      I boosted. Then scanned my rewards card. Nothing came up in my receipt about the bag.
      The attendant wasn't aware of this and said there is no deal going on :-(

    Nothing "green" about these bags, they are made of plastic fibre and take hundreds of years to break down.

        They don't last for your lifetime, so yes, you will need to throw in the trash ultimately.

            @msonu1975: For me I recall seeing them around my place but they have never been taken back . I normally for larger buys use a trolley but for convenience will buy a 15c or 30c bag ( they seem to run out of the 15c a lot ) .

      Have you ever left one in the sun? They completely degrade within months. Not all plastic takes a long time to degrade. If it's not UV stabilised plastic will degrade in months.

        It will break down into tiny plastic fragments. The actual plastic itself won't break down. Part of this whole microplastics issue. These need to be recycled in store.

        Yeah its a common misconception unfortunately :\

        Degradable/Biodegradable vs compostable.

        "Degradable bags are made from plastic with other chemicals added (including heavy metals) that cause the plastic to break down and disintegrate over time when exposed to sunlight and heat. If degradable bags are released into our environment they become quite problematic as they break down into hundreds of tiny pieces of plastic. Animals can consume the smaller pieces of plastic more readily than they would if the bags were still whole.

        "Compostable bags are made of natural plant starch, and do not produce any toxic material. Compostable bags break down readily in a composting system through microbial activity to form compost."

        They do NOT biodegrade (i.e broken down into their constituent parts by bacteria) , they photo degrade and end up as micro plastics that are now everywhere from animals to the fetus of unborn children and we ingest 1000s of them.

        As to "recycling them in store", that doesn't happen either, they are collected in store (ie you bin them at the store) they are collected and most likely they eventually end up in land fill. Only a tiny percentage of plastics are ever recycled and even then eventually it can't be recycled anymore and ends up in landfill anyway. All plastic will eventually end up in landfill, or worse, enter into the general environment. Every time I go for a kayak (Gold Coast) I collect buckets of the stuff and that's just stuff I directly pass and can see, I don't go out of my way to collect it.

      You're right, but you can put them in the redcycle bin to be recycled, so not perfect but they don't need to go in landfill.

        Not in my collection area - will cost money to be separated & likely go to landfill!
        Check your local recycling collection rules for what can be put in recycling bin.

          Oh I mean I drop them into the Redcycle bin in the supermarket, not in my recycling at home. They take soft plastics, such as plastic bags, packaging and specifically 'green bags' it's a pretty cool scheme https://www.redcycle.net.au/what-to-redcycle/ apparently it gets turned into outdoor furniture, decking boards etc.

            Coles sometimes have a garden seat made from the bags to promote the scheme.

      shaybisc, this is certainly not the perfect solution but I went down to the $2 shop, bought a cheap luggage strap and Ozbargain-fashioned some grocery-carrying straps in this manner (https://www.google.com/search?q=GROCERY+GRIPP&tbm=isch&ved=2…). The brunt of the weight is carried on both my shoulder, and either my wrist or elbow.

    FYI, they have a policy that allows you to swap old bags that are damaged for new ones. I've done it a few times in the last year as they eventually rip or the black base breaks.

    just buy a 15c bag. 100 bags is like $15 dollars and way more convenient. You can reuse them and don’t need to bring them back with you

    I'm really done using the 15c bag as it gets ripped so easily and it's very hard to clean. Been buying these green bags anyway so it's a good offer to have.

        That’s a great idea. Will do that. I did it once with my green bag and the guy rolled his eyes at me but I insisted I wanted a new bag.
