  Seiko like to push Hardlex instead of sapphire. Apparently it's because it's less likly to shatter - although I've never had a watch crystal shatter, but I've scratched plenty.
  
  If you're really dedicated then you could replace the crystal with a sapphire.

    They don't really shatter that often but they're more likely to crack if dropped on a hard surface because sapphire is a very hard material (therefore more brittle than mineral glass)
