If you could get Ryzen 7 5800x for similar price to i7 10700KF (based on a Pre built PC not standalone price point), which one would be better for productivity and gaming?

    • +6

Ryzen 7 5800X will be better: gaming performance will be similar, but productivity the Ryzen will lead by a good margin (~11-31% depending on types of task, and can even be 54% faster with AES-256 type workload, according to this quality review by Hardware Unboxed/TechSpot: https://www.techspot.com/review/2134-amd-ryzen-5800x/) and at lower power consumption.

Only sad thing about the 5800X is you can't even find it with a price tag starting with 5 (currently retails for AU$650+, often $700+)

    • -7

Definitely more value from the Ryzen.
      Ryzen 7 5800X: $699
      i7 10700KF: $421.52

      Ryzen also has better performance.

    • +11

If you can get them for $421 then buy a pallet and resell them.

  • +2

Geez, 10600k isn't just looking good vs the 5000 series, it's arguably better then the 3600 too at this price.

    • +3

It's a fair bit better than the 3600 at this price if your use case is gaming. 10600K requires an aftermarket cooler and a more expensive motherboard to be fair, so add $100 compared to a 3600/B450 bundle, but you're getting +10% performance at stock clock speeds with a higher end GPU.

The 3600 has been fantastic for budget gaming but at current prices it's not very good value compared with 10400F or 10600K.

    • The problem is you end up paying more to get a decent motherboard. So the 3600 still comes out on top in terms of price.

      • I have the 3600. Bought a dud Asus B550 board, switched to a slightly less dud MSI board.

At the time the 10600k was $200 more and out of stock everywhere.

If I had my time again, Intel kills the 3600 at this price. I'm not worried about the Board cost, I just want stability, and in my experience I've had nothing but troubles with my switch to AMD. You could also get away with slower ram on Intel so that may appeal to some.

        • +1

Whether Intel or AMD boards are better would be a subjective user experience. Both are generally designed by the same company and B450 is a proven chipset that overclocks AMD chips well. A mid-high end B450 board is great for the 3600 and only about $150, you could even snag an mATX for close to $100 that's still feature packed and has the B450 chipset. They also enable an upgrade path to Zen 3. RAM pricing is generally not an issue as you can grab 3200CL16 or 3600CL16 16GB kit for close to $100. The price difference between that and some low end 2666MHz memory is very small. A Z490 motherboard that is decent will be double the AMD board and probably close to the CPU price, so it's definitely a factor to figure when weighing up if you want a 3600 or 10600K even when the 10600K is heavily discounted like this deal.

          • @Yuri Lowell: Oh yeah I know about pricing with Ram. More just if you had 2666 you'd really need to, however, with Intel you'd get away with it fine.

            Amd you'd ideally need 3600.

The B550 Boards I've come across often have some awful bugs, I also personally don't like the AMD Ryzen software and additional setup required to optimise the system.

I actually had a 9900k desk pc and 9600k htpc which I sold purely due to them going up. The 3600 was a downgrade obviously, but the Intel systems for me just worked. Windows 10 setup, Nvidia drivers, done. Not so with AMD in my experience.

2021 the year I start upvoting budget value for money intel cpus

but is it worth a $100+ more than the 10400f ?
3.3ghz vs 2.9ghz, same core / thread count

    • OC with z490 to 5ghz all core. downsides are z490's are pricey, but better perf than any ryzen 3000 for gaming

  • I validated my processor I bought off Amazon a few weeks ago.. I had no idea about the bundle promotion.

Oddly though.. most look like subscription based software and they're offering "free trials for 6 months' ???

  • What would be a good mobo to go with these?

    • +3

MSI Z490 A pro, Asus Z490M prime or gigabyte Z490M GamingX if you don't want to spend much.

MSI Z490M gaming edge wifi for mid range

MSI Z490 unify for a higher end board that's not absurdly priced

  • +1

What did a 9900K used to cost? $780 something like that? And it's now basically half… Gee seems like progress to me, which is bizarre.

  • -4

Intel wins! Sucked in AMD, capitalist scum!

  • 10600KF is 299 at pcbyte. Only problem with this vs the 3600 is the higher nm scale.

    • +2

Yup, the KF SKUs will be better value if you don't need the iGPU at all. Although the iGPUs are proving to be worth something during the current dGPU market craziness, as a tie-over until one can obtain a dGPU.

    • Motherboard pricing might be another problem. But more performamce with games

      • Z490 motherboard set you back another $250-$300

  • +7

Looks like intel is the new Ryzen. Value for money in compared to stupid hyped prices of Ryzen 5000

    • I'm glad. It didn't take long for AMD to jack pricing the moment they had the better tech.

      Great for consumers.

I intended on switching my 'temp' 3600 to a 5000 series, but there's no way I'll bother now.

  • Is it me or are the coupons not working upon checkout even with afterpay ticked?

    • +1

It's still working for me, just tested (the eBay Plus code).

      • Ohh I need ebay plus to use this deal?

        • +1

You need eBay Plus for the 12% discount code of PLUSAY12, otherwise PAPY10 code gets you 10%. See Original Coupon Deal for details.

          • @zrmx: Thanks for the reply. It seems to say my code cant be used when I apply PAPY10 to https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/174358993633. Am i doing something wrong?

            • +1

@fourkings: I just tried the PAPY10 code and it is still working for me, even when I just entered it without activating afterpay. I has not yet logged into paypal though, maybe try and make sure your paypal isn't active?

              • +1

@zrmx: I tried checking out as a guest, that seemed to work. Must be something with my paypal or browser. Thanks mate :)

  • I'm confused, the original 10% off afterpay doesn't mention computer alliance anywhere?

  • The 10% code also drops both the i9-10900KF and i9-10900K down to $602.10 for non ebay plus users. Is either one worth jumping on at that price?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-S1200-Core-i9-10900K-3-70G…
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-S1200-Core-i9-10900KF-3-70…

    • Well considering that's near 6 Core Ryzen 5000 pricing, hell yes.

    • +1

It depends on your workload, like the i7, it's only worthwhile if you game AND need the extra cores for productivity.

Otherwise if you are only gaming, the i5-10600K/KF will be able to overclock to the i9 performance level with a decent Z490 motherboards, while saving ~$300 which can go towards the GPU cost (and that money often can move you up one tier in terms of GPU performance levels).

Of course, if the bragging rights is a priority, then probably i9 will net you the most gains ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
