Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard - 0% Interest on New Purchases from 15 Feb to June Statement

180

This is possibly targeted, check your emails to see if you've been selected.

Deets from the email;

We know that a little less from us could mean a lot more for you.

That's why, until the end of your June 2021 statement period, you'll pay 0% p.a. interest on new purchases made on your Bankwest Zero Platinum Mastercard, account number XXXXXXXXXXX

So what does "0% p.a. on new purchases" mean?
It means you won't be charged interest on new credit card purchases from 15 February 2021 until the end of your June 2021 statement period. Any balances on purchases which remain outstanding after the end of your June 2021 statement period will be charged at the ongoing purchase interest rate, as outlined in your credit card schedule.

It's worth noting that cash advances are not considered a purchase (e.g. ATM or checkout withdrawals) and will be charged at the standard cash advance rate, and fees such as cash advance fees will still apply. For the term of the offer, you'll still be required to pay the minimum monthly payment for your credit card by the due date (found on your credit card statement) to avoid a late payment fee. Outstanding balances on purchases made prior to 15 February 2021 are not eligible for the 0% interest rate.

What do I need to do?
Nothing, the 0% p.a. interest rate on new purchases will be automatically applied to your account on 15 February 2021 and will expire at the end of your June 2021 statement period

  • This card was great until they essentially removed the travel insurance. Now it's a fairly worthless card to lure people into paying interest.

    • When did they remove it? Isn't there still complimentary insurance? It was one of the main reasons I got the card.

      • +2

It still shows as a feature so I suspect they've downgraded the coverage.

You still get "Complimentary Overseas Travel Insurance which has cover for overseas medical and dental expenses, accidental death, personal liability and baggage and personal goods." (https://www.bankwest.com.au/content/dam/bankwest/documents/l…), but it changed at the end of 2019 to presumably cover less things.

Don't believe every rant on the internet. They did NOT remove travel insurance, they just changed the insurer which provides slightly less coverage. It's still pretty good for oseas travel for basic coverage. If you need something more, I wouldn't rely on complementary insurances anyway.

        • I said "essentially", indicating that it was not actually removed. I must admit when I originally checked when they made this change, I thought it was only very basic medical cover. This cover actually seems…adequate.

Personally I always check the pds of the complimentary cover and have used it on two occasions so far.
          1) fatality in the family so had to come back
          2) ended up in hospital with respiratory problems

          Both covered perfectly no issues.

      • Yes, there is still complimentary travel insurance. They removed the minimum spend criteria and changed the cover.

As a Bankwest Gold, Platinum or World Mastercard™ cardholder, you’re eligible for complimentary credit card insurance. We’ve reviewed the Overseas Travel Insurance offering provided through our supplier Cover-More* and we're making some changes to the eligibility criteria and to what’s included in the complimentary cover.

From 9 December 2019, you won't need to meet the minimum spend criteria to be eligible for complimentary overseas travel insurance. You'll still need to have an activated, open, eligible card when you're travelling.

You'll have cover for the basics with Complimentary Overseas Travel Insurance, with the option to upgrade for extra protection.

For Gold & Platinum Mastercard, the maximum trip length covered by Complimentary Overseas Travel Insurance changed to 31 days. With complimentary cover for:-

        • Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses^
        • Personal Liability
        • Accidental Death
        • Baggage and Personal Goods

Everything else (e.g. cancellation costs, travel delay expenses, resumption of journey, kidnap & ransom) became Upgraded Benefits:-

Before travelling, you can upgrade with Cover-More from the Bankwest website or by calling 1300 468 340. A premium applies and you will be issued with a Certificate of Insurance.

  • Can you have supplementary cardholders with this?

    • +1

      I have 2 additional.

  • Does this mean that I can make purchases on this card, and leave the money to pay it in my mortgage offset until June?

    • yes if you're eligible.

  • Two warnings about this card.

    1. if you do not provide the bank with a mobile phone number (it is optional) then all payment attempts over a certain value using "3D secure" will silently fail with a message telling you to call BankWest. When you do call BankWest they will claim there is no record of a payment attempt. Their systems seem to have been only half built and their call centre staff have no visibility of what the back end systems are (not) doing

    2. if you have another person on the same account their card will have an identical number to your card (other banks issue completely different card numbers for joint users)

      1. Interesting problem, I would always give my mobile number to any bank that I am with because otherwise contact would be slow and painful for them.

      2. What is the actual problem with this? It's the same on my Westpac card.

  • Oh wow this is very good, 0% for 4 months, for existing customers right?

    • Yep, don't think it's for newbies.

      • +1

Unfortunately i was not targetted :(

  • i got this but i wish they'd bring back the og easy instalments offer: 6 equal monthly payments with no interest or fees.

  • I received an email from Bankwest last week advising they're cancelling my card due to inactivity :)

The only time it got used was on O/S holidays. At least I don't have to worry about getting a replacement any time soon!

  • Out of topic, just realised they dropped the cost of the ring to $15, been a while i didnt look at their site but i think it was $39 or something not sure, for those who use it, any comment about the ring :)

    • +1

I quite like it. It's really easy to use, more ergonomic than a watch.

      • Good to know, read somewhere the tap can be hit n miss. Good thing i can think of is i no longer bring my card i.e to the beach or swim

  • I am way happier about this than I should be =D

FYI, they will send you a free sizing kit for the ring

  • +1

FYI my email just came through then.

  • is this targetted? i cant find the email. did chat they said it should appear on statement and they cant check to see if im eligile and to check junk folder .

    • +1

Don't know if it's targeted, but if you have it then it will appear on your statement:-

      Your promotional rates
      Special offer Purchases from 12/02/21
      Rate 0.00% p.a.
Term Until the end of your statement period in Jun 2021

Didn't think I'd get much value out of this offer, but it's proven unexpectedly useful while I'm between churning cards.

  • So when exactly do you have to pay it all back to avoid interest? The payment date in July or the payment date in August?

    • My statement says

0.00% p.a. Until the end of your statement
      period in Jun 2021

I plan to have everything paid for before the statement closing date in June.

      • Ok thanks. So to be clear, you're saying to pay everything in June? That is, if the statement received in May has a payment due date of 7 June, to pay the closing balance by 7 June?

    • +1

I interpret it as when you receive a bill in June you would have until the "Payment due" date on that bill.

If you want to err on the side of caution then pay it off sooner.

      • That's what I thought is most likely. My original confusion was in which statement is "June 2021 statement", because the statement that I'll receive in July will cover something like 10 June to 12 July 2021, so is that in fact the June 2021 statement …
