australians have to pay for banwidth, we should at the very least get to keep the content we download.

  • Almost no Ministry of Sound :\

  • +1

Can't see this kind of service taking off here unless they really can get ALL labels on board, AND we get decent mobile data coverage.

    JUst download and use Pandora

    • +1

      top stream? please explain?

      www.pandora.com
"We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative."

      • -1

Just download it fro the US iTunes store.

        • +1

You will need a VPN to access Pandora after you've downloaded the app.

  • +14

I prefer their give away of $200 vouchers…

    • Hahaha good one ;)

  • shrug just use youtube + mediaconverter instead

    • +1

Why not just use torrents and P2P?

Some people prefer to get their music legally.

      • -6

How is it illegal? You're simply stripping the music from a public video and making it an mp3. If any law enforcement authorities tell me it's illegal, I'll stop immediately.

        • +3

You have a licence to stream, not a licence to record. As Funkdafied points out, recording that stream is illegal. Just go torrent your music if you have to steal it - it's at least being honest with yourself.

        • From the YouTube terms of service:

You shall not download any Content unless you see a “download” or similar link displayed by YouTube on the Service for that Content.

          And:

You agree not to circumvent, disable or otherwise interfere with security-related features of the Service or features that prevent or restrict use or copying of any Content or enforce limitations on use of the Service or the Content therein.

Not 'illegal', but it's pretty clear you aren't meant to.

      • I use to tape Triple J J file.

        illegal right?

  • Thx CHAMP !

  • Nice, good looking interface and pretty good range, thanks.

  • Cool thanks. This + the Samsung one have been pretty handy when I've wanted to listen to a specific song that I didn't have. Anyone else dislike the website though? It doesn't display well on a 1366x768 display. I don't see why they didn't design it so there was no excessive scrolling needed, or no scrolling at all - just a simple layout would have been nice.

Edit: And what the hell is with that huge obnoxious "now playing" bar - why does it need to be so big?! And, try to search for an artist or a song, the layout stuffs up even more. Especially when you click on an artist and try to find which of their songs are available for streaming. It's a complete mess. Buuuut - I like the website. I'm listening to The Roots' new album (which is really good imo), glad they didn't put the clean version up there.

I suppose I'll send all my comments/feedback to them. Anyone else agree though? I mean on a mobile device it will function better but on a computer it just looks disgusting

Edit 2: God damn it. Just when I wanted to listen to some celine dion…

Edit 3: Actually, turns out most of the music on here is clean/edited for radio. Guess I shouldn't be complaining since it's free but when a track is clearly titled "f—- you" with no asterisks or anything, why bother with the clean version?

    • There's normally two albums, although they're not clearly marked - one being explicit the other not.

  • +1

Wondering why if they have my email address do they need my mobile number ? I'm pretty protective of my mobile number as I hate pest calls trying to sell me shit

    • It's a simple check that you live in Australia (probably). I wouldn't worry.

      • +1

to stop you using disposable email addresses to sign up unlimited accounts.

Now you have to go around getting FREE Leabara SIM Cards to hae multiple phone numbers to sign up with :p

    • Since you're not giving your credit card details (since it's a free trial), they need another way to confirm you're Australian.

    • i wouldn't mind giving my mobile number rather than home, as mobile is way too expensive for cold telemarketing and CID helps to filter the calls

  • Worked for me once I told FlashBlock to allow all flash on the site :P

Sweet freebie! Might even sign up to this later, looks pretty sick. Like last.fm (used to be), but not free, but with a decent catalogue. Get what you pay for I guess.

  • This is great, thanks for sharing.
I'd like the search to be improved a bit and add something similar to what apple does with genious.

    • It kinda does have something like genius doesn't it? When you add something to your queue it pops up with stuff on the right that you may also like. So far for me it's been pretty spot on as a lot of what pops up I already own.

How do I integrate this with Firefox ?? nudge nudge.

    • Do a search for a plugin called downloadhelper.

  • +1

Meh, Youtube does the trick usually

    • this uses less bandwidth..

    • +1

      Youtube has lame ads.

  • Fail. The long artist names obliterate the track names. :-( Hope they fix this up before final release.

  • Would be interested to see how many "Millions" are as its almost half price compared to Zune currently…

  • if they have flac format this will be top deal!

  • Similar service to bandit.fm?

  • +1

ive been waiting for something like this for ages!

  • Anyone having trouble using the service? After typing my username/password and hitting the 'login' button it just sits there for about 30 seconds after which it displays a 404.

  • Nice and quick. It is AU based. As soon as I click on a song, it starts to play and pretty much download the whole song in < 1 minute… Streaming working well…

Would be nice to have multiple playlists. Would be interesting to see how well the phone apps work.

  • +1

No mobile app or way to play on mobile?

  • The website is just awesome. And no Flash too.

    • mine keeps saying i dont have adobe flash installed (even though I do) and the songs won't play.
      running firefox, any ideas?

      • Not sure whats wrong there but, runs smoothly in chrome.

  • Seems to work fairly well, however keep an eye on the data usage, it chews through it fairly quickly.

  • what's the difference between this and youtube anyway? i can stream music iin youtube for free.

    • +1

Youtube streams are flash whereas this service is Mp3. The sound quality on Youtube videos isn't always the best.

      • And YouTube has ads.

  • +ve - nice offer! Not playable on iOS though = fail.

    • I believe you mean iOS = fail xD

      • :) I wonder if this site is even usable on Android?

        • +2

Works fine on an Android Acer Tab.

  • +3

I don't see what the attraction is to streaming subscription based services. I prefer to own the music I listen to. (well, at least to have "acquired" it). I have no idea why, but it makes it more enjoyable to listen to.

    • I'm the same but I consider myself a "collector". But each to their own!

  • -2

WOW. They have a terribly incomplete music library.

    • You sure it wasn't just search just playing up? They have a huge library. Yet to find anything that isn't in it, except for some really underground stuff.

  • +3

Yes they do. No Beatles - me no lookee any further!

    • +4

pretty sure iTunes is the only online/digital store that is allowed to have Beatles

      • Yes I am sure you are right - nonetheless I just find it a good 'acid test' when I'm in a hurry to see if the library is any good. (I've got pretty much all of the Beatles songs anyway and umpteen variations thereof - although I should update some with the remastered versions.)

  • you can stream music for free using http://grooveshark.com/

    • I love it when people read the preceding comments

      DogGunn on 13/12/2011 - 13:32

    • love grooveshark!

  • isnt this what youtube is for? … the ads are getting to me tho, so annoying! … be better if it was unlimited downloads for a month, you can listen to music streamed on lots of sites for free!

  • yay who doesnt love free music. :D

  • ok, so I know its still in beta stage but my now account has started only playing snippets/previews of songs and not the whole thing. I wonder if they've run into some legal stuff and can't provide whole songs. Is anyone else having problems?

    • No
