    Can you break down the room sizes and costs for this unit and the others you offer?
    Also, how do i know if my place meets the installation requirements for the base cost? Do you send someone out to chevk the premises before a customer commits? Thanks

          I think he means floor area.

          eg 5m Long by 2M wide = 10m2

          so slightly over powered for a general bedroom - 3m by 3m = 9m2

            @ScottG7: For our 4m x 3.5m bedroom, I was quoted a 3.5kw unit so this might be a little small. However we had 9 foot ceilings and window was west facing so maybe those made a difference.

      I have two of this exact unit, in two bedrooms. 9m2 and 10m2. I also have a 2.5 MHI one in another 9m2 bedroom. All my rooms are around 9.5 feet high so not low ceilings either, mid height ceilings.

      These smaller units are perfectly fine for over a year of heating and cooling - zero problem. I'm living in south western Brisbane so it can get pretty hot. Able to chill the room if that's what you want.

      However be aware about factors beyond room size - I made sure to put the compressor in a cool shaded spot, if you don't do that you might have issues as well as much higher running costs. The location of the air around the compresser is very important. Also consider if it's a super hot part of the house, with full western sun, no shade, and no insulation maybe you need a larger model. One of my rooms with this small aircon is on the western side, but gets a bit of shade and the house has insulation though no whirlybird, and that room is fine with this size.

      Highly recommend for normal bedroom size if you don't want to waste money on larger units that aren't necessary.

      I saw some comment below saying it's a b.s. aircon but frankly that's ridiculous, I'm very happy with my two units of this in normal bedrooms for well over a year!

      I got my two units for $500 each in a nice deal, but I reckon this at 1k installed is pretty much the same value.

      p.s. these have a high power mode which I put on for a few minutes when I start it so the room cools down quickly, which I use if it's a really hot day. The only real difference I could see to my 50%+ more expensive (on bargain) 2.5kw MHI is that bigger one has a fancier remote. The remotes on these look a bit basic (but work fine).

      I just had a aircon replaced recently, install only
      shopped around, i think i got about 4 quotes, all of them were $850 each +GST if invoice required,

      even though mine was a replacement, since it was already 10 years old, it needed an electrician hence the price,

      given I shopped around, that must be the market price,

      but I was surprised it cost that much to install a replacement aircon
      especially since deals like this,

      would like to know why the difference across states

      • For what size AC? Different sizes have different install costs.
        I shopped around for 2.5kw and 7.1kw.
        2.5kw: $400 - $700
        7.1kw: $750 - $1050

        Prices inc GST/receipt, etc… I don't engage tradies who do the "cash only price" tax dodge.

        • I didnt know there was a price difference between the units, thought it was one price fits all, ours was 6.5kw

          every quote I got, I mentioned size but none of them seem to be too concerned,

          they were most concerned about back to back,
          I got all my leads from hipages, all with high recommendations,
          my guy even charged me an $70 for the brace because the old one was safer to be replaced

I got quotes for 2 different systems (2.5kw and 7.1kw) when I was shopping around, and they ALL quoted different prices for the 2 different size units. This was in Melbourne, October 2020, so I don't think things have changed much since I shopped around.

                For my larger units, I got the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries 7.1kw for $1599 x 2 + delivery from bunnings + $200 x 2 cashback + $750 x 2 for install = $2,149 x 2 + delivery. I had 3 installed (1 x 2.5kw in the study, 1 x 7.1kw in the living room, 1 x 7.1kw in the kitchen/dining area).
                I don't think you can replace a large unit with multiple small units…

        MHI 2.5kW, 5kW, 7.1kW. All 3 are not back to back, some runs are longer than others, one with hanging bracket, running on individual circuits.

        ~$700 for a 7.1kw system recently. Got quotes up to $1200 and a lot of uninterested parties because i wasnt buying one of their overpriced systems

    For anyone who isn't sure, this is enough to cool / heat a small bedroom or study.

    You would be severely let down putting this in a lounge/dining open area

      not really. it depends on many things like insulation (walls and ceiling), ceiling height, glazing on the windows, doors, orientation of the house, type of flooring. Think about how a fridge works or how an oven heats - wouldn't be as efficient if there leaks

      • And use a fan to redirect the cool air.

            • @Bretttick: I got mine installed for $650 recently in Melbourne including a wall mount. One of the few places that did install only and actually provided electrical and plumbing cert.

                @cheapass88: Yep, i had called over 50 places (no exaggeration), some were quoting $1200. This guy was decent and did it in a few days from when i called, one other place i found was same price but no wall mount but had to wait over a month! Most places in melb are around 3 week wait too

          Unless you're talking about a large system, you got ripped off.
          750 is enough to get a 7kw+ system installed (needs 2 guys due to how big it is).
          For a 2.1kw system (only needs 1 guy), you should be paying 400-500.

            • @Wildesy: Well, I can only tell you based on the quotes I got and the systems I had installed.
              I paid 450 inc gst for the 2.5kw installation, and 750 inc gst for each of the 2 x 7.1kw installation with proper invoice and electrician's certificate.
              Straight back-to-back, with installation brackets included (not the concrete slab).
              They had 5 guys come over to do the job (all 3 simultaneously), and then 1 guy stayed behind for 2hrs or so to leak test all 3.

          I contacted 5 places

          Got quoted $750 to $900 install for each unit
          Basic back to back install on wall bracket

          Very expensive in Melbourne

          I could not find anyone for $500

        • For this tiny unit (2.1kw) 500 from a reputable electrician company should be more than enough.

        • I am not a trader, just a consumer of aircon. Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with plumbing the wastewater from Aircon to the downpipes? The wastewater from the condenser is only a water right?

    1.7 kw should be ok for cooling a smallish bedroom so long as you don't have a computer with Intel i9-10900k. Good price but wonder how much extra for 2.5 kw.

        No you still need to run the aircon in winter with the intel turned on. That way you can keep the ambient temp of the entire room under 40c ;)

      With any fixed price vendor, you want to be sure they install it to standard: Eg.
      * Vacuum the pipes (they have to bring a portable vacuum pump),
      * Check for leaks (they need to use a gauge set to monitor the vacuum, or a mini digital vacuum gauge)
      * Pressure test with Nitrogen, (they need a canister of Nitrogen)
      * Check for leaks properly (using soapy water on internal and external joints), and
      * Vacuum again before releasing the refrigerant by opening the valves on the side of the outside unit.

      A friend of mine had some jokers turn up to replace his units, they emptied the refrigerant to the atmosphere on each one, did none of the above (all of which they are supposed to) and two of the three units failed in less than a few months due to subsequent refrigerant leaks. All cheap because of some joker trying to scam the customer, and the governments stupid DRED scheme.

      All depends on whether they are repaired to use an existing circuit and breaker.

      All they have to do is do the old 'inadequate site' trick:

      • "Sorry, you don't have a circuit that we can add this to"
      • "To meet the standard, we have to install a breaker, isolator, dedicated circuit"

      And then charge you extra to install a $10-$50 worth of bits and pieces, and profit!

      Or convince you that a 3m pipe is not long enough, or the installation is somehow otherwise more complex than the 'deal' allows, to get more

        Mechanical Plumber here…

        Most of those steps are over the top. All that is required to clean the lines and test for leaks is to vacuum the line down to 200 microns and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. If the vacuum holds you have no leaks. You’re then free to release the gas and you’re good to go.

        I’d suspect they won’t do this for this deal. You’ll get a sparky with a artic license (don’t get me started, they shouldn’t be doing plumbers work but that’s for another day) and all they will probably do is purge the lines with refrigerant (Have the pipes disconnect at the condenser, release the gas and quickly rush to connect the pipes back up. You’ll lose gas and have debris in your lines which will most likely shorten the life span dramatically.

          Mostly too true*. But not OTT at all. If you want the system to last, it's the bare minimum. But taking time is not the way that any installer can make money, so your comments are dead on otherwise.

          They will feel they can control the debris by not 'making any' and 'see/sense' any leaks that will cause it to fail early, but they will fail on that score every x in y installations, and will fail to see the problems that don't occur in the warranty period (plus others who don't come back to them for obvious and other reasons).

          I understand that LG now operate their own clean up service, employing more of these guys to go round fixing the failures under warranty (total refrigerant loss, system failure, etc.). Not sure if they ever report up the chain with any success about installers causing it though.

          (*) Testing for no leak under vacuum is only a low pressure static test, so not a good one. I wouldn't leave it without having put (non-corrosive) soap on the joints at pressure. And pressurising with Nitrogen is the best way for this during installation. However a quick double check once gassed and working in heat mode is the only real way to verify each joint is good to maximum pressure, but the Nitrogen is a sensible way to test it's good to go before the releasing the refrigerant. Of course it needs to cycle hot-cold a few times with the soap to be sure, and a faulty joint can still leak over time even if it passes this, should the flares not be done properly.

          • @resisting the urge: A vacuum will find a leak. It will not be able to vacuum down to 200 microns with one. Nitrogen is good to find a leak if you know you have one but don’t know where however for a simple installation it’s a little over the top.

            Below is a installation manual outlining a procedure. I concur soapy water on the flares is good practice.

            • @Poorunsdownhill: Indeed a leak should always show up under vacuum, but that said, I doubt many wait long enough to notice small ones!

              I like to cover scenarios where a leak occurs after a series of massive heat changes (like a few weeks of turning on and off), or the first time the system is used on heat, e.g. the first time it against the winter ((since everyone installs them in the summer usually this might be 6 or 18months after installation). It can take as long as getting to that point before the system sees high enough internal pressures to initiate a refrigerant leak, and is why wintertime is often when the refrigerant leaks begin from poorly flared joints.

              I like the link btw, a manual written in plain english, not by a team of graduate compliance lawyers and then rushed through translation. But have a look at the later ones, they mandate Nitrogen testing now to prevent R32 reacting with any remaining oxygen- but I posit it is more to stop people venting refrigerant to flush the pipes first, as doing this with R32 is dangerous.

  • Also interested in 2.5kW as my 2.5kW in my guest room just failed. Although 1.7kW may be okay too (room is pretty spot on 10m2).

    Any discounts for replacement install of full install too?
