Given how long ago this card was probably ordered, this is a reasonable price, and is basically US MSRP. Nice work!

  • You can see an unboxing of this video card here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNOaLc70tls&ab_channel=GoodG…

Seems like a good deal. I remember on launch these were selling for about 3000

    • +53

$2,700 for a GPU is a good deal. What a world we live in.

      • +1

it's a good price compared to what it normally goes for, but what it normally goes for is not a good price. If that makes any sense.

Still, I'm surprised that it isn't OOS already. This card is a miner's wet dream, and it's selling at below market value.

I'm considering it myself but really hope someone else buys them all and takes the dilemma away from me.

        • +20

There is no ozbargain here, only ozspender.

I suspect you're also fine with the new 3K price tags for phones.

          No deal!

          • @eddyah: This card is essentially the replacement for the prev gen Titan, it was quite a bit more expensive. It's a good deal if you need 24GB or VRAM. No point to buy for games (well, maybe except of playing on Kaggle where it can pay for itself).

            • +1

@DmytroP: Previous titans (before 20 series) were a significant leap up over the 80Ti. This is not.

              • +1

@lostn: I think even with 10 series, 1080ti was quite similar performance wise to Titan X, with only 1GB of VRAM difference. With 20 or 30 series, it depends a lot if 11GB of VRAM is enough for you or not (even worse with the current 3080, only 10GB). On my tasks (deep learning) the difference between pairs of 2080Ti/Titan and 3080/3090 is actually quite similar, around 5-20%. Nice plot at https://timdettmers.com/2020/09/07/which-gpu-for-deep-learni… (Figure 8).

I don't think NVidia will release Titans with 30 series, not much space left performance wise between 3090 and RTX A6000 for 3x the price at the same performance but 48GB of slightly slower VRAM. IMHO 3090 worth buying only as RTX Titan replacement if you need more VRAM than 3080 provides.

                • @DmytroP:

Well they'd have to make a 3090Ti to replace the 3090 because the 3080Ti will close the gap even further between the 3080 and 3090….

                  • @Zachary: Depending on the price, the 3080Ti with 20GB of VRAM would certainly make 3090 much less attractive. But it would also be hard to significantly improve 3090 to create 3090ti card.

                    • @DmytroP: so then 3090 will remain top end gaming performance until the 4000 series roll out of 7000s of the amd's if they manage to get something to beat the 3090……wait didnt the 6900xt came toe to toe with the 3090 in someone's review? Or was that fluff….? Or maybe I was dreaming….

                      • @Zachary: Not really following the state of AMD cards as for my tasks (deep learning, not gaming much) it's Nvidia only. Would be nice to have more competition but unfortunately, it's what we currently have.

                        • @DmytroP: Damn…well AMD should step up their game make a decent top end competitor to Nvidia's next top end offering….would be like the 680 and the 7970 all over again….or linus states… I think AMD made the GHz edition to try trump out the 680 until Nvidia brought out the 770 or 690…ahhh i don't know…

                          • @Zachary: Maybe I did not express myself well, for gaming AMD card seems to be very competitive (ignoring the current availability issues for both AMD and NVidia), it's for my tasks, deep learning mostly, it's NVidia only.

      • -2

Ah the customary comment about prices, have to make it in every single gpu deal huh

    • It's a very good card, excellent cooling, very quiet even under constant full load. On launch the price was the same except of 10% discount. Quite a good deal, no price jacking from Computer Alliance.

  • +6

    3*8 pins card, nice

    • +1

      Same as my 3080

    • Yeah, you can split the third though. So you don’t need 3 cables from the PSU.

  • +2

If only I could afford to build a new PC around it to do it justice…

    • +29

These are terrible price to performance cards.

  • +1

Can't even view it properly thanks to the annoying 2nd scroll bar in the ebay description.

  • +1

The only good thing is that crypto miners won't be snapping these up at such ridiculous prices…

    • is it any good at crypto compared to the 3080's hashrate?

      • it is slightly better for mining, it's good if you want to mine and keep the card, but 3080 is still really the best for return if you have a good deal on electricity

      • +1

the 3090 has about a 110-115mh/s eth hash rate vs a ~98 3080 etch hash rate, so the MH/$ is terrible, the 3060ti's and 3080 have quite a high ROI rate.

  • +2

    Thanks opp, got 3!

    • 2 SLIed and 1 eGPUed :p

  • +14

3090s have to be the worst cards on $ per performance if you game on them
They cost double that of a 6800 xt and you barley get 10-20% better performance, some games it's even based on benchmarks
Maybe there's another use for these?

    • +14

Video rendering, streaming, content creation, CAD (?). One would be a fool to buy this solely for gaming.

    • +5

Well, you don’t get DLSS with the AMD cards which makes RTX usable at high resolutions with very impressive results. Not saying it justifies double the price, but it’s a feature you get. Nvidia’s cards are well ahead with their AI/ML cores.

      • AMD have their own DLSS equivalent coming out in 3 months, used DLSS myself personally on my 2080ti and it still looks worse than native with a lot of issues and generally softer appearance, been quite disappointed with it in cyberpunk.

We've seen various upscaling/reconstruction techniques over the last few years with checkerboard and temporal upscale, it's a constantly evolving field. RDNA2 has int8/int4 inferencing support so you'll see something out soon and it will be also leveraged by next gen consoles which probably need it most.

        • by that time Nvidia will be on 3rd pass of DLSS

      • I don't care for Dlss and rtx tbh, it's nice yes but if I can have a monster card for 1k and I can with 6080 xt I'd rather get that then spend 40-50% more for same performing card (3080) but better rtx
Besides everyone knows amds card reach their peak 1 year after release

        • -1

6800XT is not a 1k card in 99% of the places here

        • When you see the fps in supported games with and without DLSS, I don't see how you could have that opinion!

          • @Deviner: I've seen the FPS and I've also seen the soft image quality and visual artefacts DLSS brings, the AI algorithm doesn't work across all cases well sometimes, which is why support is very limited and selective in games.

            • @neomoz: It's only enabled when Nvidia have supported it….
I haven't heard any cases of recently supported games that have looked terrible?
Bear in mind, there tends to be low/med/high in most games so visually, it can vary.

    • +3

      nvenc > amd

    • the better value cards are simply not in stock. If you're desperate to get any card, you may have to buy one that's poor value.

    • They cost double that of a 6800 xt and you barley get 10-20% better performance, some games it's even based on benchmarks

      Then get a 6800 XT…

      • +3

        I am 👍

Graphics card pricing is getting ridiculous

    • +11

Graphics card pricing is getting ridiculous

      • +1

I bought an RX 5700 not too long after release for $479 using ebay voucher, flashed it to XT and it's probably been the best value PC buy I've ever made. Unless pricing and supply gets better soon I can't see something like that happening again this generation.

        • It's worth about double that now too.
          High yield investment!

    • because phone prices are so fking good

    • Graphics card pricing is getting ridiculous

I'd say yes and no - there are supply issues, but pricing is actually not that bad. Perhaps one of the reasons why there are so many supply issues is actually because pricing is pretty good.

Ignore the 3090 for this discussion because the 3090 was never a value product anyway. The 3080 is overall a pretty good value product - it's hard to find, but attainable for around $1200-$1300 if you're patient. At this price point, it's significantly cheaper than the 2080 Ti was prior to the 30-series launch and it's significantly faster.

Alternatively, the 3070 also sits in a pretty good place - it pops up for around the low $900's here all the time. Again, you have to be patient. Given that it's approximately the same performance as a card that cost ~$1500 just a year ago (the 2080 Ti), I think this is not unreasonable.

Buy 10 and sell on gumtree for profit

    • +3

30 free returns if you can't sell it by then, easy money

Please don't buy this just for gaming :,)

    • wat abt mining

      • +4

Go for it… Grab 10 and go nuts! Let us know what you make… I dare say it may even be better than a BMW…. Everyone knows they are a high yield investment..

  • +8

I laughed when they said at the announcement that the 3xxx series of cards would be about half the price of the 2xxx series cards. Yeah right…

  • +6

    Yeah Nah

  • +3

if you're willing to step down to 3080, you can get a complete system from PC Byte for $2399.

    • +2

      OMG that's 10 less!!!!! 90 is 10 better than 80!!!

Loll have a + for your sensibility!!! You sir are the voice of reason!

      • +4

yes, but 10 as a percentage of 3090 is only 0.3%.

        So with a 3080 you're still getting 99.7% of 3090.

        • +3

and you get a whole PC and save nearly $300! … with 99.7% of a 3090 to boot… i vote for Lostn for president (just dont be in the white house when the trump supporters get there)….

  • Is this card come with plastic back plate ? This year MSI models are not very well reviewed

    • I think it has the metal back plate. It has a good cooler, keeps the card temperature low with very low noise level. MSI 2080ti Gaming X Trio was excellent and 3090 series looks very similar.

      • They used plastic for the 3080 and 3070, so not sure about the 3090

        • I think MSI switched to the metal backplate for 3090 to provide better cooling for VRAM chips.

    • +1

Metal backplate. Using mine right now, beast of a card

  • Who apart from pro gamer (earns money) or design professional would buy this?!

    • They're out of stock everywhere, do you really need to ask this question?

    • +1

Lots of PC users that like having the best.
People pay crazy money for small upgrades.

This card is crazy though and will be relevant for the next 4 years at least
A lot of even time poor people PC gamers would get this as it just works!

You buy the best so you don't have to worry about fine tuning.

      • Yes especially seeing that alot of 3080s are going for 1600-1800.

        • At this stage people are throwing money to get whatever cards in stock.
If we only had 3070 that's what people would get!

          • @Gumster: There's no point in such a card if your screen isnt 4k hugh refresh rate though, so many gamers waste their money here and it exasperates their addictions even more! Even high refresh rate isn't worthwhile unless you play competitive FPS AAA titles, massive overkill here. Can't even think of one game played competitively that would require an rtx 3090 @4k 🤔

            • +1

@donkeydoc: Whole heartedly agree I'm holding onto my 5700xt for at least another year but more likely 2

    • +2

Who apart from pro gamer (earns money) or design professional would buy this?!

You can ask that about anything.

One of the guys from work eats lunch at the restaurant across the corner every day. One time I went with him and he paid around $20. I pay around $5 for a microwave lunch or pack yesterday's leftover dinner. How much is $15 extra a day for around 200 working days a year? That's right, $3000, or a 3090.

Point is, buy what makes you happy. If you want a 3090, then buy it. You can't take your $$ to your grave with you.

  • Good price. Only a few left now

  • -1

    Thanks OP. Got 3
    .
    .
    .
Into my cart and then deleted them. :D

  • +1

No regrets with the 3090. I got the MSI 3090 Suprim X - and its excellent.

Don't feel bad if you can afford this - the price isnt too bad considering the market.

Watch these creep up higher again over the next 12months. Daresay the 3080ti will be this price.

  • -1

OMG just purcahsed 2000 dollars worth of ebay Gift Card and by the time i entered the gift card number the GPU is out of stock. there were still 2 cards at the time of the checkout. I feel so bad now

    • They have a few other models available

      • -2

The gigabyte is overpriced and galax for 2600 ? but I am glad that I called my bank and since they are still pending transaction my bank was able to stop the payment and dispute them for me. Hopefully I can get my 2000 back, Have called computer alliance as well but they refused to add more stock back, even though they have stocks on their store and still listed as in stock on their own website

        • Instead of contacting the vendor you purchased the gift cards from you lodged a dispute with your bank citing fraud? lol wot

          • -2

@2pro4sho: I did contact them and have sent email but it’s weekend and no one pick up the phone. I didn’t say it’s fraud I just explained to them I no longer need the gift cards because the item I want was out of stock and the bank said as long as I did not use the gift card they can help me to stop the payment. that’s a fair request as it’s a lot of money. It will be too late to contact the bank if the money go through more than likely the vendors will just say gift cards are non-refundable

            • +1

@ozvictor: I work in banking and have never heard of a bank approving a customer's request to cancel a pending transaction because they changed their mind after the goods have been delivered and still in the possession of the customer.
